As officers initiated sur-veillance of the residence inpreparation to execute a searchwarrant, a 31-year-old womandrove away from the residenceshortly after 4 p.m., Hart said. Atraffic stop of her vehicle near94th Street and Lyndale Avenueresulted in her arrest for drivingafter suspension and withoutinsurance, Hart explained. CURRENTRequiring CPR instruction can save lives

Why are Jamie LaLonde,Natasha Fleischman and DaleWakasugi supporting a bill thatwould require Minnesota’s pub-lic schools to teach cardiopul-monary resuscitation? For thebest possible reasons: It savedtheir lives.

Both the Minnesota Houseand Senate are considering billsthat would require all MinnesotaPublic Schools to teach CPR tostudents grades 7-12. Chiefauthors Sen. Dan Hall and Rep.Mary Holberg have bi-partisansupport. In recent testimony, aMinnesota School BoardsAssociation representativeexpressed reasonable concernsabout adding a new mandatewhen budgets are challenged.

However, what’s a higher pri-ority, than teaching young peoplehow to save lives? Testimony sug-gested that about half ofMinnesota’s school districts do,and half don’t teach CPR. So Ihope the bill passes.

Twenty-year-old JamieLaLonde of Bloomington testi-fied that she was working at theMall of America when “I had asudden cardiac arrest … I was 18years old. I’m helping theAmerican Heart Associationwith this bill because the only

reason I’m alive today is becausesomeone that was trained in CPRmade it to the scene within fiveminutes.”

“Although I’m very lucky Istill can’t help but think thatnone of the 16-20 year oldsaround me that were workingwith me knew to start CPR.Sudden Cardiac Arrest can hap-pen to anyone, even young peo-ple, and I think it’s important weprepare people as best we can sothat if they ever do get thechance to save a life they can,”she said. LaLonde is attendingschool at Inver Hills CommunityCollege to become a paramedic.

Stillwater School Board mem-ber Natasha Fleischman alsorecently testified about the bill. She wrote, “CPR saved my life. Iwas a 33-year-old mother of twoin 2002 when my heart stoppedfor the first time (with no knownheart condition). I was workingat the St. Paul Public Schools. Iwas on first floor and the director

of safety and security, WillWaterkamp ran down from the4th floor to perform CPR on me.After the St. Paul FireDepartment defibrillated me fivetimes, I was taken to RegionsHospital, diagnosed with dilatedcardiomyopathy and received animplantable defibrillator (ICD).”

She continued, “I have workedwith the AHA and the Go Redcampaign, as well asWomenHeart: the NationalCoalition of Women with HeartDisease and the Sudden CardiacArrest Association to buildknowledge and skills that savelives…. When someone sufferssudden cardiac arrest, which isoften the case when a high schoolathlete collapses on the field, every minute counts. This legis-lation is meant to have everyhigh school student learn CPRbefore graduating and have theability to save the lives of fami-ly members or friends.”

“In Stillwater, we alreadyteach CPR in our requiredhealth classes. When I conduct-ed a study for the AHA usingthe CPR anytime kit, we want-ed to compare two schools, onethat taught traditional CPR andone that only had a 30-minutecourse with the anytime kit. We

taught kids to do CPR in 30 min-utes. And the preliminary datashowed that their compressionswere more consistently effectivethan those of students in a 4-hour traditional CPR class.Pretty impressive what can beaccomplished!” Fleischmansaid.

Finally, Dale Wakasugi said,“Since my first arrest inDecember 2007, I have made acommitment to myself to helpothers by ‘paying it forward’.To help place as many AEDs inas many public places as possi-ble and to help raise awarenessof the importance of knowingCPR and how to use an AED… Iwant to help high school stu-dents learn CPR and how to usean AED, since my key rescuerwas a high school student whojust learned CPR and how touse an AED in health classthree weeks prior to my event.”

It’s time for us to embrace social mediaWhen it comes to social

media there are two differentJared Huizengas.

First, there’s Jared the indi-vidual who has embraced socialmedia as his second-favoriteform of communication (behindonly text messaging). If he can’tsend you a text message or writeon your wall, he probably does-n’t want to talk to you badlyenough to call.

