H&L racing (West Branch ,Mi) | February 16story by Kerry Klug | Photos by Mike Barton

Long before the sun was rising H&L organizers were busy on the morning of Sunday, February 16 as riders started coming in at 7:00 AM to the H&L racing location of Bunting Sand & Gravel in West Branch, MI. As the sun was rising, 169 entrants made their way through tech inspection and on to sign-up in the very warm tent with the heat provided by “Frostbusters” Ground Thawing of West Branch. Also found in the warming tent were the concessions with plenty of hot coffee, cocoa, hot dogs, brats and some great chili, all provided by West Branch VFW. The West Branch track is a favorite for the riders because of its large safe corners and straightaways and its ½ mile size. The always perfectly groomed hard surface was again great thanks to Mother Nature and the weeks of prep time by H&L’s Chris Liesen. New this year was the addition of a smaller track at the west end for the very smaller classes to lessen the chances of blown little motors and to keep the program moving at a better pace. Everyone seemed to like the new setup especially the tuners (Dads & Moms) who didn’t “smoke” their motors on the big track!

Once practice was over and gearing was set, a rider's meeting was called to order. Running order was posted, riders and the great sponsors Marine Transport, Kold Kutter, Stevens Cycle, Green Ace Hardware, Home Depot, Bunting Sand & Gravel, Towne Club Party Store, Valley Trail Riders and Ogemaw Hills Bike Week were thanked. A 50/50 was announced to benefit D-14 member Ross Kershner who is battling cancer. As they did last year, H&L drew two random classes to receive an extra $50.00 to add a little bonus and excitement to the day to everyone's approval! This year's lucky classes and winners were: 500A – Brian Bigelow and Vintage – Dave Eddy. Corner workers were called to their places on the little track and AMA Pro starter Larry Schmitt went to work. It’s hard to go to an ice or flat track race and NOT find John “Zoomer” Zawarkin doing something to help out and the H&L West Branch race is no different. John with the help of Kerry Klug kept riders staged and ready to go to keep the large number of riders and classes moving smoothly. The new computers and scoring program along with the hard work of VTR’s Joe Santos and Craig Scott kept the scoring and posting of the large

2014 AMA Ice Race Grand

ChampionshipNORTH AMERICAN ACTION SPORTS (Cadillac, MI) | February 8/9 story by Laidback Lenny Huftonphotos this page by Mike Barton, next page by SpeedPunksImages.com andBritanni Dwyer

Racing is dramatic and full of challenges, this year’s Championship up in Cadillac held true to form. While many said North American Action Sports couldn’t pull it off, they did! Each year the track gets better and the competition seems to get deeper. With a road course exhibition Saturday morning and the traditional oval following, there was plenty of action.

Allen Rabinette was voted AMA Ice Rider of the Year as he traded wins with his Parkinson Brothers Racing team mate Parker Norris. Allen won the 450 modified class, and Parker won the 500 DTX. They rode elbow to elbow in the mains as they put on a clinic for the rest of the field. The Parkinson’s have built up quite a stable of young talent and brought a trailer

full of “white knights” for their riders to compete on.

Christopher Blackmer won the AMA Youth Ice Rider of the Year winning the 85 Modified class. His Uncle Tim Blackmer was the proud tuner, and it was good to see him again. I remember way back when- Tim set up a 1982 YZ250 that did 97 MPH in the 1/8 mile! Christopher is a lucky young man to have an Uncle who knows how to make them run.

Craig “the Professor” Pickett collected another two championships bringing his grand total up to a staggering twenty seven. One of his wins came on yet another PBR machine in the

Open class, with honorable mention going to Jason McDonald finishing second aboard his Killer KX500! Craig also won the very competitive 40+ class enjoying a spirited battle with his longtime friend and rival Eddie “the Hitman” Hieftje aboard his Boughner Racing tuned CRF450. I have called many great battles between these two and this year was no exception.

You guys know I am somewhat 2-stroke biased, and one guy that really impressed me was Jeff Fredette on his KX250. I read somewhere that he competed in his thirtieth ISDE in 2013! He has always gone fast in the woods and on the ice, and this year was more of the same. He was flat out

flying on the road course and finished a respectable 3rd on the oval in the highly competitive 250 modified class which was won by Allen Rabinette. For those that missed it, I watched Steve Kurchak crash three times between turns one and two and still somehow kept it on two wheels to finish second! That was enough for me to back it down a couple notches and ride around all by myself in the main.

