WT 5.1 Complex Networks and Massive Data Analysis
Laboratory
The main purpose of this laboratory (CNMDAL) is to provide advanced and powerful computing
resources for complex analyses, simulation and modelling research projects performed in
ENGINE, also with cooperation with other specialized ENGINE laboratories. In this sense the
laboratory will play a central role for performing high performance computing in the area of
complex networks and massive data analysis. The computational power offered by this laboratory
will enable to perform more complex analyses that are computationally complex and/or require
massive storage. The idea is that the computational power offered by this lab will be of two kinds:
(I) general purpose nodes that run a scientific-enabled version of Linux operating system, called
computational nodes and (II) specialized nodes that can be configured to run very specific
software, called utility servers. In the former case the nodes will form a computing cluster in which
it will be possible to run very computationally demanding tasks in scientific languages such as R,
Matlab or python. The specialized nodes will be easy to reconfigure to install any kind of
application that is needed by researchers. This approach will support and motivate researchers to
build applications that are able to benefit from the cluster environment, since they will gain access
to higher computing power. On the other hand, some applications do not allow to be installed in
such an environment (e.g. because of different OS requirements), this is why CNMDA still gives
the chance to install and run the software using the other kind of nodes. Both options will be
supported by fast networking and dedicated storage, as well as both will support virtualization.
The main applications of the CNMDAL are complex networks analysis and massive data analysis,
and the scientific methods that will support these two goals are (but not limited to):
graph analysis,
machine learning,
data mining,
statistics,
natural language processing.
As previously mentioned, the laboratory consists of three main parts: computational nodes, utility
servers and storage, networking.
The specification of contract basic terms and equipment is provided in the following Appendices:
Appendix 2 Data storage system – specification – Task 1 (in English)
Appendix 3 Utility servers – specification – Task 2 (in English)

WT 5.2 Upgrade of Distributed Computing and Data Mining
Laboratory
The main goal of WT 5.2 is to upgrade the Distributed Computing and Data Mining Laboratory,
which is to be a base for the works focused on designing efficient computer systems. Designed
computer systems are to be dedicated to the database systems and data warehouses, decision
support and data mining systems.
Mentioned IT systems activity have a characteristics that should be reflected in the considered
upgrade of laboratory. Additional terms are that forced by task of designing, tuning and testing of
structures and algorithms for distributed computing and data mining.
After analysis was decided that laboratory upgrade will be a new system, which can interoperate
with existing elements. Because of the requirements have been formulated following assumptions
for the system:
should contain several autonomic, physical compute units,
should give opportunities for multiplication of compute environments via virtualization,
should contain specialized parallel vector computing units,
should contain effective storage system, which can deliver storage for physical and virtual
machines,
storage should be easily switchable between units on the fly,
all elements must be connected with high throughput network structure,
used network should have universal characteristics to carry communication protocols as
well as raw data exchange
whole system must be highly configurable, configuration should be possible via minimal
number of tool interfaces,
should give possibilities for continuous monitoring, statistics acquisition and power control
should be compact and power efficient
According to formulated requirements and allocated budget it was decided that the best solution it
seems to be an integrated solution of class called “converged infrastructure”.
Description of postulated IT infrastructure
As described in above whole designed new IT structure was pointed as “converged
infrastructure”. After reviewing of existing solutions various suppliers was formulated set of
desired, detailed properties for structure. The criteria of formulating were: fulfilment of general
assumptions, feasibility, getting possibly best solution within outlined budget, precision.
The result of work is description of structure named as modular server consisting of:
chassis with dedicated control modules,
2x dedicated converged switch
management system
9x autonomic processing units – compute nodes
2x specialized parallel computing node
dedicated software for chassis and storage management
dedicated software supporting management and virtualization

WT 5.3. Upgrade of Teleinformatics and Computer Network
Laboratory
The laboratory upgrade is devoted to make a wide range of simulation experiments
focused on the content oriented networking approaches as well as to verify optimization
models and algorithms proposed for various tasks related to network design problems. The
main research tool will be OPNET Modeler equipped with additional modules, e.g. MPLS,
Flow Analysis, etc. Currently, OPNET provides a free licence of their software for research
purposes in University Program. However, since OPNET maintenance for University Program
is not free, we would like to purchase the OPNET Maintenance for University Program for
two consecutive years.
Under Polish law on public procurement, purchasing support services for software OPNET is
a complicated task. According to the law, scientific public entity, like Wroclaw University
of Technology, is obliged to carry out the tender, during which the product and the
supplier will be chosen. Purchase in a procedure without a tender is possible only when
there is on the market only one product/service meeting the requirements of the customer
and only one possible supplier/service contractor. In the case of the simulation software
on the market there are a number of products with similar functionalities (packages
OMNET, NS, etc.). Interpretation issued by the Office of the Public Procurement of
Wroclaw University of Technology said that in such a situation it is necessary to call for
tender and selection of both software and service providers must be done on the basis of
the results of the tender. In such a situation, it could happen that in the result of the
tender we would be forced to purchase a product different than OPNET Modeler and
support services for this another product purchased.
In April 2014 the change of the Law on Public Procurement came into effect. Current
regulations allow the simpler purchase procedure for products and services dedicated
solely for the research, experiment and scientific purpose, which do not serve a purpose of
serial production aiming to achieve commercial viability nor to cover the cost of research
or development. In addition, there are further simplifications the procedure in the case
when the purchase price is less than EUR 30 000. Therefore, we decided to purchase such
the number of licenses to be able to use the simplified procedure of purchasing.
The simplified procedure is described in an internal Wroclaw University of Technology
document as ZW 35/2014 and requires the following actions:
1. The applicant shall establish substantive justification for the purchase and selection
of a particular contractor. For every purchase applicant must attach a statement
that the purchase will be used solely for the purpose of research, experiment, study
or development, which do not serve a purpose of serial production aiming to achieve
commercial viability nor to cover the cost of research or development, and indicate
the project and the purpose of making the purchase.
- 21 -
2. The applicant shall obtain the opinion of the Public Procurement Coordinator (in
terms of value of goods)
3. The applicant shall obtain approval of the funds administer (in this case the project
manager and faculty Dean)
4. If the value of the contract exceeds 20 000 PLN including taxes (4 733 EUR, including
taxes) it is absolutely required to sign up written agreement in accordance with the
procedure adopted for use in Wroclaw University of Technology.
We have applied for the 6 sets of license and maintenance services. From the producer of
the OPNET software, Riverbed Technology corporation, we have received an offer to grant
free licenses and paid support service (Appendix 4 – Riverbed Quote for the license and
maintenance services (WorkTask 5.3)), and the statement that Riverbed is the only vendor
of OPNET Modeller software and the only maintenance service contractor under the
"OPNET University Program" (Appendix 5 - Riverbed statement (WorkTask 5.3)).
