Britain bans trading with Iran’s IRISL shipping line

According to an article in Times Online Britain has banned UK companies from making use of the Iranian state-owned shipping company IRISL (Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Line) on account that IRISL has transported goods for Iran’s ballistic missile and nuclear programmes.

The UK Treasury Minister made the announcement yesterday, saying that British companies may also not trade with Bank Mellat, one of Iran’s leading banks. Ms Sarah McCarthy-Fry said that “financial and credit institutions will no longer be able to enter into new transactions or business relationships with these entities, nor to continue with existing transactions or business relationships unless they are licensed by HM Treasury.” Bank Mellat trades in the UK as Persian International Bank. IRISL operates a fleet of container, bulk and general cargo vessels and has in the past been a frequent caller in South African ports when the company maintained an office in Durban. In the past five or more years however IRISL ships have become less frequent in these waters and the local office was closed. The British move follows a similar warning issued last month by the US Treasury against trading with IRISL. The US claimed the shipping line had provided logistical services to Iran’s Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces Logistics and had carried cargo for Iran’s nuclear and missile programme. According to the US Treasury IRISL falsified documents and used deceptive schemes to shroud its involvement in ‘illicit commerce’. “IRISL's actions are part of a broader pattern of deception and fabrication that Iran uses to advance its nuclear and missile programs,” the Treasury stated. High-level negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme are due to take place in Vienna next week involving Iran, western nations and Russia. source : Times Online

Toxic US ship with dubious distinction sneaks into Alang

The Union ministry of environment & forests (MoEF) has sought a detailed report from the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) and Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) about an American ship allegedly carrying hazardous toxic waste including radioactive substances, which touched Alang without intimating authorities. Platinum-II also changed her name from SS Oceanic (formerly SS Independence) without changing documents in IMO Number. It was lying idle at Dubai for nearly a year and a half before changing name. Gopal Krishna, convener of the Indian Platform on Ship breaking (IPOS), mapped in his letter to the MoEF that the dead vessel arrived at Alang under tow of Tug Barakuda-1 on October 7. "This 682-ft ocean liner is loaded with an estimated 210 tonnes of toxic polychlorinated biphenyl contaminated material and an estimated 250 tonnes of asbestos as part of its construction," Krishna wrote, demanding that it be sent back to the United States.

GPCB's local officer GV Patel said they boarded the vessel on October 8 and found approximately 200 tonnes of asbestos-containing material. As soon as Platinium-II anchored at Alang, Haryana Ship breaker (Plot No14) and the ship broker settled with the others for safe beaching the same day, without declaring the vessel to authorities. However, Tug Barakuda-1 collided with an anchored vessel, Amira-S, exposing the mala fide intensions and the illegal way in which it changed name. Indian Platform on Ship Breaking is demanding that US recall the ship the way France had recalled Le Clemenceau. The ship was convicted and penalised by USEPA in January 2009 and its entry into Indian waters violated the UN's Basel Convention on trans-boundary movement of hazardous wastes and their disposal.

Court tells Cebu shipyard to pay insurer for Superferry damage

THE SUPREME COURT has ruled that Keppel Cebu Shipyard, Inc. must pay a minimum P329.7 million for the fire that gutted the M/V Superferry 3 in 2000. In a 39-page decision penned by Associate Justice Antonio Eduardo B. Nachura, the high court gave credence to Pioneer Insurance and Surety Corp.’s claims that the shipyard was negligent when the fire broke out, and as a result, there was little to salvage from the ship. Pioneer had brought the case to the Construction Industry Arbitration Commission (CIAC) after the then William, Gothong & Aboitiz, Inc. (WG&A) subrogated its rights over the vessel. WG&A has since changed its name to Aboitiz Transport System Corp. The shipping company had a ship repair agreement with Keppel, whereby the latter would renovate and reconstruct M/V Superferry 3 using its dry docking facilities. During the process however, an employee was found to have worked at a certain portion of the ship without the necessary safety permit. Fire soon broke out, causing "evasive" damage to the ship. WG&A thereafter filed a claim with its insurer Pioneer, allowing the latter to seek damages from the shipyard. The vessel was insured for $8.472 million or some P360 million. CIAC later ordered Keppel to pay the insurer a minimum of P25 million, excluding interest. Both parties raised the issue before the Court of Appeals, where the shipyard’s legal liability was limited to P50 million. Before the high court, Keppel claimed the validity of that amount should be upheld because WG&A had acceded to it under the ship repair agreement. Nevertheless, Keppel said it should not be held culpable for the negligence. In fact, there was no "constructive total loss," it claimed. Pioneer however insisted that Keppel was liable for a bigger amount. Estimates from three disinterested shipyards showed that the repair expense was between P270 million to P360 million. "It cannot be denied that M/V Superferry 3 suffered widespread damage from the fire that occurred, a covered peril under the marine insurance policies obtained by WG&A from Pioneer. The estimates given by the three disinterested and qualified shipyards ... constituted credible and acceptable proof of the extent of the damage sustained by the vessel," the court said.

