UNDERSTANDING THE CITIZENSHIP AND RESIDENCY MARKET

The Citizenship and Residency Market can be very confusing with the number of offerings from many different countries providing what looks on the surface like similar offerings. The reality can be very different and hopefully this information will help dispel some of the myths, simplify your choice and ensure that you choose the right option that meets your requirements. The offerings can be placed into 3 main categories: - 1. The Caribbean/Americas Citizenships 2. The European Residency Programmes

3. the FULL EU Citizenship Programmes. 1. The Caribbean/Americas Citizenships These offerings from countries such as St Kitts, Dominica, Antigua & Barbuda, and Grenada are typically in the $250,000 to $400,000 region and provide you with citizenship of that country only.

They also provide the ability to travel on a visa to between 80 and 165 countries and that is all. They DO NOT allow you to Live or Work in Europe. 2. The European Residency Programmes The European Residency Programme offerings are provided by Spain, Portugal, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Hungary (the latter two confusingly name them citizenship programmes) they typically cost in the region of €500,000 and offer residency (live in the particular country), the ability to travel to Schengen countries and an option to upgrade to full citizenship after 5-10 years. Therefore offering more than the Caribbean offerings. They DO NOT allow you to live or work throughout Europe. The lowest cost at €300,000, fastest 8 weeks and most popular is the Cyprus Residency Programme. 3. The FULL EU Citizenship Programmes Whilst the Citizenship Programmes are more expensive they offer complete FREEDOM, SECURITY & MOBILITY to ALLOW you & your family to LIVE, WORK or STUDY anywhere in the European Union and provide extensive travel to over 150 countries. There are only 3 FULL EU Citizenship Offerings in the market: UK, Malta & Cyprus 3.1. The UK (EU) Tier 1 Investment Programme The UK Tier 1 Investment Programme has recently been increased to £2m (€2.8m) making it the most expensive of the three options. It takes a minimum of 5 years before applying and you have to live a minimum of 185 days in the UK every year for 5 years, pass a language test and interview, therefore making it expensive and very difficult to qualify. 3.2. The Malta (EU) Individual Investor Programme The Citizenship Programme costs €1.15m, however you are required to donate €650,000 to the Maltese government as a gift. You are required to live in Malta for 12 months before applying and the application then takes a further 6 months. You are also required to speak Maltese or English. The qualification challenge and the donation to the government are proving to make the Maltese option unpopular. 3.3. The Cyprus (EU) Citizenship by Investment Programme The Cyprus Programme requires an investment of €2.5m (typically in real estate), takes 3-4 months and there are no residency or language requirements.
