Location of FilterFilter location options (see below)

The Hydratech Cyclone filter should be located on a firm and level base on the ground at least1.2m from the pond.

The filter can also be buried in the ground with a minimum of 5cm of the unit remainingvisible above ground level.

Ensure the filter outlet is at no more than a maximum of 4m head above the lid of the filter.

UVC Lamp Installation & ReplacementDO NOT TOUCH OR HOLD THE GLASS BULB WITH BARE FINGERS/HANDS

Warning - Failure to carry out routine maintenance of the filter under reducedor no flow conditions for long period (e.g. blocked foams) will result in a short foam life and will invalidate the Clearwater guarantee.

5. Release and remove the canister coversealing ring.6. Carefully remove the canister cover takingcare not to damage the quartz sleeve. A keyslot is provided between the canister andcanister cover to aid removal.7. Ensure that the canister cover O-ring sealremains in place.8. Remove outlet fitting cone and outlet tubefrom the filter foams.9. Thoroughly clean foams in the filtercanister if the Cyclone backwash system isgoing to be used. If not, remove foams andwash in a bucket of pond water, - proceed tostep (No. 24).10. Using the Cyclone Backwash System -Remove the cleaned foams from the filtercanister.

11. Removeoutlet tubecover and putin a safe place.12. Connectoutlet tube tooutlet fittingcone and insertinto canistercover lid.13. Replace canister cover lid ensuring that the canister cover O-ring seal remains in place.

14. Secure canister cover sealing ring.15. Connect the inlet hose by screwing onthe hose connector locking nuts.16. Connect the designated waste hoseconnector to the outlet. (Drain/flower bed)17. Ensuring that the end of the waste hoseoutlet is in the correct position (e.g.drain/flowerbed) turn on your pond pump.

27. Reconnect pump inlet hose by screwingthe hose connector locking nuts, checkinginlet arrow is correct.28. Reconnect filter outlet hose by screwinglocking nut.29. Switch on pond pump and UVC at theelectrical supply.30. Check that all seals and hoses are watertight to ensure that pond water level ismaintained (small leaks over a period of timecan empty your pond).

Cleaning of the biospheres should not benecessary.

After prolonged use the filter foams maybecome damaged. This can be identified bythe inability of the foams to return to shapeafter cleaning. Temporary correction can beachieved by placing the foams in boiling water. If this does not work, they need replacing.

18. Cyclone action causes the Biospheres to stir up built up waste in the filter canister.Switch off pump when waste water begins torun clear. Your filter has now beenbackwashed and is clear of waste.19. Disconnect the designated waste hoseconnector from outlet.20. Disconnect the inlet hose.21. Release canister sealing ring.22. Remove canister cover.23. Replace outlet tube cover.24. Replace foams in correct order (see‘Getting to know your Hydratech Cyclone’Foam configuration chart - page 4) insertingthem on the outlet tube and outlet cone.25. Replace canister cover lid, ensuring thatthe O-ring seal is retained in place.26. Clip shut the canister cover sealing ring.

Annual MaintenanceCheck for wearOnce a year you should service your Hydratech Cyclone Filter.

Dismantle the filter and examine all the parts for wear or damage, replacing any parts thatshow obvious signs of wear and/or damage. (See ‘Getting to know your Hydratech Cyclone’for parts codes and descriptions)

Special attention should be paid to all O-ring seals.

Replacing foamsAfter prolonged use the filter foams may become damaged. This can be identified by theinability of the foams to return to shape after cleaning.

Replacement of the foams is recommended.

UVC BULBS & QUARTZ SLEEVE MAINTENANCEThe UVC bulb must be replaced yearly. It is recommended that the bulb is replaced andreconnected in the spring. The Quartz sleeve can become coated in lime scale build up in hard water areas. This shouldbe carefully removed from the quartz sleeve with a soft cloth.Blagdon Pond Pump Cleaner should be used in stubborn cases.Remove the quartz sleeve from the unit and soak for 3 hours in Pump Cleaner, ensuring thatall O-rings are checked and replaced, if necessary.A wet test must be carried out after maintenance to ensure there are no leaks before the UVCis reconnected (see page 8).

Winter StorageThe filter can be run year round if the pump flow is maintained. Alternatively in winter thefilter may be switched off. Follow annual maintenance procedure and store frost-free in thehouse or garage until spring.

Connecting to your pumpThe pump supplying the Hydratech Cyclone must not have a pumping head exceeding 4m - 0.4 Bar.

The maximum flow rate recommended is stated in the filter performance and specificationchart. This flow should not be exceeded.

