Each of the exhibit cases offers a hint at the wealth of materials that could be presented for each theme: “Access to Mount Athos” includes a copy of a diamonitirion or “visa” required for a visit, as well as books that had to be stamped by officials before they could leave the Holy Mount. “Artists and Scholars” displays works of a few of the researchers drawn to the riches of Athos in a variety of scholarly disciplines. “Monks and Pilgrims” offers a glimpse of the life of both–including how the monks themselves are “travelers,” abiding a while on the Holy Mount. “Royal Patronage” addresses the ties between Eastern Orthodox rulers and Mount Athos; “Women and Mount Athos” features some of the women who have ventured on or near the monastic republic; “Invaders and Plunderers” looks at both external regimes exerting influence on the Holy Mount and what has been taken from Mount Athos. “The Monasteries of Mount Athos” provides some history on each of the 20 major monasteries, and finally, there is a case devoted to Hilandar Monastery and the rich resources about it here at The Ohio State University in the HRL, thanks to Father Mitrofan and the Monks of Hilandar Monastery, the Very Rev. Dr. Mateja Matejic (professor emeritus, OSU Slavic), and the Hilandar Research Project. The images in this exhibit include some from a traveling exhibit presented to the HRL in 1998 on the occasion of the 4th International Hilandar Con- ference by Milo{ Lon~ar and Father Mitrofan, members of the Executive Board of the International Committee for the Celebration of the 800th Anniversary of Hilandar Monastery (Beograd, Serbia). The Beograd exhibit was curated by Mirko Kova~evi}, who, with Slavomir Mateji}, took the photographs. Slobodan Bari {i} was the assistant curator, and the technical assistants were Goran Milovanovi }, Milan Djordjevi }, and Milo{ Kova~evi }. Nikola Dudi } created the maps. The Mount Athos exhibit is open to visitors, students, faculty, and staff from May 15th until September 8th. The Gallery is located on the first floor (Oval entrance) of the OSU Thompson Library. The hours are Monday- Friday 10am to 4pm, and weekends from 12pm to 4pm. We are in the final stages of pre-paration for both the 2013 MSSI andthe 6th International Hilandar Con-ference. Updates on both are foundin this issue. Of course, our usualactivities continue unabated. On May 1, M.A. “Pasha” Johnsoncompleted her first year as the HRLAssociate Curator. In this short time,she has made an immediate, posi-

tive, and highly visible impact. In addition to the current majorexhibit she has curated, Travelers to and from Mount Athos,there are two other important initiatives for which she is respon-sible: ScriptoriaSlavica, the HRL blog http://library.osu.edu/blogs/medieval-slavic/, and access to more complete infor-mation about the HRL and RCMSS and our available resourcesat www.go.osu.edu/Hilandar.

The blog offers information about the HRL/RCMSS andother “news” pertaining to medieval Slavic and manuscriptsin a much more timely manner. The second website listed aboveis a “gateway” to additional information: I especially appre-ciate the “Research Projects” page. Here, scholars can find moredetailed descriptions of several Hilandar zbornici “collections/miscellanies” dating to the 14th-15th centuries. We invite schol-arly experts to review these descriptions and share their com-ments with us. In this way, these scholars will contribute to thecreation of better and more accurate finding aids to such Hilan-dar manuscripts. We hope to make these and other more com-plete descriptions of the Hilandar Slavic manuscripts available

online, with appropriate acknowledgment of the contributionsof each scholar to these descriptions.

These websites also provide information and access to otherOSU Libraries collections, services, materials, ways of do-nating, etc. The “Donate” page is also appreciated: in responseto several requests, in this issue I discuss the different waysin which donations can be made to the HRL and RCMSS.

The HRL loaned original manuscript material to the AllenMemorial Art Museum of Oberlin College for their exhibitIlluminating Faith in the Russian Old Believer Tradition(see http://oberlin.edu/amam/IlluminatingFaith.html). The ex-hibit may be viewed in the Ripin Print Gallery January 29-July31, 2013. The curator of the exhibit, Dr. Liliana Milkova,visited the HRL in October.

