The fi rst ride of the season! The fi rst ti me you throw your leg over your motorcycle aft er a long layoff , or in our case this year, the long winter! The snow not totally gone, the trail not perfect, the weather could be warmer….But it’s a ride! I had my fi rst opportunity to ride this season, the fi rst ride of the season for me. Up in Kalkaska Michigan, we needed to ride in the Enduro trail and mileage

the Family Enduro Series Arbor Day Enduro.

The trail is a mixture of private property. Last year's trail and brand new trail that has been walked in, but never has had a motorcycle on it! The crew watched as I started out on the ice covered two tracks, not being able to keep my motorcycle underneath me! Quickly we fi gured out that the new ti res, freshly mounted this winter, and never had been dropped to riding pressures. Trying to ride a motorcycle on ice with 30 pounds of air pressure in

Visions by Thomas Dunn, 2014 District 14 President

both ti res, is not necessarily anything I would recommend. Needless to say, I felt the cold hard ground several ti mes!

The fi rst ride of the season!

I could not have asked for a bett er crew. Several of the members of Twin Bay Trail Riders joined Mike Maurer and myself to mileage and fi nish marking and cleaning up the event trail.

Probably my biggest thrill was my fi rst ride of the season included past D14 President, Brian Kidner.

I have had plenty of opportunity to work with, race against and discuss district business with Mr. Kidner. But, aft er all these years, never once did I get the wonderful pleasure of just riding with Brian.

Now all of you know that Mr. Kidner and Mr. Maurer and all the Twin Bay Trail riders are bett er riders then I am… But today on my fi rst ride of the season, I felt I rode as their equal!

Looking forward to many more First Rides this season!

See ya at the Races, Thomas Dunn

2014 ICE RACER OF THE YEARStory and photos submitt ed by Jeremiah Sherman, Ice Race Chairman

Meet District 14's 2014 Ice Racer of the Year...

Johnny SchererAge 25White Lake MI

His Ride: 2006 Yamaha Banshee

How did you get into riding and racing?Back in 93 racing 1/4 midgets at 5 ti ll I was 16. Then I graduated to Auto Valley Super Sprints where I drove for JRS Racing for three years. Won multi ple heat races, and took a 5th as my best overall fi nish.

What was your fi rst-ever win in any form of motorsports?Jr Stock 1/4 midgets when I was 6 years old.

Do you remember how you felt?King of the world man!

Have any bad crashes? I hit the inside wall at 120 mph in Canada when I was 18. This track was known to be rough, and it got me and another driver early in the race.

Inside wall?Me and another guy hit the same bump in the track, our front ends banged together and sent me to the inside. It was like slow moti on and no control.

What got you into ice racing? My brother in law, Randy Cox, started at the White Lake Ice Races in 2010. Aft er that, the whole family started Ice racing. My fi rst race was the 2012 D14 State Cham-pionships, in Escanaba MI.

I believe I beat you prett y good back then....Yeah I was the rookie thoughFair enough, lol.

What's the hardest thing about Ice racing? The bump steer and fati gue in the long mains are tough. I would get out of the sprint car fati gued but ok. Aft er a day of Ice racing, I am absolutely sore and fl at out exhausted. You start losing the ability to hang to the grips, and lean properly.

Do you have any special things you do to get yourself ready for the ice season?Keep riding as much as possible, do some gym work.

Why do you race Ice race, and what is it that drives you to go so far in this sport? I love racing in general and the clubs work hard to make it aff ordable for the riders, af-fordability is important these days.

Who is your toughest competi ti on?John Sti erle, current D14 TT Champion.

How does it feel to be D14 Ice Rac-er of the Year?I was completely surprised and shocked, I don't even know what to think yet.

Shout outs and thanks? Banshee Boys Racing Family and White Lake Rac-ing and Durablue! Special thanks to Durablue for the Sway bar system.

If you could make your dream track

without limits, what kind of track would you build?High bank short track.

What do you think about when your out front alone?I always feel like they're right there, so I just keep pushing.

What's TV show are you into right now?"How It's Made" on History Channel.

What's the last movie you saw and was it any good?Hunger Games 2, Catching Fire. Awesome movie, cant wait for the next one!

What's your favorite movie of all ti me?Days of Thunder, Tom Cruise before he lost it.

If you had a day off to do anything in the world you wanted — but you couldn't race — what would you do?White water raft ing, as long as it's warm.

What are your thoughts about Ice racing becoming an X Games sport? It would be sweet. I saw the 750 Harleys online, it would great for the sport and tell more people about us. I'm sure there would be a lot more racers joining.

PORTLAND TRAIL RIDERS (Portland, MI) | April 14Story by Steve BaginskiPhotos by Speedpunksimages.com

Finally, the 2014 Season is under way! I for one was mentally ready to get back on the track but physically I was not quite prepared. The weather was supposed to be on the bad side but for those who went anyway, were treated with some wind but great conditi ons. The turnouts on the en-ti re day were on the light side with excep-ti on to the twenty fi ve Vintage signups! The track was tamed down a bit and the jumps were big and fun yet rider friendly. They do an amazing job there and hope to return soon.

The Innovati on class dropped fi rst with Chad Morehouse taking the holeshot but Colin Cook taking the lead quickly. Colin would pull a gap as I was in third trying to stay with Chad as Mike Poirier was keep-ing pace. Paul Gillett was on the move for his second year in Innovati on as he led Tim

Anderson and Tom Lee. Newcomer Ryan Baeder was a few seconds back as the lone 125cc racer. Colin would eventually pull out around a fi ve second lead as I moved

into second and would have to fi ght to stay ahead of Chad. Paul rode strong and kept the top three in sight as he had to batt le to stay ahead of Tim and Mike. Mike was riding well unti l lap three when his bike quit right at the fi nish and would end up with a DNF. Ryan would end up a lap down in seventh. Moto two was a litt le diff erent as I grabbed the holeshot with Colin and Chad all over me. I had a ton of pressure from

Colin for the fi rst three laps. Then on the back side of horsepower hill, he went to the outside to make a pass and went down

in the soft berm. I was then able to relax and take the second moto win for the over-all. Chad would briefl y move into second but could not keep up his momentum as he had popped his knee out and was rid-

ing in pain. So Chad dropped back to third for third overall. Paul held strong and rode great to fourth just missing the overall po-dium. Tim was within sight all moto long but had more of a fi ght fending off Mike as

his bike was all fixed. Tom would end up seventh for sixth with Ryan going 7-8 for seventh as Mike’s dnf in moto one landed him in eighth.

