“Christmas waves a magic wand over the world, and behold; everything is softer and more beautiful.”and behold; everything is softer and more beautiful.”

Not sure what to get the people on your Christmas list this year? Some people will go to great lengths to pick out just the right gift. Most people travel to three different malls and spend hours of their precious time surfing the net. But what if you could shop for all your gifts in one trip? With over 150 businesses and shops to choose from, you are sure to find the right gift for that hard-to-buy-for person on your list! So instead of getting that silly gadget from an online megastore, we have the per-fect alternatives that you can find right in Czech Village & New Bohemia

You could get that hard-to-buy-for person an iPad TV Stand, or better yet, furniture from Bill’s Brothers or Top Drawer!

You can buy them the Corkcicle Ice Whiskey Wedge with a built-in ice cube, or a Growler from Lion Bridge Brewing Company!

You could get that busy person in your life a Toaster Grilled Cheese Bag, but a gift card from Bata’s, Sauce, Sausage Foundry, or Village Meat Market would be so much better! (And maybe they’ll take you along!)

The 2-Wheel Scooter might be a hot item right now, but a skateboard from Eduskate is still the way to go, especially for those who want the real deal, rather than invest in a new fad.

And what would Christmas be without sweet treats? You could give your “Face on a Marshmallow”, or better yet give Forever Chocolate sweets from White Lion Treasures.

The Amazon Echo is a great gift for those who want answers, but what happens if the internet goes down? Consider purchasing a book from NextPage Bookstore instead!

Stop in at Redball Printing and pick out a gift that not only lets people know where you hail from, but shows you’re proud to be a Cedar Rapidian!

Relive the days gone by when you visit Czech Village Antiques, Copper Alligator, and NewBo Mercantile for a variety of memora-bilia and vintage clothing. Stop in the Cherry Building and pick up a gift card at Illumination Healing Arts Cen-ter and give your favorite person the gift of relaxation this holiday season. While you’re there, stop in at Black Earth Gallery and purchase a one-of-a-kind work of art, and Garden Wren for beautiful holiday floral arrangement or yarn to make a cozy scarf. NewBo Market offers a wide variety of vendors to visit for your holiday gifts, in-cluding Furry Friends Boutique and Bark & Bloom. Down the street, Mood Salons is a great choice for a holiday “do,” or for that person on your list who deserves to be spoiled.

The Holiday Season in the Czech Republic and Slovakia

By Jan Stoffer

In the Czech and Slovak Republics, the holiday season begins on December 4 and ends January 6, Epiphany or Three Kings Day. December 4 is St. Barbara’s Day. “Barbara Girls” dressed in white with a veil over their faces, carry bells, rods, and bundles of dried apples as they go from house to house giving children apples and reminding them to behave. At home, a cherry branch is placed in a vase of water in the kitchen. It is a sign of good luck if the branch blooms during the Christmas season. If a girl of marrying age tended the branch, and it blooms on Christmas Eve, she will find her husband within the year. Legend has it that Svatý Mikuláš (Saint Nicholas) and an angel descend from heaven on a golden rope on December 6 to meet the devil on earth. The trio walks the streets of Prague and visits children’s homes. Svatý Mikuláš asks children about their behavior and the angel records their answers in her book. If the report is good, the child will be rewarded with sweets and treats from the angel. If the child has been naughty, the devil, lurking in the background and rattling his chains, will give the child a lump of coal or a potato. Sv. Mikuláš will remind the children that Christmas is a few short weeks away and they must behave themselves or the baby Jesus will not bring them presents on Christmas Eve. December 6 is a feast day for Svatý Mikuláš. Be sure to wish your neighbors and friends a hearty “Veselý den Svatého Mikuláša” (Happy Saint Nicholas Day)! The most important day of the Czech and Slovak holiday season is Christmas Eve, December 24. Dinner is served after the first