Second, there’s Jared thenewspaper guy, who eschewsnew forms of communication –particularly those that limit hislongwinded nature. If he is lim-

ited in any way, be it a characterlimit or space, he’s just going tocall you so he can continue toramble.

In recent months, there’sbeen great discussion aroundthe newsroom as to how we canembrace social media as a newtool and utilize it so it helps us aswell as our readers.

Some editors have startedFacebook pages for their edi-tions, while others have migrat-ed to Twitter.

I fall into the latter group.Although, truth be told, it isn’tall that new.

Back in 2009, we experiment-ed with producing daily news-casts. These newscasts lastedanywhere from 2 to 10 minutesand included news from our cov-erage areas and neighboringcities. Some editors naturallytook to being on screen. Others –myself included – showed thatno matter what our moms said,

we have faces made for radioand voices made for print.

During the dark days ofnewscasts, I started a Twitteraccount and used it to Tweetlinks to our daily newscasts. Itdidn’t help drive up my “rat-ings” much.

Once the newscast experi-ment was discontinued, I put itaway in the back of my mind.Along with that memory wentthe Twitter account.

That is until recently when Idecided to start using it again

Friends, co-workersremember Andy HamreHamre was ECM-SunPrinting employee

Andrew Hamre is being rememberedthis week as a man who loved fishing, hisfamily and his friends.

Hamre, 49, passed away Tuesday, Feb.28, while at work at the ECM-Sun Printingfacility in Hudson, Wis., from a massiveheart attack.

He leaves behind a wife, two sons, many friends and his co-workers – all whowill miss him very much.

During an afternoon break, Andy suf-fered a heart attack. Coworkers attemptedCPR and called emergency crews, but hedied a short time later.

“As always, our teams pulled togetherbut this time in an attempt to save Andy’slife,” plant employee Maria Beaupre said.“Despite all our efforts, Andy passed away.”

His friends and family quickly men-tion “fishing” when asked what he likeddoing the most in his free time. Andy wasan avid fishermen, and had won severaltrophies for his catches.

Annette said that Andy loved the NewRichmond area for its great fishing, withMary Park Lake being a favorite spot.

“They’d catch bass, crappies, perchand sunnies there all the time,” Annettesaid. His main fishing buddy was son,Josh, age 14.

“They’d compete against each other intheir own bass tournaments,” Annettesaid. Last year, Josh won the contests. “Hekicked his dad’s butt.”

His co-workers at Sun Printing alsoknew how much he loved to fish. He andhis son fished as often as they could, one

co-worker remembered. He also lovedsports, and supported his son who playedin a local baseball league every season.

“Andy was a dedicated, hard-workingand reliable employee who would stay tothe end when things went wrong. Whenthings got tough, Andy got tougher. Hewill be missed by many, as will his singingthroughout the plant each afternoon oncethe deadlines had been met,” CodyGriffin, print plant manager, said.

Annette said Andy enjoyed his workand his co-workers at Sun Printing, where he’d been employed for five years. The work team was like family, she said. There would be occasional disagree-ments, “but at the end of the day, it was allgood,” she said.

Andy grew up in northwestMinneapolis, and attended Edison HighSchool. He worked in shipping and receiv-ing, and he and Annette also operated ahome daycare business there.

They moved to Wisconsin after decid-ing it was time to get out of the city, andtook the family to New Richmond. Theireldest son, Jonathan, 21, is a college stu-dent in Beloit, Wis.

Annette Hamre said she was gratefulfor the friendship and support she hasreceived from Andy’s co-workers andfriends. “I just want to thank everyone fortheir help and for their prayers,” she said.

when I saw some of my coworkers havingsuccess with it.

Obviously I can’t properly tell a storyin 140 characters or less. In fact, there’svirtually no chance that I can say “goodmorning” with those limitations.

But what I can do by using it is get youheadlines and let you know when there’ssomething going on, when there’s break-ing news or I can just reach out for opin-ions from others. In turn, you can reachout to me without having to call or email.

