Bid Box Alerts and Announcements

When using bid boxes, the ACBL requires that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the same time.

When making an Announcement, use the Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap the Alert strip at the same time.

A player who Alerts or Announces a bid must make sure his opponents are aware that an Alert or Announcement has been made.

♠♥♦♣

Each player is required to have a convention card filled out legibly and on the table throughout a session. Both cards of a partnership must be identical and include the first and last names of each member of the partnership.

If a director determines that neither player has a substantially completed card, the partnership may play only the Standard American Yellow Card and may use only standard carding. This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and approved by the director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint

penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has at least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penalties is the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL regulations.

I hate finesses!By Leslie Shafer

As declarer, you should always pause before playing to trick one to make a plan. Depending on the contract, the questions you ask yourself are slightly different.

In notrump contracts: 1) Count your sure winners, ones you can take without losing the lead; 2) compare that total to how many tricks you need. “I see seven tricks, but I need two more to make 3NT.”

In suit contracts: 1) Count your losers; 2) Compare that total with the number of losers you can tolerate. “I see five losers, but can only have three losers since I’m in a 4♥ contract.”

One of the most popular ways of getting more winners (in notrump) or eliminating losers (in a suit contract) is by finessing. Basically, you lead toward the card you wish was a winner. Most of my students are so darned proud of actually seeing a possible finesse, that they feel obliged to try it. An expert’s view of a finesse is different: “Oh no, a finesse. I hate finesses! Let me keep looking for another way to get extra tricks. If there’s no other way, I might have to take the darned finesse.”

Here’s a deal with a very tasty-looking finesse. ♠ Q J 5 3 ♥ A Q J 4 ♦ 6 5 ♣ A K J ♠ 8 7 6 2 ♠ A 9 ♥ 10 9 8 7 6 ♥ 3 2 ♦ K 9 2 ♦ 8 7 4 3 ♣ 6 ♣ 8 7 4 3 2 ♠ K 10 4 ♥ K 5 ♦ A Q J 10 ♣ Q 10 9 5

Contract: 6NTOpening Lead: ♥10.Step 1: Count your sure winners.

There are nine: four hearts, one diamond and four clubs.

Step 2: How many more do you need? Three.

Step 3: Where can you find those extra three tricks?

When I gave this deal to my Monday class, some of the declarers were so mesmerized by their ♦A Q J 10 that they felt compelled to finesse! When the finesse failed they had only 11 tricks and went down. The proper suit to develop was spades. Simply force out the ♠A and there is a net gain of three tricks for 12 total.

A strange thing happened at two tables: declarer properly played the spade suit after winning the opening heart trick but when East switched to a diamond after winning the ♠A, declarer finessed and went down! The lure of that diamond finesse was still there even after they had developed 12 tricks!

On the next deal, it’s more difficult to find the alternative to the obvious finesse: ♠ J 10 5 ♥ K 9 8 ♦ K 7 ♣ 6 5 4 3 2 ♠ Q 7 3 2 ♠ 9 8 6 ♥ 6 ♥ 5 4 ♦ J 10 9 8 3 ♦ Q 6 5 2 ♣ K 9 8 ♣ A Q J 10 ♠ A K 4 ♥ A Q J 10 7 3 2 ♦ A 4 ♣ 7

Contract: 6♥.Opening Lead: ♦J.Step 1: Count your losers. Two: one spade

and one club.Step 2: How many losers can you tolerate?

One.

Step 3: How can you eliminate one loser? One way to get rid of a loser is to take the

spade finesse, a 50% chance. The expert would also see the ugly club suit as a way to develop an extra winner to toss the spade loser on. Even if you have ugly children, you still love them. If the seven missing clubs divide 4-3 (a 62% chance) it can be done provided there are enough entries to dummy. South must be careful to win the diamond lead in hand, preserving dummy’s ♦K as a later entry, and immediately lose a club trick. Even if the defenders continue with a diamond, declarer can ruff a club high and get to dummy two more times with trumps to ruff clubs. When the clubs divide 4-3, dummy’s ♦K or ♥K will be an entry to the established club. If the clubs had not split, the spade finesse would still be available.