The Iron Man class was on the track with the Innovation but with their own drop. Four riders were through turn one with Ian Lee having a slight edge over Kris Gil-lett, Kevin Stone and Al Doneth. Austin Vis-ger, Rick Stone and Bill Belote were fight-ing as well, while Jeff Doneth had a wheel over Randy Stone and Brian Briggs. Ian took over the lead for a few corners until Al took over and checked out. Austin and Kevin were back and fourth as Kris was hav-ing some issues and dropped towards the back. Ian would have some crazy issue and drop to the back of the pack as well. He would tighten his bars and get back in the race but too far back to make up ground. Austin finally made his pass stick and take over second with Kevin holding down third. Rick rode a fairly lonely race in fourth with Bill riding hard to fifth. Randy recovered from a slower than normal start to take

sixth as Kris slid back to seventh. Jeff led Brian for the entire moto and then on the last lap, Brian made his move and took eighth. Moto two was a little wilder as Al took another early lead. Ian was back up to pace and was trying his best to stay with and make an eventual pass. He thought he had a slight lead in a tight left hander but did not. He ran into Al’s bike and went down hard. It would take him a while to re-mount and get going but his day was done. Austin took full advantage of the wreck and slid into second and away from the charg-ing Kris now in third. Rick rode a solid race and held down fourth once again as did Bill in fifth. I believe Kevin was also involved with or stopped to help Ian and dropped back to sixth. Brian did even better the second time out and battled all race with Jeff again, but taking seventh for seventh overall. Jeff took eighth ahead of Randy,

after his problems, but Randy’s first moto sixth put him between Bri-an and Jeff. Ian is a lot faster than his 10-DNF scores and will surely back it up at round two in a few weeks.

Transition was a little light with the top three battling for most of the

moto. Tim Anderson was out to an early lead followed by Joe Sangster on his new 250. Mark cook was back and so was Bryan Wanke, although on an unknown borrowed bike. As they cam around for lap two it was Tim with a slight lead over Joe and then a few seconds back to Mark. As Bryan came through the finish section, his bike sput-tered to a stop and his moto was done. Tim put his head down and gained a few seconds over Joe and then about the same gap to Mark in third. By the end of the race, Tim had a comfortable lead with Joe having enough of a lead to take it easy the last half lap. Mark charged to the end but ended third. For moto two the race was on from the drop of the gate minus Bryan who could not get his bike going. Tim barely got the holeshot over Joe with mark right in the

BILLY'S TIP N' INN RESTAURANT (WHITE LAKE, MI) | April 26story and photos submitted by Jeremiah Sherman, Ice Race Chairman

The 2014 Ice Racing Banquet was hosted at Billys Tip n' Inn Restaurant in White Lake, MI. 65 guests enjoyed hearty meal of chicken, bread and mostacholi followed by an informal awards ceremony. First place riders received Carhardt-type jackets with the accolades embroidered on the breast, as well as number one plates. Award plates were also given as far back as 5th place. Our division sponsors generously donated products and certificates to pass out. Ice Racer of the Year, John Scherer received a new Anti Sway Bar System courtesy of Durablue! Hoosier Racing Tire donated four tires, StreamLine Brakes donated three sets of brake and clutch levers, and Magnum Distributing out did themselves all together! We would also like to thank Pivot Works, Hotcams, Hotrods, Koldkutter Racing, Sidewinder Sprockets, Barkers Exhaust and PowerMadd. We had some discussion on rule changes up coming and classes changes as well. At this point I hope to add women's open studded solo class as well as women's studded ATV class. A couple possible changes discussed would be changing the 251cc open rubber solo to 91cc open rubber solo. In same principle, changing 506cc open sidecar to 91cc open sidecar. This would allow more entries for riders in these classes since they make these machines for this sport only and they could get more laps if they wanted to. For most classes the heat races are an extension of practice, we really should consider moto scoring system, as well as hole shot awards. More clubs are asking to get on the schedule, one idea is to have two independent Ice Divisions, a Saturday Division for points, a Sunday Division for points, and one State Championship at the end of the season. I would appreciate comments and concerns on these items as I prepare the written versions of them, please email me if possible at [email protected] or call anytime.

off-road ridErS advanCEThe AMA has released the list of 77 rid-ers who have advanced a class-level in the offroad racing discipline. Of those riders, here are those that complete locally in the D14 series. Pay attention to the two young bucks who just advanced to the B class. My guess is that they’ll achieve A-class status well before they start shaving!

by Steve Beane | May, 2014

How about that Ryan Villipoto guy? After starting the season relatively quietly, the Kawasaki rider has been on a tear of late, to the extent of wrapping up his FOURTH STRAIGHT supercross title, and a race early to boot. He faced down the young lions and the old warriors and won it going away, logging his 40th premier class win on the way.

Say a prayer for Rory Mead – the Shane Watts’ Dirtwise –sponsored Kiwi racer hit a tree hard on the final lap of the GNCC at Morganton, NC and suffered a C5/C6 spine injury leaving him paralyzed from mid-chest down. The brightest point in all of this is that there was no tearing or bleeding of the spinal cord, and with the spine stabilized it’s entirely possible he’ll make a full recovery. Let’s hope the advances in medical science and Rory’s determination allow him to walk again soon.

There’s a reason I don’t wager significant amounts of money on things outside of my control. I would have guessed the Family Enduro is Kalkaska this past weekend would have been run in snow, but surprisingly the trail was almost completely free

of the white stuff, and in fantastic shape. Maybe even more than that, the dirt was perfect! Good thing, because the thermometer never broke 40F all day.

Charlie Mullins refuses to give up on his GNCC aspirations, and he capitalized on Kalib Russell’s high-speed get-off to take first place in the Limestone 100 and capture the red plate as well. For his part, Russell was quick to get up and after spending some time in the pits was able to work all the way up to third to limit the damage. Mullins leads Russell 126-123 after five rounds; in the XC2 class YZ250F-mounted Ricky Russell (no relation to Kalib iirc) leads Grant Baylor 123-121.