We have had many visitors since the last newsletter, includ-ing: four prospective graduate students to the Slavic Depart-ment and several classes, such as an Intermediate Modern Greekclass taught by OSU Classics professor Christopher Brown.Other visitors of note included Father Platon Jovi} from Serbia,who was accompanied by our longtime supporter, Nikola Bo-rota, and the V. Rev. Archimandrite Leontije Alavanja of St.Mark’s Monastery in Lorain, Ohio. They were escorted to theHRL by George R. Popovich of Columbus. Olga Mladenova(University of Calgary, Canada), who was at OSU to present the16th Annual Memorial Naylor Lecture in March, also spent sometime researching microfilms of “Damaskin” manuscripts.

We were pleasantly surprised in early May by the visit ofRobert D. Gross and his mother, Wanda Gross. Robert wasone of our GRAs almost 25 years ago (PhD in Geography, 1991).He had traveled from his home in the state of Washington to at-tend the graduation of his son, David Lee Goodwin (BA cumlaude in Film Studies with a minor in Video Arts). David’smother, Brenda Goodwin, works in the OSU Libraries TechCenter and was so very helpful with the HRL’s “Fruits of Devo-tion” Exhibit of 2011 and the current “Travelers to Mt. Athos”exhibit. We also had a visit from Nataša Kaurin-Kara~a, ourwonderful GA from 2001 to 2006. She and her husband, Igor,continue to live and work at Oklahoma State University in Still-water, Oklahoma.

We were especially pleased by the visit of Cissy (Marica)Rebich, General Manager of the Serb National Federation (SNF).She wished to see and understand the history and relationshipbetween the SNF, American Srbobran (the organ of the SNF),and the Hilandar Research Project (the forerunner to the HRL/RCMSS). We discussed our lengthy history and relationship. Iexpressed our gratitude for SNF’s support, which was critical tothe establishment of the HRL/RCMSS. We are forever grate-ful to Robert Rade Stone, former Supreme President of theSNF, and to American Srbobran, as well as to the many NorthAmerican Serbs, their churches and organizations, for helping usreach the goals necessary to firmly establish the “Hilandar En-dowment.” With their support, the support of many others, andthe ongoing support of still others, this endowment producesan annual income that helps support both the HRL and RCMSS.

Walter D. Borojevich and his daughter, Mary Borojevich,LT USN (ret.), also dropped by. Mary is well known for her workwith children in Bosnia and Serbia, where she typically spendssix months a year as a Board Member of the organization, Cher-ish Our Children, which seeks to improve the lives of at-riskand vulnerable children there.

In April, I was invited by the V. Rev. Dragoljub Malich of St.Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church in Monroeville, PA, to makea presentation on the significance of Hilandar Monastery forthe purpose of raising awareness and funds to restore HilandarMonastery after its devastating fire of March 4, 2004. The eventwas advertised in American Srbobran and in other nearby par-ishes. As a result, several hundred people stayed for thispresentation after vespers, including Rt. Rev. Bishop Mitrophan(Kodi}), Eastern American Diocese of the Serbian OrthodoxChurch, and guest clergy Fr. Milan Medakovich (Holy As-cension Serbian Orthodox Church, Youngwood, PA), V. Rev.Adam Yonitch (US Air Force chaplain, ret.), and Fr. DraganZari} (St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, Clearwater, FL).Portions of my presentation, as well as several pictures takenduring this event by Robert Marshall of the parish, con-

tinue to be accessible on the website of St. Nicholas http://stnicholasmonroeville.org/archive.html. I enjoyed the visit andexperience greatly and thank Fr. Malich and his parishioners fortheir hospitality, enthusiasm, and generous support of HilandarMonastery.

I was greatly saddened to learn of the passing of BishopHrizostom (Stoli}) of @i~a on December 18, 2012. I first methim in 1971, when my father and I photographed nearly 700 Slavicmanuscripts in the manuscript library of Hilandar Monastery. Atthat time, he was Hilandar’s librarian. We certainly kept him busy

carrying manuscripts back and forth, as we took approximately125,000 photographs in just six weeks. He was the only monk inHilandar at that time to have lived in the US. He had been a semi-narian at the Holy Trinity Seminary, Jordanville, NY, and later ahieromonk serving Chicago-area parishes. He left the US to be-come a hieromonk in Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos, wherehe was twice elected the “First” (protos) of the governing bodyof the Holy Mount. In 1988, the Synod of the Serbian OrthodoxChurch made him Bishop of the Western American Diocese inNorth America, where he served until 1992, returning that yearto Serbia to become first the Bishop of Banat, and eleven yearslater in 2003, Bishop of @i~a. I last saw him in 2002 at the 5thInternational Hilandar Conference in Serbia.

