Cat 3126B HEUI Engine. Caterpillarelectronic engines meet worldwideemission requirements for the EU Stage II regulations. With the HEUIFuel system, injection pressure isindependent of engine speed andprovides maximum fuel deliveryefficiency with low emissions. The Cat 3126B engines are equippedwith an electronic air inlet heater. This warms the air in the air inletmanifold for easier starting and reduceswhite smoke on cold starts. Machineswill automatically activate the timed airinlet heater prior to engine startup.
Turbocharged and Aftercooled.A wellmatched turbocharger and air-to-air aftercooler results in higherpower while keeping rpm steady andexhaust temperatures low.
Torque Rise. The direct injectedelectronic fuel system provides acontrolled fuel delivery increase as the engine lugs back from rated speed.This results in increased horsepowerabove rated power. A combination ofincreased torque rise and maximumhorsepower improves response,provides greater drawbar pull and fasterdozing cycles. Torque Converter.The D6N single stagetorque converter efficiently responds tochanging load conditions by providingtorque multiplication, thereforeincreasing drawbar power. It alsoprovides protection to the drive traincomponents by preventing shock loadsfrom heavy dozing applications. Thistorque converter is efficiently matchedto the power train components andprovides the superior performance youneed.
Auto-Shift/Auto-Kickdown. Auto-shiftallows the operator to pre-select aforward and reverse gear for easy,efficient directional changes. Auto-shiftsettings include:■ First forward to second reverse.■ Second forward to second reverse.■ Second forward to first reverse.
Auto-kickdown allows the transmissionto automatically downshift whensignificant load increases are detected.
Transmission. The proven planetarypowershift transmission features threespeeds forward and three speeds reverseand utilizes large diameter, highcapacity, oil cooled clutches. To maximize the life of the transmission,the planetary design distributes loadsand stresses over multiple gears.■ Controlled throttle shifting regulates
engine speed during high-energydirectional shifts for smootheroperation and longer component life.
■ The transmission and bevel gear setare modular by design, and easilyslide into the machine’s rear case,even with the ripper installed.
■ Forced oil flow lubricates and coolsclutch packs to provide maximumclutch life.
Steering Clutch and Brakes. Oil cooled,hydraulically actuated, large diameterplates and clutch discs provide highertorque capacity and increased servicelife.
Elevated Final Drive. Final drives areisolated from ground and work toolinduced impact loads for extendedpower train life.
Electronic Steering and TransmissionControls. The D6N offers bothDifferential Steering and Finger TipControls for steering. Both systemsdeliver the control the operators needfor all applications. Soft touch buttonslocated on the steering controls shift theelectronically controlled transmission.
Electronic Clutch Pressure Control.The D6N has an additional transmissionshifting feature for added performanceand operator comfort – the ElectronicClutch Pressure Control (ECPC). This unique feature provides smoothershifting by regulating and modulatingthe individual clutches based on currentoperating conditions.
Power Turn Differential SteeringA D6N equipped with differential steering maintains power to both tracks while turning. Operators have control of machine speed, direction and steering with the tiller bar controller, while maximizing production.

Tiller Bar Control System. The tiller barcontrol system allows for simultaneouscomfortable, one-handed steering,direction and transmission control.■ The differential steering tiller bar has
easy touch shift buttons for upshiftsand downshifts.
■ The tiller bar is easily pushed forwardto steer the tractor to the left andpulled backwards to steer the tractorto the right.
■ The more the tiller bar is moved, the tighter the turn.
■ To change machine direction,operators rotate the tiller barclockwise for forward or counter-clockwise for reverse. Neutral trans-mission position is in the middlebetween the two.
■ Low tiller bar efforts assure operatorcomfort during long shifts.
Power Turn with Differential Steering.With differential steering, large bladeloads can be smoothly maneuveredthroughout the turn. The operatormaintains precise control on slopes,around buildings, bridge abutments,trees or other obstacles.■ Differential Steering has the ability to
work in tight areas by providing a“Best in Class” tight turning radius.
■ Steering modulation is finely tunedfor precise control in all turningapplications.
■ Regardless of ground conditions,steering is consistent because poweris maintained to both tracks duringoperation.
Differential Steering System. A planetary differential turns themachine by speeding up one track andslowing the other while maintaining fullpower to both. The differential steeringsystem consists of:■ Three planetary gear sets.■ A dedicated variable-displacement
hydraulic pump.■ A bi-directional, fixed-displacement
steering motor.■ Heavy-duty steering drive gears.■ Two planetary gear sets (steering and
drive) make up the dual differential.■ A third planetary gear set, the
equalizing planetary, resides in themain case and provide a maximum4.0 mc/h speed difference betweentracks.
Operation. When moving straightahead, power flows through thetransmission pinion and bevel gear intothe dual differential, transmitting equal,uninterrupted power to each final drive.While turning, power is shifted to the outboard track speeding it up. The inboard track slows down toaccommodate a tighter turning radius.Forward ground speed remains the samethroughout the turn.

Operator StationState of the art operator’s station has reduced sound levels, lower cab vibrations and excellent visibility. The (optional) Caterpillar comfort series air suspension seat helps reduce operator fatigue. Cab and air conditioning are now offered as standard.
Cab. The cab incorporates large glass window and door panels.This allows for excellent visibility to the blade, rear and sidesof the machine. New door and window seal design allows fora fully pressurized dust free cab. Low acoustic headlinermaterial, and sound suppression foam panels reduce soundlevels to below 76 dB(A) when measured per ISO 6394:1998.
The cooling system is now incorporated into the cab structureproviding good visibility to the rear of the machine. Individualwindshield wiper controls are located in the front section ofthe headliner. The new design is spacious and comfortable topromote shift-long productivity.

