D.2.1. REPORT ON WEBINARS ORGANIZED

1 INTRODUCTION

In the “Task 2.1 Webinars”, included in WP2 ‘Enablers Promotion’ of IMPACT DoW, we described

a series of webinars planned in order to raise awareness directly within developers’ and

entrepreneurs’ communities, universities and other networks reached by partners and project

stakeholders about FIWARE technologies and all the services and products behind it.

So far we have designed six webinars to complement the Hackathons, two were presented prior

to each Open Call.

ISDI, the leader organizer, is responsible for content development and logistics regarding the

webinar organization, with the idea to use our own e-learning platform which has the technical

requirements for the webinars´ organization.

We changed our previous idea, instead of creating a regular webinar where we would be inviting

a specific group of attendees to a temporary webinar session, this time we have recorded the

training capsules and which were available on IMPACT Youtube channel and were shared via

website, emailing and social media within our developers’ and entrepreneurs’ community.

In the following sections we explain the webinars´ final production, dissemination and

awareness reached.

2 WEBINAR APPROACH

For the first two webinars (Webinars 1 and 2), we used a learning by doing approach, asking our

technical leader and author of the webinars, Marcelo Royán, to better understand the FIWARE

technologies and ecosystem. This approach works well, and we have received good feedback

and congratulations.

After studying the enablers, our technical leader determined that one of the main points to

better understand the FIWARE ecosystem could be gathering and simplifying the current

information into short and well-structured webinars. With that in mind we produce the first two

webinars, released on August 2014.

For the next two webinars (Webinars 3 and 4), maintaining our “learning by doing” approach we

have produced more technical and specific webinars. Since the release date of the first webinars

(August 2014) until the release of these webinars (Webinars 3 and 4, released on April 2015), we

had been in contact with FIWARE, their developers, their platform, organizing hackathons and

presenting IMPACT and FIWARE along with some main FIWARE developers and coders. All this

input has further helped to better understand FIWARE and be updated on current development

progress of the main Enablers.

For the last two webinars (webinars 5 and 6), thanks to our direct contact with FIWARE events,

hackathons, bootcamps, FIWARE evangelists all around Europe and IMPACT start-ups

developing FIWARE, and maintaining our learning by doing approach, we have produced more

specific webinars on two different but important Generic Enablers: Orion Context Broker and

IoT Agent: IDAS generic Enablers.

To summarize, IMPACT FIWARE webinar series, have grown the depth and complexity of the

content step by step until a detailed set-up of FIWARE enablers. This way we have let viewers

start from the scratch but finalized with a deep overview of what is FIWARE and how to set up

FIWARE enablers. We have started the two first webinars gathering and simplifying the former

information that was then available. We have continued with the next two webinars, going deep

on the FIWARE generic Enablers and a use case of Orion context broker. Finally we have finalized

the webinars’ series with the last two webinars, fully detailing the set-up of two generic enablers

(Orion Context Broker and IoT Agent: IDAS generic Enabler).

We organized and planned the scripts, the graphic materials and the timing, to finally create two

more training capsules about FIWARE.

Webinar 5: The goal here is to get into bigger detail and hands on with a central Enabler of the

FIWARE architecture that we have talked about a few times before: Orion Context Broker. We’ll

explain what context management is and how viewers can make use of Orion context broker

enabler in their project. Orion is one of the main enablers in the FIWARE architecture, so this

webinar will provide viewers with a wide view of the use of FIWARE and its integration in your

architecture.

Webinar 6: The goal of this webinar is to dive into the details of another central Enabler of the

FIWARE architecture: IoT Agent (IDAS), and get hands on with it. We’ll explain what the enabler is

and how viewers can make use of IoT Agents, along with Orion context broker enabler, in their

project. Internet of Things and Smart Cities are one of the main areas in FIWARE, and this Enabler

fits very well with Orion, as they complement each other perfectly. Therefore the knowledge and

integration of both can help viewers’ projects get to the next level in the area.

The idea to change the temporary webinar sessions to recorded training capsules always

available on Youtube, turned out to be a great idea, so we maintained the same to the last two

webinars. It allows everybody to watch the webinars, no matter when, and in different devices,

following our goal to spread and capitalize the strength of the mobile devices. Moreover these

webinars can be re-used, or embedded in any website, both from other FIWARE accelerators,

FIWARE Team or for the European Commission in any campaign or video material they consider.

4 WEBINAR FEEDBACK AND MAIN METRICS

In addition to these websites we have also promoted the webinars via e-mailings, social media

channels, and by mentioning them on our events (organized by IMPACT or those we have been

invited to as speakers).

Indeed the number of subscribers and total views on IMPACT’s Youtube channel is growing

step by step to the current 72 subscribers and 4.139 views. (Date: November 3rd)

In the Table 1, we have gathered the main metrics about the webinars’ series. The KPI (Key

Performance Indicators) selected are:

“Release date”,

“Youtube views”,

“Views from other sources”,

“Total views” and

“Geographical Location” of the viewers.

These metrics will grow slower than they have been so far, but also constantly, because we are

going to keep the videos uploaded on the IMPACT Website and our Youtube channel.

5 CONCLUSION

As commented on the first Webinar report, we planned to deliver the next two webinars as

training capsules, and due to our good results, we have been continue applying the same

approach.

We are pleased to see the positive feedback and that our webinars are step by step growing in

terms of views, subscriber and very well positioned on Youtube SERP (Search Online Results

Page) when entering a query related with FIWARE.
