TOUR DE MELBOURNE - THE RACE TO IMPROVE CYCLIST SAFETYThis novel auditor training will provide participants the opportunity to experience first-hand how infrastructure
impacts cyclists.
Attendees will be provided a bicycle or e-bike (or they may bring their own) and will be guided on a cycling tour that
highlights a variety of cycling treatments both on and off-road. This hands-on approach will give attendees insight
into how this vulnerable road user experiences the metropolitan network and the hazards they face. Moreover, being
actively involved in the training course will sharpen attendee’s skills in identifying hazards and providing solutions for
cycling infrastructure.
Stops will be made along the journey for the group to pause and reflect on the ride. Experienced facilitators will
provide insight and communicate what is ‘best practice’ for delivering cycling infrastructure. Participants will be
encouraged to share their own experiences of the ride whilst developing their understanding of what treatments are
available.

CYCLING AUDITOR TRAINING COURSE | PROGRAM AGENDA
KEY LEARNING OUTCOMESKey Learning Outcome 1 - Gaining personal user experience of the safety risks faced by cyclists
This training course is not a desktop study of the technical aspects of cycling infrastructure treatments. Rather,
participants will experience the level of safety provided across a range of cycling treatments in Metropolitan
Melbourne. Participants can go on to use this practical experience to better acknowledge and appreciate the safety
risks when designing, developing or auditing cycling projects.
Key Learning Outcome 2 - Identify specific safety features of infrastructure which raise/lower safety risks for cyclists
The cycling route for the training has deliberately incorporated lengths of the PBN & Strategic Cycling Corridors ie high
cyclist movement corridors. For this reason, participants will be using common cycling commuter and recreational
routes. As part of the day’s training, participants will encounter on-road, segregated and separated paths as well as
shared user paths. Stops will be made to discuss the variety of environments experienced and how the infrastructure
provided impacts upon the safety of cyclists.
Key Learning Outcome 3 - Communicate audit findings
This objective supplements the skills achieved in the Road Safety Accreditation Course. Invariably, being able to
communicate the findings when evaluating particular treatments is essential to be able to solve any safety hazards
and to identify any inherent risks. Our facilitators will provide examples of cycling audits previously undertaken and
highlight the language used and how particular solutions/recommendations have been presented.
Key Learning Outcome 4 - Appraise and evaluate the effectiveness of cyclist infrastructure
Guest speakers will elucidate their regarded opinion as to the effectiveness of particular treatments. SSS facilitators
will also share their experience in evaluating cycling infrastructure through group discussions.