Who’s ready for the MX outdoor nationals to start? Stadium racing is a great spectacle, but the outdoors is where legends are made. If Stewart’s knee is truly healed and Villipoto takes the gate (there is some speculation on this one), Ryan Dungey will have his hands full trying to claim a third 450 outdoor title. Add in Tomac, Barcia, a healthy Trey Canard, a returning Chad Reed, Kenny Roczen, RCH-backed Weston Peick and possibly even Mike Alessi and the 2014 series is STACKED.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again – Michigan has some of, if not THE best trails in Michigan. Grab yourself a spark arrestor and some handguards and get out there.

FAMILY ENDURO SERIES, INC (Kalkaska, MI) | April 26Story by Thomas Dunn | Photos by CaptureMe-Photography.com

The Family Enduro Series Arbor Day Enduro, in its 12th year, has become one of the premiere events in the Family Enduro Series. The event, held the last weekend in April, is part of the Kalkaska Nati onal Trout Festi val. The Village of Kalkaska welcomes the riders as part of the week’s festi viti es and work very closely with the group and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to allow off road motorcycles in areas that otherwise would not be available to us. The Department of Natural Resources, under permit, allows the FES to put trail in areas, called compartments, secti ons that will be logged within 2 years. These compartments provide excellent areas for brand new trail that has been untouched by motorized recreati on. This makes for some of the best riding of the season. Although the weather this year refused to cooperate, temperatures only in the low 40’s, the rain held off all day to allow for a cool if not cold ride for the 153 riders that showed up to ride. Many of the riders are the core group of FES riders that ride most if not all of the events of the Series, but there was quite a few local riders that came out to ride areas of Kalkaska that they cannot ride any other ti me of the year. The course, 22 miles of mostly single track, some used last year, some two track and then several miles of new trail, kept the riders busy as they tried to keep on ti me to check points hidden along the course for the fi rst loop of 2. The fi rst loop set at 12 mph average unti l the A, Band C classes split, then upping the average to 18 mph. Aft er a short break, the riders from 12 years old and up took off for their second loop set at 18 mph except for a parti cularly technical secti on that was set back to 12 mph for safety purposes. The big winner of the day and Overall Champion of riders under 16 years of age was Race Vollmar from Ohio. In the 11-15 Women’s class Megan Nannenga took fi rst over Shelby Handrich and Alexis Nichols D14 Secretary, Heather Soenksen took fi rst in the 16 and older Women’s class, by emergency points over Stephanie Williams. Gunnar Buhr took the win in the D Class, with Justi n Kurncz and Fletcher Collins in 2nd and 3rd. The A Buddy class saw Emma Coughlin win and Lydia Hopkins taking 2nd. B class winner Hunter Harter 2nd Tyler Miller and Matt Alkema 3rd. For all the results visit www.d14enduro.org

Would you be in line to compete if Ice rac-ing becomes a Winter X Games sport?I would absolutely try, hope they include quads.

What are your thoughts of running a MOTO scoring versus the current pro-gram?Ummmmm, I got mixed emoti ons on that. At this point, I think more informati on should be put out about that.

For the sake of constructi ve criti cism, can you tell me three things we should sustain as race organizers, and three things you would like to see improved on?I defi nitely like the plaques/plates vs tro-phies. I was really pleased with the imple-mentati on of trackside soft ware, really makes registrati on smooth and paperwork easy to understand. I'd like to see more plowing, or at least more strategic plow-ing. They usually do a preset amount of plowing it seems like, and if they are behind schedule they do less. Maybe keep the hole shot area extra clean, plowing is very im-portant for the quad classes. I guess less plowing could be bett er in parking lots too, to help protect our studs.

DISTRICT 14, LANSING M/C, MICHIGAN OFF-ROAD EVENTS, DEPT. OF NATURAL RESOURCES, CYCLE CONSERVATION CLUB OF MICHIGAN & FAMILY ENDURO SERIES, INC. (Kalkaska, MI) | April 27story & photos submitt ed by Thomas Dunn

Ten years ago, the District 14 Enduro Division, needing to do something to help their plight of losing the use of land for their events, came up with an idea to give back and help the Michigan Department of Natural Resources with the areas damaged by illegal O.R.V. use.

With the help of the relati onship that was built between the DNR and Lansing Motorcycle Club (which I am a Member) and now reti red DNR Forester Dave Johnson, We came up with an idea to replant and police the areas that were damaged, by the poor choices of some O.R.V users and causing problems within the DNR for Forest Certi fi cati on.

Working directly with the DNR, Lansing Motorcycle Club, The Cycle Conservati on Club and the Family Enduro Series, the Arbor Day Tree planti ng was born.

The direct results over the years has been a bett er working relati onship between the District and it’s clubs and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the Cycle Conservati on Club of Michigan and a bett er working relati onship with the State Legislators.

The Village of Kalkaska now counts on the economic benefit of our riders being part of the Festival and helps how ever it can to continue to have our events in their community. The direct results to our riders is wonderful trail that is allowed, in areas of the community and the State Land surrounding it, which is off limits to motorized recreation any other time of the year. Thank you, goes out to all those in the Kalkaska area DNR and the Cadillac Unit Managers with out their help none of this would be possible. Special thank you to Forester Kelly Standerfer for taking time out of his Sunday to come out every year to instruct us how to plant properly and bringing equipment and of course the trees that are planted.

THE BECKER CHRONICLESby Mark Becker #184, Hare Scramble Chairperson

double p'sBlackhawks – April 06

April 6 started our fi rst hare scramble at the Plymouth Blackhawks in Culver, IN. I last rode this track in 2011. This is an ex-cellent piece of real estate. It has great fl owing singletrack with a few muddy spots to keep it honest. There’s no moto secti ons but it does have plenty of open fi eld twist-it-to-the-stop grass tracks.

The weather was cold in the morning but warmed up to 50 plus degrees by mid-day. I consider that to be ideal temps. The biggest surprise was seeing dust. I expected patches of snow and ice in the woods. 2 weeks prior to this event the parking area was blanketed in snow.

