Deep Finesse: another statistical anomaly

By Barry RigalNobody is vulnerable. The auction starts:

West North East South 1♣ Pass 2♥ (strong)

No one has psyched. North-South have no singletons, and no six-card suits. Each, in fact, has a 5-4-2-2 shape.)

And yet, par is a North-South contract on the deal. What is it?

The answer is Board 14 from the second final session of the Silodor Open Pairs:

♠ Q 4 ♥ Q 2 ♦ K Q 8 5 2 ♣ K J 7 6 ♠ A 8 2 ♠ J 10 9 5 ♥ K J 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 ♥ — ♦ J ♦ A 4 ♣ — ♣ A Q 8 5 4 3 2 ♠ K 7 6 3 ♥ A 3 ♦ 10 9 7 6 3 ♣ 10 9

4NT doubled by North-South makes eight tricks against any defense. That’s minus 300 compared to 4♥ by East-West, minus 420.

A memorable dealThis deal comes from the second round of the

Vanderbilt in which Johan Sylvan and Frederic Wrang of Hemant Lall’s team faced Tor Helness and Geir Helgemo of Pierre Zimmermann’s squad. ♠ Q 9 ♥ Q 10 5 ♦ Q 6 4 2 ♣ A K J 5 ♠ K J 8 6 4 2 ♠ A 10 7 5 3 ♥ J 4 3 2 ♥ 9 7 6 ♦ K 7 ♦ A ♣ 4 ♣ Q 10 6 2 ♠ — ♥ A K 8 ♦ J 10 9 8 5 3 ♣ 9 8 7 3 West North East South Sylvan Helness Wrang Helgemo 1♣ 1♠ 2♦ 4♠ 5♦ All Pass

West lead the ♠K, ruffed. Declarer Helgemo crossed to the ♥Q, ruffed dummy’s remaining spade, and cashed the ♥A K. When both defenders followed, declarer crossed to dummy’s ♣ A and played dummy’s ♦Q to East’s ace.

At this point, East is down to all black cards, so he decided to exit with a spade. Helgemo ruffed in dummy and carefully cashed a second club before playing another trump. West was endplayed whether he ruffed the ♣K or not.

This pretty line has only one possible defect. If East had started with four hearts (giving West a 5=4=2=2 pattern), East could defeat the contract by playing the last heart when in with the trump ace: West can ruff with the ♦K and exit a club.

More Do’s and Don’ts to help your game – Part 10

By Brent ManleyTake more tricks as declarer with these tips.DOLearn about safety plays. Consider this

situation: You are in 6♥ with no losers outside the trump suit, which is configured like this: ♥9 5 4

♥A Q 10 8 7 2At matchpoints, you might consider playing

a heart to the queen, hoping the king is onside doubleton. The extra trick could be worth a lot to your score. If you are playing in a team game, your goal is to make your contract – period.

Say you play a heart to the queen and it loses to the king. Back in dummy, you play another heart and RHO follows low. Do you go up with the ace, hoping LHO started with ♥K J doubleton? Or do you finesse the 10?

To avoid having to make such a guess, play a heart to the ace first. If the jack comes down, simply drive out the king – you have good spots – and claim. If it’s your lucky day and LHO plays the king, return to dummy and finesse against RHO’s now-doubleton ♥J. If both opponents follow low, return to dummy and play a second heart. If RHO started with a low singleton, you never had a chance for 12 tricks. If RHO started with ♥K J x, he will get only the trump king. You can also handle a 4-0 split if LHO has the void. This will be revealed, of course, when you play the ♥A. Simply lead towards your hand twice to hold your losers to one.

There are other layouts that lend themselves to careful play. Here’s one: ♠K Q 10 9 2

♠A 6 4 3If you cash the ace and LHO discards, you

Opening lead: ♥9.Bidding commentary: North, with 16

support points (not counting the ♥Q), should venture game opposite a 1♠ overcall.

Defensive commentary: East must decide what partner’s is leading from to determine what declarer has in the suit. The lead is a likely top of a doubleton. With 9-x-x-(x) in an unsupported suit, partner leads low. If partner has a doubleton, declarer has the A-J-10-x. If you cover, declarer will eventually be able to discard two clubs from dummy on the ♥J and ♥10. If partner has the

♣K, your cover costs a club trick – the setting trick! When partner’s lead shows no honor cards, dummy has a singleton honor and you have a higher honor than dummy, cover only if you can promote a second- or third-round trick for yourself. For example, cover holding the K-J or the K-10-x. If you can’t promote at least a third-round trick, play low.

Play commentary: If South does hold four hearts to the A-J-10, he will be very pleased to see East cover dummy’s ♥Q. Declarer will win, draw trumps and cash his two heart winners, pitching clubs from dummy.