The Kold Kutter Shootout was again won by “Hammerin Hank” Wiles. The class was stacked 2 rows deep with some of the best racers in the country and it did not disappoint. Unfortunately there was a big crash on the back straight that took out one of the favorites- Jared Mees. It is a

Saturday morning’s Road Course exhibition was exciting as well with Jared Mees claiming victory in the Open Pro class over Bryan Bigelow and Wes Westesson. The “Professor”, Mees, and Westesson can be found tearing up the hard water of Genessee County on most any Sunday and their hard work and constant testing is obvious. Bob Maxwell was on fire all weekend on his Boughner Racing CRF450 and won the 30+ class with the likes of “the Professor”, and Eddie Hieftje not leaving him any room for

error. Jeff Freddete 2-smoked the 250 modified class. Jeff’s undeniable skills were demonstrated as he flicked his KX250 around the road course dominated by 4-strokes. Morgan Monroe claimed victory on her FRP sponsored steed in the Open B class. The races created a lot of excitement for riders and fans alike, and there is talk of bringing it back next year with its own dedicated day of competition.

There were a lot of heroes that weekend up in Cadillac. There was the Baja crew digging out two competitive

tracks and running a nearly seamless program, and then there were riders. This paper isn’t big enough to mention all the adventures and stories had by many, nor are some of them fit for print. But as always the riders and promoters overcame many obstacles and rode with heart and determination. It was my pleasure to watch some of the best, and some that want to be the best go after it elbow to elbow. Some great bench racing stories were made this year, and I am proud to be able to tell some of them…

testament to his training program and grit that he came away only banged up and bruised. Once they cleaned up the pieces of his bike (it was broken in two) they restarted the race. Wiles waited for and then seized the lead from Jacob Constantine and never looked back. Honorable mention to Jason McDonald as he muscled his Killer KX500 on a rough, demanding track to finish third! That’s two years in a row for Mr. Wiles and I think we can call him “King of the Kold Kutter” at least until next year.

March 2014 – Michigan’s AMA/D14 Motorsports News 9

ICE RACINGcontinued on page 15

February has brought us four more great ice rac-ing events and I don't think we have had eight events since 2007.

On February 2nd, Port Huron MC saw some beautiful weather at the first of the month, post-ing a lot of entries and all while running a speedy program! The next event took us to the Ice Racing Grand National in Cadillac MI on Feb-ruary 8 & 9, where we saw some very large entries in the ICE MOTO Classes for the first time! Following the National, we headed to West Branch where you drive down their entrance to a spectacular scene, especially if you're running a little late that day. H&L had set up a large smooth track with wide sweeping turns for the February 16th race, and boasted another large turn-out for the division. Following West Branch, we land in White Lake for two days of points racing on February 22nd & 23rd, where unfortunately Mother Nature had other plans. We were able to get day 1 off with a great finals under the lights, but we had to scrap day 2 due to flooding in the turns and the only can-cellation on this year's schedule with one race to go in Bentley on March 2nd.

Things to talk about next year are coming up already, and I have a couple pro-posals myself that I would like some feedback on. I would like to consider refor-matting our race setup. Every race we run 25 to 30 heat races that have almost no meaning. Riders run their heat race, maybe they win it, only to stall in the final and not place, and getting no credit for winning their first race. It's time for us to look at a MOTO scoring system that will turn our heats from an extra practice race, to an actual race for points so a simple mistake wont cost you all your points in the final. I have been running computer scenarios that show me at any regular given ice race, we can run a three MOTO race classes, so that rid-ers get the increased ride time they are looking for, and every race counts for something.

I have received a written request from some of the rubber solo guys asking that the rub-ber solo classes be spread out more in the program. What I would like to do at the next meeting is establish a running order with the other clubs that runs the same at all clubs, so when riders come in to register, they already know

their class number.