I try to keep the account as active aspossible and my coworkers do as well. Werespond to questions when we can and wepose questions when they need to be

asked.Recently I noticed other media outlets

following some of the Sun Newspaperaccounts. These accounts don’t actuallytweet anything or interact with anyone, they just seem to be there trolling forinformation and using the stories andinformation tweeted by others as thebasis for their own stories.

This is something we will not do – wewant this to be another tool for us to getthe news to you and hear back from you.

Bootcamp, becoming aMarine is not dehumanizing, but something to be proud ofTo the editor:

From a wife and mother of a marine: Thank you for running the articles on the

Marine Corps. It showed what it takes to becomeone of the few, the proud. It has the longest basictraining of all the armed forces (13 weeks vs. 6). Myson left the Twin Cities as a boy — 13 weeks later hewas a man. He had been yelled at but it did not dehu-manize him — it strengthened him. He learnedfrom his [drill instructors] to be respectful, respon-sible, disciplined, to be a team player, self-reliant, tobe physically fit, that all people are created equal. These values of love of God, Country and the Corpsare with a Marine forever.

Let us not forget Marines not only are soldiersbut they protect our embassies, have helped in evac-uations of civilians and diplomats, offer humanitar-ian assistance to people not only of America but ofthe world.

If you are not sure what it is or what it takes tobe a Marine — ask one.

Once a Marine — always a Marine — a title thatis earned, not given, and a title that is theirs forever.

LETTERS TO THE EDITORIf you thought all we did was news, you’re mistakenOur website,Minnlocal.com, has avariety of blogs to bringyou another take on life

If you were to be so curious as toclick on the Opinion tab on our web-site, minnlocal.com, you might besurprised at what you find there:blogs.

Yes, that’s right, we blog. (Is that averb? Should it be? The questions aneditor sometimes asks of himselfmay be of no consequence to folksoutside the newsroom, but that one’sbeen perplexing me for a while. Letme know your thoughts.)

Excuse me while I recover myselfand get back to the point.

Ah, yes, blogging. The long and sometimes short of

it is there is often a lack of space inour print edition for the kinds ofwriting we’d like to share with you.Luckily, the Internet is a rather bigplace and can handle the weight ofmultiple writers writing on numer-ous subjects.

At the moment, I’d like to high-

light blogs that may be of interest toyou, our cherished readers:

Sun Staff SpeaksThis is where we often stash our

columns after (or before) they’vebeen printed. You’ll find posts dis-cussing topics from being single onValentine’s Day to the quandaries anavid sports fan finds himself in whenthere are no professional sports ofinterest being played. It’s a bit of acatchall for our staff to say a fewwords you might want to hear.

The Wahl Street JournalOur senior managing editor, Paul

Wahl, has a unique way of looking atthe world. No, that’s not a euphe-mism. After nearly 30 years in thenews game, he’s got a handle on howthings work in the business and inlife in general. A true reporter’s per-spective on current events, pastevents and the day-to-day.

Peggy’s JournalWorking in journalism presents

an interesting problem:Remembering everything that hashappened over the years can bedaunting. Executive Editor PeggyBakken has acquired the memorialtrait in spades. Touching on every-thing from Minnesota history to rockconcerts, Peggy provides context andinsights along the way.

Scene and HeardCommunity Editor Jared

Huizenga is a media addict.Thinking about seeing a new movie? He can tell you the production valueand give an honest review. Want tocheck out an album? He probablyknows the personal lives of the musi-cians better than they do themselves.

Students, parents shouldurge legislative support

Minnesota high school juniors andseniors who meet established standardsare fortunate to be able to take collegeclasses and to have the tuition and bookspaid for by the state.

A question before the MinnesotaLegislature is whether to allow qualifiedninth and tenth graders to take collegeclasses as well. The program is calledPost Secondary Enrollment Options(PSEO) and thousands of Minnesota stu-dents are using it. By taking dual-enroll-ment courses they are receiving highschool and college credits.

The Minnesota Legislature estab-lished the PSEO program in 1985 to givestudents an opportunity to enhance theeducation they receive at their highschools, alternative area learning cen-ters, charter schools or home schools. The program gives students capable ofdoing college-level work the opportunityto earn postsecondary credits whilecompleting high school graduationrequirements.