star may be seen after sunset. Traditionally, the tablecloth is laid over clean straw, a reminder that Christ was bedded in a manger with straw. The table is set for an even number of guests, an odd number brings bad luck or death. An extra plate is set for an unexpected guest who comes by the house at dinnertime. The nine course dinner includes mushroom soup, sauerkraut, bread with honey, breaded carp fillets, potato salad, fruit, and desserts, such as apple strudel, vanoča, or koláče. Christmas carols are sung, and the family leaves the table at the same time – the first per-son to leave the table after dinner is said to be the first person to die in the coming year. After dinner, the family gathers around the tree. A bowl of coins and fruit is often found under the Christmas tree in a Czech and Slo-vak home. The coins signify good luck and the fruit prosperity and good health for the coming year. Families exchange gifts that evening. Christmas Day is spent attending church services and being with family. On St. Stephen’s Day, December 26, children go caroling and are rewarded with treats from those to whom they sing. On Three King’s Day, also known as Epiphany, young boys dress as the kings and go caroling while writ-ing K+M+B, first initial of the kings, on front doors.

For many, December 24 (Štědrý den) is the most enjoyable day of Christmas holidays. Its Czech name literally means “Generous Day”, probably for the wealth of food that has traditionally been served for Christmas dinner and fed to household and farm animals.

Even poor families would make sure that their plates were full on this one day of the year.

The Christmas tree is decorated with traditional Czech Christmas ornaments in many households and preparations are made for the most festive dinner of the year.

According to one Czech Christ-mas custom, one is supposed to fast all day to see the “golden piglet” (zlaté prasátko) in the evening.

Here are just a few examples of what gingerbread molds might have looked like at a time when gingerbread makers were held in high regard.

The History of GingerbreadBy Jan Stoffer

Honey cookies have been around for hundreds of years. Over time, the honey cookie evolved to become what most of us know as gingerbread. Often thought to be a German tradition, gin-gerbread baking is found throughout Europe. There were sev-eral centers where gingerbread masters went to work, including Bratislava.

Early in its history, gingerbread was baked in monasteries for sacral purposes, on estates, and in peasant households. Addition-ally, there were gingerbread masters who, in the 17th century, had the exclusive rights to make gingerbread, except at Christmas and Easter when everyone was allowed to make gingerbread.

Early molds made from clay were used to bake the gingerbread cakes. As baking developed, wooden carved molds were used. In Bratislava, the art of gingerbread making was closely linked to woodcarving. To be a good gingerbread maker, you also had to be a good woodcarver.

Gingerbread molds came in various shapes and sizes, appropri-ate for the intended receiver. Horses, trumpets, rifles, animals, fairytale characters, dolls were favored among children. Youths and adults preferred heart-shaped gingerbread. Stages, farmer figures, ladies with fans, knights, cavalrymen, fools, devils, death figures, cradles, and several other designs were also popular with consumers. At the height of the gingerbread tradition, sacred images appeared alongside secular shapes. For example, Adam and Eve motifs, the Nativity, Christ on the cross, etc. were also commonly found.

Bratislava became the center of gingerbread making in the Hungarian Empire. The first former Hungarian Empire ginger-bread maker’s guild, The Main Guild Treasury, was established in Bratislava in 1619. The Treasury administered the whole territory of the former Hungarian Empire. Later, many smaller, indepen-dent guilds were established, guaranteeing a high standard and professional approach to gingerbread making. The profession as a whole saw a decline in the late 19th century with the development of confectionery manufacturers which were gradually replacing

the role gingerbread played in the household, and the cheap mass production of iron molds.

Interest in the wooden molds dwindled and finally disappeared. Today, gingerbread is still an important part of Czech and Slovak Christmas tradition. Methods and recipes differ from region to region, as do the shapes and decorations.

