Hello, everybody. Ending one year and starting another is always a joyous moment where we rejuvenate ourselves in our calling as Rotarians.

The last years have undoubtedly been of great progress for our District. We ended one campaign against Polio and began to wind down another. We dealt a crippling blow to ignorance in sponsoring scores to our peace centers and made our district more visible. We stood by families and our communities through offering health solutions and dealt with maternal mortality in a commendable way. We have definitely begun to see signs of growth among our communities even as many are still struggling to get better livelihoods.

There’s no doubt that 2014-15 will bring even more change. As we head into the New Year, I’m hopeful that we have what it takes to face the new year - to grow our Rotary District, deal the last blow to Polio, offer more scholarships and strengthen Rotary, our unparalleled Philanthropic and Premier Networking base.

I’m hopeful because of what we see every year, when Rotarians

come together to fight polio and improve lives in our communities. We have always unselfishly chattered new ways of doing things just to make the world a better place.

It is always good to see members of Rotary District 9212 do the right thing for those underprivileged among us. We have clothed and fed thousands in the past. Our relentless drive to address illiteracy is such a momentous thing for me. All these have only been possible because of you. Whether online or by drawing a cheque, big or small, you have changed lives and turned around countless lives.

More than anything else, Rotarians are the ones who make me hopeful about 2014-15. As I’ve said before, we are the voice of hope to our communities. In many ways, the actions we take in the months ahead will help determine what kind of District we want to be.

I urge every one of us to do the noble thing and invite a business man or a professional to your clubs. One more Rotarian means several more lives changed. Remember to carry your candle and light your world. We all have a responsibility, to let everyone know what we do and how they too can join in and take action.

As District Governor, I promise to do everything I can to make District 9212, a place where everybody is somebody. Hard work and responsibility will characterize my year of leadership - one where everyone is informed and involved. That’s the Rotary I believe in. That’s the Rotary District we’ve always known.

I’m confident that if we work together, then we will move this District forward and guarantee many in our communities the better lives they deserve.

Thank you for your support. From Hiral and I, Happy 2014-15.

1st November 2013: Presidents Elect streamed in to Gracia Gardens Hotel-Nairobi to bond and build the Best Class Team and know each other as key partners for the year 2014-15.

The scenery, both in and out doors was characterized by manicured lawns, greenery and a waterfall. The ambience was good for work and play. It was a perfect choice of venue.

The Pre-Pets was organized by District Governor Bimal and his team to foster bonding among club Presidents 2014-15 who have a heavy task ahead of them. “Two cannot walk together unless they agree.” This was the mission, to agree how best the Best Team could work together to take District9212tothenextlevel.

As scores streamed in to the main conference hall, they were met with a hearty welcome by the District Governor and some members of the District Strategic Planning Team. The Team building facilitator, District RLI Chair, Jeff Bamford and his

co trainer CC Sally Gitoho, were present to begin the job!

After the Rotary grace was said; Jeff invited the District Governor 2014-15 to a ‘salimia watu wako’ affair who in turn revealed his purpose for the invite. “You are the Best Team” he asserted to the already charged team. “We are Better Together” he added passionately.

All listened keenly to their soon to be Governor before the hard work of teambuilding begun with interesting activities. At lunch break, the Club Presidents 2014-2015 took photos and video footage for the 90th DCA and shouted in unison, “See you there!”

15th February 2014: Each year, District Governors Elect train incoming club presidents and club officials for their year of leadership.

After months of intense preparations, the presidents elect training seminar was held at the 5 star Laico Regency Hotel in Nairobi. The event that hosted 150 Club presidents and leaders was presided over by the District Governor Bimal Kantaria assisted by immediate past District overnor Harry Mugo, District Governor Elect Teshome Kebede and past district governors and trainers among others.

A thematic song cut across the room. With lights off, a candle light appeared in darkness. Artfully organized, the strategic planning committee dashed to the podium each carrying a candle. A viral candle lighting session was witnessed as teary delegates carried their candles high in song.

While launching the 2014-15 Rotary Theme, the District Governor applauded the work being done by Rotary clubs and past district leaders. He

also reaffirmed his commitment to support and strengthen Rotary clubs and continue with the noble work of the Past District Governors. “You are the backbone of this district. Your commitment and dedication in our year of leadership will determine what legacy we leave behind”, Bimal asserted strongly.

1st February 2014, Laico Regency - Nairobi.Every February, District leaders convene for training at the District Team Training Seminar (DTTS) for the upcoming Rotary year.

This year, the trainers sounded a renewed call to philanthropy to meet the world’s most pressing problems. “We are the voice of hope to the world” District Governor Bimal Kantaria added, that now is the moment “..to grow our District 9212 to become what our forefathers intended it to be, the most “Trusted Philanthropic and Premier Networking organization in Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea & South Sudan.” DGE Teshome Kebede of Ethiopia welcomed a “new year of commitment” underscoring the vision of professional and business people coming together to tackle the world’s toughest challenges under Rotary.

DG Bimal unveiled the Rotary theme- Light Up Rotary- in a spectacular way. A dimmed ball room and somber mood, surrounded the viral lighting of yellow and blue candles from the podium to the

furthest end. A choice theme song for the year - Carry your Candle- filled the air in the room decked out in blue and yellow Rotary corporate colors, every one up standing and singing in unison.

For months prior to this year’s DTTS, an extraordinary amount of strategic planning meetings tookplaceonanexpansiverangeofissuesofkeyimportance to the District. Between July 2013 and January 2014, DG Bimal held numerous consultative meetings in Kenya and Ethiopia, regarding the leadership and growth of the District. He said “…it was truly the marathon of District diplomacy and planning.

He also attended several trainings by RIP Gary Huang.

To sum up the DTTS, DG Bimal quipped “Where else do you find people of all nationalities, races, tribes, professions and creeds gathered like this, with a common goal and interest?”

As we approached the final quarter of the Rotary year 2013/14, it is no wonder that everyone who laboured hard felt strained and was looking forward to finishing well.

Our assurance that good work will continue was the new and vibrant energy we saw at the incoming officers training, that is Presidents’ Elect Training Seminar (PETS) and the Country Officers Training Seminar (COTS).

The Ethiopian team enjoyed a refreshing full day training led by the District Governor 2014/15, Bimal Kantaria, accompanied by his vibrant leadership team from Kenya and Ethiopia. The training was held at the prestigious Hilton Hotel Addis Ababa on the 22nd of February, 2014.

The training began with the introduction of the incoming officers followed by a heart speech from DG Bimal Kantaria. Soon after, he unveiled the Rotary Theme 2014-15 - “Light Up Rotary” in a beautiful way with lighting of candles accompanied with a theme song- Carry your Candle” which brought renewed energy to all the Rotarians in attendance.

Afterwards, breakout sessions were conducted with focal target areas of club, country and district officer’s teams. Training on the areas of the Rotary Foundation, District and Club structure as well as strategic planning were given. This gave a good insight to the new officers on how to lead their clubs effectively for the 2014/15 Rotary year. The District 9212 vision 2014-15 is “To be the most effective, trusted premier networking, and philanthropic organization in Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, and South Sudan”.

RI President-elect Gary C.K. Huang chose Light Up Rotary as his theme for 2014-15. Huang is urging club members to Light Up Rotary by hosting a Rotary Day in their community, continuing our fight against polio, and increasing club membership.

“Light Up Rotary is more than our theme. It is how we make a difference - every day, in every club, and every country we serve.”