Openinglead: ♥3.Biddingcommentary: Routine. North is not

strong enough to try for slam and there is no point in showing club support with a balanced hand facing a balanced hand. South’s pattern and poor spade suit make 1NT a better second bid than 1♠.

DefensiveCommentary: This heart combination is one to recognize. It is one of the

few times that third hand does not play high when partner leads low versus notrump, and dummy has low cards. The play of the queen is a far better play than the ace. If partner has the king it doesn’t make any difference which one you play, but if declarer has the king, he dare not duck for fear the lead was from the A-J. If you play the ace and then the queen, declarer can hold up and now when you get in with the ♠K, you (East) will be heartless and partner’s two winning hearts go to bed. Instead of going down one, declarer winds up with an overtrick.

An advanced spinoff of this play is when as third hand you have A-J-x with an outside entry and know partner has led from a five-card suit perhaps headed by the queen. If you play ace-jack, declarer holds up and when you get in with your side’s only side-suit entry, you won’t have any more cards in partner’s suit to return. Bummer. But if you play the jack and declarer wins the king, fearing partner has led from the A-Q, you take four more tricks when you get in. The play also works if declarer has Q-10-x and partner has K-x-x-x-x. If you play the ace and then the jack, covered by the queen, partner won’t know who has the 10 and is likely to take the trick. It would be a little embarrassing to duck the queen only to find you with A-J-10-x! Once partner takes the trick it is curtains.

Pigmented pointsMasterpoints are the unit which measures

bridge achievement in competition. Masterpoints are awarded at ACBL clubs and tournaments in amounts proportional to the size and classification of the event and the rating of the club or tournament.

Blackpoints: awarded at club games. Some special club games award red, gold or silver points.

Redpoints:awarded for section placements at regional tournaments and NABCs. Also awarded at clubs for special events such as the qualifying rounds of the North American Open Pairs and the Grand National Teams.

Goldpoints: awarded for section firsts and overall placing in regionally rated events that have no upper masterpoint restrictions.

Gold points are also awarded for sectional firsts and overall placing in regional events of two or more sessions that have a masterpoint limit of 750 or more points.

Platinumpoints: awarded for NABC+ events.

Silverpoints: awarded for sectional firsts and overall placing at sectional tournaments. Also awarded at Sectional Tournaments at Clubs (StaC).

follows:1. For all NABC+ rated events at NABCs:

Electronic devices, including but not limited to, phones, cameras, PDAs, and others capable of sending or receiving electronic communication are excluded from the playing areas during any session of play. This does not apply to health-related equipment.

2. For all events at an NABC other than a NABC+ rated event: Except for health-related equipment, or by permission of the Director-in-Charge of the tournament, cell phones, audible pagers or similar equipment may not be operated or operable in any manner in the playing area during a session of play. Any such equipment must not be visible during the session. Sponsoring organizations of other ACBL-sanctioned events are encouraged to adopt a similar policy.

3. These restrictions in numbers 1 and 2 above apply to all pairs, team members, captains, coaches, play recorders (except those designated by ACBL) and kibitzers and are in force throughout any actual playing session or segment of play.

4. A violation of any of the restrictions in numbers 1 and 2 above will result in a disciplinary penalty of one full board (12 IMPs at that form of scoring) for the first offense. A second offense will result in disqualification from the event for the pair/team. Kibitzers violating this policy will be removed from the playing area for the remainder of the session.

By general monitoring of the session and participants’ behavior, ACBL has another source of information that may be useful in determining facts and settling issues arising from some types of ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Please summon a director if a problem occurs at the table.

This procedure is intended to assure everyone that the playing field is level and that misbehavior will not be tolerated.

♠♥♦♣Notice to players

Each player must have an ACBL convention card filled out and on the table. Please note that other types of convention cards, such as the WBF convention card or homemade cards that do not sufficiently resemble the ACBL convention card, are not acceptable substitutes.

On this deal from the first qualifying session of the von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs, 3NT is not a great spot on a diamond lead but should come home. Likewise, 4♠ needs the heart finesse when the trumps don’t behave, but the finesse works.

