WELCOME

The mission of The Center for Wooden Boats is to connect residents and visitors to the water and to our rich maritime heritage. We preserve historic small craft, but perhaps more importantly, we preserve and recreate experiences. The programs in this catalog offer individuals and families a chance to participate in history and to learn skills that have long been part of the way of life in our region.

From its beginning in the 1970s, CWB has kept to its original vision as a place where maritime history comes alive. From sailing lessons in traditional small boats to field trips for schools to skills classes for children and adults to fishing trips in Saratoga Passage, CWB helps longtime residents and newcomers alike appreciate what is truly special about the Puget Sound area.

In a world that increasingly tries to substitute virtual worlds for the real one, CWB is unapologetically old fashioned. We welcome you to real places on Lake Union and Camano Island, offer real, hand crafted boats for you to enjoy and teach real skills that have stood the test of time. Authenticity is more than just a buzzword here.

So, whether you are a seasoned sailor or just discovering the joys of “messing about in boats,” you will find something in this catalog that will make 2015 a memorable year.

Registration Policies

TUITION & PAYMENTS

Full payment for courses under $500 is required with your application. For courses costing more than $500, we ask you to deposit one-half of the total cost with your application; the remainder is due by the day the class begins. Tuition is on a per-person basis and includes a $15 one-time, non-refundable administration fee.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Cancellations received 30 or more days before course start will receive a refund (minus a $15 administration fee). Cancellations received less than 30 days before course start are non-refundable, but your tuition can be credited toward other courses later in the same year. In case of emergency or insufficient number of registrations, we reserve the right to cancel a course and refund you in full. We strongly urge you to buy refundable airline tickets or flight insurance. We will not be responsible for any loss on non-refundable airline tickets.

COURSE DETAILS

Upon receipt of payment, we will provide you with relevant course information, including itinerary, materials list, suggested tools list, clothing list, accommodations, directions and other pertinent information. Please read the information carefully before coming to class. Materials costs are included in course fees unless otherwise noted in the course description. We supply tools needed for courses, but encourage you to bring your own for certain courses.

All of our courses involve some level of risk. You assume full responsibility for your own safety and must provide your own health and accident insurance. You will be required to sign a liability waiver prior to participation.

The Center for Wooden Boats at Cama Beach State Park is set in a spectacular, 433-acre waterfront location against a forested backdrop. It is connected by a mile-long trail to Camano Island State Park, a 134-acre camping park. Both parks are open for day use or overnight stays year-round.

VolunteerVolunteers of all ages and all abilities are an integral part of our daily operations. We need people just like you to bring our mission to life.

Volunteer positions include visitor services, boat rental, sailing instruction, boat restoration, special events, building maintenance, gardening and administrative support. If you believe in our mission, we can find a way to utilize your skills!

Sunday Public SailJoin us every Sunday for a free ride on one of our traditional wooden boats! The lineup of boats changes every Sunday, depending on volunteer availability and what boats are visiting our docks. Sprit boats, steamboats, electric boats, schooners, ketches, yawls and yachts; come every Sunday to sail them all, year-round, rain or shine!

Pond Boat SailingRent a Pirate Pond Boat to sail on Lake Union Park’s Model Boat Pond. These 39" pond boats are scale models of the R-Boat Pirate, which is on exhibit at our docks at South Lake Union. Sailing these miniature racing yachts is a great way to learn the basic concepts of sailing while enjoying time at the park.

Seattle has a long history of boat rental liveries that provided access to the water. We are proud to continue this tradition by offering small wooden boats for rent on Lake Union and Saratoga Passage.

At South Lake Union we rent rowboats, sailboats, canoes, and a pedal boat. Go for a sail, explore our maritime past and present, and see the Seattle skyline from the water.

At Cama Beach we also offer rowboats, sailboats, and canoes for rent, as well as kayaks and motorboats. Enjoy saltwater sailing and rowing, view Puget Sound wildlife and birds, or go fishing and crabbing.

Sailing CheckoutsBefore using our sailboats, you must pass a short checkout sail to make sure that you are comfortable handling traditional small boats. Checkouts take approximately 30 minutes, and require demonstrating sailing and docking skills, understanding Right-of-Way Rules, and practicing crew overboard retrieval.

