FOREWORD
The Lutheran Hymnal (TLH) served congregations of the Wisconsin EvangelicalLutheran Synod from 1941 to 1993. In 1993 Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal(CW) took its place as the primary hymnal in the church body. It was the consensus ofthose who worked on the “new” hymnal that it should not serve for as many years asTLH. It was the vision of those committee members and the WELS Commission onWorship that a hymnal should serve 25 to 30 years. Over the course of that many years,worship resources change and worship practice in the church body might change as well.
Christian Worship: Supplement (CWS) is making its appearance in 2008, 15 years afterthe production of CW, or “midway” between hymnals. Already there have beensignificant changes in the worship resources available. Producing a supplement is a wayto take advantage of such changes and to assist worshipers, worship planners, andworship leaders in making use of these new resources.
The work on this supplement began in 2003. The Hymnal Supplement Committee,appointed by WELS Commission on Worship, set the course for its work with a missionstatement that reflects the changing landscape in worship while at the same time makes itclear that the path forward would build on the theology, resources, and practice of ourhistory. The committee worked under this charter:
The work of the committee is to prepare a supplement to Christian Worship thatwill assist worshipers and worship planners by providing them with a resource that
a. reflects worship as proclamation of the gospel.b. affirms the liturgical and historic practice of the church.c. provides an expanded repertoire of liturgical materials and hymnody.d. represents the best of a variety of musical genres appropriate for worship. e. intends to unify worship. f. is balanced, allowing worship to be both contextual and countercultural.g. is beneficial to and usable by WELS members at church and at home.
The result of working from this mission statement is an expanded landscape ofworship materials.
• One of the projects for this book was to provide an alternate set of readingsfor the First and Second Lessons in the three-year lectionary. These alternatereadings coincide thematically with the Gospel Lessons.
• Two musical settings of the historic liturgy are included. One is a through-composed version. The second picks up Martin Luther’s idea of a hymn-based liturgy.
• Gathering Rites that focus on Baptism and on the Word are intended to serveas alternate beginnings to Divine Service I or Divine Service II.
• The section of Psalms expands the selection of psalms, provides new refrainsand psalm tones, and includes some refrains that are closely tied to majorfestivals in the church year.
• A set of Meditations (devotions) is provided for use in church, school,and home.
In the area of hymnody, the landscape of musical and textual expression is broadened.
• Authors of hymn texts and composers of hymn tunes that have come to lightsince 1993 are represented.
• Hymns from many different eras and in various musical styles are included.
• Some hymns are more suited to organ accompaniment while others are moresuited to piano accompaniment. Still others work with either or with guitaraccompaniment.
• Alternate settings and resources that may be added to the hymns for variety(e.g. descants and instrumental parts) are available in the AccompanimentEdition and/or on the Accompaniment CD-ROM.
• Notes about the hymns and suggestions for singing the hymns are a new featurefound in the Accompaniment Edition.
The mode of publication also reflects a changed landscape. Along with the hard copyPew Edition, the Electronic Pew Edition of the book is available to provide as manymaterials as possible for use in an electronic age.
The goal of this publication is the same as that of Christian Worship: A LutheranHymnal. In the introduction to CW, project director Kurt J. Eggert wrote, “The goalwas to deliver to the church a strongly Christ-centered book.” That is also the goal ofthose who worked on this book and the goal of the WELS Commission on Worship.Through these resources, may the Word of Christ be proclaimed among us and mayGod continue to do his good work among us through that proclamation.
Christ, the Alpha and Omega; Christ, the firstborn from the dead;Christ, the life and resurrection; Christ, the Church’s glorious head:Praise and thanks and adoration And unending worship beTo the Father and the Spirit And to you eternally. (CWS 750)