Dlr: South ♠ 7 2 Vul: Both ♥ Q J ♦ A 5 4 2 ♣ Q 10 8 7 3 ♠ 6 ♠ 10 9 8 5 4 ♥ 9 8 7 ♥ K 6 5 4 3 ♦ K 10 9 8 6 ♦ Q J 3 ♣ K J 4 2 ♣ — ♠ A K Q J 3 ♥ A 10 2 ♦ 7 ♣ A 9 6 5

How about 6♣, a contract reached at our table after South showed a game-forcing black two-suiter after a 1NT response by North?

A heart lead make it easy. A diamond lead is far more testing. You win the ♦A, lead a club and gulp when East shows out. Winning the ♣A, you cross to a trump in dummy, West doing best to duck. Now you run the ♥Q, lead the ♥J, covered all round, cash the ♠A and ♥10, pitching dummy’s second spade, and run spade winners.

If West discards, you pitch all the diamonds and lead up to the ♣Q. If West ruffs low, you overruff, ruff a diamond and continue the process. And if West ruffs with the ♣K to lead his last trump, you have just enough winners on a crossruff.

By the way, I don’t have to tell you that’s not the way the play went.

Game or slam?By Barry Rigal

Everyone knows that bridge is an easy game (wink, wink). When people give you a problem hand you focus on the challenge – that helps you to solve the puzzle. In real life, it’s not so easy. Consider this deal from the second qualifying session of the von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs (hands rotated):

Dlr: East ♠ A K 7 Vul: N-S ♥ J 4 3 ♦ K Q J 5 ♣ J 4 2 ♠ 9 8 6 4 ♠ 3 ♥ 9 2 ♥ A K Q 7 6 ♦ A 3 2 ♦ 9 8 7 6 ♣ 10 8 5 3 ♣ Q 7 6 ♠ Q J 10 5 2 ♥ 10 8 5 ♦ 10 4 ♣ A K 9West North East South 1♥ 1♠Pass 2♥ Pass 2♠Pass 3♠ All Pass

Eric Leong, South, had already our side a good score by not driving to game. Let’s go through the

play – you can add your comments.West led the ♥9 to the king. East cashed the

♥Q, then the ace, suggesting mild suit preference for clubs. West pitched an encouraging diamond, so East shifted to a diamond to the ace. West returned a club, and declarer claimed. Who goofed?

West “knew” declarer had five spades, two club winners and two diamonds. How to keep declarer from scoring the diamonds? West must win the diamond and return the suit. Now declarer has no entries to diamonds outside the trump suit when spades turn out to be 4-1. A double finesse in clubs doesn’t work, so declarer is down.

Note that at trick four East must shift to a diamond for West to return the suit. A club shift is immediately fatal, but if he plays a trump instead declarer can succeed – at least at double dummy. The ♣Q is marked with East, so declarer plays three rounds of trumps, ending in dummy and plays the ♣J, covered by the queen and ace, then pulls West’s last trump and leads a diamond. West can duck, but he is endplayed on the second round of diamonds, forced to lead a diamond, allowing declarer to pitch his losing club, or a club into declarer’s K-9.

The expert gameBy Barry Rigal

A two-board round rarely gives each side an opportunity to display their talents as declarer, but in the first qualifying session of the von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs, both pairs shone on one round and earned themselves tops.

Dlr: South ♠ Q 9 Vul: N-S ♥ 9 8 7 5 4 ♦ K 10 8 7 4 ♣ 4 ♠ 10 6 4 3 ♠ J 5 2 ♥ J ♥ A K 10 2 ♦ 9 6 3 ♦ A 5 ♣ A J 9 8 3 ♣ Q 10 7 2 ♠ A K 8 7 ♥ Q 6 3 ♦ Q J 2 ♣ K 6 5West North East South 1NTPass 2♦ Pass 2♥ Pass

The auction at most every table was the same: North transferred to hearts and passed. West led a low spade. It looks normal to cash the spades, pitching a club, then run the ♦J.

