DEAR COLLEAGUES AND FRIENDS,

On behalf of the European Federation of Cytology Societies (EFCS) and Polish Society of Patho-logists (PSP) we are pleased to invite you for the 43rd European Congress of Cytology from 3-6 October 2021 in Wroclaw, Poland. Wroclaw which is located in the centre of Europe and South-West Poland is easily connected by plane, motorways and trains with other important European cities.

Despite severe destructions during WW II, the city has a rich multicultural heritage and numerous monuments. Currently, it is presented as the meeting and business place and was awarded the European Capital of Culture in 2016 and 2012 UEFA European Championship. We are deeply convin-ced that you will have an opportunity to discover the beauty, intellectual values and unusual cultural atmosphere of our and neighbouring cities. Moreover, rich and exciting cultural activities are also planned.

We propose to meet you in Centennial Hall, a part of UNESCO human heritage place, to practice, teach and study cytology. The Polish and International Scientific Committee prepared a balanced and interesting program covering different cytology aspects, relationship to ancillary and molecular techniques. Plenary lectures, symposia, round-table discussions, oral communications, workshops, posters and industrial expositions are planned. Companion-meetings of different European and in-ternational organisations will be present.

You will also find a wide range of interesting topics and will have an opportunity to present your own experience and expertise.We wait for you!

An increasing use of minimally invasive diagnostic procedures has resulted in better acceptance of FNAC as the first-line exami-nation or as a complementary tool to CNB in the diagnosis of soft tissue tumors. The best approach to a successful diagnostic evaluation of soft tissue lesions is to combine clinical data and radiographic findings with the morphology interpretation that should be accomplished with the aid of supportive ancillary techniques. Multidisciplinary management of soft tissue neoplasm favorably influence outcomes for patients suffering from sarcoma.

15:30 - 16:30Workshop ROSERapid On-site Evaluation (ROSE) of Fine Needle Aspirations: current practice, challenges and successesThis workshop will be a combination of a 45 mi-nute didactic lecture on the operational process of ROSE in evaluation of FNA’s. The participants will lwill learn key cytomorphologic features to assess for adequacy of these specimens in the commonest sites such as lung and pancreas. Focus will also be placed on ancillary testing while using ROSE during this lecture. This will be followed by a distribution of study sets from lung cytology for the participants to review common and some uncommon lesions which

undergo ROSE for adequacy assessment. The faculty will facilitate this portion of the workshop with time available for the partici-pants to ask questions regarding cases that they are reviewing on the microscopes.

Cytopathologist as well as the clinicians are much accustomed to the cytologic interpre-tations labeled as “Atypical” or “Neoplasm”. Some believe, that these term “atypical” reflects “ambiguity” on the part of the cytopathologist and may pose management dilemmas. Howe-ver, most agree that use of the terms “Atypi-cal” and “Neoplasm” besides the controversy that surrounds them; are diagnoses that can answer clinically relevant inquiries leading to effective patient management. Therefore, most cytologic classifications schemes employ the terms “Atypical” and “Neoplasm” as definite diagnostic categories with associated risk of neoplasia and recommendations for patient management. The Paris System for Reporting Urinary Cytology has introduced a completely new paradigm for detection of bladder cancer by urine cytology. This system concentrated on defining morpholo-gical characteristics of the most clinically signifi-cant form of bladder cancer, high grade urothelial carcinoma. This new approach has been widely accepted throughout the world, and has become part of the daily practice of cytology. Considering that the first edition of The Paris System (TPS) introduced a new model of urinary cytodiagnosis, it was apparent that there would be a need for a verification and expansion of initial material and data. Based on evolving knowledge and newly published data, a second edition of The Paris System for Reporting Urinary Cytology (TPS2.0) has been developed. This seminar will discuss what changes, addition and amendments have been introduced in the TPS2.0.

The session is to be run by the three experienced UK based cytologists. It will be a mix of cytology and relevant histology and discussion of the literature as relevant to the cases. The speakers have reported cervical cytology for many years, and will draw on their experience for these cases. The UK has one of the most established cervical cancer screening programmes, yet some 3000 women still develop cervical cancer each year in the UK. Cytological biopsy interpretation of the lung

The workshops will start with a lecture followed

up by a practical part based on a microscopical training. The main topic is the diagnosis of diffe-rent types of primary and metastatic lungs can-cer. Many examples of common, primary lungs cancers will be presented but also difficult to dia-gnose cases which need a detailed morphological criteria and sometimes immunocytochemistry will be mentioned. The diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancer is not enough to make therapeutical decisions. On chosen examples the criteria for qualifying cytological material for research with molecular biology techniques in order to assess predictive factors and an example of PD-L1 expression evaluation in a cytological specimen will be discussed. Apart from cancer changes we will also elaborate inflammatory lesions in the material from pulmonary cytology.

Cytodiagnostic categories will be the center of the discussion with all the key features of the most common benign and malignant lesions. There are many things we need to learn. We will probably spends much time on the «gray-zone lesions» for both short lesson and microscopic slide-based workshop using PowerPoint. For instence, cytomorpholo-gic appearance of so-called endometrial glan-dular and stromal breakdown (EGBD) which is thought to be difficult tasks. In the current cir-cumustances as remote setting, unfortunately, we are unable to circulate high quality cellular glass-slide (mostly from LBC sample and direct endometrial smear, stained with Papanicolaou method) from different institutions of benign, borderline and malignant endometrial lesions. Nevertheless, we hope to be able to pick up and present some of the typical cellular images in „Case Presentation” using PowerPoint.

This workshop starts with three short intro-ductory remarks, including the discourse on 1) the concepts of cervical cancer screening in the era of HPV vaccination, 2) introduction to the HPV tests applicable in population-based screening, and finally, 3) describing the HPV screening program in Finland, of which the problem cases have been selected for this Workshop.