I'm in the middle of planning the Ice Race Banquet. Tickets will be $25 for din-ner and a cash bar. Tentatively we are having it at Billy's Tip'n Inn, 6707 Highland Road, White Lake Township, MI 48383. The date is not set because I'm still wait-ing on sponsor responses, but looking like mid or late April. (date has been set, see page 15 for updates)

Next up is sound. Sound checks are coming to Ice Racing next year, guaranteed, so be prepared. Getting control of sound of our machines will do two things for us as racers, and fans; 1. It is the number one reason why parks, tracks, trails, and events are blocked, canceled and shut down. If the locals can't hear us, can't see us, they won't protest us because we are not causing them a nuisance; 2. For some of the classes where horsepower is king, having controlled sound will tighten up the classes. Mr. Dunn has spoken to me personally on this, and informed me that we will have the proper equipment for testing next year, we will have someone certified at the events to test. After two warnings without a decrease in dB's, the machine will be DQ'd for the weekend.

I know that this will have a huge impact on the White Lake events since we have personal residences overlooking our track on a public lake. If the sound was

WHITE LAKE RACING (White Lake, MI) February 22story by Jeremiah Sherman

You know your racing in White Lake when; there has been record snow falls? In the middle of a blizzard? A thunder and rain storm at the end of February? The track is as smooth as a MX track? Or all of the above? The Saturday event in White Lake went off very well with 120 entries and over 500 spectators for the day. It was a day and evening of tight racing, with main features being heavy in the quad classes. Special thanks to Magnum Distributing, KoldKutter Racing, Fullflight Racing, Streamline Brakes, PowerMAdd, Twin Air, Pivot Works, The White Lake Inn, and surrounding citizens, Gerry and Jen Bell, Nick Why, Plow Guys James Cory and Teddy, Fire Fighter Rob, Alex Galeczka at CSA of Almont MI, which I would put his motor against any builder in the country, and everyone else who chips in.

The day's winners were as follows:

Ice racing the Quad Classes can be somewhat of a roller coaster at times, emotionally and physically. This season has been wheel to wheel all year long, and a few of us still have parts lying in the track. Although we race on "couches with wheels," so says Laidback Lenny, these couches are as fast as most bikes and almost 400 lbs.

So I introduce you to Randy Cox, 42, of White Lake MI. I have had the displeasure of losing to Randy this year several times along with his two brother in laws, John and Tim, all of whom have taken the moniker "Banshee Boys." The four of us, all hailing from the White Lake area, have been banging wheels all season long, and this goes to show, you never know what's going to happen on the track, especially on home ice.

2014 Practice Race Dates To Be Announced

The stage is set for the 450 quad final. I am in the front row with all three Banshee boys. The Green light fires up, and I find myself out front, right next to Rob Steirle, and three Banshees trying to eat my rear wheels. Six laps later, I'm trailing Steirle, and still holding off the Banshee boys, with Randy so close I could slap him on the head and Johnny on him. Last lap, I kept thinking just stick to your line, its working, speed is good, hookup is good, my hands are tingling from the cold, and after six races, not so strong. I went into the last turn tired, overturned, bogged down and had to clutch it, he went for it on the outside checker flag coming, I manage to beat him there. Coming around the lap a down rider, Tim, is throwing his hands up and pointing across the track, I nail the gas cause I think I took the white flag! The loose track at the end of the night, mixed with a very tight finish got him caught up between two of us, when he hit the brakes, it cause him to flip his quad, just after the checkered flag. After a minute he catches his breath, he rides off the track with a broken collar bone and broken hand, and a hard fought 3rd place in a tight class of 12 riders.

After speaking with our sponsor Magnum Distributing and Magic Motorsports. We agreed it was a great idea to award Randy the set of Magnum ATV MX tires that they had donated for the White Lake Ice Races.

Magnum now has its own line of ATV and MX tires that it has been producing over the last year now in order to keep tire costs under control. I spoke with Roger recently at Magnum, he informed me that prices of existing tire products are increasing almost every shipment, and after a lot of time and research, they were able to develop a great set track/trail tires for ATV's and Motorcycles, at a fraction of the cost of their competitors, and transferring that savings to the riders.

So I say thank you to our sponsor, and our riders that support us all. If you would like to ask Randy about the race, crash, and tires, he wont be hard to find. He's racing in Bentley this Sunday.

Story by Terri Sweet, Road Chairperson

On the RoadAgain ...