A normal unsuccessful declarer would put up the ♣K on East’s return of the suit. After ruffing, declarer would lead a heart from dummy: 2 and 3 from hand? If so, back comes the ♠10, and when declarer ruffs in dummy, East overruffs, pulls trumps and runs the clubs – down four!

Jeff Aker as South led the first heart to the queen and West’s jack. Now he played for trumps to be 4-1 against him, and he simply ran diamonds, letting East score his three trumps and the ♦A.

On the next board of the round, Chris Willenken as East was out for blood. Dlr: West ♠ Q J 6 4 Vul: E-W ♥ 10 9 2 ♦ J 8 7 3 ♣ 6 5 ♠ K 10 9 8 ♠ A 5 3 ♥ K 6 5 3 ♥ A J 8 7 ♦ A 9 4 ♦ Q 10 6 5 ♣ Q 10 ♣ J 3 ♠ 7 2 ♥ Q 4 ♦ K 2 ♣ A K 9 8 7 4 2West North East South1♦ Pass 1♥ 2♣2♥ Pass 3♦ Pass3♥ All Pass

The defenders led two rounds of clubs and shifted to spades. Willenken won in hand and misguessed trumps, won the spade return in dummy and drew the last trump. This was the ending: ♠ J 6 ♥ — ♦ J 8 7 3 ♣ — ♠ 10 9 ♠ 5 ♥ 6 ♥ 8 ♦ A 9 4 ♦ Q 10 6 5 ♣ — ♣ — ♠ — ♥ — ♦ K 2 ♣ 9 8 7 4

Willenken was all set to lead a diamond to the ace and duck the return to South for the ruff-sluff. Aker as South could see this coming, so when declarer led a diamond toward the ace, he unblocked his king! Now if North had held better diamond spots he would have defeated the partscore. As it was, Willenken had nine tricks and all the matchpoints for his side.

At many tables on this deal from the second qualifying session of the von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs, North-South bid unopposed to 3NT, usually 2NT- 3NT.

Dlr: North ♠ 7 6 3 2 Vul: None ♥ K 7 3 ♦ 10 6 5 4 ♣ A 5 ♠ Q J 5 4 ♠ 9 8 ♥ J 8 4 ♥ 10 9 ♦ 9 8 3 ♦ K 7 2 ♣ 7 6 2 ♣ K Q 9 8 4 3 ♠ A K 10 ♥ A Q 6 5 2 ♦ A Q J ♣ J 10

West has a “textbook” low spade lead, but don’t listen to the textbooks! If the ♠A K are very likely to be on your right, you want to lead a high spade from the West hand, otherwise it will cost you dearly.

At a few tables, North-South got overboard when East preempted in clubs. How would you play 6♥ on a club lead?

Best is to win the ♣A and take a diamond finesse (East should falsecard with the 7 or 2 as appropriate – maybe declarer will play East for 3-2 in the red suits.

If declarer guesses accurately he will play the ♥A at trick three, cross to the ♥K, repeat the diamond finesse, then cash the ♦A, the ♠A and ♠K, and exit with his club, resulting in this ending: ♠ 7 6 ♥ 7 ♦10 ♣ — ♠ Q J ♠ — ♥ J ♥ — ♦ — ♦ — ♣ 7 ♣ K 9 4 3 ♠ 10 ♥ Q 6 5 ♦ — ♣ —

East must return a club for a ruff-sluff. South pitches a spade from hand, ruffing in dummy, then ruffs a spade to hand to pull the last trump and claim. Ta-da!

Remarkably, Milan Macura playing with Michal Kopecki found this line in 4♥ after opening a strong club and hearing a simple overcall in clubs. +480 was worth every single matchpoint in his section.

“He was in a lot of pain and should not have been playing,” said Nickell, “but he didn’t want to let the team down.”

After Freeman’s death, Nickell began a partnership with Ralph Katz that got off to a

sensational start. In his first international tournament after joining the team, Katz was part of the winning Bermuda Bowl squad in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Nickell said he and Katz are still feeling their

way. “We’re learning how we

think about certain situations. Richard and I were like an old married couple. We both knew what the other was thinking.”