Distribution : daily 10475+ copies worldwide 15-10-2009 Page 6

The high court gave credence to the subrogation of WG&A’s rights to Pioneer. "Subrogation is the substitution of one person by another with reference to a lawful claim or right, so that he who is substituted succeeds to the rights of the other in relation to a debt or claim, including its remedies or securities," the high court said. As such, Keppel could not insist on the limited liability clause under the ship repair agreement, it said. In fact such arrangements were "unfair and inequitable under the premises. It was established during arbitration that WG&A did not voluntarily and expressly agree to these provisions," the high court added. Based on its computations, the high court deducted the salvage value from the total repair cost, bringing the liability to P329.7 million. The payment should include interest of "6% per year from the [time the arbitration case was filed until the decision becomes final], plus 12% on the said amount or any balance thereof from the finality of the decision until the same have been fully paid," the court said.

Suspected pirate ship released The Seychelles has released a suspected Somali pirate ship and its 11 crew captured at the weekend in the wake of the attempted hijacking of two French tuna trawlers, the presidency said on Monday. The ship and the 11 suspected pirates were released on Sunday as there was no proof they were involved in piracy, it said. The suspect ship and a small motorboat were intercepted on Saturday by the coastguard vessel Topaze inside the Seychelles' 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone. Local media reported late on Sunday that the released ship was heading for the high seas under surveillance by the Topaze.

Coastguard commander Lieutenant-Colonel Michael Rosette said the Topaze intercepted the ship as part of a joint operation with a spotter plane from the EU's anti-piracy task force Atalanta. He said the three people aboard were arrested, while a coastguard vessel then pursued two small motorboats. One was captured with eight people on board but the other skiff got away. The boats and their crew are suspected of the attempted hijacking in the area early on Saturday of two French tuna trawlers which was foiled when French marines on board the trawlers opened fire. Rosette said there was no proof that the men detained had taken part in Saturday's attack. "Since we didn't find any arms, any ammunition or any proof of involvement in acts of piracy, we had to free them" with their ship, he said, adding that the Seychelles had kept the skiff.

The Seychelles government drew protests in September from authorities in Somalia's breakaway Puntland region who briefly held two planes and their crew for landing illegally at a remote airstrip to repatriate 23 Somali pirates. Puntland said the pirates were swapped for three Seychellois seamen freed by pirates. The planes and their crew were held for a few days and were released on payment of a fine, Puntland police sources said, without specifying the amount. Source : SAPA

Oceanteam’s Dutch operation has filed for bankruptcy after losing a court battle which has seen its assets arrested. Oceanteam BV filed papers with the District Court of Amsterdam after its Norwegian parent company withdrew its financial backing, it announced this morning. Ruud van der Steeg, CFO of Oceanteam, says the 11 people employed at the Amsterdam-based contracting business will be found jobs elsewhere in the group. Earlier this week a Bergen court ruled against Oceanteam in a long-running battle with VOF Bouwcombinatie Egmond (BCE) over a 2006 wind-farm joint venture. Today an Oceanteam statement said: “Besides having an adverse affect on the organisation's need to focus on market challenges, the cost of arbitration has been and continues to be significant, and Oceanteam BV is no longer in the position to account for those costs, nor to account for the outcome should it turn out to the disfavour of Oceanteam BV.” Oceanteam ASA, its Norwegian parent, has previously underpinned the Dutch operation, but that support has been withdrawn amid fears it will interfere with the group’s restructuring efforts, it explains. Oceanteam said yesterday it was considering an appeal against a ruling in the Gulating High Court which allowed BCE to seize assets. Earlier this year Oceanteam axed around 150 jobs after shutting its UK operation. Again the doors were closed after financial support from Norway was withdrawn.