Checkout Requirements

While maintaining control of the boat at all times, using clear voice commands and proper body motions, the Sailor must complete the following maneuvers single-handed. Multiple attempts are fine, given that the Sailor maintains control of the vessel at all times:

• Depart under sail

• Return to the dock under sail

• Execute several short-tacks

• Execute several controlled jibes

• Get the boat out of irons to port or starboard, as directed by instructor

• Demonstrate an understanding of Right-of-Way Rules

• Demonstrate and discuss actions to be taken in an overboard scenario

Rent a CabinCWB Members enjoy exclusive access to the Boatman’s Cabin, a deluxe waterfront cabin that sleeps seven. Take a relaxing beach vacation, spend time crabbing, or explore Camano Island.

The Boatman's CabinThe Boatman’s Cabin is a Deluxe Cabin with a private bathroom and simple kitchen facilities, as well as a small maritime history and boatbuilding library. Other amenities include:

Private LessonsPrivate lessons are perfect for sailors looking to refresh their skills or beginner sailors with busy schedules. You will work individually with your instructor to identify which skills to focus on. Lessons are available by appointment in many of the classic vessels in the Livery.

SailNOW!Begin a lifetime of sailing by learning basic boat handling skills. Each session starts with Shore School, a two-hour class devoted to sail theory and terminology. Following Shore School, a total of 12 hours of on-the-water instruction develops skills toward sailing solo. Lessons are taught with two students to one instructor on our fleet of classic Blanchard Junior Knockabouts. Students who successfully finish SailNOW! will receive a Livery Card, enabling them to rent sailboats in our Livery.

Sail Trim IntensiveSail in our Lightning or Mercury Racing Sloops! These sloop-rigged boats have additional sail controls compared to the Blanchard Jr. Knockabouts. You’ll spend the evenings learning how to use various adjustments such as boom vang, Cunningham and backstay, finishing with some friendly racing on the final night!

This course is great for people who want to get into the nitty-gritty of sloop-rigged sail trim and learn how to squeeze that extra half-knot out of the boat! If you are interested in participating in CWB’s one-design racing series RaceNOW!, this course is a great way to kick-start your racing season.

RaceNOW!Have fun racing in classic wooden boats! RaceNOW! is an opportunity for intermediate skippers and crew to learn the fundamentals of sailboat racing. Each evening includes racing strategy, tactics and the basics of the racing rules. Sailing in teams of two or three per boat, head out in our fleet of Blanchard Jr. Knockabouts for weekly races and some friendly competition. For new sailors, crewing during a race is one of the best ways to solidify your basic skills. Sign up as a team with friends, family or co-workers, or meet new people.

We employ experienced and talented boatbuilders and craftspeople to pass along their traditional skills through hands-on workshops designed for people of all skill levels. Our mission to preserve maritime heritage starts with you, whether its learning general woodworking, sailing or building the boat of your dreams.

Beginning WoodworkingThis class is for all you people with a hankering to make something out of wood. First you’ll learn how to use basic hand and power tools safely as you turn large hunks of wood into useful-sized pieces. With that mastered, you’ll move on to basic joinery, laminating, fastening and finishing. The instructor will impart the techniques that will have you ready and able to take on your own woodworking projects and heading for the lumber store.

Women’s Woodworking: An Introduction to the BasicsLadies! Have you always wanted to learn woodworking but never had the time or the encouragement? In addition to learning how to use hand and power tools safely, this workshop will cover basic joinery, laminating, fastening and finishing techniques. Walk away with the knowledge and confidence to embark on your own woodworking projects. Tell your sisters, girlfriends, mothers and daughters to sign up!

Varnishing: An Introduction to Brightwork Repair and MaintenanceThis two-day seminar will start with the basics of bright finishing and take the novice step-by-step through the process of varnishing bare or previously finished wood, with an emphasis on practicality. This class is aimed at those taking an active role in maintaining their vessels who have always been mystified by the finicky nature of varnish and the myriad myths surrounding it. Learn how to repair and rehabilitate varnished surfaces that have been damaged by wear and tear or neglect.

This workshop also will cover stripping old finishes and preparing bare wood for sealing and new varnish. Other topics include choosing sealers and finishes, efficient use of the many grades of masking tapes, abrasives and sanding blocks, edge tools and other tricks of the trade that will help produce a professional finish. On both days, demonstrations will be presented by the instructor and students will be able to hone their newly-acquired skills on work pieces.

LoftingLofting is a vital tool, typically the first step in building a new boat. It is a fascinating mental exercise in three-dimensional management and layering. We will discuss construction details, set-up and building molds for the real thing. Newcomers, put on your thinking caps! Veterans may even learn a trick or two. Reading about lofting is not enough; you’ve got to do it!