Nickell and Freeman met in the Sixties but didn’t start on their impressive run of North American championships until the early Nineties, when they formed a team with Bob Hamman, Bobby Wolff, Jeff Meckstroth and Eric Rodwell. Paul Soloway replaced Wolff in the late Nineties, and Zia Mahmood replaced Soloway when he died in 2007.

The team won the first of nine Spingold Knockout Teams in 1993 and also has seven victories in the Reisinger Board-a-Match Teams.

Freeman was well known as a former “quiz kid” who graduated from college at age 15. As a tournament director, he was legendary for his speed with a pencil in completing recap sheets when all scoring was done by hand. He was also known for lightning-fast analysis at the bridge table.

Nickell remembers his friend for his sense of humor and genteel manner. “He grew up in Chicago, but he was a Southern gentleman.”

The Insider has done his best to keep you up to date on the progress of the New Amazing Building that ACBL has been building in downtown Horn Lake MS. Since the Spring NABC, construction has been completed, the various snafus have been un-snaffed and the caravan of employees traveled down I-55 to their new work-home. We brought the warehouse under the same roof as the offices. We installed a high speed fiber optic communication network. We have several high tech conference rooms. We were able to align departments that work together daily in close proximity to one another. And, in a move everyone here in New Orleans will appreciate, we kept everything on one level — no waiting on elevators! The staff has gotten used to the changes cubicle life brings and seems to be enjoying the new facility.

The most impressive features are the Bridge Museum and ACBL Hall of Fame. The design is beautiful. The interactive exhibits are chock full of information. The Trump Indicators tell

an impressive story from our history. And, in a word, the whole thing is amazing. The Insider strongly suggests that all of you take a road trip and see what ACBL has to show you in our great new facility. Meeting the people you have communicated with over the years is great, but a visit to the Museum and Hall of Fame make it a trip of your bridge lifetime. Watch for the feature story and slew of pictures in the August Bulletin.

The Insider will talk more about the great local team in future missives but he wants to take a second of your time to mention John Federico, our great host and tournament chair for this NABC. The last time we were in New Orleans, Larry Federico, John’s brother was the chair and did an incredible job. John is proving to be his brother’s twin in every sense of the word. They are both true Southern gentleman who keep the whole thing in perspective and want to do everything they can to keep the players playing and having a good time. Give John a big “thanks” when you see him.

The last set of deals from the 2010 European Championships in Ostend, Belgium.

Wintheboard, notmatchSviatlana BadrankovaThe Belarus women’s team has its first

appearance at the Euro Bridge stage (Bravo! Editor) so we are here looking for experience not for results, definitely. That’s why each “lucky” board played versus well-known opponents brings huge excitement. In round 21, Denmark – Belarus, we were lucky enough to find Dorte Cilleborg and Dorthe Schaltz playing 4♥, not an easy 4♠ on this deal. Dlr: West ♠ A Q J 5 4 3 Vul: Both ♥ 9 5 3 ♦ — ♣ K 10 3 2 ♠ 9 7 ♠ 10 6 ♥ 10 6 ♥ A 7 2 ♦ A K 9 7 6 5 ♦ Q J 10 8 4 ♣ J 9 8 ♣ A Q 4 ♠ K 8 2 ♥ K Q J 8 4 ♦ 3 2 ♣ 7 6 5

West North East SouthPass 1♠ 2♦ 2♥4♦ 4♥ All Pass

After the start of the ♦A, declarer ruffed and played a low heart to the queen in her hand. When the ace didn’t appear, she ruffed her second and last diamond and returned to hand with the ♠K to play a heart honor to East’s ace. Now spade return nailed declarer to the table and the defense continuation was as easy as it was evident: either East ruffs the third spade and waits for two club tricks (easy) or, after a club lead from the table, East turns on straightforward reasoning: only if partner has ♣J do the defenders have a chance (evident). We scored 5 IMPs in this board (plus 100 at our table and plus 100 from the closed room where our teammates beat 5♦.

The winning line for declarer – difficult to see – is to play two rounds of spades ending in hand and only then play a heart. This “dentist’s coup” extracts East’s second spade after which there is no defense.