The ideal flow rate for your pond is to pump the volume of the pond water through the filterevery 2-4 hours. To calculate your pond volume: average length (m) x average width (m) xaverage depth (m) x 1000 = Litres Pond Volume

To calculate your pump’s flow rate, fill a container from the outlet hose of the filter at the pond side.

Time how long this takes in seconds e.g. a 10 ltr bucket takes 12 seconds to fill. Divide 3600(the number of seconds in an hour) by the time it takes to fill the bucket e.g. 12 seconds. Thenmultiply by the volume of the container. e.g. 10 ltr. Therefore - 3600 ÷ 12 = 300 seconds300 x 10 ltr = 3000 ltrs per hour flow rate.

To increase flow you may need to get a larger pump. If flow is too high use an inline valve toreduce it.

The purpose of the pump is to transfer dirty water from the pond to the Hydratech Cyclone filter.

Placing the pump at the opposite end of the pond to the filter will give the best results.

Foam-free pump designs will give optimum Cyclone filtration.

We recommend Blagdon Amphibious Pond Pumps with pump cage, Hydratech Multi orHydratech Torrent Pond Pumps.

6. INSTALLATION 7. INSTALLATION 8. INSTALLATION

10. MAINTENANCE & CLEANING 11. MAINTENANCE & CLEANING

Electrical installation - UVC ModelsThe power supply must meet the specifications on the product.

The UVC is intended to be used with either a weatherproof cable connector or permanently connected to the fixed wiring in the main system other thanby means of a plug and socket.

The cores in the supply cable are coloured in accordance with the following code: Brown = Live, Blue = Neutral.

Do not use the supply cable to lift the UVC as this may cause damage.

Fuse - This unit is protected by a 1 amp slow 5mm x 20mm fuse.

WARNING A Residual Current Device (RCD), also known as the Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB), with a tripping current not exceeding 30mA must be installed in the supply circuit.

A means of disconnection from the supply having a contact separation of at least 3mm in all poles must be incorporated in the fixed wiring.

9. INSTALLATION

For permanent installations to the mains supply, it is necessary to conform to the regulationsof the local electricity authority and this would include the use of a metal or plastic conduit toprotect the cable.

Attention has been drawn to the fact that special rules may exist concerning the installation ofyour pond UVC (i.e. local building regulations).

This UVC must not be used in swimming pools, or areas where people are in contact with the water.

Always disconnect the mains electricity supply whilst the equipment is being installed, repaired, maintained or handled. Consult a qualified electrician if in any doubt about wiringthis product to the mains supply.

Electrical/SafetyUVC Warning: Caution: Dangerous Ultra Violet Radiation. The rays from the UVC lamp are harmful to eyes and skin.

Always turn off UVC electrical supply before any maintenance.

To protect unit from flooding, leave a minimum 5cm showing above ground level toprotect UVC electrics.

Never immerse unit in water.

Locate unit 1.2m minimum from pond edge to ensure the filter cannot fall in.

Connecting HosesThe recommended hose size foryour Hydratech Cyclone filter isstated in the filter performance andspecification chart. (see page 5)

Always secure hose with a jubilee clip.

Warming the hose in a bucket ofboiling water can aid fitting.

Always ensure that the smallerdiameter hosetail is cut off andremoved to prevent reduced filterperformance. See diagram (right).

Use the shortest possible hose lengths to minimise flow restrictions.

Avoid folds and kinks in the hose, which will reduce flow and filter performance.

Example Cyclone 5000: Hose 25cm / 1”

1. Above ground, pumped up to a waterfall. 2. Above ground, pumped back to the pond.

3. Below ground, pumped up to a waterfall 4. Below ground, pumped back to the pond

In order to correctly identify if you have green water or cloudy/brown water, a settlement test should be carried out.

Take a glass of pond water and allow to settle for a few hours. When the glass isstirred a small layer of settled waste can be seen at the base of the glass. Thisindicates that you have brown or cloudy water and that if you have a UVC modelit is working correctly. If there is no settlement it indicates that you have greenwater and the UVC is not working correctly.

Problem

Filter Leaks

• Check that all O-ring seals are in place and are not damaged. Replace if necessary.

• Check that the canister cover sealing ring is correctly fitted and closed.

• Check hose connector seals and locking nut for damage.

• PTFE tape may be needed to give a water-tight hose to hose connector seal.

• Always secure with a jubilee clip. See connecting hoses (page 6).

