Word From our LTG

Hello Pirate Penguins!

I have been a Key Club member for two wonderful years. I am thoroughly excited for my third and final year; I have a plethora of fresh ideas to jumpstart this new term. I have witnessed over the years how this BEE-autiful organization has not only im-pacted the world, but changed people’s perspective on life. Key Club has the ability to single-handedly bring people from all walks of life together. It is amazing to know that within such extreme diversities there is a commonality: the purpose and the in-nate desire to serve the community.I plan to create a deeper bond within the division, pump up spirit, reinvigorate clubs, have more division service projects and socials, increase the attendance at Division Council Meetings, and raise more funds for our service partners. I believe that with my determination and YOUR participation and willingness to go on with my she-nanigans, all this can be achievable. I love Key Club and I love service. I hope my love for both will transpire to Division 19 North.If I could ever be of service to you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

In El Segundo, the month of April was transition month. Both the 2011- 2012 and the 2012- 2013 boards worked together to help establish a strong foundation for this year’s term. First we had three board members (former- President Jessica Chen, current- VP Carolyn Kim, and former- treasurer Katie Tran) from both terms attend the DCM trip where they had an absolute blast!! Each mem-ber came back with some amazing ideas for leading Key Club meetings and terrific icebreakers to strengthen the spirit within El Segundo! In fact, they came back with so much enthusiasm, they were able to instantly raise the moral and spirit of the club! Now, everyone is eager to commit to some serious hours of community service. Also in the month of April, El Segundo was preparing for their fundraiser at the town’s annual Hometown Fair. The fundraiser is to consist of a hairspray booth where members would style any customer’s hair with hair spray of any awesome color! All members in El Segundo signed up for a shift and are eager to work the fair!!! The proceeds will be donated to a charitable foundation that is to be later decided by both the board and members. (We are still in the process of nominating and selecting a specific foundation to support.) The date set for the fundraiser is May 5, (yes Cinco de Mayo), and we look forward to raise a good chunk of cash!!!! Looking ahead, the pirate penguins of El Segundo are recruiting for the town’s annual beach clean-up. The event will be held at Grande Beach in El Segundo on June 2, and will start at 9am. To aid in the clean- up, not only will members be picking up trash, but they will be setting up the event, chauffeuring other garbage- cleaning volunteers, and ensuring that the event runs smoothly!!! These Key Club members will be up and read to help at the crack of 7:00 am!!! We cannot wait until May to take some more action and plan more community service events!!!

El Segundo The members of the month for the month or April were Daniel Tran and Jessica Chen. Daniel is a junior who has been in Key Club since freshman year and loves the club. He truly cares about Key Club and community service. This month Daniel could not attend DCON but made up for it with various community service activities totaling up to 22 hours in just 6 week. He succeeded in helping his community despite preparing for finals, APs, and other clubs. Also, as treasurer he made sure all the money was accounted for and made sure out money was turned in early, way before the deadline. This amazing worth ethic got Daniel appointed commissioner of clubs and organization for his senior year in ASB. Daniel will still continue to show his support Key Club throughout his senior year as well. He is a beloved Key Club officer who attends every meeting and truly interacts with the mem-bers. Jessica Chen is a senior who has been with Key Club all four years of her high school career. As president, Jessica is thorough with her work and holds short and sweet meetings that are informative and to the point so we can use out time effectively. She went to DCON for her final time this month and brought back helpful infor-mation to her home club at El Segundo High School for those who could not attend but were interested. Jessica has done an amazing job helping the new officers and showed them the guidelines and step on planning an event with her club’s fundraiser booth at the Hometown Fair. She has done a fantastic job at passing the torch to the new Presi-dent Heather O. and preparing her this month for the new term. Jessica has also still been highly active with the club despite retiring, showing her great dedication to Key Club and community service.

GardenaThis member served as the 2011-2012 president for Gardena High School's Key Club. Although his term has already ended, his good heart for community service still shows. His community service hours for April alone amounted to 20 hours. He is indeed a role model to all of us, showing us what passion for community service is all about. I believe that his great example will guide the new board to greatness this 2012-2013 term. An amazing member like him deserves a big applause! We salute you Alex Flores! Thank you and we wish you the best of luck as you journey through a new path in college.

King/Drew's Key Club member of the month of April is Ruby Garcia. She has attended every event in April and has actively participated in all of them. She completes every task given and does them without complaint.

Members Of the Month/ Photo Submissions

Westchester The outstanding student for May is Jermaine Stewart- Webb. At our community service event at Paseo del Rey Elementary he per-formed extremely well starting from 8 am to 5 pm on Saturday May 5th. It was a very hot day but that did not bring him down one bit. He worked tirelessly throughout the day always keeping himself occupied. From helping set up, to working one of the carnival games, he has displayed outstanding effort. He has displayed the essence of key club by doing as much as possible and with a smile on his face.