The remainder of the match was not so easy and only the last board with plus scores in both rooms allowed us to finish with a two-digit record – 10-20 VP for Denmark. As the phrase about battle and war became proverbial, I’d like to find one more meaning for it: we lost a lot of matches here, but we won our two weeks of splendid bridge competition.

On Thursday morning, Iceland was taking on

Sweden in one of many Nordic battles during these championships. Only 54 IMPs were shared between the teams in this very close match, which ended 16-14 in Icelandic favor.

Dlr: West ♠ 10 3 Vul: Both ♥ 8 7 6 2 ♦ Q J 10 7 5 4 ♣ 3 ♠ A J 7 4 ♠ K 9 5 ♥ Q 9 4 ♥ A J ♦ 9 8 6 2 ♦ A K ♣ 4 2 ♣ A K 10 9 8 7 ♠ Q 8 6 2 ♥ K 10 5 3 ♦ 3 ♣Q J 6 5 Open room: West North East South Nyström Haraldsson Bertheau Magnusson Pass Pass 1♣ Pass 1♦ 2♦ Pass Pass 3♠ Pass 4♠ All Pass

In the closed room, Jonsson had no problem making 11 tricks after a diamond lead. Declarer simply made sure of his game, establishing his clubs, then squeezing Fallenius as South for his last overtrick.

Things were very much more difficult in the open room, where Nyström probably managed to make one of this championship’s best plays by a declarer. He got the ♣3 as the opening lead, won with the ace. A spade to the ace and a club towards dummy, on which Haraldsson decided to discard the ♦4. Nyström then ruffed a club on the way back with the ♠J and continued with his third trump to dummy’s king. Another club was ruffed with his last trump, establishing the suit. This was the ending: ♠ — ♥ 8 7 2 ♦ Q J 10 7 ♣ — ♠ — ♠ 9 ♥ Q 9 4 ♥ A J ♦ 9 8 6 2 ♦ A K ♣ — ♣ 10 9 ♠ Q 8 ♥ K 10 5 3 ♦ 3 ♣ —

Nyström now played a diamond to dummy’s king and continued with his clubs. Magnusson could ruff when he wanted but was then thrown in to give away a trick in hearts. Excellent play for a flat board.

This was from the match between England and Sweden in the women’s teams.

West North East South Sivelind Senior Rimstedt Dhondy 1♣ Pass 1♠ Pass 3NT Pass 6NT All Pass Closed room West North East South Stockdale Sjöberg Brown Rimstedt 1♣ Pass 1♦ Pass 1♥ Pass 3NT Pass 4NT Pass 6♣ Pass 6NT All Pass Both tables arrived in the same contract. West was declarer in the open room, East the declarer in the closed room. Both declarers could easily count to 11 tricks after setting up the diamond suit. Clubs being 3-3 or and a single or double squeeze combined would most probably somehow create the last needed one. Let’s say as West you get a spade lead that goes to the 9, jack and ace. A reasonable plan would be to unblock the ♦K, win the ♣A and continue with a club to dummy. With the actual layout, you are rewarded by getting the knowledge that clubs are 5-1. When you collect the ♦A and clear that suit you might discard one card from each of the majors from your hand. North gets in again and probably plays back a heart (that is best for the defense), leaving the following position: ♠ Q 7 6 ♥ J 9 6 5 ♦ — ♣ -— ♠ 10 3 ♠ K ♥ A 10 4 ♥ K 8 7 ♦ — ♦ 10 3 ♣ K 8 ♣ 5 ♠ 8 ♥ Q 2 ♦ 8 ♣ 10 9 6

Win the heart return with the ace, play a spade to the king, cash the two diamonds discarding the ♥10 and then the ♣8 (unless South unguards that suit – if she keeps her club winner she will be able to keep only two hearts). That will force North to keep her ♠Q and she will only be able to hold on to two of her hearts when a club is played to the king. Either a spade or a heart will be the last needed trick – a single squeeze played as a double.

Both declarers misplayed the slam, going one off, by not timing the squeeze. Sivelind had a much harder task to succeed because Nevena Senior found the spade lead, and then shifted to the heart when she got in with the ♦Q. However, it was not impossible to succeed even then.
