What do I have to do?Practical tasks are as follows:

Performing and Composing (68 mks) Paper 02 34%• 1 Solo piece (15 mks), Scale /Arpeggio (5 mks), and viva voce (4 mks) =24 mks• 2 written compositions – an original piece (20 mks), an arrangement (20 mks) and viva voce (4 mks)= 44mks * one composition must be performed at the practical examination

composer = 20 mks• 1 Solo performance (15 mks), & Scale /Arpeggio (5 mks), and 1 Ensemble (12 mks) =32 mks………………………………………………………………………………………………..Listening and Appraising (LIAP) (55 mks) Paper 01 40%• 45 mins. Listening exam (musical perception) and then a further 1 hour 15 mins.

What will I learn?We will look at pieces of music covering these areas -

• Classical Music 1600-1899• Music in the 20th Century (rock, pop, hip-hop, R&B)• Popular Music in Context (Jazz, calypso, folk, gospel)• World Music

We will learn to use music software: Finale/musescore We will learn new musical structures We will listen and learn about many types of music and how

it has impacted on the music you listen to today We will learn to compose and perform music

What do I already know?• Notes on the stave• Bass Clef and Treble Clef• Major / Minor sounds• Elements of music – rhythm, pitch, timbre, form, harmony, etc• Chords - triads• Where to find the notes on the keyboard/pan/recorder• Some Classical composers and their music• Computer software: Notepad• We have listened to many types of music at Form 3: World Music,

Classical Music and Popular Music• You have composed some pieces of music• You have performed some types of music• You have described your work using music words

What type of person should do this course?

• Someone who loves to find out how music works• Someone who is creative• Someone who is open-minded about all types of music• Someone who enjoys a challenge• Someone who is committed to learning their chosen instrument /

voice• Someone who enjoys performing in front of an audience either as a

soloist or in groups• Started to do grades or will achieve grade 1 in the first year• Someone who is willing to participate in all aspects of musical life at

Holy Faith Convent• Someone who wants to be a musical role model to the lower school

Aims of the Music Program• CSEC Music is for any student who wishes to further develop

her interest, enjoyment and understanding of Music and wish to improve her abilities and skills through performing and composing individually and in groups.

• These students will expand their understanding and appreciation of a range of music through listening, analysing, appraising and evaluating.

• Students will develop ICT skills by using the music technology facilities available to perform and compose (enabling them to record in the Computer room and use Finale, Musescore & Sibelius Compass sequencing software).

Expectations• CSEC Music students will be expected to have an

enthusiasm for Music and should want to develop their interest, enjoyment, skills and understanding across a range of musical areas.

• In order to achieve highly, students will be expected to take great responsibility for their learning, in preparation for further education.

• They will have to be effective independent learners who will work hard, be organised and reliable, reflect on their learning, work effectively in groups and participate and be inquisitive in lessons.

Expectations

• They will also have to be willing to spend time outside of lessons developing their musical skills. This will include: utilising the Music Room and facilities; practicing their instrument(s) at home and attending their specialist instrumental lessons each week (paid for by the school (yeah right!);

• participating in one of the Music Clubs to widen their musical ensemble skills and understanding; and performing in occasional evening performances.

Expectations

• CSEC Music can help to provide many further opportunities and pathways. Through practical music making students will develop broader life skills and attributes that are important for any other future course or employment, such as improved social abilities, confidence and team-work skills.