Kayak Building: Aleut Ikyak (Baidarka)The Aleut Ikyak, also widely known as the Baidarka, has been used for thousands of years as the primary method of transportation in the Aleutian Islands. It is the acme of Arctic Native design. Build your own boat, designed to fit your skill level and body type. The boats are built primarily of yellow and red cedar with all joinery pegged and lashed – no metal fastenings or glues. You do not need woodworking experience; just come equipped with enthusiasm!

Bronze Casting at Cama BeachLearn the basics of pattern-making, sand molding, and bronze casting. Under James McMullen’s instruction, students will make patterns of their designs to cast tools, boat hardware, and other objects in bronze

Boatbuilders often need special bronze fittings that are not available but can be cast without great expense. Anyone who has ever lost an oarlock will appreciate learning how to make copies of original hardware. Students also will learn how to build their own inexpensive furnace. Patterns will be provided for student use.

Wood-Canvas Canoe Restoration at Cama BeachTake home the skills necessary to restore your own wooden canoe! Join Eric Harman on a drop-in basis, for one day or the whole weekend, to repair and restore traditional wood-canvas canoes. During the class, we’ll remove wales and keels, strip old canvas to inspect for hull damage, and repair ribs, planks, and seats. If time allows, students will apply a coat of preservative, stretch on new canvas and apply filler. Students may be able to bring their own canoes by prior arrangement. Inquire at registration.

Youth programs at The Center for Wooden Boats provide a physically and emotionally safe environment in which youth are supported and encouraged as they develop greater confidence through learning new skills on the water and in the shop. Our programs help youth learn to solve problems in the real world and to interact with others in a positive manner and encourage youth to both reflect on their current learning experiences and shape new ones.

We list “suggested” prices because we want to make hands-on experiences available to everyone. If you require a discounted program, scholarship forms are available online. Youth Sailing and Boatbuilding programs are designed to engender skills in leadership, observation and decision-making while exploring maritime heritage and skills in a dynamic hands-on environment. Team-building games, rigging, knot tying, tool use and demonstrations are preparation for sailing adventures and boat construction. Our talented and dedicated team of instructors are US Sailing, First Aid and CPR certified. Intermediate SailingLearn new skills and knowledge such as pointing and footing, getting out of irons, overboard recovery, laylines and Rules of the Road. This is the next step for those who know the basics of sailing and are ready to sail an El Toro solo. Intermediate Sailing refines observation and problem-solving skills while continuing to build confidence and independence. Sailors who complete US Sailing’s “Little Red Book” skills during Intermediate Sailing will earn an El Toro Livery Card enabling them to continue sailing on their own!

Grad School: Advanced SailingSailors in Grad School take the helm of our gaff-rigged Beetle Cat, marconi-rigged Lightning, spritsail and lug-rigged sloops. Apply the skills learned in Beginning and Intermediate Sailing to larger boats, while building confidence and teamwork. Sailors will learn: seamanship and knot tying, understanding wind, current, weather and land effects, navigation and emergency procedures. Boat handling skills include steering with the sails, roll tacking, jibing, rowing, advanced upwind and downwind sailing. Students who complete US Sailing’s “Little Red Book” skills during Grad School will earn a Cat Boat or Sloop Livery Card enabling them to continue sailing on their own!

Voyaging Puget Sound with Seattle AquariumTravel by longboat with sailing and science instructors from The Center for Wooden Boats and the Seattle Aquarium. In this week-long camp, including an overnight on the shores of Blake Island, you will work with your team to chart your course across Puget Sound, conduct science experiments at sea and present your research at the Aquarium. Our expedition focuses on leadership, teamwork and communication while having fun and gaining technical skill in sailing, rowing or paddling and field observations of our marine environment.

Seafaring Adventure Camp with MOHAIEmbark on a seafaring adventure this summer at Lake Union Park! This week-long camp will occur on land and in boats on the waters of Lake Union, where campers will explore life on board a ship, the science of steam powered engines, navigation, model sail boat building, and more. Lake Union History Afl oatLake Union History Afloat offers students a unique opportunity to connect classroom learning with hands-on experience. Each grade-specific module includes a shore-based activity and a chance to paddle as a group to a related site of historical significance on Lake Union. Each program is designed to support Washington State and Seattle Public Schools curricula in history, science and art. Choose the module that best fits the interest and age group of your classroom.