Danish prince capsizes in Sydney Harbour Denmark's Crown Prince Frederik took an unwanted plunge into Sydney Harbour on Wednesday when the boat he was skippering at the World Masters Games capsized. The prince, who is married to the Australian-born Princess Mary, was training on the water after his Tasar class race was called off due to bad weather when the accident happened. Most competitors came back in after the race was postponed in the rough and squally conditions but Prince Frederik stayed out to practice with his crew mate, a spokeswoman for the games told AFP. training," she said. "They both fell in the water but they managed to right the boat and continue to sail." A record 28,292 competitors from 95 countries ranging in age from 24 to 101 are taking part in the World Masters Games -- the world's biggest multi-sport event -- which run until October 18. The minimum age requirement to compete in sailing events is 35.

Piraeus port closed for another five days Despite political initiatives and meetings with port workers, the deadlock in the port of Piraeus, Hellas’ biggest port of entry for trade will remain closed until next Sunday the 18th of October. This will mark almost three weeks of action by workers who oppose the transition of container handling Piers II and III to Chinese conglomerate Cosco Pacific. The decision taken yesterday came as a shock to the trading and business community, since many expected that some form of temporary “truce” could be found, especially since Minister of Economy, Competitiveness and Shipping, Mrs. Louka Katseli had a more than 2-hour meeting with port workers’ unions, in an attempt to contain the crisis and persuade them to refrain from their new five day strike. Still, no compromise was made, despite the efforts and unions left the Ministry reportedly saying that “we are in the middle of the dialogue process”. Meanwhile, importers and exporters are already working out alternative routes, opting once more for the only private port of the country, the one in Astakos region, at the western part of the country. Already, Astakos has already in just one week handled 2,500 containers and its CEO, Mr. Koutsis said yesterday that the port is ready and well equipped to cater to the needs of potential customers in a competitive cost. Astakos was one of the biggest gainers from Piraeus’ loss last year, with earnings skyrocketing by 3,057% at 1.2 million euros, up from just 39,754 euros the year before. Besides Astakos, companies are also turning towards other ports in the region, like Alexandria in Egypt, Taranta in southern Italy or Constantinoupolis (Istanbul) in Turkey. Today, it is estimated that up to 7,000 containers are clogged into Piraeus port’s warehouses, while lines are implementing surcharges to their clients, due to this delay. The strike began on Oct. 1 to coincide with the start of Cosco's 30 year concession to develop and operate two of the port's three container berths. Dockworkers staged industrial action, including strikes and overtime bans, through 2008 to protest the privatization program, but the previous center right government held out and Parliament approved the Cosco agreement earlier this year. The strikes, combined with falling trade, squeezed container traffic to 431,000 20-foot equivalent units in 2008 from 1.4 million TEUs in the previous year. Cosco Pacific, the world's fifth largest terminal operator, edged out rivals with a winning $5 billion bid for the concession and a pledge to invest an additional $300 million to revamp facilities and boost annual capacity to 3.7 million TEUs. The new Minister has raised the issue of renegotiating with Cosco some parts of the agreement signed and ratified by the previous government of conservatives, a prospect which the Chinese conglomerate has already agreed with. In fact, Cosco’s executives are willing to discuss with workers their problems. In a separate meeting held yesterday between Mr. Michalos, president of the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Chinese Ambassador, Mr. Luo Linquan, the latter said that the agreement signed earlier this year between the Port Authority and Cosco must be implemented. Box Trade Moves toward Recovery

Drewry sees some progress if carriers manage over-capacity Recession ravaged one economy after another in 2009, fulfilling earlier dire predictions for the global container industry, said Drewry Shipping Consultants in their latest Market Review & Forecast. Containership lines had to cut back drastically this year and still were not able to match the dramatic drop in volume. Over-capacity has become the most critical issue facing ocean carriers. Managing it and keeping costs contained needs some clear management focus if container businesses are to survive the challenging market conditions that will prevail until at least 2014, the report said. But the report is not entirely pessimistic. Global traffic should recover a little in the second half of 2009, and trade flows may recover by around 2.4 percent in 2010, Drewry predicts. Drewry forecasts average all-in East-West rates will climb approximately 18 percent. Costs have been held down, and wages, no longer driven by shortages of skilled mariners, are no longer rising, Drewry said. Source: The Journal of Commerce