Finally, I wish to express sincerest gratitude to the Bulgarianjournal Palaeobulgarica for publishing a festschrift in my honorin volume 36, issues 3 and 4 (2012). I thank all who contributed toit, as well as all those who sent me messages and congratulations,wishing me “many more years.” It is certainly my hope and intentto work for several more years.

I have been privileged to work with the generous under-standing and support of many administrators and colleaguesat an active center of teaching and learning, The Ohio StateUniversity. I have been able to work with materials about whichI am passionate, both in terms of preservation through refor-matting and promotion through teaching and research. Thesemanuscripts are the primary means by which I and the worldcan engage a cultural legacy that I have found continuallyvibrant and fascinating. With colleagues here and throughoutthe world, I am fortunate and privileged to be able to share myheritage, interests, insights, and passions, constantly renew-ing and expanding them. With students and graduate students,I can re-visit, re-examine and re-imagine this past. And withmy scholarly efforts, I can hope to contribute to the future. Forall this, I am most grateful.

Old Rite in Late TsaristRussia: Documents of

the Moscow OldRitualists in the Pimen

In this feature, Cyrillic Manuscript Heritageasks researchers who have used the HilandarResearch Library in the past year, whetherin person or through copies received, to de-scribe their experiences and work. Scholarswho wish to contribute items may send themto CMH.

Since the early 16th century, the ThirdRome Doctrine claimed that MuscoviteRussia inherited the legacy of the RomanEmpire following the collapse of the Byz-antine Empire in 1453. In this worldview,the Russian people and the Russian statebecame not only the New Rome, but alsoprotectors of the one true, uncorruptedChristian faith. As such, the Russian peopleand their faith were the final bastion ofChristianity until the End Times.

However, by the middle of theseventeenth century, Russia’s ThirdRome fell into chaos as the Churchreforms introduced by PatriarchNikon in 1656-1666 soon led to theraskol, or schism, of the RussianOrthodox Church. Due to the out-cry against the reforms by manylaity and spiritual leaders through-out Muscovite Russia—who claimedthat the reforms invalidated and cor-rupted the purity and legacy of Rus-sia’s Third Rome—the raskol re-sulted in the formation of the reli-gious group that came to be knownas Old Believers (staroobriadtsy).It is important to note that while thisgroup is more commonly referred to inEnglish as “Old Believers,” the Russianterm staroobriadtsy is more properlytranslated as “Old Ritualists.” This is animportant distinction in understanding theorigins and history of the staroobriadtsymovement. Namely, those who recognizedthemselves as staroobriadtsy maintained

dogmatic orthodoxy with the Russian Or-thodox Church but objected to changes inrituals and the introduction of new spell-ings in liturgical books. Therefore, I usethe more popular term “Old Believers”and the proper term “Old Ritualists” in-terchangeably and similarly refer to thegeneral movement as either the “Old Be-lief” or “Old Rite.”

The adherents of the Old Rite per-meated all levels of Russian society, par-ticularly the tradesmen and merchants oflarge cities such as Moscow. In con-trast to those Old Believers who soughtseclusion amongst Russia’s frontiersand wilderness, these Old Believerssought a means to maintain their liveli-hoods and businesses, integrating into theaffairs of Russian society while re-maining in the Old Rite. In turn, becauseof their public presence, these urban OldBelievers became easier targets for anypotential oppression against the Old Riteas a whole. However, over the course ofthe late eighteenth through the early twen-tieth century, the Moscow Old Believersgradually became some of the city’s mostsuccessful merchants and business own-ers, despite continuous challenges by tsa-rist and Russian Church authorities. Byremaining in their professions, however,the Moscow Old Believers participatedin two vastly different ideological and cul-

tural worlds—the perceived spirituallypure Old Rite and the rapidly changingworld of Late Tsarist Russia. Ultimately,a major goal for the groups of MuscoviteOld Believers in the centuries after theraskol was to find a means to embody anddefend their spiritual and moral ideals aschampions of the Old Rite and the Third

Rome Doctrine while remaining activemembers of Muscovite and Russian So-ciety.