What Floats Your Boat? Exploring Buoyancy Learn all about how boats float by exploring the concepts of buoyancy and displacement. Each student will build their own wooden toy boat and have a chance to float it, raise it and lower it in our model drydock (a floating dock used to pull boats out of the water for maintenance). Then we’ll travel by boat on Lake Union to see full-sized boats and the real, working drydock at Lake Union Drydock. Founded in 1916, it is one of the oldest businesses in Seattle

Native SeattleLong before the city grew up around it, Lake Union was a bustling hub of activity for Coast Salish communities; native culture still thrives here today. Students will explore elements of Coast Salish art and design through hands-on activities and crafts, learn Salish names for sites of historical significance in Seattle and travel on Lake Union in a native watercraft.

We provide hands-on educational opportunities year-round for students from pre-school through high school. Jumbo Field Trip Bring your group of up to 60 students to CWB where they'll learn to use traditional hand tools and construct a toy boat that they can take home with them. 30 students at a time will build toy boats while the other 30 students enjoy a self-guided tour of Lake Union Park and the Historic Ships Wharf.

Tools and Tales Explore our docks and listen to stories about boats, maritime culture and the environment. After storytime each child gets hands-on experience with traditional hand tools while building their own wooden toy boats to take home.

Steamboat Storytime Come and explore the historic Steamship Virgina V, hear some stories on the passenger deck, see the still functional original steam engine and check out the view from the Wheelhouse.

Umiaq Adventure Umiaqs have been built by Arctic civilizations for over 5,000 years. Students will work together as a team to paddle one of these traditional skin-boats. They'll also learn how to use hand tools and build a wooden toy boat to take home.

Model Boat DesignCome learn how sailboats are designed and how they work. Then build your own model boat and sail it on Lake Union Park’s model boat pond! Emphasis is placed on basic math, physics and boat design concepts.

Job Skills Training ProgramYoung Adults from low income or underserved backgrounds can apply to be Job Skills Crew Members. Crew members will participate in a formal employment training program at CWB. Crew members will learn how to conduct effective job searches, write professional resumes and cover letters and present themselves in a professional manner to potential employers. In addition to these employment skills crew members will receive instruction in woodworking and boatbuilding.

We empower youth to pursue their full potential by providing challenging physical and mental experiences in wooden small craft. Youth Development and Service Learning programs focus on leadership, teamwork and communication skills while having fun and gaining technical skill in sailing, rowing or paddling.

Out of School Youth Programs for GroupsJoin us in providing groups of students with dynamic, hands-on programs that extend learning beyond the traditional school day. CWB can work with you to design a program in which students have fun in an outdoor setting while developing self-confidence, patience, teamwork and decision making skills.

Our programs promote teamwork and empower young people by building confidence through competence.

High School Program AssistantParticipants will work directly with our wooden boats and the people who use them. Choose to learn about traditional sail and row boats; help teach Youth Sailing; help maintain our fleet, or assist with Livery.

Northwest Seaport, a maritime heritage organization, shares the history and stories of National Historic Landmark vessels docked at the Historic Ships Wharf in Lake Union Park, Seattle. For all programs on this page, visit www.nwseaport.org or phone 206-447-9800 with inquires.

Tugboat ExperienceOvernight aboard Arthur Foss for an immersive hands-on experience. Individuals, families and groups learn about its classic American story, neighboring historic vessels, and Lake Union’s environs in the heart of modern Seattle.

Participants receive an orientation and tour from engine room to wheelhouse. Overnighters take advantage of standard 20th century tugboat crew amenities, including flush toilets, hot showers and amazing local views of Lake Union. Plan on bringing/making meals (or eating out) and other overnight necessities. Fresh linens and wool blankets provided.

Whether overnighting for one, two or more nights, the Arthur Foss overnight education program provides a slice of Puget Sound maritime history with accommodations.

Volunteer work partiesWork Parties get you into maritime heritage and sometimes grease or sawdust at the Historic Ships Wharf. Join other Northwest Seaport volunteers aboard Lightship No. 83 Swiftsure , Arthur Foss and troller Twil ight for getting things done and working for fun. Adults and supervised youth welcome. Complete Seaport’s online volunteer application form to get started.

Maritime Music ProgramsMaritime music includes sea chanteys (work songs), forebitters (leisure songs), and tunes from the diverse countries and cultures of mariners themselves. Sea Chanteys and other maritime music celebrate our connections to the sea, boats, and those who sail them. They include work songs and foc’sle ditties with great choruses that tie our present day maritime traditions and lore to those of the past. The call-and-response form makes these songs easy to learn and fun to sing for adults and children alike. Come and lead a song of the sea or just join in on the chorus.

Events include monhtly chantey sings, maritime concerts, and stories of the sea. Most events are free. See website for details.