Defensive commentary #2: If East plays low on the ♥Q and declarer pulls trumps before leading a low diamond from hand, East will be relying on West to play a card indicating how many diamonds he has. Say West plays the ♦4. Looking at the ♦3 and ♦2 in dummy, East will know West has an odd number of diamonds, certainly three. That will mean South started with two, so both of East’s high diamonds will cash. East can then play the ♣A and hope for an encouraging signal from West. On this deal, the defenders will take the four tricks in the minors they are due.

’ ”

will lose a trick to the jack. Play to dummy’s king first and you can pick up four to the jack in either opponent’s hand. Try this one: ♦K Q 9 8 3

♦A 5 4 2If RHO has four to the J-10, you will always lose

a trick in the suit. Guard against J-10-x-x with LHO by playing the ace first. If RHO shows out, the ♦9 8 are the cards that will allow you to bring in the suit with no losers. If LHO plays the 10 when you lead low from hand, win the king, return to hand and play another diamond. Dummy has the Q-9 over LHO’s J-7.

DON’TTake finesses that can’t win. Say this is your

trump suit:

♥A Q 7 6 5

♥J 10 9 8LHO, a passed hand, leads the top three

clubs against your 4♥ contract. You ruff the third round and must address trumps. In a vacuum, you would run the ♥J, hoping LHO has the king. LHO, however, has shown up with 9 high-card points in clubs (A-K-Q). If he held the ♥K, he would have opened the bidding. You must play a heart to the ace, hoping RHO has a singleton king.

There are many similar situations. Sometimes you will locate a missing queen because one of your opponents has shown up with 13 HCP and a balanced hand but did not open 1NT. Work on your concentration to heighten your awareness of what’s happening at the table.

Allison Ryan and Yan Drabek of Northampton MA have placed in almost every 299er game they’ve played in Kansas City, taking first in C four times in a row on Thursday and Friday and first overall on Thursday morning. They began playing at the 2014 Fall NABC in Providence, starting with BridgePlus+ after taking Audrey Grant’s class there. They won that day. “It was our first time playing in a real duplicate game,” Drabek said. “We said, ‘This is not so hard.’”

The Result: 3NT by East, making five, E–W plus 460. The opening lead was the ♦Q.

The Facts: The director was called before the opening lead was made. The table director indicated that no Alert was due as 2♦ was a cuebid. Further review was requested, and the DiC of the tournament was asked about the Alertability of 2♦. He indicated that in our Alert procedure 2♦ is Alertable – the 2♦ bid was not chosen because it was the opponents’ suit, but because it was a transfer to hearts. The table director then gave the North hand to several players. They considered different calls over 2♦, but all of them asked what 2♦ was before answering.

The Ruling: Staff determined that although there was misinformation from the failure to Alert, it did not cause the damage. Alert procedures state that an opponent who actually knows or suspects what is happening, even though not properly

informed, may not be entitled to redress if he or she chooses to proceed without clarifying the situation. All of this player’s peers asked about 2♦; staff decided this player needed to ask as well. Law 40B4 says that a side that is damaged as a consequence of failure to explain a call or play is entitled to an adjusted score; staff concluded that the source of the damage was a player of this level not asking a question when he needed the answer to make his decision.

The Review: N–S requested a review of the ruling. North was the only player who spoke to the reviewer. He felt he had been misinformed, and that with the proper information he would have bid a lead-directing 2♠ rather than 2♥, planning to raise diamonds later.

The reviewer spoke to six national-champion level players. He gave the North hand as a bidding problem. All six asked what 2♦ was; two were vehement that it was critical, as it could be nearly anything. They suggested Pass, 2♠ and 3♦ were among the calls they would consider.

When the reviewer asked how much sympathy they would have for a player who did not ask about 2♦, two said that they could sympathize, although at the table they themselves would always ask. One of those two indicated that it never would have occurred to him that 2♦ was hearts. The other four had no sympathy at all; one suggested that over natural or artificial 1♣, so many pairs play transfer structures in competitive auctions that it would never occur to him to proceed without clarifying the situation.

The Decision: The reviewer concluded that the above-cited provision in the Alert procedure did indeed cover this situation – even if this player did not suspect that this auction was anything special, all his peers did. He was expected to protect himself. Law 21A says no redress is due a player who acts on the basis of his own misunderstanding; there was no legal basis to apply Law 40B4 (see above). The table result was allowed to stand. As the initial ruling was delivered on an incorrect application of the Alert rules, this review was deemed to have merit.

Jerry Helms, Bob Hamman and two others.

Schwartz played with partner Daniel Korbel, and teammates David Gold, David Bakhshi, Boye Brogeland and Epsen Lindqvist.

This is the fourth Vanderbilt win for captain Nickell and Weinstein, the fifth for Katz, the sixth for Levin, and the seventh for Meckstroth and Rodwell.