The club had to cut out almost 2 miles of singletrack which was in the low area. We sti ll had 6 miles to roost on. It was most everyone’s fi rst ride so the course was technical but open enough to keep a good rhythm. There was a short ti ght secti on that required an upper body workout to navigate. I remember bounc-ing over tree roots that tested my sus-pension. What I remember the most was the killer sand whoops. Those were big enough to swallow my enti re front wheel. I have not dealt with whoops that size since riding public ORV trail. I know most guys despise whoops but they can be fun if you ride smart and set your bike up well. Although, once you get ti red whoops will compound your misery. If it was easy then everyone would ride a hare scramble.

Scoring went well even though riders had a straight shot in and out. I typically pre-fer to snake them in to keep speeds as slow as possible and exit at an angle to prevent my scoring people from roost. I received a call from the AMA Monday morning with a rider’s complaint. I ex-pected it to be about my sound enforce-ment. Instead, a rider decided to use scoring as his personal drag strip. The end result was a loss of a lap which he claimed “unfair”. Let me make this clear-

my scoring people deserve to work in a safe environment. Please proceed slow and easy through scoring and the world will be a bett er place for us all. The AMA backed me 100%. Enough said.

As I expected this new club had a few snags throughout the day. It can be diffi -cult for a club to change their program to fi t District 14’s needs. It was a long day. The EMT’s arrived late and there was a scheduling SNAFU that set the program back at least an hour. The ATV’s ended up running last and it was quite late for them. We have a bett er understanding now and their next event will go much smoother. This track is worth the long drive even though it seemed like I was weaving all over the planet to fi nd it.

Moto Tally results were delayed on our web site. It was unfortunate but unavoid-able. I expect results to be posted within 24 hours from this point forward. Stuff happens and we deal with it. My apolo-gies to the 3 hour classes in advance. The next event I am going to cut it back to 2.5 hours to help streamline the program. This should have been done the fi rst ti me as had been agreed upon but I forgot. I messed up.

We had about 170 riders show up. Those are good numbers and hope they main-tain. I love this track and look forward to riding again.

Portland – April 27Our 2nd round brought us back on home turf. Portland is my homecoming. I have so many memories of this track. The club gave us 5 miles of fun to play on. The moto track took on an “Old Man Friend-ly” feeling. It seemed a bit easier but also a lot faster. The club tweaked some new changes and sti ll kept the old track fl avor.

The woods were changed up with an ag-gressive zig-zag patt ern that had some abrupt corners. Let’s be honest, the only purpose of the woods secti on is to pro-vide an entry into scoring. And that leads

into the comic relief I witnessed. I could devote this enti re arti cle on my observa-ti ons at scoring. I will never understand the mystery of the incorrect lane selec-ti on. This track is the only one where seasoned riders go into brainfart mode and lose their comprehension of left and right. I watched at least a dozen riders choose the wrong lane. I swear I could hear the “Three Stooges” theme music playing in the background. I decided it best to direct traffi c at the entry to scor-ing. Which leads me into another gripe, please identi fy your number plates with your class lett er. Some riders att empt at class lett ers were fails. If I can’t read them then neither can the back-up scor-ers. Please read our rules and identi fy your helmet and bike correctly.

I want to give credit to an excepti onal young lady. During the morning kids race, Allysa Bennett launched her mini bike into the creek. She must have been go-ing too fast to make the corner. She was emoti onally upset but ok physically. Once her bike was extracted out of the water and restarted, she jumped back on. This young lady was on a mission! She was soaked and it was cold. I expected her to quit but like a true Bennett , she pressed on. I was impressed with her fi ghti ng spir-it. Well done!

Another shout out to our former champ Jordan Mapes. He showed me his hands aft er the race and I was shocked. I never saw blisters that looked like moon cra-ters. I expect Jordan to have a pain fi lled recovery week. Since I’m in a good mood now, a special acknowledgement to the Sr. class winner Brian Kidner. He won the class and got 4th OA. What makes it special is he did it on a bike that scored 92 decibels at sound test. He challenged me to test him. The only thing I can say is, skill and fi tness wins a hare scramble. Bikes don’t win races, riders do.

Check Moto Tally for the complete re-sults. Eyes up and looking forward, our season is under way.

On Tuesday, April 22nd the Michigan Senate closed a loophole in the state law allowing motorcycle operators to obtain a Temporary Instructi on Permit each season without ever completi ng a skills test required for endorsement. This house bill (#4781) is headed to Gov. Snyder's desk.

The new legislati on, sponsored by Rep. Brad Jacobsen (R-Oxord) was unanimously approved by the House earlier this year. n This limits riders to two temporary permits over a ten year period.

To acquire a Temporary Instructi on Permit, which prohibits night driving and requires helmet use, operators only need to pass the vision and knowledge test. Twenty two thousand temporary permits were issued in 2012. Unendorsed riders were abusing the Temporary Instructi on Permit and just getti ng one year aft er year without taking the skills test.

Analysis shows that unendorsed riders were involved in more then half of all motorcycle crashes in the fi rst six months aft er the repeal of the mandatory helmet law in 2012. About 20% of all registered motorcycle owners were endorsed in 2012.

Thanks to help from ABATE and the Michigan Motorcycle Acti on Team, a sub-committ ee of the Governor's Traffi c Safety Advisory Commission and supported by the Skilled Motorcyclist Associati on of Responsible, Trained and Educated Riders.

The Fellowship of Christi an Athletes Mo-tocross Michigan or (FCA MX Michigan) is a non-denominati onal ministry that seeks to impact the world of motocross for Je-sus Christ. Since 2003 when the ministry began in Indiana, the main aim has al-ways been to reach riders doing what they love… twisti ng the thrott le at the track. With teams in over 10 states and growing, FCA is excited to conti nue serving the MX community in Michigan.

In 2014, the goal for the Michigan team is to conti nue to expand team presence and parti cipati on through trackside minis-try and camp. Like last year, we hope to conti nue to provide prayer before riding at tracks. Additi onally, FCA MX will work with tracks to provide chapel services or devo-ti ons at two day events as chaplains are

available. Most recently, FCA held chapel

service led by Pastor Barry Ruff at Freelin Mx during the Spring Fling April 27, 2014.

The Fellowship of Christi an Athletes MX team also seeks to serve the MX community by hosti ng family friendly events at the track. For those riders visiti ng Bulldogs MX on Easter Sunday, an egg hunt was hosted for young riders and spectators. Dur-ing the 2013 season a variety of events were held at D14 tracks including RC car and BMX races, movie nights, corn hole tournaments, face painti ng, and hot dog roasts.

