THE NEWS.

The city was full ofroueers yesterdaymorning; to the effect that nn armisticeof ninety days had been agreed upon be-tween the Confederate and United Suites;and some went SO far as to state thatwhite Hags wire flying from the hostilelines below Richmond. These stories jwere the offspringof idle fancies. Sofar from there being sn armistice between the belligerents, there wasraorc..I active war yesterday on the lines be-low here than there has been since\. vcmber. Our rams and small woodenboats started down the river, at an earlyhour, with the design, it is supposed, ofdamaging the Yankee pontoon bridgesnear Deep Bottom, their shipping, and, Iif fortune favored, their store-housesatBermuda Hundred and City Point ;

No official intelligence lias, as for aswe have been able to learn, been re-ceived from the expedition; but thewv jofficial reports which reach us, andwhich" we believe arc, in the main, cor jrect, are most unfavorable. It seemsthat all went smoothly with the expedition until the obstructions were reached Jwhich the enemy sunk in Trent's reachlast summer. H attempting to passthem, the Drewry a very small boat,carrying two -runs ?got aground ami wasopened upon by the enemy's batteries;!m LOO pound shot penetrated her maga jzinc and blew her up. I)f the rest of the jfleet, the Fredericksburg alone passed thejobstructions, and she soon put back, it j

c |

being thought unwisefor her to proceed]alone. We have not been able to learnwhether the expedition was then given jup, or whether the attempt to carry itout was subsequently .renewed. Con-stant cannonading was heard in the di-rection of Dutch gap during the mornin ' It is said we buffered no casualtiesby the blowing up of the Drewry, she,we presume, "bdngabandoned before shewas struck.

There was a report yesterday morning,which found believers, that we had re-captured Fori Harrison. We have noreason to believe that any advance was'

made during the day by our land forces,though we think it likely our mortarsshelled the fort foi a time. \

11 is astoirij Ring how difficult a matterit is to ascertain the truth of what occurs Jon our line-, eight miles from the city.f me would suppose that after four yearsof ?war our system of communicationehouidbe more perfect; that the WarOffice should be able at any time to giveinformation of what is transpiringonthe

'lines nearest the city, and tocorrect felse.reports. But litis is so far from beingthe ca.se, that we nave constantly to locktothe New York papers for news from;Dutch gap and its neighborhood.

Mr. F. P. Blair was still in the dtylastevening. He arrived here on Saturdayevening, dined with the President onSunday, and has had several interviewswith him since. What has transpiredduring these interviews is positively notknown, the" President having not evenmade any communication to his Cabinetou the subject W<* must await Mr. Blair'sreturn to theNorth, and then scan theNew York Trihvne for the facts. Mr.Blair will probably leave by the Hag oftruce boat which goes down the riverthis morning.

The Confederate Senate, on yesterday,transferred to tho secret calendar theHouse bill to provide more effectually firthe reduction and redemption of the cur-rency.

DIED.In this lity, on Monday, the Oth of January,

ELIZABETH CLARKE, infant daughter of Aaronand EuxabeOl Cl.uk-- Moise, aged one year and onein Sstn.
