2.5 Abstract

The Abstract is a brief explanation of the purpose of the following work, indicating the main steps that will lead the author to demonstrate his/her point. 2.7 Table List (Annex 8)

If you use tables, you need to list them separately. In-text, Table description (e.g. Table 3: Economic Development across Europe) must be above the table and the source (if available) (Source: OECD, 2017) must be stated at the bottom. In-text sample (table format may vary):

2.8 Figures List (Annex 9)

If you use figures and/or lists, you need to list them separately. In-text, Figure description and source must both be below the figure. (E.g. Figure 3: Global Income Inequality) (Below the description, Source: OECD, 2017). In-text sample:

2.1 Abbreviations (Annex 10)

In most thesis works, abbreviations are used to avoid losing space with frequently used words, or names [e.g. European Union (EU)]. Following the figures/tables pages, an abbreviation table must be present.

3 HOW TO CITE SOURCES

Citing is the process of giving credit to the sources used to write papers. It is essential to give proper credit to another author’s work which you use for your own research. If you do not, this is considered as plagiarism (and the Project Report/Master Thesis will be graded as ‘failed’). The maximum accepted plagiarism is %20 in total and no more than %2 from a single source. A plagiarism report must be submitted to the Institute together with the bound thesis and a `Thesis Submission Form`, available on ` http://www.ciu.edu.tr/en/academic/institute/forms `.

6

Page 7: CYPRUS INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY · Web viewArea # of Words for Master Thesis* # of Words for PhD Thesis* Social Sciences 10.000-20.000 40.000-80.000 Basic Sciences 8.000-15.000 25.000-60.000

The preferred referencing styles of the Institute is either Harvard or APA referencing style, however, other styles are accepted.

3.1 In-text Citations

You may refer to someone else's ideas or work either by repeating the exact words that another author has written (‘quoting’) or by expressing what somebody has written by using your own words (‘paraphrasing’).

In-text citations differ upon the referencing style chosen. Amongst numerous styles, the most popular referencing styles used are; AMA, APA, Chicago, Harvard, IEEE, ISO 690, MHRA, MLA, OSCOLA, Turabian and Vancouver. For details, click on www.citethisforme.com and choose the preferred referencing style. For an example, you can choose what type of source you will reference (e.g. article, book, website, dissertation etc.), after enter the details of the source and add the reference to your list. This way you can see how to in-text reference.

The most important aspect of referencing is that the same style must be used throughout the thesis. Starting from the beginning of the thesis to the end, in-text references must be compatible with a specific style (APA, Harvard etc.).

Checklist of what to include for the most common information sources:

Pears, R. and Shields, G. (2010) Cite them right: The essential referencing guide. 8th ed. Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan.

Quoting: Place quotation marks (“…”) around the words being taken from another author. Give publication dates (the name of the author, the year of publication of the text being quoted and the page number of the text from which the quote has been taken) in brackets after the second quotation mark. Example: The metaphor “the sun was crying tears from hell” is linked to that of “devilish spawns erupted from under the ground to calm the Gods…” (Neve, 1996, p. 27).

Paraphrasing: Provide publication dates (the name of the author, the year of publication of the text being paraphrased and the number of the page the paraphrasing is based upon) in brackets after the sentence or paragraph in which the ideas written down by somebody else are paraphrased. Example: (Rees, 1998)

If the name of the author is referred to in the text is mentioned, the year of the author’s publication has to be given immediately after the author’s name. Example: Rees (1998) explains…

When a source has no known author, use Anonymous as the name.Example: (Anonymous, 2005, The Weekly Traveler).

Please note that the above specified examples are not obligatory as citing in text may vary from Harvard Style to APA style. The most important aspect of in-text citation is that it must be the same all the way through. Weather you prefer to write it as (Rees, 1998) or (A. Rees, 1998) or (Rees, 1998, p.26), it must be in the same format throughout the thesis. If the source you are using has 2 authors, you will cite it as (Soyer and Kucuksener, 2018), whereas if the source has 3 authors you will cite it as (Soyer, Kucuksener and Ozgit, 2018). If the source has more than 3 authors, you will in-text cite it as (Soyer et al., 2018). Below, these are detailed.

3.2 List of References (at the end of the Dissertation/Thesis / Project)

The structure of the list of references will differ upon the referencing style chosen. Amongst numerous styles, the most popular referencing styles used are; AMA, APA, Chicago, Harvard, IEEE, ISO 690, MHRA, MLA, OSCOLA, Turabian and Vancouver. For details, click on www.citethisforme.com and choose the preferred referencing style to see the different methods.

The most important aspect of referencing is that the same style must be used throughout the list. Starting from the beginning of the list, the same type of source must be referenced the same.

3.3 Footnotes

When referencing by using footnotes, please do not forget to specify the page of the source you are using. Depending on the referencing style, instead of using footnotes, you could prefer to use definitions in the first chapter. However you could choose footnotes too.

To cite a book previously cited in footnotes, you can use “ibid” with the number of the footnote the book was first mentioned in, then put the page number. For example: 1 Sturgeon, T. (1995). Science fiction. In The Encyclopedia Americana (Vol. 24). Danbury, CT: Grolier, pp. 390-392 2 Ibid, 1, 394