With the re-turn of Su-percross to Detroit, FCA MX Michi-gan was thrilled to host the FCA VIP experi-ence where 237 Michi-gan MX race fans att end-ed. Aft er braving the cold, parti ci-pants gained early entry to the Super-cross event to see Steve “ C h a p p y ”

PLYMOUTH BLACKHAWKS (Culver, IN) | April 06Story and photos submitt ed by Dan Brendel, Hare Scrambles ATV Vice Chair

Finally the snow has melted and the race season can start. I arrived at the Plymouth Blackhawk facility early sunday morning not knowing what to expect from this new track. I thought I had showed up a litt le early for a aft ernoon race, but Bo Hatf ield beat us all there. Thinking it was the normal morning race, he arrived at 7:00 am. Needless to say, Bo had a chance to really spend some ti me getti ng to know the place. The facility was running a litt le behind schedule so everyone got to spend some ti me bench racing and checking out everyone's new race rides. It was nice to see Chad and Sarah Meyers fi nally open the check book and get a new pair of YFZ 450's. 28 riders made the voyage to the 1st round of the District 14 Harescramble races season and were greeted with a great track. I was expecti ng a mudder from the recent snow melt, but that was not the case. There were actually a few spots that had dried out enough to generate some dust. The track was 6 miles of sandy woods that was fast and rough. It consisted of fl owing trail with deep whoops and a fast fi eld secti on with very few ti ght switchbacks. No mx track was included in the course and the trees were spaced wide enough to get though without worrying about hitti ng too many. I only seen one quad get bit by one of those nasty trees; Jacob Bollinger had a broken ti e rod and needed a ride out. Sound testi ng will be done diff erent this year. Instead of testi ng before the race, the ATV's will be sound tested as you come through scoring. When the race is over and the the checker fl ag is out, the fi rst three that come through the fi nish, and are under suspicion of being too loud, will get sound tested. If you are found to be over the 98db you will be docked one lap. I know this has not been supported by everyone, but we need to do this to keep our racing and riding areas open.

PORTLAND TRAIL RIDERS (Portland, MI) | April 12-13

It is April and we all know what that means. IT IS MOTOCROSS AND HARESCRAMBLE TIME!!! We had our fi rst motocross event this pasted weekend April 12th and 13th. I have to start with Sunday mornings fi rst gate drop. It was a full gate. Never seen this much enthusiasm that early in the morning. Racers had already started packing their gates by 8:15 for the 8:30 gate drop. Parents were mill-ing around giving instructi ons to their racers. By 8:25 everyone was ready to go. You could tell the parents were nervous and the kids were ready. The ti me hit 8:30 the Red Light came on, on the starti ng tree. A few last second instructi on given by the parents. Then there came the yellow. Elbows up. The GREEN Light. Racers staring at the starti ng gate waiti ng for it to twitch just a litt le. Down goes the gate. Racers heading out of the gate at full bore. It is a very ti ght start with this many on the gate. A few start pulling ahead of the pack by just a few inches. Into the hard right hand turn 5,6,7 racers wide. Into the mini track they went and the Easter Egg Hunt was underway. (What? Everyone knows that you cannot start D-14 races unti l 9 am). I want to give a big shout out to Fierce Power Sports for sponsoring this Easter Egg Hunt. The kids had a great ti me. Out on the big track with our quads batt ling hard in the C class the fi rst moto featured a batt le between Dylan Mercure on the Yamaha and Josh Woods on the Suzuki with Woods edging out Mercure for the moto win. But then came the second moto Woods with the hole shot and Mercure right on his back ti res swapping positi ons as the laps went by but then into the new switch back Mercure digs in hard and makes the pass on Woods taking the lead and then the checker giv-ing Dylan Mercure the overall win. The open B class the race was on between Jake Jones on the 559 and the 81 of Chris Williams in the fi rst moto it was all Jones, but in the second Williams got out in front and Jones was running right up his tail pipe in second. Williams riding that two stroker like he had stole it. He was hammering it through the switch backs with Jones in tow and blow over the berm giving up 1st place to Jones. But Williams was not done. Now it was his turn to put the pressure on Jones. Showing

him the wheel in almost every turn. Then nothing from that Suzuki, no power, no sound, just poof. Blown motor which gave the uncontested over all to Jake Jones. The 14-24 class was also primed for great racing which was pitti ng Jones, Davey Merril, Bryce Libtow on the 966 and Eddie Morris on the 59. Morris coming up from riding in the south took 1st in both motos and was looking fast and mistake free. While Jones and Mer-ril was batt ling each other for second with Jones taking a second in the fi rst moto not giving Merril any room to pass coming to the fi nish line. The second moto went more into Merril's favor motoring around Jones to take second in the second moto and giving him second over-all. We had our 1st Hare scramble of the year yesterday. Before I get into the racing I have to tell you I seen one of the best displays of sportsmanship from a young man that I have not seen in a while. It was the 299 of Litt le Luke Adams, not to confuse him with Big Luke Ad-ams. The green fl ag drop and Litt le Luke ripped the hole shot and was out in front. Down around through scoring he was on fi re. Through the

woods secti on, Luke was gaining on the class in front of him, he had them in his sights. Then "crash", "bang" and then the cartwheel. The rider in front of him had hit the ground for a yard sale crash. Luke on the gas trying to miss the downed rider. Then on the breaks, Ad-ams stops a few feet ahead of the rider who was trapped under his bike. Now we are talking a couple of 13 year olds. Adams throws down his bike and runs over to the downed rider. Picks his bike off of him. Now here comes second, third, and fourth passed Adams who conti nues to help the downed rider get out from under his bike, then starts it for him, helps him on and lets him go. Now Adams remounts his bike fi res it up and fi nds himself in fi ft h place. You would think that was his reward for helping a downed rider. going from fi rst to fi ft h. But NO! Adams now back on the gas catches the downed rider he helped and makes the pass. Now working on catching fi rst through fourth in his own class. Before the fi rst lap is done he has them in his sight. Catching fourth place, then Third, and now second place and makes the passes, leaving Adams in second. Next lap coming up Adams see the fi rst place rider and rolls on the thrott le. Yep you guessed it Ad-ams just blew by the current leader and takes the win. Brings tears to my eyes just writi ng