Because some ninth and tenthgraders have demonstrated through test-ing they have the maturity and ability todo college-level work, the legislatureshould pass the bill, this session.

Critics say freshmen and sophomoresare not ready, and taking college classesso soon interferes with their regularcourse of study and diminishes theirhigh school experience. Freshmen andsophomores, however, already are tak-ing Advanced Placement courses, just asare juniors and seniors.

Results of standardized reading andmathematics testing show which stu-dents are ready to take a college class, nomatter what their year in school.Proponents of early college study sayfreshmen and sophomores could start bytaking just one college class. Eligibilityand acceptance would be determinednot by the host high school administra-

tors but by the college and university. Parents should welcome the PSEO

program, because they do not have topay for the college tuition and books, since their students are enrolled in theK-12 program.

Students learn early about the rigorsof college instruction and that enablesthem to plan specifically their collegecareer path. In addition, they realizeearly the importance of studying basichigh school subjects so they will nothave to take costly remedial college-entrance classes.

Several national studies found thatstudents who participate in dual(school/college) credit programs aremore likely to graduate from highschool, to enroll in college, to start afour-year college and to stay in collegefor two years.

A study by the Minnesota Center forSchool Change shows there is a majorincrease in Minnesota high school stu-dents taking college courses. Its authorsrecommend that since ninth and 10graders may take Advanced Placementand Concurrent Enrollment courses, these students should be allowed to takePSEO courses on a limited basis.Support for allowing qualified highschool freshmen and sophomores takecollege-level classes is growing, and hasbipartisan support in the Legislature.

Parents and particularly studentsshould contact their legislators and urgethat the bill be passed.

Richfield’s ‘Biggest Loser’ contestant a mover and shaker O’Neal Hampton startsfoundation and ‘fitnessresort’ in HawaiiBY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS

Since losing nearly 200 pounds threeyears ago for reality show “The BiggestLoser,” Richfield resident O’NealHampton has taken advantage of hisnewfound mobility.

Getting through the work day andgetting home was all he could manageas a 420-pounder, but now he the 54-year-old is making the rounds, speakingto Fortune 500 companies and auditori-ums filled with doctors, founding fit-ness retreats, and starting his ownfoundation.

With a stated aim to pay forward theblessing of his renewed life, O’Neal, who has stabilized his weight at 243with boxing workouts and weight lift-ing, is showing no signs of slowing, even as he rehabilitates from two kneesurgeries in two years.

Although the organization has beenactive for sometime, the former station

manager at an Edina post office willofficially launch the Bloomington-based O’Neal Hampton WellnessFoundation March 17-18 at the BodyMind Life Expo, taking place at theMinneapolis Convention Center.

The foundation’s mission is to pro-

mote physical activity by paying athlet-ics fees for underprivileged childrenand their families, while bringing innutritionists to help those familiesachieve a healthy diet, Hampton said.

While that aim continues,Hampton’s newest endeavor is the sec-

ond iteration of what seems an oxy-moron: a fitness resort, where peoplewill use their vacation time to endure 6-8 hours of exercise a day while adher-ing to strict diets.

And they will cross the Pacific to doso, as headbands replace leis in Oahu,Hawaii, at Hamilton’s U 1st Fitness, which he is establishing with the helpof a former “Biggest Loser” productionassistant and his daughter, SunShine, who competed on “Biggest Loser” alongwith her father.

U 1st Fitness is housed at Turtle BayResort on the island’s north shore. Theother U 1st Fitness location has been upand running for a year in Houston.

The new location, aside from themore vacation-like locale, will mirrorthe Houston program, catering to peo-ple of diverse fitness levels, from 400-pounders to those who simply want tofirm up.

Preliminary market researchshowed strong demand for the service, garnering “just a huge response,”Hampton said. But he admits, it is notcheap. Although prices are yet to be

finalized, a trip to the fitness resortwould cost about as much as anyHawaiian vacation.

