Safety Tips For Drivers &

Pedestrians With school in session, there is significantly more traffic in and around the school area. Pedestrians, bicyclists, buses and cars all contribute to school zone congestion. In addition, children do not always follow the rules of the road. Often they enter the street from between two cars, attempt to "run" red lights with their bikes through intersections, and skateboard or walk into traffic without checking. Some parents also drop off their students in the middle of traffic and have them cross the street, instead of dropping them off in a designated and safe area. According to the National Safe Routes to School program, more children are hit by cars near schools than at any other location. Because of this, motorists must exercise increased awareness in and around a school zone.

Below are some important tips and reminders to make the school zone safe.

Obey all traffic laws and speed limits, Be extra vigilant in school zones and residential neighborhoods Don't double park; it blocks visibility for students and vehicles Don't block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light or waiting

to make a turn, forcing pedestrians to go around you as this could put them in the path of moving traffic

Check side mirrors before opening your door to exit a vehicle Always use extreme caution to avoid striking pedestrians wherever

they may be, no matter who has the right of way Do not pass other vehicles in school zones or at crosswalks. Do not make illegal U-Turns Do not text or otherwise use a cell phone unless it is completely

hands-free Stop for school buses that are loading or unloading children Watch for and obey signals from school crossing guards Be alert and watch for children near schools, bus stops and in school parking lots Unless licensed to do so, do not park in handicap spaces to drop off or pick up children Do not use curbside lanes (in front of school buildings) that are designated for emergency vehicles only Cross streets only at crosswalks and follow the directions given by school crossing guards Students who ride a bike should wear a helmet and follow all safety rules for bicyclists Walk – don’t ride – a bicycle across streets and only in designated crosswalks Teenage students who drive to school should avoid speeding and minimize distractions from cell phone

usage, eating, loud music or disruptive passengers Never overload a vehicle. Every passenger must use a safety belt By exercising a little extra care and caution, drivers and pedestrians can co-exist safely in school zones.

All-American Solar Eclipse! Monday, August 21st

9:05AM -11:45AM! The eclipse details: We are getting a partial solar eclipse on August 21st! To get the total solar eclipse you would need to head to Oregon, Idaho, Oklahoma, Arkansas, or S. Carolina. In California, roughly 60% of the area of the sun will be blocked when the eclipse is at its maximum. It will start at 9:05 AM( during Per 2) with just a tiny part of the sun blocked, progressing to 60% blocked at 10:21 AM (during Per 3), and finishing at 11:45 (Per 4) with the last tiny part of the sun blockage ending.

How to view the eclipse: Looking directly at the sun at anytime can cause serious long-term damage to your eyes. During an eclipse we are more tempted to do it, and the partial blockage makes our eyes think it is not as dangerous. But it is! Every eclipse ends up with people losing part of their vision by staring unprotected at the sun.

Sunglasses offer no protection!

Eclipse shades are what you need to be able to look directly at the sun during an eclipse. You can purchase eclipse shades at 7-11 and some public libraries are given them away for free. Don’t have eclipse shades? You can still make a simple pinhole projector!

Aeries Loop/Communication These weekly announcements will be sent from Aeries Loop/Communication. In the upcoming weeks, new features will be introduced that will improve the communication to parents and students. Please note that all messages are currently sent via text, e-mail and phone calls. We know some messages sent are not suited for every method of notification and we are trying to be as deliberate as possible on how we communicate to you. One of the new features will improve our communication by giving us an option to select how messages are delivered( text, e-mail or phone calls). If needed, you can change your current method of notification by changing the settings on your Aeries account. Below is a quick tutorial on how to do so.

Food Delivery

Closed Campus

With the popularity of food delivery apps (e.g. Grubhub, Doordash, UberEats, Postmates) we also want to advise you that all food delivers to campus during school hours are banned. These delivers do cause a major disruption to the students and are a cause for major safety concerns. No delivers will be accepted on campus from any food delivery driver.

All students should plan on bringing their own lunch from home or plan to purchase a lunch at school.
