DACRE VILLAGE HALLAt its recent meeting the Management Committeerecorded a vote of thanks to Bill Petty, who hasdecided to step down as a Trustee and committeemember. Bill served on the committee for overtwenty-five years and his contribution, and that ofhis wife June, to Village Hall affairs over the yearshas been sustained and invaluable. He played aleading role in the major hall renovation scheme inthe 1990’s, where his professional backgroundcontributed greatly to fund-raising, and to theplanning and organisation of the project. His adviceand experience, not to mention his sense ofhumour, will be greatly missed.

Get your free centralheating installedbefore winter!

Eden District Council iscontinuing to help those without full centralheating to get it installed in their homes. This localscheme, which is being administered by AllerdaleBorough Council, could pay for the installation ofa full central heating system. This would either bea gas system including the connection to the gasmain or, if this isn’t technically or economicallyfeasible, an oil-fuelled system. This full centralheating system is free to eligible customers on afirst come, first served basis. To be eligible, customers have to meet certaincriteria. They must be either in receipt of certainbenefits, or have a total annual household incomeof less than £15,600 and live in a property builtbefore 1920. Other households can qualifybecause they spend a disproportionate amount oftheir income on their energy bills. The propertymust not already have a gas main connection oran existing central heating system fuelled by oil or LPG. Electrically heated homes or those with asolid fuel back boiler and a partial central heating system may also qualify. Further details of allqualifying criteria are available from the Council.Eden District Council joined forces with Allerdale Borough Council, Carlisle City Council and SouthLakeland District Council to bid for funding from the government’s £25m Central Heating Fund. This successful bid has provided £1.14m, to be split across the four districts helping local peopleheat their homes. The Councils are working in partnership with npower who will be providingfurther funding and installing the central heating systems. Northern Gas Networks / National GridGas will be funding and installing the gas mains.

As the funding is limited, customers are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. For full details of the scheme, see if you are eligible, and to request application forms, please callthe Housing Team on: 01768 212490 or email [email protected] or visitwww.eden.gov.uk/cumbriacentralheatingfund

A First at Soulands Studio!I care, Eye care workshop 17th September

1.30pm – 4 pmHow to maximize and prolong good vision

for as long as possibly naturallyOn 17th September, Yogacharini Sonia Allen-Wall,will be teaching a programme using both herknowledge of yoga for eye health and Chineseacupressure combined with The Bates methodfor improving eyesight naturally.Dr William Bates had a degree from the college ofphysicians and surgeons USA, and was aninstructor in ophthalmology in New York.Soulands Studio, Dacre, a purpose built health and lifestyle studio running an eclectic mix of classesand workshops, is the creation of local resident and business woman Christine Armstrong, founderof Dacre based Thermafleece, the UK’s foremost developer of natural sheep’s wool insulation.A peaceful, welcoming and intimate space, which has been designed to create an atmosphere ofrelaxation and calm, the studio offers specialist courses for small groups, focusing on individualized,in-depth teaching.Christine commented - “Sonia is very passionate about this topic. Our Modern lifestyle of staring atscreens whether it is a computer, TV or mobile is detrimental, damaging our eyesight: Over the lastcouple of decades there has been a massive increase in short sightedness (new scientist) To quotethe Daily Mail “those with 20:20 vision are in a clear minority with nearly 6 in 10 needing glasses orcontact lenses. One in five 16 to 24 year olds and a third of 24 to 34 year olds rely on correctiveeyeware.” According to the Guardian there is an epidemic among the young of short sightedness.Over 25 years ago Sonia’s eyesight was deteriorating and tried to find out if there was anything shecould do to help herself. There was …… The Bates method but no one in Cumbria teaching it, soSonia decided to train as a Bates practitioner herself. Over time and with practise, Sonia’s eyesightsignificantly improved, a result later confirmed by her optician. This was also the case of several ofher students who followed her programme. This programme does not claim to be a cure-all/fix-allsolution, but a positive aid to better eyesight. The I care, Eye Care workshop is just one of a number of specialist courses currently running atSoulands Studio. In October there is a one-day course on the ’ Subtle Anatomy of Yoga’ and localBeekeeper Eddie Kay is currently hosting a series of 7 monthly courses on the art of Bee keeping.Plans are also afoot to hold photography and painting sessions. The studio also welcomes enquiriesfrom independent practitioners who would like to hire this unique space to host their own classes. For more information on our regular weekly or monthly classes, specialist courses and workshops,or for details on the hiring of Soulands Studio studio please visit www.soulandsstudio.com, or youcan telephone Alison on 017684 86285 or email:[email protected].

Dacre Parish CouncilDacre Parish Council’s response to Highways England Route Strategies consultation

on priorities for work to trunk routes in the UKDacre Parish Council made the following response -

● At this junction the east-bound carriageway of the A66 is a moderately severe downhillstretch with a long left-hand curve that masks the junction to both traffic on the A66, and totraffic on the C3019 from Newbiggin wishing to join the A66. Even when traffic is travellingwithin the 70mph limit at this point on the east-bound A66 there is little time for error, eitherby pedestrians or drivers.

● The junction is the crossing point between two very active villages. It is used by pedestrianchildren on their way to school, by equestrian traffic between the villages, and by cyclists (itis promoted as a local cycle route by the District Council.) There is no designated crossingpoint. Any alternative route involves a detour of almost a mile.

● There have been at least two pedestrian deaths at the crossing point, probably related to thevisibility issues. There have been numerous vehicle accidents along the stretch, possiblyrelated to vehicle speeds, and the decline and curvature of the east-bound carriageway.

● The Parish Council have consulted with Cumbria Highways and Highways Englandrepresentatives about the issues on the stretch of the A66. They suggest that appropriatemeasures are considered to reduce the risks to both drivers and other users at this site.

—------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dacre PC is always interested to hear of residents' concerns about the A66 and other highwaysissues. The Parish Council has been unable to obtain from either the Police or Highways anystatistics related to accidents; nor the survey that was carried out at the junction last year. So localknowledge about incidents passed on to the Parish Council is appreciated.