Number of laid up containerships rise 10.4pc by October 12

The number of laid up containerships increased 10.4 per cent in a fortnight, according to the latest Alphaliner survey, which showed 568 ships were idle, aggregating 1.35 million TEU as of October 12 from the 548 idle vessels, totalling 1.29 million TEU, noted two weeks earlier. The Paris-based agency said laid up fleet is now the biggest ever. Apart from ships in the 1,000-TEU - 2,000 TEU range (7,500-TEU plus sized ships lay-up rate remained steady), all sizes showed increases in idling during the two-week period. Alphaliner also reported that the raft of service cutbacks by major carriers had an impact. Yet idle ships from non-operating owners and active carriers alike continued to rise as the peak season faded and ships ended rotations as seasonal demand dried up. Source: SchedNet

USS Nimitz Celebrates Its 100,000th Catapult Shot

The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) reached a milestone in history when an EA-6B Prowler, assigned to Tactical Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 135, became the 100,000th aircraft to launch off Catapult Number 1 Oct. 7. The successful launch was flown by Cmdr. Vincent Johnson, the executive officer of VAQ-135. "It's obviously a really cool achievement," said Johnson. "It's a little piece of history that I can always take with me." A ceremony was held Oct. 9 to celebrate this achievement. "It has been 34 years with 22 sets of work ups, and it's all possible because of the people that work on this to make it happen," said Nimitz Commanding Officer Capt. Paul Monger, during the

ceremony. "The fact is this has been kept up for years, and it's tremendous. It's impressive to watch these guys work every day." Nimitz Air Boss Cmdr. Eric Wright kick started the celebration with admiration for Air Department's V-2 Division that helped to make the launch successful. "We have about 30 people on that catapult for 10-12 hours a day and around 25 people on nights to make this happen," said Wright. "When you add it all up, it is years of peoples' lives invested, and it's invested for a worthy cause." Also helping to make the mission possible was the team of people from Air Department's V-4 Division consisting of maintainers, catapult and panel operators and crew members on the flight deck. "I was the deck edge operator, and I was the one who controlled the catapult for the launch," said Aviation Boatswains Mate Equipment (AW/SW) 2nd Class Alanso ChaconGalindo. "I have been here since 2005, and this is the only catapult out of four that's reached 100,000 launches." "All of my guys are important out here to make all of this happen," said Chief Aviation Boatswains Mate Equipment (AW) Soji Thomas. "This could not happen without team work." By accomplishing this milestone, the crew members of Nimitz showed once again why Nimitz's motto is 'Teamwork… a tradition.' Nimitz is the first Nimitz-class, nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and was commissioned in 1975. The ship is named after World War II Fleet Adm. Chester Nimitz. Nimitz Carrier Strike Group (CSG), commanded by Rear Adm. John W. Miller, is comprised of Nimitz, embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 11, embarked Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 23, and the Ticonderoga-class cruiser USS Chosin (CG 65). Ships assigned to DESRON 23 include the destroyers USS Pinckney (DDG 91), USS Sampson (DDG 102) and the frigate USS Rentz (FFG 46).

Dutch Ocean Patrol Vessels To Receive Thales-Built Satellite Communication Systems

Photo : Thales Nederland Thales has been awarded a contract by the Dutch Ministry of Defence to supply naval satcom terminals on the four Ocean Patrol Vessels (OPV), that are being built for the Royal Navy. The first terminal will be installed on the first ship scheduled to be handed over to the Royal Navy at the end of 2010. The delivery period will last until 2012. This very comprehensive contract will guarantee the effectiveness of the Ocean Patrol Vessels, enabling them to communicate over secure, high bandwidth satellite links, both with

other national and allied force elements. This solution is already in service in several NATO countries, including France, Belgium and Norway. Thales will deliver a complete and innovative satcom solution for the Ocean Patrol Vessels (OPV) including a state-of-the-art dual band stabilised antenna, with civilian satcom Ku-band and military X-band. This solution is engineered to give the best trade-off between performances and installation constraints on-board the OPV. It is based on the sea-proven SURFSAT* naval satcom family with leading-edge multi-band and stabilisation capabilities, using multiple transmission systems, and ensuring seamless on-board integration. Thales is the Prime Designer and Integrator of the Integrated Mast on which the naval satcom terminal will be placed. The possibility to accommodate on the same structure and assure the compatibility of the numerous sensors for communications including satellite, surveillance, fire control and navigation is a sound and unprecedented answer to reduce the time and cost to build naval warships. Other advantages are significant savings in top-deck and below-deck space and better operational performance. “This contract confirms Thales as a leading provider of naval satcom solutions and will strengthen Thales’s partnership with the Royal Netherlands Navy”, said Geert Van der Molen, Director Land & Joint Systems of Thales Nederland. *SURFSAT is Thales's family of naval satcom terminals. It has been originally developed for the French Naval-2000 programme. SURFSAT-L, for medium and large vessels, is available in several sizes (from 1m90 to 2m60), and several operating frequency configurations, single or dual, military X band, commercial C or Ku bands. Other configurations are being developed including versions with lower diameter antennas (SURFSAT-S), or for other frequency band such as Ka and EHF. All the versions of SURFSAT terminals share the same innovative pedestal technology. They can however slightly differ regarding antenna technology; namely, according to the operational and performance requirement, SURFSAT can rely either on aluminium or composite reflector, and be fitted with single band feed or multiband feed. Furthermore, other system functions such as dual satellite tracking, primary link, ESM, etc… are available whatever the version of SURFSAT delivered. Source : defpro.com