This is the reason for the WellnessFoundation, Hampton said, and thereason he collects corporate donationson the speaking circuit, from which hemakes nothing himself. A healthylifestyle can cost money, and “every-body deserves the right to be healthy,”Hampton said by phone from Hawaiilast week, where he was setting up hisfitness resort.

Hampton has spread his message

across the country, but the focus of theWellness Foundation begins at home. “Iwant to start in my own back yard,”Hampton said. “I want to helpMinnesota first.”

Life before — and after — “Loser”

Hampton says his motivationalspeaking actually has very little to dowith weight-loss, per se. Instead, hespeaks on the issues everyone faceslike finances, stress, health and mar-riage.

“Four-hundred-and-twenty poundsis a product of something else going onin your life,” said Hampton, recountinghis “Biggest Loser” experience and hisrealization, as he shed the pounds, that

he wasn’t the person he projected to theworld.

He calls his former self a “clown.” “I was smiling. I was happy and jubi-

lant. That was a façade,” he said. “At420 pounds I was no where near ashappy as where I am now. I didn’t thinkI had a problem at 420 pounds. Youalways find a way to get around things, and that’s what I was doing.”

But getting around was the problem.“It was all I could do to get up and go towork and come back home,” Hamptonsaid.

Now, his wife, Sarah, is doing all shecan to keep pace. “It’s like a fulltime jobfor me to kind of keep up with O’Neal,”she said by phone while in Hawaii withher husband, as they celebrated their28th wedding anniversary in addition

to taking care of the fitness resort busi-ness.

The anniversaries are sweeter now.It used to be, when they went to themovies, Sarah would drop her husbandoff at the theatre’s entrance beforegoing off to park. In those days O’Neal,an avid Twins fan, would stay awayfrom the ballpark altogether. “Hecouldn’t fit in the seat,” his wife said.

Now they have season tickets, andthe first game O’Neal attended afterlosing the weight, SunShine threw outthe first pitch. “It’s just things like thatthat have really changed our lives, that’s amazing,” Sarah raved. “It’s awonderful life.”

For the Hamptons, that’s life since“Loser,” and O’Neal keeps moving.

“My dance card is filled,” he said.

Hovila suffered a concussion duringthat Rosemount victory last season.Instead of spending this winter on a bas-ketball court at an outstate school,Hovila is studying applied economics atthe University of Minnesota. And he’sreaching out to those who are travelingthe same path he has since fourth grade, students affected by concussions.

Hovila is the co-founder ofConnections4Concussions, a supportgroup for students who are coping withthe effects of a concussion or mild trau-matic brain injury. At 19, Hovila is anelder statesman for the newly formedsupport group, which held its firstmeeting last week at Penn Lake Libraryin Bloomington.

“It’s good to be with people whoknow the same struggles, and don’tjudge you for it,” he said. Hovila wantsstudents from across the Twin Citiesand beyond to know that they’re not theonly one suffering from the lingeringeffects of a concussion, a feeling heknows well in the years since his firstconcussion, suffered while playing foot-ball as a fourth-grader.

What Hovila and his family didn’tknow all those years ago was that hisfirst concussion would be just one ofmany. He suffered two concussionswithin a one-month period during thatfourth-grade football season. The firstwasn’t significant, according to Hovila, but the second one turned out to be lifechanging, even though it wasn’t as hardof a hit. “The effects of it were moreserious because of the first hit,” hesaid.

The second concussion had lastingeffects. He had bouts with fatigue andmemory loss, struggled in school, became short-tempered and was proneto outbursts, all uncharacteristic forhim prior to fourth grade, he explained.

Hovila’s life returned to normal infifth grade, but concussions became apart of his life as a basketball player, starting with a concussion in sixth

grade. Headaches following that con-cussion occasionally forced Hovila togo home early from school.

After each concussion Hovila wouldbe diagnosed by a doctor and cleared toresume activity before returning tobasketball. “We did everything we weresupposed to at the time,” he said. But byhis sophomore year in high school thefamily decided that the recurring cycleshould end. Hovila and his parentagreed that the next concussion wouldbe his last as a basketball player.