Cloudy/Brown Water

• The flow rate/pond turnover is too high or low. Check pond volume and pump flow rate. See connecting your pump (page 7).

• The filter is not being supplied with pond water 24 hours a day. Do not turn off your pump.Continuous running is needed to maintain a clean and healthy pond.

• Foam discs are insufficiently blocked to remove fine waste. Treat with Interpet Clear Pond Treatment.

• Do not clean foams until the filter outlet flow is visibly reduced.

• Foam discs are blocked/damaged - follow routine maintenance. Replace foams discs.

• The water is extremely dirty - remove leaves and waste - do a partial water change.

• Filter is incorrectly sized - refer to filter performance and specification chart. Calculate pondvolume - see ‘Connecting to your pump’ (page 7).

• Inlet and outlet pipes are connected the wrong way round. Disconnect and reconnect usingthe flow in flow out arrows on the filter.

• All foams have not been replaced or are positioned incorrectly. See ‘Foam configuration chart’ (page 4).

• Outlet tube cover is missing from the filter outlet tube. Replace with tube or block to stop water bypassing foam. See ‘Getting to know your Hydratech Cyclone’ diagram (page 2).

Green Water

• Settlement test the water to ensure that there is no sediment suspended in the water. If there is follow cloudy/brown water troubleshooting list.

• If you have a non UVC model this condition cannot be cleared without the use of a green water treatment such as Interpet Green Away or by purchasing a UVC clarifier such as Blagdon UPC Ultraviolet Pond Clarifier.

• At dusk check that the UVC bulb is illuminated by looking at the UVC viewing window at the top of the cover lid. Turning on and off will aid identification of the pale blue UVC light. If the light does not light follow the ‘UVC Light not illuminated’ procedures (below).

• The UVC may be working effectively but the foams are clean and have not blocked sufficientlyto effectively remove the fine coagulated waste. Treat the pond with Interpet Clear Pond tospeed foam blockage and do not clean until the filter outlet flow is visibly reduced.

• The flow rate from the pump exceeds the maximum for the installed filter - check filter performance and specification chart. Reduce flow if needed.

• The pump flow rate is below the minimum turnover for the size of pond. See ‘Connecting to your pump’ (page 7) and ‘Poor Flow’ procedure (below).

• The filter and UVC is too small for the pond and pond conditions present - check filter performance chart for accurate filter sizing.

• The UVC quartz sleeve is dirty - clean the sleeve gently with soft cloth using a vinegar solution. For built up lime scale use Blagdon Pond Pump Cleaner as a dip.

• Follow all cloudy water trouble-shooting points.

UVC Light not illuminated

• Check all fuses and electrical connections - follow ‘Electrical installation’ (page 9).

• UVC bulb has a limited life span - replace if worn or damaged.

Poor Flow from the filter outlet

• Inspect pond pump for blockage and ensure that the pump is in good working order.

• Check foams, if they are blocked clean as per routine maintenance.

• Ensure that inlet and outlet pipes are on correctly - see arrows on filter box.

• Pressure filters cause a restriction in the outlet pipe work from your pump, equivalent to a 1-2m head lift - ensure that the pump is capable of running with this back pressure plus the additional lift if the outlet is running to a water fall etc.

• Always use the minimum length of hose needed as this will keep pressure losses to a minimum.

• Ensure that the hose connector has been cut to the correct size and the smaller hosetail size removed - see ‘Connecting hoses’ (page 6).

• Ensure there are no kinks or folds in the hose.

1. Screw the UVC fully into the light fittinginside the lid of the UVC chamber.

2. Insert the bulb into the quartz sleeve and close the chamber lid.

3. Secure the lid with the four locking screws ensuringthat the arrow on the UVC chamber lid faces the filter outlet.

4. If closing the lid is difficult, it may be necessary to lubricate the O-ring seals with a little vegetable oil.Warning - The cover must be completely closed before the UVC is turned on.Direct exposure to UVC light can damage your eyes or skin. You may now connect your UVC to the electrical supply and turn on.

5. Viewing of the light though the viewing windows on the top of the cover lid should be carried out after dusk when a pale blue light can be seen.

Routine MaintenanceCarry out routine maintenance when thefilter outlet flow is visibly reduced.

1. Switch off and disconnect the UVC fromthe electrical supply before carrying outmaintenance.2. Turn off the pond pump.3. Disconnect the filter inlet hose byunscrewing the hose connector locking nuts.See inlet arrow on canister cover.4. Disconnect the filter outlet hose byunscrewing the hose connector locking nuts.See outlet arrow on UVC chamber cover lid.
