Words by Jane

Welcome to our quarterly update of

DEVELOP’s latest activities which we

hope you enjoy.

Discover our new online Equality and Diversity Toolkit – an invaluable tool to help

organisations increase their knowledge and understand best practice around equality and diversity issues.

We also tell you about our successful Volunteer Managers Network - an excellent programme

supporting many Volunteer Managers, running and managing volunteer teams in Wiltshire.

Wiltshire Volunteer Centre, run by DEVELOP

promotes volunteering and supports capacity building for organisations through the use of volunteers. We do this by facilitating connections between organisations with volunteer opportunities and people interested in volunteering. We can also offer employee volunteering project management and volunteer resource management for various programs and initiatives – if these are needs in your organisation then let us know.

Read Suzanne’s inspiring story on page 10 as a

DEVELOP Volunteer Mentor. Suzanne’s role

encourages many others to engage in volunteering which can be a fulfilling, rewarding and a life changing experience. We don’t think there is a better way to encourage people into volunteering other than using a volunteer to spread the message.

And finally DEVELOP is supporting organisations on how to measure impact – why not join our next training event on July 1st - 100% of our last attendees recommended our training, so if your organisation wants to learn how to describe it’s impact on the people and communities it serves, then this is the course for you.

Great Outcomes from Melksham Community Project :

Gompels Team Up with Dorothy House to Provide Advice and Information Service

As a result from the Health and Wellbeing

Forums, set up by Melksham Community

Project, DEVELOP and other local agencies,

GOMPELS have teamed up with Dorothy

House in an attempt to provide Melksham

residents with better access to information

about the hospice’s service.

Melksham Community Project holds forums

where charities, local businesses and

medical professionals can get together and

discuss how better work together for the

benefit of patients and the community.

During April a Dorothy House representative

held information and advice sessions at

Gompels in the town centre, being able to

engage with the public about the services

they offer. This consultation was an

opportunity to discover how they could help

you or your family.

Gompels is hoping to have a different charity

or service in store each month to provide

information about their services. Dorothy

House has been the first to be involved with

the scheme.

Sue Eskins the community and outreach

team manager for Dorothy House said:

“This is part of our drive to get more

information into the community so people

who may need us will know exactly what

we can offer. We are pleased to be a part of

this idea and we look forward to seeing and

talking to as many people as possible.”

‘DEVELOP have really supported us in setting up the Health and Wellbeing Forum for Melksham. They have run networking activities promoting partnership work within the group. We are already seeing great results from this work, which includes Gompels the Chemist hosting different charities and services to make them more accessible to the public.’

- Phil McMullen, Melksham Community Project Support Officer

Reaching Communities

Big Lottery Fund, Voluntary Action Swindon and DEVELOP Partner Up to Support Local Organisations

Big Lottery Fund, in partnership with

DEVELOP and Voluntary Action Swindon

(VAS), hosted a unique workshop to

support Wiltshire groups with their

applications to the Reaching Communities

fund.

Charities and local groups had the opportunity to

revise their application draft with Tim Temple, Big

Lottery Fund Funding Officer for the West of

England. They were able to get top tips about their

application and learn about what the funders are

looking for in a project.

The event took place on the 23rd March 2015 at

the Advice & Support Centre in Swindon.

8 Groups from Swindon and the wider Wiltshire

area were able to review their applications in

depth, which were submitted previous to the

event.

This initiative will allow groups to submit better

application for this fund and increase their chances

of success. Following this event groups have been

able to follow up from the commentaries given on

the day with funding advisors from DEVELOP and

VAS.

Events in the Community

I Am Wiltshire:

A Celebration of Diversity

On Wednesday 4th of March DEVELOP, in partnership with Wiltshire Council and other voluntary and community organisations, celebrated a year of work around Equality and Diversity at the I Am Wiltshire Event.

Over 50 people, including representatives from community groups and members of the public, joined the event which took place in Trowbridge, as well as a virtual version in Chippenham, attended by 9 people.

James Moody, Chair of DEVELOP, presented an overview of DEVELOP's Equality work during 2014 - 2015, which has been compiled in the 'I Am Wiltshire: Minority and Multi Faith Community Action Report.'

There was also an opportunity to hear from the work of our partners West Wilts Multi Faith Forum, SCAR and Trowbridge Islamic Cultural Centre.

The keynote speaker Kevin Curley addressed the attendees with his speech 'Giving people a say in the development of public services', where he touched on vital topics for our sector such as The Wiltshire Compact, the Best Value Statutory Guidance, and the Social Value Act. You can read the transcript of Kevin's speech by clicking here.

Wiltshire Council consulted the attendees about their Equalities Objectives for 2015-2016, and people had the chance to raise concerns and express their opinion about these objectives.

Volunteer Managers’ Network

28 Volunteer Managers got together at Bouverie Hall in Pewsey to

share experiences and know-how about their roles on the 4th

February 2015.

The Volunteer Managers’ Network is set up regularly for volunteer

managers to discuss topics such as role agreements, policies and

agreements for volunteers, and investing in volunteers. This is a

unique opportunity to receive support and to share experiences with

other people in similar roles throughout the county.

Volunteer managers from all of Wiltshire had a chance to review and

receive support on these topics:

Help selling new volunteering opportunities and improving

recruitment

Managing difficult situations with volunteers and how to deal

with having to say ‘no’ to a potential volunteer

Updates, guidance and support with the new Do-it platform

“I’ve gained new tools with which to tackle problems in my

organisation—having difficult conversations, good

descriptions for volunteer roles. I also gained new contacts

in the networking sessions and new ideas.”