Hovila was 90 seconds from extend-ing his basketball career beyond theopening game of the conference sched-ule. An elbow to the head during ascrum for a rebound off of a missedfree throw was the final blow, althoughHovila didn’t know it at the time. Heremembers the sharp pain he felt shootup the right side of his skull, calling it“one of the worst pains I had felt.” Butit didn’t cause an immediate headacheor dizziness. “I finished the game.”

It wasn’t until more than 90 minutesafter the game that Hovila started toexperience concussion symptoms. “Icouldn’t even get off the couch bymyself,” he said.

Beyond basketball“I’m still dealing with a lot of the

symptoms,” Hovila said. Years of experience have helped

Hovila learn how to manage and copewith the effects of his concussions, buthe grew up without a peer group toshare his experiences with. Classmatessuffered concussions, too, but none ofthem experienced the recurring effectsof them as Hovila did.

Hovila has had an outlet for support, however, in the Brain InjuryAssociation of Minnesota. Throughtheir programs to help families affectedby brain injuries Hovila met KaylaMeyer of New Prague, who had suf-fered a concussion in December 2009.While attending a Minnesota Wildgame last October as guests of theBrain Injury Association, Hovila andMeyer discussed starting a peer sup-

port group. The idea was suggested injest, but the duo realized they could ful-fill a need by organizing the group, andproceeded to do so.

Connections4Concussions is intend-ed to provide youth and young adultswho have suffered concussions andmild traumatic brain injuries withopportunities to learn from each other, and find encouragement and support.Their group will also provide care-givers, family members and friendsopportunities to discuss their chal-

lenges in a separate setting. The inaugural meeting attracted 10

students, with the Hovila and Meyerfamilies discussing their experiencesand the need for the support group. Thegroup will meet at 6 p.m. on the fourthTuesday of each month at Penn LakeLibrary, 8800 Penn Ave. S.

The March 27 meeting will includetwo speakers from the Brain InjuryAssociation.

Information about the group is avail-able online at go.to/c4c.

Friday, March 2, two days afterBloomington Police asked for the public’shelp in solving a string of similar inci-dents along Normandale Boulevard.

He was released from the HennepinCounty Jail over the weekend after post-ing bond, and had not been charged inHennepin County District Court as ofMonday, March 5, according to theHennepin County Attorney’s Office.

He was arrested Sunday, March 4, bythe St. Croix Falls Police Departmentafter a report of a black SUV driving reck-lessly at approximately 5:20 p.m.

The caller identified Parks as the sus-pect, according to St. Croix Falls Police. As an officer was responding to the call, police received a second call of a blackSUV speeding near the intersection oftwo highways, nearly hitting the report-ing party.

An officer identified the suspect vehi-cle, traveling at speeds estimated inexcess of 70 mph, and attempted to stopthe driver. Following a 1.5-mile pursuitthe SUV pulled over. Parks did not complywith an order to exit his vehicle and hadto be forcibly removed, resulting in a cutabove his left eye, according to St. CroixFalls Police.

Parks was arrested for reckless driv-ing, fleeing an officer, resisting arrest and

driving while impaired. Test results of ablood sample taken following the arrestwere not available as of Monday, St. CroixFalls Police noted.

Last week’s Bloomington incident thatinjured Stacke was the sixth incidentreported in recent weeks, and the firstthat resulted in an injury. Police have evi-

dence that Parks was in the vicinity dur-ing some of the incidents, according toHart. “We can’t elaborate as to what thatevidence is at this point,” he said. “We’restill doing a lot of investigative followup.”

Parks was arrested at his Bloomingtonresidence, where a search warrant was

executed. The search turned up evidencethat would point to Parks as the personresponsible for the incidents, Hart said.“Whether or not we can charge him on allof them is yet to be determined,” headded.

Hart characterized Parks as “nostranger to law enforcement in the TwinCities area,” noting Bloomington hasarrested him previously for incidentssuch as vandalism and criminal damageto property.

