Glorious Revolution
• Cheering crowds welcome Charles II back to England as king.
• Super popular ruler, got rid of Puritan regulations.
Charles II

science, art, architecture and literature
Glorious Revolution
• Charles II’s brother James II inherits the throne
• Super Catholic and scared Parliament…
• Parliament asks his Protestant daughter Mary and her husband to come to England and take over, James II fled…
English Bill of Rights
• Before Parliament let Mary and William become rulers… they had to accept the Bill of Rights
• It guaranteed:• No parliament interference
• No catholic on the throne
• Traditional citizens rights
Limited Monarchy
• The Glorious Revolution turned England into a limited monarchy
• The king or queen’s powers were now checked by a Parliament.
• John Locke was a part of all this.
Constitutional Government
• Three new political creations arise:• Political parties• Cabinets• Prime minister
• These are results of a new constitutional government (rule by law)
Political Parties
• 2 major parties in England:• Tories – aristocrats who supported tradition
• Whigs – favor parliament over crown, more progressive
Cabinet System
• George I became king, he couldn’t speak English
• He needed advisors to help him run the country, they met in small room (cabinet)
• Soon the positions became official
• Used in many countries (US)
Prime Minister
• Head of the cabinet
• Usually head of the majority party in House of Commons
• Soon became more powerful than the monarchy
• First was Robert Walpole.
Oligarchy
• During this time period, England was an oligarchy, where it is ruled by a few people
• Voting was quite corrupt and many people had very little say in the government.
• Middle Class people begin to look for a way out… Industrial Revolution.
