Cypress Ladies AssociationOur October meeting had to be one of the most fun meetings we
have had. My cheeks still hurt from smiling and laughing. Afterdiscussing some Association business, we proceeded to have ourWhite Elephant Exchange. Let me tell you there were some prettyawful things there to receive but I think every one agreed that myitem from Jeri had to be the WORST. I should have gone with theugly item I could see instead of the unknown horror that lied in thepretty wrapped box. Needless to say no one wanted to steal myprecious treasure from me. All I can say is look out next year as youmay see it popping up again. That is not to say that everything wasugly, some members actually got something that they thought wasnot so bad and actually liked.
The other fun part of the meeting was hearing the stories as whyand how they even got the treasure that they were so willing to giveup. I think Laura and Joni’s stories were the best and I hope Jennifer’shead is feeling better as she decided to give away a painted wine boxthat fell on her head before the meeting. Thank you Jennifer forhosting the meeting, the Halloween decorations and goodies madethe meeting very festive. Also for those who came in costumes, youall looked GREAT!
Our next meeting will be held by Marianne MacLeod. We will bemaking Rock Candy. Please start saving small glass jars that we willdecorate and use for putting the candy in. Baby food jars work greatas well as jelly, relish and mustard jars.
Note our next three meeting dates, topics and host. We welcomeand encourage new members any time. You are sure to have a goodtime if you are able to come. Meetings are normally from 2-4 p.m. onSunday. For more information contact Laura Graff at (281) 373-9192.

CYPRESS MILLM.U.D. Property Tax Rate Reduced
Cypress Hill MUD#1 has reduced the property tax rate for 2004from $1.50 to $1.43 per $100 valuation. Because the district has beenunder the order of the bankruptcy court, taxes had been frozen at the$1.50 rate. This rate could not be lowered until the original bondsissued by the district were paid, and this year the district was able torestructure debt to pay off these bonds.

CYPRESS MILLOne of the advantages of living in the Cy Fair School District is
their commitment to the school music programs. The band programis outstanding. Instrumental music begins in the 6th grade whereeach day students have one period of music instruction groupedwithin the specific instruments. For example, the flutes learn together,as do the clarinets, the trumpets, the low brass and percussion. After36 weeks of 45 minutes a day, the student has learned many aspectsof the instrument and musicianship. The students then progress tothe 4 bands leveled for ability. Mrs. Pricilla Bell, the band director ofGoodson Middle School said that currently there are 165 beginningband students and 235 continuing students divided into the 4 bands. This is the largest middle school program in the district. Mrs. Bellsaid, “We are busting at the band seams and we love it!” They have2 other directors, Mr. Alex Hinojosa and Ms. Nicole Huerta.Throughout their middle school experience the students are able toparticipate in UIL contests for the bands, in which they are ratedagainst a state wide standard with “1” being a superior rating. Thesebands have consistently been rated superior since the school openedin 2001. The students are also encouraged to perform in individualcompetitions such as solo and ensemble festivals. Goodson walkedaway with 200 medals this past year. Many of the students alsoaudition for Region Band and earn a spot. One of the highlights forthe year is when the 8th graders are able to perform at a Cy-Fair football
Cy-Fair Band Programgame in the stands along side the Cy-Fair High School marchingband. This sets the stage for their freshman year in which they are onthe field performing at halftime.
Mr. Mark Veenstra, director of the band program at the Cy-FairHigh School always looks forward to each years band. This yearsband consists of 280 students. The directors spend a lot of timechoosing the program and watching it come together. To watch theprogression of the initial practices with all the students trying tolearn their music and move to their designated spots for theirperformances on the football field, you can see all the hard work, practice and dedication that go into making Cy-Fair Marching Bandone of the most respected bands in the area.
One of the exciting things for the band students is the cohesiveness.Practice begins in late July and by the time school starts, manyfreshmen have already made new friends. There is the big sister/bigbrother program which connects an upperclassman to an incomingfreshman. There are the traditional get-togethers including skatingparties, swim parties, lock-ins and a semi formal band banquet at theend of the year. All the students perform at the varsity football gamesand the competition band performs at area marching bandcompetitions throughout the season.

What a great way to wrap up the time ofThanksgiving than to begin to think of Christmas. Make sure this is on yourcalendar. This Months FAQ – Do I have to be a member to participate in the programsat Good Shepherd:

• Next up are the Sights, Sounds and Smells of Christmas on December12th. This is great quality family time for all ages. Join us at the churchfrom 3:30 to 5:00. Santa will be making a special trip to Good Shepherdto visit with the children. We’ll have lots of cookies to decorate and eat aswell as lots of crafts to make and share. PARENTS BRING YOUR CAMERAS!