FREELIN MX (Brown City, MI) | April 26/27

Mike and his crew were determined to get in a race this April. Mother Nature had a couple misty thoughts on Friday, but determinati on won out. Over 330 riders made their way to the Thumb and put on a great show all weekend. Once a year FreelinMX plays host to the D14 ATV rac-ing crowd. It’s fun to watch 4-wheels fl y through the sky and land with the greatest of ease. Well… someti mes not that easy, but defi nitely a crowd pleaser. There was quite a bit of close racing acti on with the 2 wheel crowd as well. Some well fought, hard won batt les played out. The long, cold, did I say longggg, winter put every-one in the mood to fi nally see dirt and get

out to play. The track had seen its share of riders prior to this race. A few open prac-ti ces saw hundreds of bikes try out the grip. As for our ATV friends, this was the fi rst ti me many have been on this track in two years. Last year the weather was not friendly and we missed our 4 wheel rac-ers.

The track crew did an excellent job getti ng the track in decent shape aft er the rains on Friday. Saturday morning practi ce was wet but by Saturday morning mid fi rst motos, everything was prime. Sunday saw mostly sunshine and excellent track conditi ons. The weekend was windy and cold but if you have ever been to Freelin before you may be used to the fair winds

that play out over the pastures and farm-land that completely surround the track. With 45 degree weather the winds are not that fair. In fact they can be downright harsh on your hands as you att empt to keep them on the bars and thrott le down.

Thanks to the dedicati on of many racers, staff , fl aggers and spectators, the week-end was great. It was so nice to see old friends and make some cool new ones. The season has now begun and you can look forward to another fun-fi lled D14 race season at Freelin. The next race event is our Freelin FRENZY – always a great ti me – June 21/22. There will be kids games & prizes all weekend, the GIANT blow-up slide will be up, watch for some

fi reworks come dusk on Saturday night, and more. Thanks for making our season start so well. We plan on giving you the best each and every race – You Deserve It!

PORTLAND TRAIL RIDERS (Portland, MI) | April 27Story and photos by Dan Brendel, Hare Scrambles ATV Vice Chair

Something seemed a litt le off about round two of the D-14 Harescramble series on April 27. In the past Portland Trail Riders had held the fi rst race of the year, but this ti me the anti cipati on associated with the fi rst race wasn't there. But once people start showing up on Sunday morning, the excitement of a race at Portland came back. It was good to see the many faces that did not make the trek to Indiana and give them a hard ti me about it. Portland had been working hard on the track since last ti me we had been there in the Fall. The MX track was changed, which I felt made it faster but a whole lot safer. The infi eld of the track now had one small double with a big jump at the end of the straightway that you could hit as fast as you wanted. I have not seen any pictures from people hitti ng that jump, but I would like to think I looked good jumping it. They also took the big table top jumps down a litt le bit which made the landing the same as the take off . This was probably one of the longest tracks I can remember racing there. Most of the lap ti mes looked to be in the 12 minute range. C-class was the largest class, with ten entries. This is encouraging and I hope this kind of turn out will conti nue throughout the rest of the season. Keep spreading the word! I would like to remind everyone that we do need to be running numbers on our machines. Numbers front and back are required. The computers are prett y good, but every once in awhile they do go down and the numbers are for back-up scoring. If you don't have a number, the last three digits of your AMA number are what most people use. There are also color sti ckers at sign-up that

you should put on the back of your helmets. These help to identi fy you and the class you are in during the race to the other riders. I know I have been getti ng some grief about the colors I had picked blending in with the color of the helmets, so next year I will change to more brighter colors to avoid anymore complaints. On a good note we are have a race series within our

race series this year. The Log to Lumber race series will consist of the two M-33 races and the White Trash race. You must race all three rounds to qualify for the series points. They will be awarding great prizes to the top fi nishers. The top fi nisher will be getti ng a brand new Beta ATV (if they make one by then but don't hold your breath). It should be great racing at top notch faciliti es.

VOLLMAR RACE REPORTFAMILY ENDURO SERIES, INC (Kalkaska, MI) | April 26Story by Race Vollmar | Photos by CaptureMe-Photography

Round two of the Family Enduro Series took my dad, grandpa, and I to Kalkaska, Michigan. We left Friday after I got out of school, and arrived at my Uncle Tony's house at around nine. As soon as we got there I got ready to go to bed. It was cold and windy when we got to the staging grounds Saturday morning, and it looked like it was going to start raining any minute. After I signed-up I got my route sheet ready, my number on, and my score card on, I went in the van and tried to keep warm. Once I got suited up I went to riders meeting and started getting my arms warmed up. The first few miles was mostly two-track, and were very cold. I was right on time for the first check, and I found the trail lots of fun. The course go better as the day went on, and one section had lots of hills and log crossings. After the twelve mph sections were over I had zero points. After a short reset the speed average was changed to eighteen mph. The first check at the new speed average was less than a mile into the section, a lot of people were early, but I was fortunate enough not to burn the check. However I was early to the out check, which pretty much took away the lead that I got from the in check. After the first loop I was in second place, only one point from the lead. I came in on time after the eighth check after being held up behind some slower riders. I had to watch my time for the rest of the course because of how flowing the sections were. I came into the final check on time, and that would give me the win for the day, as well as the overall. After two races I have built up a ten point lead over second place.

A special thanks to: MSR, Elizabeth Scott Community, Unabiker, Championship Powersports, onlyarange.com, Dad, and Grandpa.

stolen recently, so we started by flag. The flag dropped quicker than I expected and I dumped the clutch and stalled my bike. My trusty 2 stroke took a lot longer than it should have to restart and I wound up

'm back in Michigan after another winter in Cozumel, Mexico having to deal with all that sunshine and warmth, that you guys missed this winter. The Mexican

race season, for me, started in December. Kovky and I took the van over to Playa Del Carmen for a regional race. It was too expensive to take our big race trailer over on the car ferry, and it was just the 2 of us racing for the Cozumel eXtreme team that

weekend. The track in Playa is right by the main highway through town. It's pretty visible to everyone driving by, so there is always a big spectator turnout. They have

a huge sound system playing loud music between races and announcing during the race. The Master A moto was the first moto of the day. It was also my first start back on my Team Babbitt's sponsored YZ250 two stroke. Their starting gate had been

spotting the pack about 12 seconds. Once it fired, I started working my way through the pack. The sound system is so loud I could hear the announcer saying "cinco, cinco, tres" (my number 553) several

I had finished about 7 seconds behind 1st place. So if I hadn't screwed up the start, I would have won. Kovky took second in his Master B race and I took 5th. The vet classes in Mexico are a little strange. Master B is the faster class and is +40. Master A is slower and is +30. Those are the only 2 vet classes. Kovky decided to race the MX1 class and did pretty well. He finished 5th. Kovky is in good shape, but around the 18 minute mark he was

looking at us to find out how much longer he had to race. MX1 is a pro class and is 20 minutes plus 1 lap.

