In 1931 he travelled to Paris, where he was influenced by his
distant cousin Oscar Milosz, a French poet of Lithuanian descent and a Swedenborgian. His first volume of poetry was published in 1934. In 1960 Miłosz emigrated to the United States, and in 1970 he became a U.S. citizen. In 1961 he began a professorship in Polish literature in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of California, Berkeley.

His poetry, including such poetions as „Bells in Winter” (1978), is noted for its classical style and preocupation with philosophical and political issues. His well known essay collection „The Captive Mind” (1953) condemned the accommodation of many polish intellectuals to communism. Critic Helen Vendler wrote that Miłosz’s „Treatise on Poetry” (1957) seemed to her „the most comprehensive and moving poem „ of the latter half of the 20th century. He was awarded the Nobel Price in 1980.

Basia Trzetrzelewska is a Polish singer-songwriter and record producer . She established a successful international recording career featuring characteristically Latin-flavoured Jazz-Pop songs during the late 1980s and early 1990s, particularly in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Japan.

almost two million copies. As a solo artist Basia achieved greatest success in the United States, where she sold over one million units of her debut album. It also brought her the U.S. Top 30 hit „Time and Tide" on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In 1989 her second album, London Warsaw New York, repeated that accomplishment. Both albums topped Billboard's Top Contemporary Jazz Albums, but her second album also became Top Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year even beating the Grammy Award-winning Album of the Year, Back on the Block, from Quincy Jones.