Unemployment looms over Finnish shipyards

As they put the finishing touches on the Oasis of the Seas, some Finnish shipyard workers are too concerned about their futures to savour completing the largest cruise ship ever built. Many of the 5,000 employees and subcontractors at the STX shipyard in the southwestern city of Turku are worried about what will happen to their jobs after the Oasis and her sister ship are delivered amidst a sharp downturn in the industry. "The mood at the shipyard is pretty low. Some people are more worried than others," said workers' union representative Jari Aalto. "We will try to hang on to our staff, but it is certain that some will disappear," leaving for other jobs or retiring as lay-offs loom, he said. Shipyards in Finland and elsewhere are suffering from the global economic turmoil, which has prompted cruiselines and shipping companies to postpone decisions on new ship orders. "Since autumn 2008, for over a year now, nobody has ordered new cruise ships," Teppo Raitis, director of the STX shipyard in Turku, told AFP. About 300 of his workers are currently laid off temporarily and that number is expected to rise in coming months. "By the end of the year, the number of temporarily laid off (employees) will increase to around 900," Raitis predicted. STX Finland, part of South Korean shipbuilder STX, has one shipyard in the capital Helsinki and two in the Southwestern cities of Turku and Rauma. The three shipyards employ some 3,800 people. But the dry spell in shipbuilding also impacts STX's subcontractors and thousands of workers in metals and engineering companies. It could force up to 3,000 workers into temporary unemployment by the end of this year, according to Kimmo Puolitaival of Southwest Finland's employment and economic centre. The Turku shipyard specialises in large cruise ships, and the future of most employees there looks bleak, as they finish up Oasis of the Seas ahead of her delivery to the Royal Caribbean cruiseline in late October.

When her sister ship, Allure of the Seas, is delivered next autumn, most of STX's 2,300 employees in Turku will be temporarily laid off, the shipyard's director said. The situation is slightly better some 90 kilometers (58 miles) away at the Rauma shipyard, as its 1,000 staff workers are working on two ferries to be delivered in 2010 and 2011. In Helsinki, around half of the STX shipyard's 500 employees are at work. The maritime industry and authorities in southwestern Finland have asked the government to help shipyards by aiding innovation and changing the tax lease system, which gives financial incentives on new ship orders. Yet the Nordic country's government, which is dealing with the eurozone's worst recession, has promised no money for the shipyards. Economists have predicted that cruise companies will start ordering new vessels again once the economy stabilises, as consumers will start spending again on holidays and cruises. "All of the big cruise vessels have been delivered to the United States and the key issue is how the US economy will develop," said Birgitta Berg-Andersson, a researcher at Finnish economic research institute ETLA. She added it was difficult to predict when cruise companies would make new orders, but STX's Raitis remained confident they would be coming soon. "I predict that next spring or possibly during this year, there will be new orders," he noted. Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas are the largest cruise ships ever built and cost around 900 million euros (1.3 billion dollars) each to be made. The Oasis can accommodate up to 5,400 passengers, who will have luxurious attractions such as pool surfing, rock-climbing walls and a park with real trees at their disposition on board. The vessel is scheduled to make its maiden voyage from the US-port city of Fort Lauderdale to Haiti on December 1. Source : google