In late January, the Czech guys came to ride and race with us. Jef Jozifec came back again and this time he brought two 2014 KTM 450s as luggage. He sold them in Mexico before going back the Czech Republic. The pro Czech guys from last year, Petr Bartos and Milan Rozec, where in India doing a photo shoot and didn't make the trip to Cozumel this year. The pro guy this year was Pavel Kejmar. A 21 year old supermoto champion (supermoto is big in the Czech Republic) and he has also won some supercross races in Germany. Since this was the 2nd year that Cozumel had a

European pro rider with us, and Kovky is a top vet rider, we got a lot of attention from the Mexican racing community. The Riviera Maya Race team invited us over

to practice on the Playa Del Carmen track. They paid for hotel rooms on the plaza in Playa for us and picked us up each morning to take us to the track for our private riding session. We negotiated with the Trans Caribe car ferry to get half off, so we were able to take the race trailer and split the cost between Kovky, Jef, Pavel, and myself. Still expensive, but doable. After 3 days of practice in Playa, we took the 4

hour trip down to Chetumel to race. The owner of the track in Chetumel had been trying to get the Cozumel eXtreme team to come there and race for a while, but we didn't want to go without the race trailer. This was our first trip to the track. It had really nice facilities and even had showers. Once again, our rooms were paid for and they even gave us money to help cover the travel expenses. We had 2 days of private practice at the track before race day. Everyone was looking forward to the matchup between Pavel and Martin Garcia (the holder of the #1 national plate in Mexico). Martin rides for KTM and was on a 450. Pavel was riding our 2009 RM250 rental bike. In the first moto of MX1, Martin got the holeshot and had stretched the lead out. Pavel was 3rd through the first turn and took a little time getting around Christian, the number 2 Mexican National pro rider. Pavel was closing the

about it. He is getti ng my vote for rider of the year already. In the heavy division we have last year's reigning champ Tyler Hill with a new teammate instead of Will Hicks he now has Jacob Hicks. Both looking fast, but they have some major competi ti on. Teaming up this year is Jacob Jones and Seth Green who are also very fast. It was Green and Jones with the lead by litt le over two minutes go-ing into the second hour of the three hour ride. Jones on the track running fourth gear pinned around the big right hand sweeper on the moto cross secti on of the track and down on the ground hard goes Jones. Out comes the medics and Jones was done for the day leaving Green to ride the remaining two hours. While on the ground and chang-ing out the transponder here comes the Hicks and Hills Show now taking over fi rst place. To add insult to injury Green comes out of the woods with a fl at ti re switches to Jones's bike which was just rebuilt (Made Big Jeff cringe and grit his teeth and gave all of us something to heckle him about). Somehow got back on the track and was scored 7 minutes ahead of the Hicks and Hill Show. Now we all know things happen and Green was really sti ll in second, but karma not with the Jones and Green Team during the aft er race sound check Jones and Green gets docked a lap moving them back to tenth and giving the Hicks and Hill Show fi rst which is the way it should be today. By the way Jonesy was ok but very sore. A couple more menti ons before I go. Austi n Stemler again schools his dad on how to win, takes fi rst in his class. Dave Merril not able to get his bike started unti l his enti re class is already around the fi rst turn charges off the starti ng line. Before the fi rst lap is even close to being complete Dave fi nds himself out in front and check-ing out. gap at the halfway mark, but sti ll had some work to do to catch Garcia. Then Garcia's rear ti re went fl at and it wasn't long before Pavel passed him for the lead. The second moto started prett y much the same as the fi rst. Pavel took Christi an high in a corner and made the pass. Right aft er that, Pavel's bike started having engine problems and he slowed down and Christi an made the pass back. Christi an took 1st with 2 second place fi nishes and Pavel took 2nd with a 1-3 over Garcia's 5-1. Pavel took to heart that 2nd is the fi rst loser and was very unhappy with his fi nish. The rest of us were unhappy because we never got to see the race between Pavel and Marti n that we had anti cipated.

Jef and I raced in both the Master A (30+) and the Master B (40+). In the Master A race (master A only gets 1 moto), Jef got the holeshot and I was 2nd through the fi rst turn. I was right on Jef's rear fender the enti re race and showed him a wheel several ti mes, but could not make the pass. A fast local vet rider passed us both and we fi nished 2nd and 3rd. In the fi rst moto of Master B, Kovky fi nished 2nd. Once again, I was right behind Jef the whole race, but couldn't make the pass. We fi nished 5th and 6th. Right before the second moto of Master B, they watered part of the track by the starti ng line. The combinati on of hard surface and water made it more like ice than dirt. I came into one of the bowl corners and turned on the gas which resulted in me doing a 360. Somehow I managed to stay up only to fall in another slick corner. Half way through the race, I caught up to Jef again. I knew I was faster than Jef in one of the whoop secti ons. On the last lap, I fi nally made a pass on him. I knew Jef was taking the far inside on the

secti on right aft er the whoops. So I hugged the edge of the track, but he somehow forced his way inside of me. We came into the next corner really hot. I had half a bike lead on him, but was on the outside. Jef couldn't hold his

line and pushed me off the track right before a double. I rode through the weeds and entered the track aft er the double and in front of Jef. I thought it was all fun and racing, but when I got back to the pits, I found out that Jef was mad. He thought I had cheated, because I didn't turn around and enter the track where I left it. I thought I was OK because I had entered at the next safest place and was in front of him when I went off the track, so I hadn't gained a place while off course. My 6-5 fi nish gave me 5th place over his 5-6. I didn't think it really matt ered, because I didn't expect a trophy for 5th and neither of us would have enough races to be in the points chase. In Mexico, you get your awards in a presentati on at the end of the day. They called my name for 5th place. Mexico is FIM rules, like the Czech Republic, so I should have been docked a place. I gave the plague to Jef. Kovky took fi rst in the second moto, so he was fi rst overall with a 2-1.