Recently, I defended my doctoral dis-sertation (Ohio State University, 2012)in which I examine the specific MoscowOld Believer community that developedaround Rogozhskoe Cemetery and theirattempts to develop a spiritual and physi-cal embodiment of an Old Rite HolyMoscow that upheld their understandingof the Third Rome Doctrine. Named forthe designated burial site for the priestly(popovtsy) Old Believers during the Mos-cow Plague in 1771, Rogozhskoe Cemeterywas built and shaped as a representationof the priestly Muscovite Old Believers’ideal Old Rite community in the years anddecades following its founding.

I completed my dissertation by draw-ing primarily from a collection of archi-val material held in the Russian State Li-brary that included documents on the dailyfunctions of the community, their inter-nal organization, and their finances. How-ever, with the inclusion of published docu-ments, articles, and other works by theRogozhskoe Old Believers, many foundin the HRL’s Pimen Sofronov Collection,my dissertation explored how Rogozh-skoe Cemetery became a physical andideological representation of thecommunity’s attempt to create a “Holy

Moscow” in their understanding of theThird Rome Doctrine. Furthermore, myresearch allowed me to explore how theRogozhskoe community envisioned theirHoly Moscow as a part of two worlds: acommunity devoted to their shared faithin the Old Rite and as a model Christiancommunity within the Russian Empire.

From my research, it became clear thatthat Rogozhskoe Cemetery served as anadaptable physical and ideological em-bodiment of the Rogozhskoe Old Be-lievers’ own desires to restore the Mos-cow of the Third Rome Doctrine. TheirHoly Moscow was by no means a staticconcept, but rather one that the Rogozh-skoe Old Believers actively and purpose-fully adjusted throughout their history todefine themselves spiritually, morally,culturally, economically, and sociallywithin the Old Rite and Russian Empire.Throughout, however, their understandingof Holy Moscow encouraged them to up-hold their devotion to the Old Rite andserved as a sacred boundary with the out-side world.

While documents from the Rogozh-skoe Archive at the Russian State Libraryformed the backbone of my research, thebooks and archives held in the HRL Sofro-nov Collection proved vital to develop-ing my dissertation arguments. Of particu-lar note, the various materials from theSofronov Collection were not only rare,but often gave a very strong look into thespiritual life of the Rogozhskoe commu-nity. This proved extremely vital to ex-plaining how the Rogozhskoe Old Believ-ers understood and defined their faith inthe Late Tsarist Period as Russia rapidlychanged around the community. Ulti-mately, the materials pertaining to the de-cades from the 1860s through 1910 pro-vided a unique look at the internal struggleof faith in arguably the most influentialOld Believer community in Moscow andRussia at a critical moment in the historyof Russia and the Old Rite.

Of the items I used from the SofronovCollection, two particular pieces stoodout. The first was an independently boundcollection of articles composed by themid-nineteenth-century state-sponsoredhistorian of the Old Rite, Nikolai Subbotin(currently catalogued by HRL under Sub-botin’s works). A severe critic of all ras-kolniki (“schismatics”), Subbotin never-theless collected numerous documentsconfiscated from the Rogozhskoe com-munity by tsarist and police officials. Ofparticular note, one such document thatSubbotin obtained was a famous pieceoriginally distributed to the Rogozhskoecommunity, known as the Okruzhnoe po-

slanie Rossiiskikh arkhipastirei Belo-krinitskoi ierarkhii or, “The Encyclicalof Russian Archbishops of the Belokri-nitskaia Hierarchy.” Authored in Febru-ary 1862 by one of Rogozhskoe’s librar-ians and celebrated dogmatists, I. G.Kabanov under the pseudonym “Xenos,”the Okruzhnoe poslanie specifically re-sponded to criticisms of the recently cre-ated Old Rite Church hierarchy that hadbeen founded in the Austrian Empire withdirect support from Rogozhskoe’s mer-chantry. Namely, the issue of the legiti-macy of such a hierarchy became a criti-cal focal point for the Rogozhskoe OldBelievers’ understanding of their faith.The Okruzhnoe poslanie provided excel-lent insight into the internal debates overnot only how the community viewed them-selves as part of the Old Rite, but also howto reconcile their position within thegreater world of Christendom.