Cat C500 Comfort Suspension Seat.Caterpillar C500 Comfort Series AirSuspended Seat is ergonomicallydesigned to support the operator in allsite conditions (optional).• Seat is fully adjustable for maximum
operator comfort, support andreduced operator fatigue.
• Seat cushion reduces pressure on thelower back and thighs while allowingunrestricted arm and leg movement.
• A standard lumbar adjustmentimproves lower back comfort.
Dash. The instrument panel, with easyto read analog gauges and warninglamps, keeps the operator aware of anypotential problems. All gauges andreadouts are easily visible in directsunlight. HVAC controls and vents areconveniently located on the dash toprovide climate control for the operator.Auto-shift and Auto-kickdown controlsare located within easy reach of theoperator. New footpads keep theoperator stable and comfortable duringside slope applications.
Ergonomic Work Tool Controls.Ergonomically shaped blade and rippercontrols have improved lever efforts forreduced operator fatigue. The voltageconverter provides two 12 volt powersupplies.
Electronic Monitoring System (EMS-III).EMS III provides the operator instantfeedback on machine conditions andrecords performance data to helpdiagnose problems. It has flashablememory allowing system upgrades, asnew technology and electronics becomeavailable. This system is compatiblewith Cat ET and CMS service tools.EMS includes the following gauges and readouts:■ Fuel level gauge.■ Hydraulic oil temperature gauge.■ Engine coolant temperature gauge.■ Power train oil temperature gauge.■ Engine oil pressure indicator.■ Engine speed digital readout.■ Transmission gear indicator.

The D6N case andframes are built to absorb high impactshock loads and torsional forces.Castings are strategically located withinthe frame to add additional strength.Caterpillar uses robotic weldingtechniques in the assembly of the caseand frames. impact shock loads.■ Computer-aided finite element

Roll Over Protection Systems. N-Seriescab supports have been stiffened. Stiffer ROPS supports result in lowernoise and vibration in the cab, providingthe operator increased comfort.
Rotating Bushing Track. RotatingBushing Track is designed to extendsystem life and lower costs in highlyabrasive low to moderate impactapplications.
RBT features bushings which rotatewhen in contact with the sprocket,greatly reducing bushing and sprocketwear. This design eliminates bushingturn maintenance expense and sprocketreplacement costs.

Complete Guarding. Caterpillarundercarriages are designed with fulllength guarding on top of the trackroller frame. This prevents abrasivematerials from falling down on movingparts.
Roller Frames. Roller frames aretubular, to resist bending and twisting.■ Roller frames attach to the tractor by
a pivot shaft and pinned equalizer bar.■ The recoil system is sealed and
lubricated.
UndercarriageThe Caterpillar elevated sprocket undercarriage arrangements are designed for optimizedbalance and best possible performance in fine grading to heavy dozing applications.

ServiceabilityModular design moves Caterpillar a generation ahead in simplifying repair andmaintenance.
Product Link. This option allows thecustomer or dealer to obtain machinediagnostics and location from theiroffices. Product Link provides updateson service meter hours, machinecondition, machine location as well asintegrated mapping/route planning.
Built-in Serviceability. Less servicetime means more working time. Majorcomponents are designed as modulesand most can be removed withoutdisturbing or removing othercomponents.
Diagnostic Connector. Diagnosticconnector allows Caterpillar dealers toquickly troubleshoot the D6N or accessstored data with the use of ElectronicTechnician (Cat ET).
Ecology Drains. Ecology drains providean environmentally safer method todrain fluids. They are included on theradiator, hydraulic tank and majorpower train components.
Modular Cooling System. Individualradiator core modules are easilyserviced without major componentremoval.
Easy Engine Maintenance. Many partscan be rebuilt and are available asremanufactured components.■ Parent-metal block can be rebored
twice and dry-sleeved.■ Connecting rods can be removed
through cylinder tops.■ Camshaft followers and push rods

Electronic Monitoring System.The D6N features a more flexiblemonitoring system that is easilyupgraded by flashing software ratherthan replacing the module, reducingparts cost. As technology changes andnew electronics and software becomeavailable, this upgraded monitoringsystem will allow the machine to beeasily updated.

Variable Pitch Power Angle and TiltBlade (VPAT). The VPAT blade gives the operator the ability to hydraulicallyadjust the blade lift, angle and tilt fromthe operator’s station.■ Manually adjustable blade pitch for
optimum performance.■ Top corners of the blade are clipped
for better operator viewing area. (XL arrangement only).
■ C-Frame is solidly pinned to the mainframe for good blade control andeliminates blade motion due to trackoscillation or side forces.
■ C-Frame has been moved closer to the front of the machine to improvefine grading and blade control.
■ C-Frame to tractor joint is sealed and lubricated with remote lines for extended service life and quietoperation.

Sound
■ The operator sound level measuredaccording to the procedures specifiedin ISO 6394:1998 is 76 dB(A), for cab offered by Caterpillar, when properly installed andmaintained and tested with the doors and windows closed.
■ Hearing protection may be neededwhen operating with an open operatorstation and cab (when not properlymaintained or doors/windows open)for extended periods or in noisyenvironment.