Honey Cookies - Medovniky (pronounced: meadow-neecky)Contributed by Jan Stoff er

Ingredients:

500 g all-purpose fl our (110 g equals 1 cup, approx. 4 heaping cups equals 500 g)

125 g honey (slightly over 3oz. or 1/3 cup)

125 g unsalted butt er (slightly over 1/3 cup), melted and cooled

190 g powder sugar (approx. 1 2/3 cup)

2 eggs (let warm to room temp.)

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp ground cloves

1/2 tsp anise (optional)

Directions:

Beat eggs and sugar together, add honey, butt er and spices. Fold in fl our with baking soda and mix into a smooth dough. Chill several hours.

Allow dough to warm to room temperature before rolling it out onto a lightly fl oured surface, 1/4 inch thick. Cut various Christmas motifs with cookie cutt ers.

Place on a dry cookie sheet, brush top with beaten egg and bake in a preheated oven (325-350 F). After you brushed the tops, you may choose to press raisins or nuts (slivered and halved almonds, halved or quartered walnuts or pecans) in the unbaked cookies.Plain cookies may be iced once cooled.

Cookies are baked when you see that they raised a bit and they

become light brown or pink (watch closely, up to 10 min.). Do not overbake.

Quickly remove from baking sheet and put on cookie rack to cool. Store in covered Tupperware for up to a week or so. Store with a piece of bread or apple wrapped in a napkin to assist the softening process.

The Largest Gingerbread House on Record

The Tallest Gingerbread house in the world was unveiled at the Mall of America Nov. 24, 2006. It was built by gingerbread artist, Roger Pelcher. The house was 1,496 square feet and used:

• 14,250 pounds of gingerbread and 4,750 pounds of icing

• 1,800 Hershey’s chocolate bars

• 2,800 Pearson’s Nut Rolls

• 1,200 feet of Twizzlers

• 100 pounds of large-sized Tootsie Rolls

• 300 pounds of Dots

• 100 12″ Whirly Pops

• 100 pounds each of Brach’s Star Brites Mix, Holiday Mix, Crimp Ribbon, Christmas Spicettes and Christmas Nougats; and thousands of candy canes from Farley & Sathers

It took 1,700 working hours in nine days to build this massive 67-foot sweet treat.

The house was dismantled in January 2007. According to a Mall of America spokesperson, more than 225,000 people made their way through the sweet structure during the holiday season.

The largest gingerbread village, according to the Guinness World Records website, consists of 1,003 buildings and was constructed by Jon Lovitch, from the United States, and displayed at the New York Hall of Science in Corona, New York, on Dec. 12, 2014.

This is the second time Lovitch has set this record, and spent almost an entire year building it. The year before he built one with 157 buildings.

The largest gingerbread man weighed 1,435 pounds 3 ounces and was made by IKEA Furuset (Norway) in Oslo, Norway, on Nov. 9, 2009. The giant gingerbread man was baked in one piece, and included wheat flour, sugar, vegetable oil, fat, water, syrup, cinnamon, ginger and salt.

More than 1,800 Hershey chocolate candy bars and 1,200 feet of Twizzlers were used to create this Gingerbread House at Mall of America in 2006.

Season’s Greetings!

The animatronics were donated to the NCSML in 2013 by the Zazza family and will be on display in Czech Village this holiday season.

Animatronics add magic to holiday display

Christmas has always been a magical time for me. The lights that illuminated the houses, the store decorations, the Christmas music that would filter through the air as we looked through store win-dows; these traditions were all a part of the season’s wonder.

Just after Thanksgiving every year, downtown department stores came alive, using animatronics of elves making toys in Santa’s work-shop or Mrs. Claus making cookies.

But as the stores closed or moved to the malls, the popularity of the animatronics dwindled and the tradition faded.

But thanks to the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library, those childhood memories can be relived, through a generous gift made by Sue Zazza Hutchcroft, in honor of her brother Alan Zazza, her parents Mildred and Jack Zazza and her grandparents Milo and Vendelene Simanek.