Aft er we returned to Cozumel, we used our plagues and our representati on of Cozumel to negoti ate for a Trans Caribe Ferry sponsorship and now we can cross for free. Kovky decided to stay in Mexico this summer and go for a ti tle. He'll be at Red Bud, to race the 45+ class, on nati onal weekend. This will be his 3rd straight year racing the 45+ class at Redbud. If you'd like to get some practi ce in the warm, sunny, Cozumel weather this winter, and see what it's like to race Mexican motocross, check out the Cozumel eXtreme website or Facebook pages. You can also stop by my awning this summer for more informati on. Mine is the one with the Cozumel eXtreme\Team Babbitt s banner and the white number 553 CRF450 in front. See you at the races.

mix. All three of them were no more than fi ve seconds apart the enti re race. As each one would make a mistake, the other two would gain, and then a half lap later the others would make the mistake. Joe made a big bobble late in the race and Mark slipped into second and put a charge on for the win. Tim was feeling the pressure and was doing everything he could to stay out front. As they came to the last few turns, Tim was in the lead with Mark looking for a way around. He tried to make a run down the last hill but Tim had a litt le extra energy to hold him off in the last turn. Joe had a great view only a few seconds back in third putti ng him in third overall as well.

The Evoluti on class was the lightest with only three racers. Tom Lee grabbed the holeshot and pulled away from Mark Havalda and Steve Walters. Tom looked the best he has out front and on the gas all race long. Mark did his best in second but his bike seemed to be holding him back a litt le. He rode well but was disappointed in second and looked to go aft er Tom in moto two. Steve rode hard as well but got caught up a litt le with the racers from the other drop and stalled his charge. Moto two was a good one to watch. Tom got the holeshot with Mark on his heels. Tom would motor away in the deep sand and up the hills and Mark would catch him over the jumps and into the corners. This went on for the en-ti re race but there were just too many high speed spots where Mark’s 125 was just no match for Tom’s 250. So at the checkered fl ag, it was Tom with a 1-1 to Mark’s 2-2 and a litt le ways back was Steve with his 3-3.

This is a great start to another fun season of Vintage MX. We will be at Polka Dots in a few weeks then we have some ti me off before heading to Bulldogs on May 18th. Then we head to our non D-14 event on Memorial Day and then to Batt le Creek for June 8th. For any other informati on please check out MichiganVintageMotocross.com. Thanks for checking in and I hope to see you at the races.

NingXia Nitro’s unique formula of pure essenti al oils and powerful cogniti ve enhanc-ers help support mental acuity and enhances physical performance. These cogniti ve enhancers include not only well-known B vitamins, green tea extract, and ginseng; but they also include a proprietary Nitro Alert™ oil blend consisti ng of vanilla and chocolate oils, yerba mate, spearmint, peppermint, nutmeg, black pepper, wolfb erry seed oil, and ribose.

Ribose is a fi ve-carbon sugar that is naturally produced in every cell and is the back-bone of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), a fundamental energy compound that drives nearly all chemical reacti ons in human cells. Although it is a sugar, it is metabolized diff erently than sucrose or glucose and is absorbed instantly into the bloodstream. Unlike other sugars, excess ribose isn’t converted into fat by the body; instead, it is saved for use in ATP energy producti on. This vital diff erence is key to the importance of supplementi ng; and doing so supports cellular energy levels, energy recovery, and energy reserves. It also supports healthy energy levels in the heart and muscles.

By uti lizing Bioenergy Ribose®, Young Living delivers ribose that is: 1. non-GMO; 2. naturally occurring; and 3. Kosher and Halal certi fi ed

If that isn’t enough to convince you of the power of this product, Bioenergy Ribose®

is currently part of the training regimens of many Olympic athletes. These athletes not only undergo extreme physical stress, but they are also limited to natural supple-ments and subjected to extensive testi ng. If ribose can help top athletes support their energy levels, just think of what it can do for you.

GRAND KANKAKEE TRAIL (Roselawn, IN) | April 12story by Mike Maurer

We had great weather for round 1 of the Family Enduro Series in Roselawn, IN. It was great to see old friends and the new faces of the FES. One of the highlights of the weekend was to meet FOUR generati ons of the Harter family as they went through sign up. Denver Harter got to ride this event with his son, grandson and two of his great grandsons. Hunter won the 4-6 year old class and his brother was Jacob was second in the Buddy class. The Harter family and their club – Treaty MC will be hosti ng round 3 of the series in Greenville, OH. The Grand Kankatee Trail Riders did a great job of laying our a 9.5 mile course that allowed all riders to determine when they had enough riding for this early in the season. At the end of the day there were a lot of smiles on faces. Other class winners were Grant Barker in the Buddy class, Rex Valek 7-8 year old), Ca-din Alcorn (9-11), Race Vollmar and Dawson Vandecar ti ed for the best score in the 12-13 class (Race had bett er ti e breaker scores), Nicholas Schoonveld (14-15), and the Women winners were Nicole Nannenga and Ashley Mills. It is fun to watch the riders compete on the trail and then tell the trail stories aft er the event. The 55+ class is entertaining to watch Herb, FMF, Alex, Gibby and Chester. Herb had the best score at this event, but it is a long season with 11 events and this group will be competi ng unti l November. I enjoy watching riders “graduate” from the family enduros to ride on Sunday. There are many new members of the C Junior class who were riding on Saturday last year. As this arti cle goes to print, we are taking down the arrows from the Arbor Day en-duro in Kalkaska. It was a successful enduro and a producti ve tree planti ng on Sunday. Our next stop is a new locati on – Greenville, Ohio. The Harter family and the Treaty City MC are working to create a family friendly course for their fi rst FES event. We will be in Ohio on May 17th. Future events:

JUNE 28 – Mini Moose in Marquett e, MIJULY 19 – Grapevine Enduro in Lawton, MI

JULY 26 – Matt hews Family Enduro at the Covered Bridge in Matt hews, IN