- Gill Kosmyryk, Calne Community Day Centre

MSV Mentor Supported

Volunteering

My experience as a

Mentor with Volunteer

Centre Wiltshire

By Suzanne McDonald

My name is Suzanne and I am a volunteer mentor. As a mentor I listen to, reassure, encourage and help mentees to set themselves a volunteering goal. Usually their goal is to find suitable local volunteering opportunities, prepare themselves to make an application, attend an interview, and finally start volunteering. I volunteer for about 2-3 hours per week. I feel completely humble and inspired by the people I mentor and their determination to break through into volunteering and make a change in their own and other people's lives. The people I mentor are usually unemployed and are hoping to find paid work in the future. However, if you lack qualifications, suffer from anxiety or doubt that you have any relevant skills or experiences which employers require, volunteering is an excellent way to gain confidence, develop your skills and is often a stepping stone to paid employment. Lack of self confidence and self belief are often the biggest barriers people face when looking for a volunteering opportunity. One way to overcome this is to talk about all the things you can do, special skills you have and experiences that make you unique. Then we look at what sort of volunteering you might like to explore, there are so many different volunteering opportunities in Wiltshire there is always something for everyone. Finding out about suitable volunteering options then leads to filling application forms and preparing

for interviews. The more prepared you are the more confident you feel. Sometimes I go along to the interview too — having someone with you when you feel nervous can really help! There are some truly amazing voluntary organisations locally who are ready to see what you CAN achieve and what you are able to give! In no time at all you are having a try out session or attending a training day and then you have done it ... YOU are a volunteer! The training and support I receive from the team at Volunteer Centre Wiltshire is really excellent and like all volunteers I have learned so much since I started volunteering almost 2 years ago.

Volunteering really is its own reward. Give it a go… Isn't it time YOU felt rewarded?

WE HELP... Groups

find funding

Waste Not Want Not

‘Helping to Create Comfortable Homes’

“The assistance

and support of

DEVELOP has

made fundraising

much less

onerous than it

would normally

be and has

delivered very

positive results.”

- Phil Reade,

Waste Not Want Not

During the twelve years that it has been open WNWN has

been able to cover some 80% of its annual costs from the

sale of goods but needs continuous funding to keep the

cost of stock within reach of people on low income.

Over the last two years WNWN have worked with DEVELOP

providing the organisation with funding useful advice to

assist with its search for funding.

Recently WNWN has secured £1,500 from two of

the suggested sources being Sovereign Housing and the

Jack Lane Foundation. In both cases DEVELOP also assisted

with the application process.

Applying for funds in addition to managing the day to day

responsibilities of a project can be a daunting task.

DEVELOP can help you identify possible sources

of funding and increase your chances of success

with useful tips and know-how.

DEVELOP supported 12 local organisations

with funding support in the last quarter.

WE HELP.. Set up

new groups

Friends of First City

‘The advice for me

was an invaluable

tool. I will also be

approaching

DEVELOP for help

advertising for

volunteers.’

- Hannah Carter, Friends of

First City

Friends of First City’s aim is to prevent people from becoming socially

excluded by offering a befriending service, introducing people to others with

similar interests and offering support to enable people to enjoy activities that

may otherwise not be accessible.

Referred by their CEO, Friends of First City contacted

DEVELOP as a new group looking for a

straightforward answer to their question. Friends of

First City is a registered charity offering a support

network to socially excluded individuals, groups and

families.

Friends of First city approached DEVELOP having

doubts about how to set up their new group. They

had repeatedly received incorrect information from a

number of parties, which had made the process very

unclear.

DEVELOP help them identify essential information

needed for the registration process, including gaps in

their constitution.

“We are now registered, which prior to our

meeting had had many setbacks.”, says

Hannah Carter, Company Secretary of Friends of First

City.

DEVELOP is the one-stop place for group

support in Wiltshire. We can help you set up

your group, and be compliant with current

regulations and good practice.

If you are interested in becoming a

volunteer or for more information,

please contact the company secretary,

Hannah Carter at

Volunteer and Community Groups exist to make a

difference - and they certainly do, but measuring

their impact remains a real challenge for many

charities.

If done well, impact measurement can be a benefit

rather than a burden! Effective monitoring and

impact measurement can make a big difference for

your group or charity when it comes to funding

applications and strategic planning, which is

essential in the current funding climate.

DEVELOP has designed this training course

to help your organisation achieve your

impact measuring goals, and to provide

you with knowledge and tips on how to

use this new information to funding bids.

The next scheduled session for Develop Your Skills

in Measuring Your Impact will be help on the 1st

July 2015, in Trowbridge, venue TBC.

VELOP supported Wiltshire Community Foundation at the Meet the Funder Conference 2014 Representatives from Wiltshire's voluntary and community sector, as well as local and national funders came together on Tuesday the 18th November at the Corn Exchange in Devizes, at the Meet the Funders Conference organised by Wiltshire Community Foundation.

The conference was an opportunity for local organisations and charities to get information and advice

regarding funding directly from the funders. Speakers included Tim Temple from Big Lottery, Emma

Beeston from Lloyds Bank Foundation, Cathy Williams from Comic Relief, and Heidi Yorke from Wiltshire

Community Foundation.

DEVELOP had the opportunity to speak to the presenters and workshop facilitators,