According to Laura Formanek, director of marketing & communica-tions for the museum, animatronics that were once part of the holi-day window display at Killian’s department store for 20 years, will be displayed this holiday season in the window of the Kosek Building, 87 16th Ave SW.

The museum received Santa, Mrs. Claus and several elves, as a gift from the Zazza family in the summer of 2013.

“The family felt strongly that they belonged to the community and determined that the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library would be good caretakers for them,” she said.

Formanek said animatronics were displayed for the 2013 Christ-mas season in the window of the old Hurych Plumbing and heating building, but the museum did not display them in 2014, because many of the elves needed repairs and due to a lack of a good location for the display.

“This year the NCSML has focused on repairing the mechanicals on several so that they may be displayed once again.”

The elves will be displayed in the Kosek building’s windows, in

Czech Village.

She added that the NCSML’s staff and volunteers will build a stage and backdrop to accommodate the display during the week before Thanksgiving.

“Museum volunteer, George Hill, is checking each animatronic char-acter for proper operation, making repairs as necessary,” she said. “Also, CVB staff member Jack Richardson has committed a few peri-od-correct additions that we will added to the display this year.”

Formanek said that once the display opens, most likely around Thanksgiving, the display will be operating daily from noon until 9 pm.

stocking stuffers!Happy Holidays,

from all of us at Sauce!

Remember when we were little and we would all pile in the fam-ily car to go downtown for the holiday parade.

Shivering in the cold, we would wait for what seemed like hours, until Santa passed by and we would jump up and down hoping he would wave to us. And while Mom and Dad went shopping (secretly, of course), we would stand in line and pa-tiently wait our turn to tell Santa what we wanted for Christmas. After we all had the chance to assure Santa we had been good and deserved the presents we requested, we started the long walk to our car, but not before we stopped at each store window to marvel at the colorful displays. Magical, to say the least.

Czech Village/New Bohemia Main Street will be doing its best to keep that magic alive with Window Wonderland. Beginning Nov. 28, Small Business Saturday, business owners will showcase their creative side by transforming their storefronts to capture the whimsy and wonder of the holiday season. Visitors are invited to cast votes for their favorites inside participating businesses until Dec. 20.

Small Business Saturday is a great day to kick off your holiday shopping and support locally owned small businesses. Avoid the Black Friday lines and Shop Small Business Saturday for special giveaways, discounts, and friendly service from over 150 specialty shops, restaurants, and artisans.

Deck the District is one weekend celebration you will not want to miss! It begins with the Svaty Mikulas Day and Tree Lighting, Friday Dec. 4 at 6:30 pm inside the Artisan’s Sanctuary, 45 16th Ave. SW, in Czech Village.

Join Svaty Mikulas, the Angel and Devil for a traditional Czech/Slovak kick-off to the holidays. There will be singing by the Czech Heritage Singers and a short presentation on the customs and traditions of the Czech/Slovak Christmas. Cookies and hot cocoa will be served.

The celebration continues Saturday, Dec. 5 with the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library’s Old World Christmas Mar-ket. Shop for gifts by selected artisans and enjoy ethnic food and seasonal treats. Take a horse and wagon ride, bring the kids for free holiday craft activities, and stop for a visit with Svatý Mikuláš (St. Nicholas) and friends. Enjoy free admission to the galleries, hear live music, and more. The Museum Guild of the NCSML will also hold its Annual Cookie Walk.

Deck the District Flea Market will be held from 10 am to 5 pm at 95 16th Ave SW (the former Smuggler’s Wharf) and Sunday Dec. 6, from 10 am to 4 pm. Find one-of-a-kind gifts and holiday decor from a variety of vendors.

The Artisan’s Sanctuary will host Deck the Halls Ice Sculpture competition Saturday and Sunday 1-5pm. Artists will transform 300lb blocks of ice into beautiful creations.

Voting continues for the best storefront window design. Check out the creative displays in the Window Wonderland contest.
