Happy Fall!
August and September have flown by so quickly. Our staff members have been working hard athaving a smooth start to the school year.
If you, as a parent, have not requested a user ID for the parent portal to monitor your child’s grades, you may email Ms. Raines at [email protected] or call her at 404-802-4204. If you do not have internet access, please schedule a time to meet with Ms. Raines for assistance. This is an excellent tool for you, the students, and the teachers. We have our “Report Card Night” coming up at our upcoming PTA Meeting on Tuesday, October 15 at 5:30 p.m.
We had a great “Grandparents’ Day” last month. The attendance, food, and presentations were excellent. We want to give a shout out to all that participated and attended. A special shout out to our community volunteers from Hop, Skip, & Serve: Ms. Jong, Mr. Baker, and Mr. Teasley and of course, Mr. Burson.
It is time for the start of our After School Tutoring Program. We will begin on October 22 from 2:45-3:45. Parents please make arrangements to have the students remain after school on each Tuesday for this extra help. This year, we will focus our efforts for after school tutoring on math fluency. Based on our data, our students are struggling with basic math concepts and practices. The after school focus on math is just one of the strategies we are planning to use as an intervention. So, please help us by making sure that your child remains on Tuesdays for that help. Our students in the Gifted & Talented program will have an opportunity to participate in the Robotics Club sponsored by Mrs. Kia Stephens. I am sure she will send more information out. Stay tuned!
Students received their school agendas last week. Please check the agendas weekly (Kindergarten-2nd grade) and nightly (3rd- 5th grade). The teachers will use this as an additional resource and form of communication to you. As a reminder, students are required to maintain these agendas and keep up with them. If the agendas are lost or destroyed, they must be replaced at a cost of $10 to the students. These agendas are textbooks and paid for by the school and must be returned at the end of the school year.
Please help us as we prepare for our first school-wide common assessments. Students will have an opportunity to apply what they have learned over the past weeks in school. Our common assessment schedule: Reading October 8, 2013 Math October 9, 2013 Science October 10. 2013 ELA October 16, 2013 Social Studies October 17, 2013 WriCng October 18, 2013
Please make sure students are well rested the night before and they arrive to school on time. It is always important for the students to do their best.
Please add the following dates to your calendar for our Title Meetings. On Tuesday, October 15 we will review the Title I Budget & School Plan at the following times: 9:00 am and at our PTA Meeting at 5:30 pm. We will provide an additional day on Friday, October 18 at 12:30 pm. If you these dates are not good for you, please let me know and I will meet with you at a time that is convenient for you.
Another important date is our 5th Grade Middle School Transition Meeting with Mr. Brown, the Principal of M. L. King, Jr. Middle School. We invite all 5th grade parents/guardians out to have conversations with Mr. Brown and hear more about what is required to be successful in middle school and the requirements to be promoted to 6th grade. That meeting will take place in the media center on Tuesday, October 22 from 9:45-10:45. Thank you for putting these dates on your calendar.
Also, we are in full implementation of our new procedures for classroom visitation and to volunteer at D. H. Stanton. Please continue to complete the required documents for these activities. We welcome and appreciate you.
We would like to thank you for your positive support and communication. A sound educationcomes from parents, students, school and community working together. Let’s continue thiseffort and have a great year.
Have a great October!!

Assistant Principal’s Message
Did you know that October 6-‐12, 2013 is Fire PrevenBon Week? At D.H. Stanton, being prepared for emergencies is just one of the many ways that we keep your children safe. During the week of October 6th, we will be highlighBng Fire Safety each morning on the morning announcements and parBcipaBng in the state wide fire drill on October 9, 2013. Please conBnue these conversaBons at home, and by the way, do you have a plan at home in the case of a fire? Always think ahead!
The leaves are starBng to drop and fall temperatures are here. That means that soon, students will be wearing jackets, hats, and gloves. Please take a moment to mark your child’s name on the interior of their items. Last cold season, we had nearly fiQy jackets leQ at the school that were never claimed by our students. Marking your child’s name in each item allows the school to be capable of quickly idenBfying who these items belong to so we can return them in a Bmely manner.
Our goal is to reward children for meeBng our expectaBons and making good decisions. Last month, we did just that by hosBng our 2nd annual block party. The students had a blast running and playing, while eaBng good food provided by the Stanton PTA. Thank You, PTA! The music was playing and we even had a raffle. One lucky student won a brand new portable music player. Wow, now these are the good Bmes. This month, we will be celebraBng in style with Arcade Day at D. H. Stanton. We are looking to bring arcade games to the school so all the kids can play video games. Please look for more informaBon and make sure you to help us to help your child make good decisions and great choices. Talk to them daily and ask them what they learned in school.
Be on the lookout for our new basketball court installaBons. Our very own Peoples Town Emmaus House donated $5000.00 to the school to fund the restoraBon of our basketball courts so our kids can play basketball. We are scheduled to have community workers in the school on Saturday October 5, 2013 to finalize the install and paint our courts. We are very excited about this opportunity and very thankful to Emmaus House.
Mr. Thomas Ford
Pre-schoolOur students are adjusting well. Let’s get to know who is in our class. Please take a few minutes to few review peers names with your child. Students are working on letter recognition, number, color and shape. We are also working on IEP daily as mandated by the IEP