The second major work from the So-fronov Collection that proved extremelyuseful was a rare original publication ofVypiski iz Sviashchennago i sviatoote-cheskago pisaniia, i tvorenii sviatykhottsov i uchitelei tserkov, or “Excerptsfrom the Holy and Venerable Writings andWorks of the Holy Fathers and Teachersof the Church,” published in 1910 by Feo-dor Permiakov. Within the Old Rite move-ment, some of the primary disagreementswith the Nikonian Reforms centered onmaking the sign of the cross with threefingers rather than two, and the editingof all Russian liturgical books to conformto the contemporary Greek books, whichincluded the changing of the spelling of“Jesus” from Isus to Iisus. A highly sig-nificant and rare published work, Permia-kov’s Vypiski reveals how these same is-sues remained at the core of the Old Riteeven in the early twentieth century. Spe-cifically, the Vypiski includes a numberof chapters on Old Believer teachings andunderstanding of many issues includingthe spelling of “Jesus,” the proper num-ber of fingers used in making the sign ofthe cross, “On the Errors of the GreekChurch,” “On Drinking or Dining withHeretics,” “On Beards,” “Cutting Hair,”and many other issues. While Permiakovhimself belonged to the “priestless” (bes-popovtsy) branch of Muscovite Old Be-lievers, who were based in the MoscowPreobrazhenskoe Cemetery, it was oneof Rogozhskoe’s most famous members

The collaboration be-tween author and publisher from the twodiffering branches of the Old Rite em-phasizes the importance of such a work.Published only five years after NicholasII granted religious toleration for the OldRite in 1905, the Vypiski reveals a deter-mined effort by the Moscow Old Believ-ers to not only publish, but define theirdisagreements with the Russian OrthodoxChurch during what many Old Believerssaw as an opportunity to express theirfaith openly. Ultimately, these materials in the So-fronov Collection provided critical in-sight into the spiritual mindset of Old Ritecommunities such as Rogozhskoe Cem-etery. The Okruzhnoe poslanie and theVypiski, both of which were only recentlyfound and made accessible as part of theSofronov Collection, proved vital to com-plement my research in Moscow, but alsoto provide a more complete picture of thevery important Rogozhskoe communityas they attempted to define themselvesin a volatile period in Russia’s history.

The OSU Libraries held its final openhouse of the academic school year, theEarly Modern Printed Book Open House,on Wednesday, April 3rd, which was or-ganized by Amanda Gluibizzi, Fine ArtsLibrarian, Eric J. Johnson, Curator of EarlyBooks and Manuscripts, and MelanieMcGurr, Instruction and Access Librar-ian for Special Collections. The organiz-ers described the Open House as “prima-rily featured books, pamphlets, art and ar-chitectural treatises, and travel itinerariesin English, Latin, German, French, Italian,and Spanish. Items with substantial visualmaterial that date from the 1400s to the

19th century from OSUL’s university-wide collections were available for view-ing. Among the artists and authors in-cluded were Albrecht Durër, GiorgioVasari, Andrea Palladio, Giovanni Battis-ta Piranesi, Peter Paul Rubens, WilliamBlake, and many more. Subjects includedHistory, English, Architecture, Entomol-ogy, Herbology, Astrology, and more.” The organizers graciously invited theHRL to participate in their Open Housethis semester. Hilandar displayed five ofits original Russian Early Printed Books,which were donated by Olga V. Karpov,Edward Kasinec, Alex Rabinovich, aswell as its one older Greek volume. A 19th-century Romanian printed book, the “Bu-gariu Molitvenik,” donated by Dehliaand John Negulesco, and the rare 18th-

