Ideas & Inspiration.

OnlineResources. Not sure what you can do to support Daffodil Day? Here are a few simple ideas to inspire you! Click on the links for more details.

Calling all Tasmanian artists, crafters, hobbyists and dabblers!

We want to move away from selling commercial merchandise at our Daffodil Day stalls and bring a local flavor this August, with a focus on sustainability. After much brainstorming and discussions with members of the community we came up with an idea...

We are asking that you cut, sew, stick, glue, knit and crochet for Daffodil Day.

We’d love to have your creations for sale on our stalls and are asking that you donate your time and materials to help us raise funds for Cancer Council Tasmania. It could be on a yellow theme... or a daffodil theme.. it’s up to you.

Here’s some ideas on the type of things you could make:• Gift / greeting cards• Jewelery• Small hanging ornaments• Dream catchers• Crocheted daffodil pins

• Blankets• Cushion covers• Candles• Quilts• Bunting

Do you have another idea? Then let us know on the Registration Form or contact us.

How to make your daffodil:The flowers work best with at least 4 coordinating colours. • Colour 1 - lemon: cut 12 petal

pieces and 4 trumpet pieces • Colour 2 - yellow: cut 12 petal

pieces, 2 trumpet pieces and 2 inner pieces

• Colour 3 - white/natural: cut 12 petal pieces, 2 trumpet pieces and 1 inner piece

• Colour 4 - mustard/orange: cut 4 trumpet pieces and 3 inner pieces

Cutting your shapesTemplates are available the link. For each flower you will need:• 6 x petal pieces• 2 x trumpet pieces• 1 x inner piece• 1 x floral wire and tape

Making your flowersHeat your glue gun whilst you wrap your florist wire in tape, allowing an overhang at each end; neatly trim the overhang.

Cut two vertical slits into each inner piece, stopping about two thirds down.

Squeeze a vertical line of glue down the centre bottom half of the inner piece and glue your wire firmly into place. Wrap and glue the sides around. This forms the centre of your flower.

Squeeze a horizontal line of glue along the bottom of one trumpet piece and wrap around the inner flower piece, aligning the shapes at the bottom. Repeat with the second trumpet piece, on the opposite side. Place a small dot of glue at the top corners of one trumpet piece and stick to the other to form a tube shape.

Squeeze a horizontal line of glue along the bottom of one petal piece and glue to the trumpet, taking the bottom of the petal slightly lower than the base of the trumpet. Pinch each side of the petal at the base. Repeat with two more petals, making sure you space the three petals evenly around the trumpet.

Glue the remaining three petals in the gaps between your first three petals, this time not pinching the shapes. And there you have it – your daffodil is now finished. Cut or fold the bottom of the wire to give a good fit inside your vase/jam jar. Repeat the steps above to make your other flowers.

Decorate your jam jar however you like. You could cut a strip of fabric with pinking shears and finish with lace ribbon, baker’s twine and a handwritten tag.

How to make your daffodil:Using a pencil, draw the outline of your flower on your yellow card and carefully cut it out. An adult might want to help with this part.

Using the Glu Dots, stick the green lolly stick or straw to the back of the flower.

Using another Glu Dot, stick the mini muffin case in the middle of the flower. Now admire your pretty daffodil!

How to make your daffodil:Cut two pieces of the white felt into the shape of 3 petals, approximately 5 cm wide. If you want to make them into hair clips, keep them small.

Place one on top of the other and make a few stitches to hold them together.

Cut a thin strip of orange felt. With the tip of your scissors, make small “snips” into the felt strip along one edge.

Roll it up into a cute little ball and stitch it together from the inside so that the knot doesn’t show (tip: use two stands of embroidery thread). This flower “center” will give the daffodil some dimension.

Flip the flower petals over and give it a little pinch and make a few stitches. This will give the petals some dimension. And last, you will sew the flower center on to the flower starting from the back so that your knot will not show.

ConstructionUse pliers to bend over 1 cm at each end of the florist wire. Wind one green pipe cleaner around 26 cm of the florist wire and bend over 1 cm at each end of the pipe cleaner. (This is just to pad the stem out a little bit and stop the wire from slipping.)Position the leaf on the stem and wind the exposed pipe cleaner form the leaf over the stem.Sew the stem over the 26 cm of florist wire covered by the pipe cleaner (and remember to keep the other 2 cm free).

Poke the free end of the florist wire through the magic circle at the middle of the petals and cover this with the yellow pipe cleaner to make a stamen.

Sew the flower to the top of the stem. Bend the florist wire at the base of the flower so that the flower faces outwards.

Making Up:Arrange the petals so they are alternately completely on top or completely underneath their neighbours. Use the loose ends of yarn to sew them into position.Diagram showing arrangement petals.

Feed the i-cord stamen at the centre of the petals through the small hole in the base of the trumpet. Sew the base of the trumpet into position.Cut a length of covered wire such that it will just fit inside the i-cord stem. Cover both ends in gummed tape and insert it into the knitted tube. Sew the cast off end of the tube to the centre of the reverse side of the petals.

Insert the stem into the knitted spathe so that the flat part of the spathe points towards the flower. Sew it into position so that there is only around a centimetre of green stem showing between the spathe and the petals.

Once all remaining loose ends have been woven in bend the stem at right angles at the bottom of the spathe.
