Boeing Co.’s Seattle-area factory shouldered the 787 production burden in the first quarter, but it was its South Carolina plant that grabbed most of the glory.

Numbers aside, the first-quarter highlight involved a Dreamliner that won’t be ready for delivery until next year. The 787-10, the longest of the three versions and the only one to be made exclusively in North Charleston, completed its first flight March 31.

Berkeley County population growth soars, fastest growing in the Charleston area

Berkeley County saw a spike in population growth last year, gaining nearly as many residents as Charleston and Dorchester counties combined, newly-released census estimates show.

Few counties in the Carolinas — and not one in the Northeast — saw as many residents moving in as did Berkeley County, which gained more than 8,000 people between mid-2015 and mid-2016.

Folks clamoring to work at, learn about Volvo’s South Carolina Plant

Volvo’s popularity in Berkeley County is setting attendance records and breaking the Internet.

The Swedish automaker, which is building a $500 million manufacturing plant off Interstate 26 near Jedburg, last week announced a slate of new job openings for the facility, which is scheduled to open in 2018.

When the county added the positions to its BerkeleyMeansBusiness.com industrial recruiting website on Aug. 23, the overwhelming response crashed the servers. A website that normally gets between 300 to 500 visits daily was swamped with than 24,000 hits in the two days after the job listings went live.

Elementary school, fire station planned for Foxbank Plantation

Land transfers have been finalized for an elementary school and fire station to be constructed in Foxbank Plantation.

Foxbank Ventures, which is a partnership between Chesapeake Capital Partners and The Randolph Group, donated 11 acres to the Berkeley County School District for the construction of the elementary school.

Construction for the school will begin this year and is currently scheduled to be completed by 2018. The school site is centrally located within the Foxbank Plantation community, located at the corner of Highway 52 and Cypress Gardens Road.