Kindergarten
Happy Fall! The kindergarten classes are studying many topics for the month of October. In Reading/Language Arts, we are studying phonemic awareness skills, concepts of print, letters, letter sounds and sight words. In Math, we are studying shapes, number words, calendar skills (days of week, months of the year, seasons, etc.) and numbers (counting, writing and recognizing numbers 0-20). In Science, we are studying living and nonliving things. In Social Studies, we are studying important American symbols and community helpers.
Dual Immersion The Dual Immersion Team is very excited about the progress that children are making in English, as well as in the target language. Most students are already familiar with common Spanish phrases that are useful in practical application, such as, “Como estas? Yo estoy bien, gracias y tu?” (How are you? I’m good thanks and you?) “Quiero ir al bano” (I want to go the bathroom), “Yo quiero agua ” ( I want water), “Estoy feliz, triste o enojado” (I’m happy, sad or upset). For the next few weeks, we will be focusing on shapes, other common phrases and animals, as guided by the Common Core State Standards
Helpful Tips for Reading/Language Arts (Phonemic Awareness)Phonemic Awareness is an essential part of the reading process. These are the areas that we work on in the classroom that you can also work on at home: rhyming (producing rhyming words and recognizing rhyming pictures), blending word parts and phonemes, and detecting beginning and ending sounds.
RemindersOur school is a uniform school. Please have your child to wear the school uniform Monday-Thursday. Please check your child’s homework folder each day for correspondence and homework. Please assist your child with recognizing sight words and completing homework assignments as well as keeping the reading log updated on the homework sheet.

PARENT LIASON NEWS!
Hello Parents! This past month we were delighted to have the wonderful staff from the Atlanta Braves visit D. H. Stanton to volunteer and read to the students. Approximately 19 staff members from Arrow Exterminators came bearing gift baskets full of school supplies for each classroom. While the Pre-K to 3rd grade classrooms enjoyed listening to stories, the 4th and 5th grade students were engaged in career readiness activities, led by our volunteers. This was a great experience for our students and we welcome the continued support of our community partners. For the month of October, in the Parent Center, The Center for Working Families will host their new membership orientation, so please check your child’s folder for the exact date and time. We are also still accepting gently used clothes for our uniform bank as well as Boxtops for fundraising.

Second GradeDear Second Grade Parents,
We have noticed a decrease in the amount of homework being returned. It is important to remember that homework is not simply busy-work assigned to children to keep them occupied at home. Homework assignments and studying serve several educational needs that are essential to receiving a complete education. They provide an opportunity for children to develop self-discipline, study habits, and time management skills. Children can set homework goals and enjoy a feeling of accomplishment when the goals are met. Children learn how to be independent and responsible. They practice taking initiative by beginning projects on their own and studying when necessary. Homework also closes the gap between school and home. Learning should happen at home as well as in school.
There are several types of homework that your child will receive. Practice homework allows kids to review what they covered in class. This increases comprehension of a subject or topic while helping children retain it for longer periods of time. Preparation homework helps children prepare for an activity or in-class assignment. This includes research and brainstorming. Extension homework includes long term assignments such as papers or projects. These assignments should correlate with subjects kids are learning in the classroom.
There are several ways that parents can help their child to succeed at homework. Setting aside a specific time every day can make homework part of a child's daily routine. Find a quiet and distraction-free area that your child can use when doing his or her homework. Review homework assignments with children and provide support and guidance, but be sure not to do the work for them. If assignments are unclear, communicate with the teacher and ask questions. Keep all supplies students may need at home. It also may be helpful to introduce kids to the many resources available that can make homework easier. The library and internet are helpful for researching for reports and projects. Most importantly, parents should provide constant support and encouragement. Demonstrate to children how important homework is by taking an interest and guiding them.