For the runners-up, it was Schwartz’s sixth appearance in the final (he’s won three times), but the first for each of his teammates.

Nickell’s run in the 2017 contest was marked by many decisive victories. In the 24 quarters of play over six rounds, they were outscored in four only.

Double stepping stoneChris Willenken pointed out a neat ending on

this deal played by his partner Jan Jansma from the round of 16 in the Vanderbilt. Their opponents were Roger Lee and Michael Rosenberg. ♠ A J 3 ♥ 7 5 ♦ J 9 7 5 4 ♣ K 8 4 ♠ 5 ♠ 8 7 6 2 ♥ 10 9 2 ♥ K J 6 3 ♦ A K Q 6 2 ♦ 10 ♣ 9 6 3 2 ♣ A J 10 5 ♠ K Q 10 9 6 ♥ A Q 8 4 ♦ 8 3 ♣ Q 7 West North East South Lee Willenken Rosenberg Jansma 1♦ Pass 1♥ 1♠ Dbl 2♦ Pass 2NT Pass 3♠ Pass 4♠ All Pass

West led the ♦A and switched to a trump, won in dummy. Declarer took the heart finesse, cashed the ♥A and ruffed a heart in dummy. When he exited with a low club, East rose with the ace to play another trump. Declarer drew all the remaining trumps and cashed the ♣Q to reach this ending: ♠ — ♥ — ♦ J 9 ♣ K ♠ — ♠— ♥ — ♥ K ♦ K Q ♦ — ♣ 9 ♣ J 10 ♠ 9 ♥ 8 ♦ 8 ♣ —

Jansma then played the last trump. No matter how the opponents discarded in this ending, they could not avoid being endplayed, allowing declarer access to the good ♣K in dummy. If West sheds a diamond, a diamond exit will force him to lead a club to dummy at trick 13. If West discards his remaining club, a diamond is pitched from dummy, and East is on the hook. A heart discard makes declarer’s 8 good, while a club discard allows declarer to exit with the heart, forcing East to play a club to dummy for the game-going trick. Both opponents act as stepping stones for declarer to reach dummy at trick 13.

Don’t give upAhmed Hussein shared this deal, played by

Egypt’s Tarek Sadek, from an early round of the Vanderbilt. ♠ A 9 8 3 ♥ 5 ♦ Q 9 8 4 ♣ K Q 7 2 ♠ K 10 ♠ Q 6 ♥ 10 9 8 7 3 2 ♥ J 4 ♦ A 10 2 ♦ K 7 6 5 ♣ J 8 ♣ A 9 6 5 4 ♠ J 7 5 4 2 ♥ A K Q 6 ♦ J 3 ♣ 10 3 West North East South 1♠ Pass 3NT (1) Pass 4♠ All Pass

(1) Four-card support, 9-12 HCP, unspecified singleton.

Agianst 4♠, West led the ♥10 to Sadek’s king. The contract appears hopeless: Declarer is booked to lose (at least) one trump, two diamonds and a club. Sadek persevered, playing a trump to the ace and a low trump to West’s king. On the heart continuation, Sadek won the ace (pitching a diamond from the dummy) and tried a club to the king and East’s ace. The club exit went to the 10, jack and queen, and declarer returned to his hand with a club ruff. After playing another trump to dummy’s 9, Sadek ruffed the last club in hand.

“So what?” you may ask. “There are still two diamond losers.” Well, consider the position from West’s point of view. Here’s the ending: ♠ 8 ♥ — ♦ Q 9 8 ♣ — ♠ — ♠ — ♥ 9 7 ♥ — ♦ A 10 2 ♦ K 7 6 5 ♣ — ♣ — ♠ — ♥ Q 6 ♦ J 3 ♣ —

Yes, West has five cards left in this position while the other hands have four. If you were West, what would you have discarded on the previous round? Double-dummy, a heart is fatal, so a diamond is the clear choice. But imagine if declarer’s remaining cards were the ♥Q and the ♦K x x. If West switched to a diamond, declarer could play a low diamond to the queen and another diamond to the closed hand, ducking.

The expert West player, noticing that declarer didn’t try to ruff any potential heart losers in dummy, eventually decided to let go of a heart. Sadek then cashed the ♥Q and ♥6, pitching diamonds, to make his contract.

Appealing a ruling Players in NABC+ events who want to appeal

a director’s ruling initiate the process by speaking with the director who delivered the original ruling. The table director will fill out paperwork regarding the appeal, and the appellants will explain what they believe to be wrong with the initial ruling. From there, the case may be handled by a variety of means. When the appeals reviewer receives the case, the circumstances of that particular case will determine whether the case can be resolved by the original staff (in the case of misapplication of Law or regulation, for instance), a panel of directors, or even a committee-type hearing which could include bridge experts.