Shipbuilding report says bulk carrier fleet will grow

A new report, released by Lloyd’s Register - Fairplay Research, predicts that the world’s dry bulk carrier fleet will continue to show strong growth over the next five years, spurred largely by surging demand for iron ore and metallurgical coal to feed China’s undiminished appetite for steel production. The monthly Shipbuilding Market Forecast for September examines the dry bulk and general cargo ship sectors. It provides a review of the global business environment demand for seagoing transport, market conditions and capacity utilization for these classes of vessels, and gives a detailed five-year shipbuilding forecast, including new orders, deliveries and demolitions. The report estimates that the dry bulker fleet, currently standing at 7,839 ships with a total capacity of 432 million deadweight tons (dwt), will grow by an average of 9.5 percent through the end of 2013, up from 6.5 percent annual average growth the previous five years. The fastest growing segment will be very large ships over 200,000 dwt, increasing at 16.8 percent per annum. Deliveries of new bulkers through year-end 2013 will amount to some 318 million dwt, up 150 percent from the last five years. This will be offset by an increase in scrapping, with 76 million dwt of capacity to be removed from the fleet. Shipyard orderbooks for new bulkers will diminish as the large number of ships ordered during the boom years of 2007 and 2008 are delivered to the fleet. The contract forecast for 2009-2013 stands at 139 million dwt, considerably lower than the last five years, but a respectable size nonetheless, due to expected orders for new tonnage to be placed by Chinese and Japanese interests.

The continuing surge in Chinese imports of iron ore and coal will be the primary growth engine for the world’s bulker fleet, offsetting the falloff in grain and agricultural product exports and generally low freights for bulk commodities, according to the research report. “Steel production provides business for nearly half the world’s bulk carriers, and China now produces nearly 50 percent of the world’s steel,” observed Niklas Bengtsson, one of the report’s authors. “China’s imports of energy and non-energy commodities to supply its industry with materials for production of domestic goods and investments in infrastructure have triggered a surge in demand for large-tonnage bulkers.” The growth curve for general cargo ships will be much flatter, according to the report. In August 2009, the general cargo fleet consisted of 17,137 ships with a total capacity of 81 million dwt. It is predicted to grow by just 2.5 percent annually through 2013. There are still a large number of newbuilds to be delivered – a hangover from the ordering binge of 2007 and 2008 – but scrapping will remove 12.7 million dwt from fleet capacity through 2013, and new orders will plummet by 63 percent as demand softens. The report also notes that the market for specialized refrigerated cargo vessels will continue to decline, with only a handful of ships on order. Given China’s dominance in the steel industry, it is no surprise that China holds the top position in shipbuilding for the dry bulk and general cargo sector. China’s share of the orderbook through 2013 is a whopping 50 percent, while Japan and South Korea come in a distant second and third place. The report notes that bulker and general cargo ship deliveries from European yards have more or less disappeared over the last 30 years, and concludes “there is absolutely nothing that points to a reversal of this trend.”

Total to Ship First Yemen LNG Cargo to South Korea

Total SA will ship the first cargo of liquefied natural gas from its Yemen LNG venture in a “matter of weeks,” and the second production line will start in 2010, an official said. The first cargo from the 6.7 million metric ton-a-year LNG venture in Middle Eastern nation will be sent to South Korea under a multiyear contract with Korea Gas Corp., Francois Ravel, the company’s vice president of LNG marketing, said today in Beijing. The second of two units will start in the middle of next year. “It usually takes a couple of months for a unit to reach full capacity,” Ravel said, commenting on when the first train will maximize output. He declined to comment on reports that Total and GDF Suez, which had targeted the U.S. for about two- thirds of the terminal’s output, are diverting supplies to higher-priced markets in Asia. Yemen LNG, the country’s biggest industrial project, was originally scheduled to start in December 2008 and supply most of its output to the U.S. The global recession has forced producers to accelerate maintenance plans and shut down output as Japan, South Korea and the U.S. reduce purchases. There’s quite a lot of surplus this year, next year will be worse and it may peak in 2011, said Frank Harris, global head of LNG at Wood Mackenzie Consultants Ltd., in August. Producers are diverting cargoes away from the U.S. as prices of benchmark U.S. gas at Henry Hub have fallen by 31 percent in the past year. Total owns 39.6 percent of Yemen LNG and state-run Yemen Gas Co. owns 16.7 percent. Dallas-based Hunt Oil Co. holds 17.2 percent, South Korea’s SK Corp. has 9.5 percent, Korea Gas Corp. has 6 percent, Hyundai Corp. owns 5.8 percent and Yemen’s General Authority for Social Security and Pensions holds 5 percent, according to data posted on Yemen LNG’s Web site. “Cargo Liners”

Bij Seaforth Publishing verscheen onlangs een prachtig boek onder de titel “Cargo Liners. An Illustrated History”.