The Tri City Traveler Turkey has been changed! Please make a note that the September ride that Tri City Travelers does is now going to be held on Sunday, September 28th. Due to a scheduling confl ict at the Crump locati on the Turkey Ride is a week later then originally planned. So please change your calendars.

Red Light, Red Light, Red Light! Is it ever going to turn green? As some of you riders know when we come up to a red light our bikes don't get caught by the traffi c loop to work the magic to turn the light green. So we sit and we wiggle and we go back and forth and we do whatever it takes to get that loop to pick up the metal on the bike.

Recently on Nati onal Geographic, Chad Teachout (MSP) saw a program that suggested putti ng a couple of those super strength magnet under your bike. They can be att ached on the frame and not interfere and they will help get the bike noti ced by those traffi c signal loops. There are a couple websites that you can investi gate that might be of interest: www.instructables.com/id/ Trigger-GREEN-Traffi c-Lights and www.wikihow.com/Trigger-Green-Traffi c-Lights.

Another suggesti ons that was made was to lower the side stand directly over the sensor. SuperStreetBike did a test and it did work. I, personally, would not suggest this acti on as I was always taught not to lower your side stand unless you were done riding. I think this might be a dangerous acti on to take.

It is reported that some of the Department of Transportati on groups are now making sensors that are "motorcycle friendly" and are painti ng a locati on for motorcycles to stop their bikes to catch the sensor.

If anyone has other suggesti ons to help our bikes catch the sensors let me know. I ride a trike and don't have this problem but I would be glad to give other riders the informati on to help them with this problem.

Think Spring! Stay Safe!

under control I would not get the same three complaints I get aft er every event. I love the loud sound of my quad, makes me feel like I'm going faster, even though I'm always in fourth place, and yet my sound alerts my competi -tors that I'm coming and what side I'm trying to pass on. There are a lot of advantages to us getti ng control of sound. Believe it or not, not everyone loves raw loud horsepower. I know it's a crazy thought, but it is true and if we are to survive bureaucracy and scruti ny we need to be out of sight, and unheard.

Lastly and quickly WHERE ARE THE KIDS??? We're seeing less and less kids in the 50's. Less kids mean less in the big classes in the future. So I'll be looking for help on how to get more kids ice racing next year. If you have friends that have sponsors and they ride MX, Enduro, Hare Scrambles, or any other division, why aren't they ice racing? This division allows you, the riders, to possibly win championships in your other divisions and Ice as well without schedule confl ict, and you keep riding all year long! Then you get to say, HEY MISTER SPON-SOR, I WAS POINTS CHAMPION IN MX AND ICE RACING, I PROMOTE YOUR BRAND ALL YEAR LONG!

rider turn out prompt and on schedule as the afternoon sun came out from the clouds to greet everyone. The H&L Racing Bunting’s Sand & Gravel site enjoys some of the best viewing of any track in MI. Most of the track can be seen from the comfort of the parking that goes around most of the track. Basically there’s not a bad seat in the house and the fans come in droves and were treated with an awesome day of racing with many of the best racers in Michigan, including AMA Ice Racer of the Year #25 Allen Rabinette, all of whom put on the best show of the year. One of my favorite things about the West Branch “big track” race is the showing up of #31 Gordy Schopieray and his “Ninja” ice racer! Few are the tracks where he can ride this monster and let her breathe and just the sound of him lighting it up each lap as he diced with Eric O’boyle had the huge crowd roaring!

The sun was just going beyond the very large walls of the pit as 11 of the fastest riders of the day were lining up for the “Combo” race with a

purse of $1400.00 paying down 8 places. It promised to be a barn burner and was for sure! After several laps of intense racing # 93j Danny Koelsh had a little altercation with the snow bank of turn two. AMA Pro Starter Larry Schmitt lined up a staggered restart and off they went again. Near the very end #83j Tiffany Sloan found herself in the same snow bank and was only able to watch the last couple laps where #40j Ben Myers was able to keep the very fast #11 Bryan Bigelow at bay just squeaking over the finish line ahead of him for the win with #25 Allen Rabinette in tow for the third. What a race to end the day! Riders were handed out gift cards from Stevens Cycles instead of trophies with the “little ones “ getting trophies and their cards. Combo riders were paid and Marine Transport were thanked again for their help with extra cash for the combo fund.