RCMSS SupportsNational and LocalConferences in 2013

RCMSS helped support two Slavicconferences this spring. The first, heldon March 8-9 at Georgetown Universityin Washington, DC, was the 5th biennialconference of the Association for theStudy of Eastern Christian History andCulture (ASEC). This year’s theme was“Antecedents and Subsequents of IosifVolotsky: Exploring Eastern ChristianConcerns,” in anticipation of the 500thanniversary (2015) of the death of Volot-sky, an influential religious thinker andfounder of Russia’s famous VolokolamskMonastery. Georgetown professor of his-tory David Goldfrank, a Iosif Volotskyspecialist, organized an intense two daysof panels and programs of theological,philosophical, and historical topics re-lating to Eastern Orthodoxy. M.A. “Pa-sha” Johnson presented on digitized re-sources on religious debate in the HRL,highlighting items from the HRL PimenSofronov Collection (including thosementioned on page 5). There were also anumber of longtime HRL/RCMSS friendsand associates in attendance whose namesare familiar to CMH readers: AlexanderAngelov (MSSI 2006), Wojciech Belt-kiewicz (MSSI 2003), Natasha Ermolaev(MSSI 2001), and Jennifer Spock (MSSIguest lecturer); Eve Levin, Don Ostrow-ski and Isolde Thyret (4th Hilandar Con-ference); and Elizabeth Zelensky (5thHilandar Conference).

Congratulations to Mario RodríguezPolo (MSSI 2008) on successfully de-fending his dissertation, “Análisis Diacró-nica del ‘Jurodstvo’ (‘Locos de Cristo’)como Fenómeno Sociocultural Ruso”/‘A Diachronic Analysis of “Iurodstvo”(“Fools for Christ”) as a SocioculturalPhenomenon of Russia,’ at the UniversityComplutense of Madrid, Spain, in De-cember 2012. The dissertation, formallyaccepted in 2013, was directed by JuanAntonio Álvarez-Pedrosa Núñez (Uni-versity of Madrid) and Matilde CasasOlea (University of Granada; MSSI 1999),both of whom are largely responsible forthe cooperative arrangements betweenSpain’s Slavic medievalists and RCMSSand the HRL.

Mario reports that he was happy to fin-ish such a long project and felt especiallygrateful to the HRL staff for their sup-port and guidance and the opportunity todo research in the HRL. He held an in-ternship last year at the United Nations;after which he worked in the IntegrationCenter for foreigners in Prague. Mariorecently received an offer from PalackyUniversity in Olomouc, Czech Repub-lic, and will be conducting research andteaching in its anthropology department.

Two other members of his commit-tee are also our friends and colleagues,Enrique Santos Marinas (MSSI 2001)and Inés García de la Puente (MSSI2003). Enrique is now a professor at theUniversity of Madrid, while Inés conti-nues her research and instruction at theUniversity of St. Gallen (Switzerland).

Isabel Arranz del Riego (MSSI2008) has often accompaniedMario on his journeys and is her-self close to finishing her disser-tation. We look forward to hear-ing of her defense.

We also have recent news aboutPatricia González Almarcha(MSSI 2006). We congratulate heron the publication of her disserta-tion, ‘The Incorporation of the Say-ings of Menander into the Medi-eval Slavic Cultural Tradition.’ Shealso tells us she may be offered a

teaching position by the AECID (SpanishAgency for International Cooperation) toteach Spanish in Belgrade, Serbia.

RCMSS also contributed to the Mid-west Slavic Conference, organized by theOSU Center for Slavic and East EuropeanStudies and the Midwest Slavic Associa-tion, April 5-7. Yana Hashamova, SlavicCenter director, noted that there were 28panels of papers with participants from27 institutions. Among them were MSSIguest lecturer David Birnbaum (Pitts-burgh) and his students Sam Depretis,Erin Harrington, and Elise Thorsen,who presented on Digital Humanities andRussian texts; and OSU Slavic graduatesLjiljana Ðura{kovi} (MSSI 2003), An-drew Kier (RCMSS GRA), and MarkNuckols (MSSI 1999).

As part of the Slavic Center’s missionto promote the study of the former SovietUnion and Eastern Europe at all levels ofeducation, a three-hour workshop for K-12 teachers was offered on the topic “TheBalkans and the EU.” M.A. “Pasha” John-son, RCMSS GA Lauren Ressue, SlavicCenter intern Ana Tyler, and MiroljubRu‘i}, OSUL Assistant Curator of the EastEuropean and Slavic Studies collection,presented lectures and shared resources.

