This project shows strikingly that green tea and its extract (EGCG) induced significant death and DNA damage in human lung and skin normal cells. The results provide a compelling explanation why antioxidants increased lung and skin cancers observed in clinical trials, and unravel a new damaging mechanism. This study may lead to effective prevention and therapies of diseases. From participating in MusicFest Nationals with WCI's Senior Orchestra to playing provincial Badminton tournaments, my high-school experience has been full of excitation. Initiating from an unexpected gift (a dietary antioxidant product called OPC-3®) received by my family, my curiosity drove me to do literature searches on health effects of antioxidants. Disappointed in lack of detailed experiments done on human normal cells, I began my own research. Exciting findings were then made. Although I'm presenting my findings, my research won't stop here. I know that this will be a new direction for research into the initiation, prevention and therapies of human diseases. I am determined to continue my research behind the new reductive mechanism that I've discovered. Science Fair has allowed me to apply what I've learnt in classroom and make a difference in the real world. I would really encourage students to participate in science fairs. You can learn so much and meet so many different people. Choose a topic you really love and ask yourself a question about it. That initial spark of curiosity can lead to many great things, you may be surprised.

Sherwood MarksEn Garde: Fencing Dummy Fights Back

Challenge:Category:Region:City:School:Abstract:

InnovationJuniorWaterloo-WellingtonGuelph, ONRockway Mennonite CollegiateMy invention is a mechanical fencing dummy that thrusts with proper formto provide fencers an efficient and useful training partner. Although fencersneed to practice frequently to improve their skills, a human opponent is notalways available. This dummy allows fencers to practice alone to improvetheir fencing techniques, timing, distance, stamina, speed and more. Thedummy's arm is actuated by a pneumatic cylinder.

BiographyMy name is Sherwood Marks and I live inGuelph, Ontario. My school is RockwayMennonite Collegiate in Kitchener. Beforeattending Rockway I attended Trillium WaldorfSchool from junior kindergarten to grade 6.Some of my favourite hobbies are drawing, archery, and fencing (which I got my projectinspiration from). I am training to become afencing and archery assistant coach. Since Iwas 8 years old I have been playing pianoand practicing fencing and archery. For thelast two summers I have gone to Halliburtonfor fencing and archery camp. Growing up Ihave spent a lot of time drawing, woodworking and making crafts. My art wasone of four Rockway pieces recently selectedfor the Expressions 38 art exhibition at theKitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery. I likeexperimenting with Technic Lego andmechanics. I am also an avid reader.Camping is one of my favourite activities and Iam in a scout troop. Last year I went on acanoe trip with the scouts to Algonquin Park. Iam planning to continue using my fencingdummy for training. I think entering a sciencefair is an excellent opportunity to challengeyourself and learn more about science andengineering.

BiographyHi I'm Nish and my project was called Gosh,My House Keeps Moving! I got the inspirationfor my project on my way to Florida to one ofmy mom's friends house and we were relyingon the GPS for guidance as we had neverbeen to Florida before. I was expecting theGPS to take us right to the house. However, Iwas really surprised when it took us 70-80meters away from where the house reallywas. In the future I would like to take a largerset of data, which may yield differentconclusions and also create a auto correctionformula and or a GPS estimator. My advice toother students is that if they work hard theycan accomplish anything. My hobbies includesports particularly basketball and baseball, playing guitar and hanging out with myfriends. In university/college I would like tostudy Math and Science as they are myfavourite subjects and my notableexperiences are going to theWaterloo-Wellington Science and Engineeringfair and also taking a trip to India in Decemberof 2011.

Emma HooverPlants That Bug Superbugs

Challenge:Category:Region:City:School:Abstract:

HealthJuniorWaterloo-WellingtonGuelph, ONJohn McCrae Public SchoolAntibiotic resistance in bacteria has become one of the major public healthconcerns of the 21st century. In my project, I designed and developed anassay for using ethnobotanical extracts to determine their efficiency againstantibiotic resistant strains of bacteria. The end goal would be to developsemi synthetic compounds from these natural products in order to developnew drugs to replace synthetic antibiotics.

BiographyMy name is Emma Hoover, I am from JohnMcCrae Public School, Guelph Ontario. I aminterested in Microbiology, and using plantsas alternatives to medication, sources ofelectricity etc. The inspiration for my projectcame from the CBC TV show "Market Place"where they conducted an experiment intotesting hotel cleanliness and found antibioticresistant strains of bacteria in each hotelroom tested. This gave me the idea to swabdifferent public places in Guelph to see ifantibiotic resistant bacteria was present onsurfaces we commonly touch, and to seewhether antibacterial compounds extractedfrom different plants would inhibit their growth.I have won the best of division award at theRegional Science Fair this year, and a goldmedal in my division. My plans for furtherinvestigations in my project would be tocreate a semi synthetic drug containingnatural and synthetic compounds toeffectively inhibit the growth of antibioticresistant strains of bacteria. Advice for anystudents interested in my project would be tohave a mentor with experience to guide youthrough the experiments and to research thistopic well for better comprehension.

Nikhil PatilSubliminal Stimuli - Can You Be Subliminally Misled?

Challenge:Category:Region:City:School:Abstract:

DiscoveryJuniorWaterloo-WellingtonWaterloo, ONCentennial P.S.This project revolves around the idea of making subliminal stimuli effective,as it is not powerful enough simply used by itself. Multiple novel conditionswere found in order to make subliminal stimuli effective. Three experimentswere conducted, with 165 subjects each. Statistical tests such as thechi-squared test of independence as well as the correlation coefficient testwere used to ensure valid findings.

BiographyMy name is Nikhil Patil and I have alwaysbeen perplexed by the subconsciousfunctions of the mind. This was the inspirationfor selecting the topic of subliminal stimuli. Iam fourteen years old, in grade eight, andhave been in the gifted congregated class forthree years. My CWSF project last year was(Optical Illusions-Does Colour Effect theIllusion?). I have been playing soccer for thepast three and a half years, and now play Repsoccer for Waterloo. From science fairs I havelearned that time management is mostimportant for scheduling homework andextracurricular activities. These skills help memanage many tasks ranging from academicsto outside-school activities. I have won a goldmedal twice in the Waterloo-WellingtonScience and Engineering Fair. I won theOntario Stepping Stone award last year. I wonbest in the life sciences division and theaward of excellence for the best in fair thisyear. DiscoverySeniorWaterloo-WellingtonGuelph, ONCentennial Collegiate & Vocational InstituteOur work investigated the use of hypoxia, or low oxygen, as an alternativeto hypothermia for storing organs and tissues. To determine whether or notit was possible to use hypoxia in this way, the embryos of Drosophilamelanogaster, or the fruit fly, were incubated in low-oxygen conditions. Wefound that this could stop the embryos from developing while maintainingtheir viability.

Daniel Penner, Aaron BuckleyThe Spots in the Lots

Challenge:Category:Region:City:School:Abstract:

EnvironmentSeniorWaterloo-WellingtonWaterloo, ONWaterloo Collegiate InstituteIncreasing parking demands cause thousands of litres of gasoline to beburned by drivers trying to find a parking spot. We created a modelpredicting the hourly occupancy of parking lots, based on their surroundingfeatures. By forecasting parking trends, drivers can be routed to the nearestparking lot that is likely to have available spots; thus greatly reducingwasted time and emissions.
