President’s Message

Newsletter Editor Sandy Secor, [email protected], 214-914-1638

Dear KidneyTexas Members,

It has been a very difficult year not being able to meet in person and social distance. Covid-19 has changed the face of fundraising and altered our ability to be together in person. Board meetings have been Zoom meetings and now our luncheon will be held virtually.

Each fall KidneyTexas, Inc. hosts its Luncheon and Fashion Show in an effort to raise money for designated beneficiaries and awareness for a disease that affects

millions of people each year. Our virtual luncheon on September 22 will be viewed remotely.

I would like to thank Sharon Ballew, Luncheon Chair for all of her incredible hard work. She and Sharon Adams, Jan Strimple and Nerissa von Helpenstill have come up with an incredibly innovative luncheon. Sharon and Mari Epperson have created novel and unique raffle items! Emilynn Wilson has worked very hard on underwriting and done a fabulous job. I am so proud of our KidneyTexas Board for voting to support Sharon and continue this event albeit virtually. Thank you for supporting our Runway Report luncheon. It is very important that you make your donations and purchase your luncheon tickets by Monday, September 7. That allows us time to print the programs and plan the logistics of meal delivery. This is certainly a unique year.

Debilitating kidney diseases impact approximately 20 million people in the United States today. Groups at high risk include African Americans, Hispanics, senior citizens and people with diabetes. In Texas, there are over 30,000 people on dialysis and 4,000 on a transplant list.

Since 1999, the dedicated volunteers of KidneyTexas, Inc. have worked in tandem with our generous underwriters to raise over $3.7 million for local efforts to improve the ability to diagnose and manage kidney disease. We are essential to the fight against kidney disease. The funds we raise benefit local hospital and research institutions in their vital work. Over the last few years we have provided funding for medical research in kidney disease; dialysis machines; provided two VGO Robots in an East Texas satellite clinic of the Methodist Dallas Transplant Institute for patients to be able to visit with their physician. We have helped provide essential psychosocial support through the Child Life Program for patients being treated for renal and kidney diseases, as well as their parents and siblings.

In past years we have provided funding for Twice Blessed House, offering patients and their caregivers temporary and affordable housing during the entire transplant process at Baylor Hospital. We have provided funding to Parkland Hospital for the KidneyTexas kidney dialysis unit. Annually we fund 80 – 100 children for a week Camp Reynal, a camp for children suffering kidney disease that provides the camp experience at Camp John Marc. At Camp Reynal they can attend camp like other children and still receive dialysis and medical care.