Five local teachers attended the inten-sive, informative session: James Moody,

Columbus Preparatory School for Boys,Patricia Stevens, Arts Impact MiddleSchool, Karen Scranton, ColumbusSchool for Girls, and history teachersLeslie Hosgood and Jamie Paoloni fromOlentangy Orange High School. Leslielater wrote, “I really enjoyed the presen-tations—it was nice to feel like a studentagain. [We] will be collaborating to createsome lessons based on the resources wereceived.” Karen sent her daughter, RobinSmith, an incoming OSU freshman whojust spent seven months in Russia, to talkto Pasha and Lauren about the HRL andother Slavic resources on campus.

CASHCash is often the most convenient way to give.It is fully deductible provided deductions areitemized.

NEW ENDOWMENTSOnce established, an endowment fund is a de-pendable and perpetual source of support,since the principal is invested and only a per-centage of the earnings from that principal arespent each year. All endowments at Ohio Stateare held by the OSU Foundation. $50,000 isneeded to establish a named or restricted en-dowment. Donors may establish their own fundor contribute to endowments that already havebeen established. For example, the HRL hasat this time no separate endowment fund spe-cific to its needs as a special collection of theOSU Libraries. Such a fund could be estab-lished.

GIFTS IN KINDThe HRL receives many gifts in kind. A “gift inkind” is a physical piece, an actual book, ormanuscript, lithograph, etc., that falls within thepriorities of the Collection Development Policyof the HRL. These collection priorities arelargely focused on microfilms of medievalSlavic Cyrillic manuscripts, facsimiles of suchmanuscripts, reference books on medievalSlavic (especially Cyrillic) culture, and relatedmaterial. Gifts in kind may be one item, or sev-eral, or even several hundred. No matter thenumber of the gifts in kind, two things need tobe stressed from the outset. We cannot giveor suggest appraisals for the value of the giftsin kind, and accepting them is often a lengthyprocess of communication between the HRLand the donor.

NOTABLE ACQUISITION

The OSU Libraries occasionally receivemonetary donations intended for the HilandarResearch Library. Such donations become partof the Friends of Libraries Hilandar ResearchLibrary account. Books can be purchased us-ing these funds. For example, earlier this yearwe purchased a special book through the gen-erosity of Alex Machaskee. “The book is AHistory of Servia, and the Servian Revolu-tion, from Original Mss. and Documents.London: John Murray, 1848. 8vo. xxiv, 477,[3] pp. Translated from the German of LeopoldRanke by Mrs. Alexander Kerr. SUPPORT FOR EXISTINGENDOWMENTS

Contributions may be made to any of the en-dowments that benefit RCMSS or HRL. TheHilandar Endowment Fund #603182 was es-tablished in the early 1980s and generates an-nual income to support research in the HRL.This endowment is now held by the Collegeof Arts and Sciences. The annual income sup-ports research visits, conference and travel insupport of the HRL and RCMSS; teaching,especially related to manuscripts and EasternOrthodox culture; conferences such as the in-ternational series of Hilandar conferences; andmany other necessary activities. For the HRL,for example, the endowment income providesoccasional money for purchases of special ma-terial, usually manuscript-related, or it maysupport outreach activities, special lectures,and exhibits of HRL material, or similar pur-poses. Many other endowments exist thathonor noted Serbians such as the Nikola Teslaand Mihajlo Pupin Memorial EndowmentFunds or the Papich Family Endowment Fund.

HONORARY ANDMEMORIAL GIFTS

Honoring a family member, friend, colleagueor faculty member with a gift is a good way topay tribute to a loved one. At times you mayhave noticed that among the gifts listed in thenewsletter several such gifts have been made.

PLEDGESPledges enable a donor to plan a personal givingprogram that is convenient and tax wise. Termsare flexible and at the option of the donor.

SECURITIESStock certificates may be used for outright giftsor pledge payments. Certificates may be re-assigned directly to the OSU foundation ormay be transferred through the owner’s bro-ker. The mean value of the date of transfer de-termines the value of a gift.