H&L Racing’s Chris Liesen and Kerry M. Klug would like to thank each and everyone who helped make this great day possible and the racing community for letting us be a part of your lives. If you’ve seen “Why we ride” you get it. See everyone next year!

DIRTWISE conti nued from page PB

It has been the most absolute miserable winter thus far. I type this out worried that our fi rst event will not happen. March 23 is the date of our fi rst event and it looks grim. No one expected this horrid winter nonsense. The real problem about these deep freeze arcti c conditi ons is I stay at home and buy bike stuff I don’t need. I am deep in debt that matches the snow piled around my driveway. I actually had to shovel my lawn for the dog. So I will salute winter good-bye with a cocked greasy middle fi nger. Hasta La Vista...

So let us explore something more positi ve. My concussion riddled memory may have writt en this before, but who knows? I’m talking about “The Rules”. Not the boring district regurgitated trash that carries over every year, but the rules that we racers abide by. These golden rules earn our right to carry the Man-Card. They are arbitrary and defi nitely slanted in my favor (that’s because I’m writi ng them, not you). They are a work in progress and are always evolving but these are the basics:

• Every hare scramble racer gets a Man-Card because we ride the toughest race, although you 2 hour weenies get a one point deduc-ti on

• Any rider adorned in pink gear or graphics gets bonus points, how-ever any bizarre color combos will lose points… anything mixed with orange

• If your bike is in a sad state of maintenance and yet has fresh plasti c/graphics… loss of 5 points

• Any form of an energy drink logo on gear/bike… Man-Card suspend-ed unti l further noti ce

• All energy drinks are evil toxic poison and real athletes don’t touch it

• Smokers take a 5 point deducti on because you sti nk… deal with it

• Above rule applies to tobacco chewing rednecks as well

• The colors Red, White, and Blue carry bonus points, especially if represented in a fl ag theme

• Conversely, Confederate fl ag graphics incur 10 point deducti on (they’re losers remember)

• Any U.S. military graphics carry 20 points, additi onal 10 for Marines

• Any graphics that incorporate an iron cross, German helmet, swas-ti ka... etc.

On to more serious matt ers, our season looks good. Check our website for up-dates. Remember, we are going back to class lett er identi fi cati on. All three num-ber plates and back of helmet must have your class lett er. They are listed in the rules. Team riders must use the same number on both bikes and transfer one transponder. Please keep your exhaust within the AMA sound limits. This info is on our website as well. This will be enforced this year; I’m not playing.

We have a revised start order this year as well. We now will start by skill sets only. Meaning all A classes at the front, followed by all B classes, and all C classes in the back. No separati on of 2/3 hour classes. I have to say, this is one of the many items that makes our series great. We are rider focused, never the ma-chine. Thrott le on and looking ahead.

NingXia Nitro’s unique formula of pure essential oils and powerful cognitive enhancers help support mental acuity and enhances physical performance. These cognitive enhancers include not only well-known B vitamins, green tea extract, and ginseng; but they also include a proprietary Nitro Alert™ oil blend consisting of vanilla and chocolate oils, yerba mate, spearmint, peppermint, nutmeg, black pepper, wolfberry seed oil, and ribose.

Ribose is a five-carbon sugar that is naturally produced in every cell and is the backbone of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), a fundamental energy compound that drives nearly all chemical reactions in human cells. Although it is a sugar, it is metabolized differently than sucrose or glucose and is absorbed instantly into the bloodstream. Unlike other sugars, excess ribose isn’t converted into fat by the body; instead, it is saved for use in ATP energy production. This vital difference is key to the importance of supplementing; and doing so supports cellular energy levels, energy recovery, and energy reserves. It also supports healthy energy levels in the heart and muscles.

By utilizing Bioenergy Ribose®, Young Living delivers ribose that is: 1. non-GMO; 2. naturally occurring; and 3. Kosher and Halal certified

If that isn’t enough to convince you of the power of this product, Bioenergy Ribose is currently part of the training regimens of many Olympic athletes. These athletes not only undergo extreme physical stress, but they are also limited to natural supplements and subjected to extensive testing. If ribose can help top athletes support their energy levels, just think of what it can do for you.