CONFESSION OF SINS
Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sinsto God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grantus forgiveness.
The congregation may kneel.
Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I havedisobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil andfailed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and ineternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior JesusChrist, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Notes1. Be careful of hymn tune overlap. Try to avoid choosing hymn tunes for these
canticles if the tune is already being used in connection with one of the hymns in theservice. For example:
• If you use DUKE STREET for the Gloria on Easter Sunday, you might not want tosing all of CW 152, “I Know that My Redeemer Lives,” since people would besinging the same tune for both.
• If you use OLD HUNDREDTH for the Gloria, you should avoid singing CW 233,286, 316, 323, or 334 elsewhere in the service, since all five hymns use thesame tune.
2. If you find an engaging hymn tune for one of these canticles that might be unfamiliarto the people of your congregation, consider taking the time to teach it. Let them hearit played by an instrumentalist or sung by a soloist or choir for a few weeks beforeyou invite them to sing it.
3. For variety, make use of special singers, choirs, or instruments for any CW descants,or to double the melody line. For a festive effect during Easter or on Pentecost,consider using more elaborate accompaniments, possibly with brass instrument(s) forthe Gloria and Sanctus, or a descanting wind instrument for the Nunc Dimittis. Suchaccompaniments could be used on select stanzas.

DIVINE SERVICE II
*The Scriptures teach that the celebration of the Lord’s Supper connects us intimately with Christ and with oneanother as Christians who are united around a common confession of faith.†The Nunc Dimittis (“Now dismiss”) is also known as the “Song of Simeon.” Through God’s Word andSacrament, we have seen Jesus Christ, and like Simeon we find divine peace and comfort through faith inthe Savior.‡The blessing of Aaron has been spoken over God’s people for over 3,500 years. The Lord said, “So they willput my name on [them], and I will bless them” (Numbers 6:27).
2 All glory to the Father,All glory to the Son,
All glory to the Spirit,Forever three in one;
For as in the beginning,Is now, shall ever be,
God’s triune name resoundingThrough all eternity.
1 O Lord, now let your servantDepart in peace, assured:
For I have seen your promisedincarnate, saving Word—
A Light that will enlightenAll gloom where Gentiles dwell;
The brilliant, crowning gloryOf those in Israel!

Zion, at Your Shining Gates 701Text (st. 1, 3-5): Benjamin H. Kennedy, 1804–1889, alt.Text (st. 2): Michael Schultz, b. 1963 © 2006 Michael Schultz. All rights reserved. Used by permission.

Benjamin H. Kennedy was born in 1804 in Summerhill, England. His father was anAnglican pastor. Kennedy attended St. John’s College, Cambridge, and was laterappointed there as a professor of Greek in 1867. He received an honorary doctor ofdivinity by royal mandate in 1886.
The tune COVENANT CHURCH was written by K. Lee Scott. He has emerged as one ofAmerica’s foremost composers of music for the church. He has published more than threehundred compositions including anthems, hymns, works for solo voice, organ, brass, andmajor works.
Singing the Hymn
h = 72
Feeling the pulse in 3/2 will help bring the melody to life. Be certain to allow the con-gregation at least one beat of breath at cadences. Do this by observing a quarter restwithin the whole notes rather than extending them.
This hymn is especially appropriate on the First Sunday of Advent, but it would also makea lovely anthem that could easily be sung by a group of children on Palm Sunday. Anotherpossibility would be to substitute this hymn for Psalm 24 when it appears in the lectionary.

This text was written by Jaroslav Vajda to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the ordinationof Theodore Schneider, pastor of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Lancaster,Pennsylvania. Written on January 24, 1984, it was first used on Trinity Sunday, June 17,1984. Vajda himself comments on his text with these words:
I was pleased to write a text that would explore more of the implications ofthe Incarnation than are ordinarily found in Christmas texts; for example, thecommunion that takes place in the Sacrament of the Altar, and the incor-poration of believers into the Body of Christ. One is dealing with the veryessence of Christianity, in which the Incarnation is absolutely essential to theworld’s redemption and the union of the creature with the Creator andRedeemer. The repetition of Immanuel is meant to impress its literal meaningon the singer of the hymn with its numerous implications.
Singing the Hymn
q = 68
An alternate accompaniment is provided along with its instrumental descant. Thecomposer, Jeremy Bakken, suggests the following uses for this accompaniment:
Stanza 1: honor the dotted ties (i.e., make them ties), play only the melody in theright hand.
Stanza 2: honor the dotted ties, play the melody and harmony in the right hand.Stanza 3: do not honor the dotted ties, play the melody and harmony in the right
hand.Stanza 4: same as stanza 3 with the descant (flute, violin).
