Prior to 1956, the first sessionsof theSoutheasternJuris-dictionalConferencewereheldin

variouschurchesandauditoriumsthroughoutthesoutheastuntiltheconferencefoundapermanenthomeatLakeJunaluska.Sincethen,LakeJunaluskahasbeenblessedeachquadrenniumbythepres-enceof thousandsof delegatesandchurchleadersfromacrosstheSoutheast. “Wedon’tknowforsure,butwespeculatetherehavebeenmoreUnitedMethodistbishopsconse-cratedinStuartAuditoriumthananyotheroneplaceinthenation,”saidKenHowle,directorof advance-mentatLakeJunaluska.

Between1956and2012,56bishopshavebeenelectedandconsecratedtotheepiscopacyduringthequadren-nialmeetingsof theSoutheasternJurisdictionalConference.SeverallandmarkepiscopalelectionshavetakenplaceatLakeJunaluskaoverthepast56years,includingtheelec-tion of the first African-American bishop,BishopLinuentScottAllen,whowasassignedtotheHolstonConferencein1968.AnotherhistoricelectionwithintheSoutheasternJurisdictionalConfer-encecamein1996,whenBishopCharleneKammererbecamethejurisdiction’s first female bishop. Sincethen,therehavebeentwootherwomenelectedtotheepisco-pacy:BishopHopeMorganWardandBishopMaryVirginiaTaylor.ThroughouteachSoutheasternJurisdictionalConferenceatLakeJunaluska,God’sbeautyandcreationsurrounds, uplifts and unifies del-egates.LakeJunaluskawillcontinuetoprovideholyspacewheredel-egatesfromtheSoutheasternJuris-diction affirm the ministry of the jurisdictionandconsecratefuturegenerationsof leaders.

The DCA asked delegates and attendees to share a touching story or fun moment they experienced in Stuart Auditorium, which has seen dozens of elders elected and consecrated as Episcopal leaders since 1956.

David Anderson, South Carolina Annual Conference: “MynumberonemomentwasnotataJurisdictionalConferenceatallbutacommunionserviceattheLaityConvocation here. It was the first time I took commis-sionwiththewholegrapeinsteadof thejuice.Ipluckeditoff thegroup,anditwaslikepullingthegrapefromthelifesource,fromGod,andthenputtingitinyourmouth.”

Thegroupcom-mittedthemselvestoongoingcrossannualcon-ferencecollaborationandseekingpositivehopefulresponsestothechallengeof makingdisciplesof JesusChristforthetrans-formationof theworld.
