Management ExperienceFrom 1990-1994 as Project Leader / Principal Investigator of the project ""African cereal stem borers:Economic importance, taxonomy, natural enemies and control" based at the Dept of Entomology,Wageningen Agricultural University in Holland, I led a team of six scientists to complete this projectsuccessfully. Outputs included two books (see publication list below), training courses in Anglophoneand Francophone Africa and development of two databases that are still in use. From 1994 to 1998, as Head of the Agricultural Entomology section of the International Institute ofEntomology, I instigated several research programmes in agricultural entomology, and negotiatedseveral successful grant applications (see below). During this period I line-managed two seniorscientists (Dr Gary Stonedahl and Dr Zhi-Qiang Zhang), and Mr Luis Hernandez-Triana to provide anillustrated revision of African anthocorid predatory bugs. This phase of my employment demandedconsiderable intraorganisational liaison with other CABI units, in particular Biological Control (IIBC),BioNET INTERNATIONAL, and the African Regional Office in Nairobi. I continue to supervise PhDstudents and postdocs, either through Imperial College or the Royal Society (see below) and I employMr Geoffrey Kibby as a part-time technician and illustrator, and Mr David Oliver as a databaseconsultant, on several different projects. Jan. 2004-Dec 2007 I was Executive Secretary of ICZN, withmanagement responsibilities for five members of staff, Dr Simon Coppard, Dr Catherine MacDonald,Mrs Solene Morris, Dr Svetlana Nikolaeva and Mr Jeremy Smith as well as several volunteers.