Stacke, a National Guard sergeant, andStaff Sgt. Jeremy Gettel of Bloomingtonwere driving southbound on NormandaleBoulevard at approximately 7:15 p.m.when a metal vise struck the windshieldof their vehicle, hitting Stacke in the faceand knocking him unconscious, accord-ing to Gettel. Gettel heard a loud explo-sion from the impact, saw Stacke wasunconscious and grabbed the wheel ofthe vehicle. Gettel was able to put the carin neutral and engage the parking brake, brining the car to a halt, he said.

Following surgery and hospitalization,Stacke returned home last week. “He’sdoing a lot better than I’d be doing,”Gettel said.

The Bloomington Crime PreventionAssociation had offered a $1,500 rewardfor information leading to an arrest andconviction following the Feb. 27 incident.

Police are continuing to seek informa-tion in the investigation. Anyone withinformation is asked to BloomingtonPolice at 952-563-4900.

Kennedy ’87 state champions reunite at this year’s hockey tourneyMinnesota’s most popular high

school sports tournament gets under-way this week at Xcel Energy Center inSt. Paul.

Over 115,000 fans are expected topack Xcel for four days of state ClassAA and A boys hockey tournamentcompetition. Last winter, 116,662 spec-tators were on hand to witness MarchMadness on the ice.

The State AA tourney bracket fea-tures one of the best-balanced and tal-ented fields in recent years. Top seedsare Duluth East (1), Maple Grove (2),Eagan (3) and Edina (4).

State AA unseeded squads areBenilde-St. Margaret’s, LakevilleSouth, Moorhead and Hill-Murray.High-scoring BSM is my long shotselection to win the state AA champi-onship.

BSM should have a collective chip onits shoulder after not receiving a tour-nament seed. Plus, the Red Knightshave extra motivation while trying towin a state title for injured teammateJack Jablonski.

In Class A, Hermantown and St.

Thomas Academy are top seeds fol-lowed by Breck and Thief River Falls.Other state A tourney entrants areLittle Falls, Duluth Marshall,Rochester Lourdes and New Ulm.

Again, I am picking a private schoolto win a state championship in thisclass. Breck’s past tournament experi-ence should pay dividends this season.

It should be an interesting four daysof high school hockey.

Kennedy reunionBloomington Kennedy High School’s

1987 state boys hockey championshipteam will hold a 25-year reunion duringthis year’s tournament.

The ’87 Eagles compiled a 25-1 recordwhile winning the school’s only stateboys hockey title.

All 20 players from that team arereturning including a foreign exchangestudent from Finland, Marko Kreus, and a decorated Air Force Pilot,Lieutenant Colonel Kent Landreth.

The Eagle team is getting togetherwith family and friends Friday, March9, at Poor Richards Common House inBloomington. This event starts at 7p.m. and is open to anybody who wish-es to attend.

Then on Saturday, March 10,Kennedy’s 1987 state champions willattend championship-round games atXcel Energy Center. A suite and ticketsare being provided by TCF Bank.

“I originally approached TCF aboutpossibly renting a suite, but when I toldthem what it was for, they reallystepped up and offered to host the eventfor us,” said former ’87 Kennedy cap-tain Joe Decker. “They’ve been great towork with, and it’s really been morethan I could have hoped for.”

Gilbert is back homeFormer Bloomington Jefferson all-

state defenseman Tom Gilbert is mak-

ing hockey news on the local front aftergetting traded from Edmonton to theWild Feb. 27.

Gilbert, 29, came to the MinnesotaNHL team from the Oilers in a trade forWild defenseman Nick Schultz. TheWild is hoping that Gilbert can gener-ate offense from his defensive positionand provided leadership and durabilityfor the defensive corps.

Gilbert scored 33 goals and collected158 points in 384 games for Edmontonsince 2004. The 6-foot-3, 210-pounddefenseman displayed durability dur-ing his NHL career missing only threegames in four seasons.

Gilbert graduated from Jefferson in2001 before enrolling at the Universityof Wisconsin on a hockey scholarship. He scored the winning goal for theBadgers in the 2006 NCAA title game.

I have been fortunate to chronicleGilbert’s hockey success over theyears. Gilbert has been a leader on andoff the ice for the Jaguars, Badgers andOilers. He should provide leadershipand reliable defensive play for the Wildas well.
