Departures & Arrivals

We celebrate the truth that we are the sum of all our experiences. Tell your story through your home.

Page 5: D&A Storybook 2015

D&A was born from love of travel and culture.

We carefully assemble a collection of homeware handmade by craftsmen and designers.

We love discovering the culture, stories and soul behind their work and feel compelled to tell them. Most of their work is made of unique natural materials manipulated with unconventional ways. From our passion, we commit to revive the art of

the craftsman.

Our aesthetic is global eclectic chic. We dream of a home where your different preferences, different cultural backgrounds, different life stories come together harmoniously to represent your unique

personality.

Our Philosophy

Live mindful. When you hold a piece of handmade work, you glimpse into the mind of the artisan. Elements in nature - earth, air, sun, water - conspire to become a substance that is transformed by the artisan into furniture that serves a purpose in your daily life. Practicing deep appreciation rekindles your connection to nature. You feel less satisfied with short-term use that only creates waste. And when something lasts longs with you, it becomes a keeper of your memory, a reminder of your life to others. You continue the story that the maker starts.

Pieces with soul, steeped in culture.

Live meaningful. Meaning comes from improving the lives of others by what you do. By supporting the art of the craftsman, you foster creative communities all around the world. You give them opportunity to make a living. More than that, you encourage artisans to think creative, to see the beauty of their tradition and to nurture passion in their art. Knowing that our things come from good and our money goes to greater good, we feel a sense of fulfillment.

Live beautiful. Beauty in itself is a noble pursuit. It comes from the unique stamp of the maker. It comes from the time and attention spent to design and craft. Nature is a timeless and inexhaustible source of beauty. Materials and inspiration taken from nature bring vitality to your home. And because beauty permeates, you cultivate a sense of beauty in other aspects of your life as well. When you live beautiful everyday, you lead a richer existence.

Art and soul of the archipelago. To say that the universe of Ito Kish is eclectic would be accurate – he has a fondness for marrying different creative styles and a variety of design techniques – but at the same time insufficient. His curious eye is drawn to a range that moves from French and Country to Filipiniana and Modern Asian, but he is also graced with a finely tuned sensibility that results in spaces and furniture pieces that have a certain disciplined exuberance about them. A writer once said, “What a K I S H environment really is, is crisp, contemporary, wordly yet understated.”

“I was inspired by the intricate balustrades in our old home, since

the Spanish brought it into the Filipino design sensibility. I thought that such a well-crafted thing deserves much more

than being a decorative element of stairs and balconies. I named this seat after my

mother, Gregoria Kish. An element always forgotten by others but nonetheless textured, intricate and always strong and firm. At first glance frail but can

actually support a great deal of weight.”

“When I was young, my grandmother Basilisa can easily repair a dining chair with rattan weave. I watched with amazement at

how she creates the pattern. In designing the collection, I looked at tribal patterns, fabrics, and baskets to come up with weave patterns.

Artisans in small neighborhoods get a livelihood in weaving the collection.”

Clever functionality that derives wisdom from heritage.

The Santamaria Stool. Santamaria derives its design from a tribal harvest basket called a tingkop. The Tagbanua tribe of Palawan traces its origins to hunter-gatherer migration from Polynesia. They are one of Southeast Asia’s oldest surviving tribes. As they settled into agriculture, the Tagbanuas made baskets like the tiny three-inch tingkop for storing rice seeds. The original baskets have a tiny, almost fabric-like quality. Insanely thin and flat rattan strips are woven tight. Not a broken rice seed slips out. Bigger versions continue to be made for harvest. But as for the tingkop, only a handful of tribesmen with the skill and patience required are left. Tingkop baskets weather sun and rain. They see many planting, harvesting and storing seasons. It is this kind of longevity and spirit we at D&A seek in our pieces.

VIVIAN DENIM AND WOOL RUG

Handwoven Wool and Repurposed Denim

L160 X W230

Vivian is definitely not your regular woolen rug. The monochromatic blue patterns are created using varying hues of denim offcuts from jeans factories. These offcuts usually get thrown away but in this rug, they are given a new purpose in fashioning a fresh, young and exciting look for the modern context. Vivian’s design is a creative revival of the centuries-old kilim rugmaking tradition.

NAVI stems from many sources of inspiration, but its spirit comes from the motivation to re-use and renew cast-off ship ropes and create a continuous livelihood for a local recycling community.

NAVI uses reclaimed marine rope - discarded ship ropes from large boats and vessels that frequently dock in Cebu, Philippines. From these disposed ropes, local communities saw an opportunity to recycle and create a source of revenue for their families. This novelty nylon rope is hidden within the huge ship ropes and despite the worn-out exterior, the unexposed rope inside is silky but durable, and in great shape.

Sika is a variety of rattan with the highest quality peel. It is a vine that grows by climbing trees in the rainforest. Because of this, rainforests are preserved in

order to yield the Sika rattan. The craftsman inlays sika rattan one at a time in an off-centre dynamic sunburst pattern. The addition simple tripod wooden legs further complements this

natural decor.

RATTAN CAFE SET

Split RattanChair: L59.5 X W49 X H68

Table: D70 X H74

The Cafe Rattan brings a new perspective on how to decorate and construct a chair. Using a classic modern silhouette of Scandinavian chairs, the craftsman developed a distinct technique of splitting rattan. The chair’s legs seem to divide to become backrests and armrests. The splitting of rattan - a unique, delicate process that only skilled rattan craftsmen can do, even becomes more difficult with our use of rare thick 38mm diameter rattan poles. Bending the rattan into a curved backrest by applying heat is

also a highly specialized art.

Inspired by the lightness of Scandinavian furniture style, a complementary cafe table was designed with an anigre-veneered top

and simple tripod wood legs.
