He has been actively involved in national and internationally funded research on several topics related to dementia, including epidemiologic surveys, needs assessment (e.g. validation of the Camberwell Assessment of Need for the Elderly in Portugal) and caregiving/family interventions. Prevalence of old age neuropsychiatric disorders: Contribution to mental health policy in Portugal – The 10/66 Dementia Research Group Prevalence Study in Portugal. Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, Portugal, 2011-2014; ref. PTDC/SAU-EPI/113652/2009, 2011-2014 (PI: M. Xavier).

Portuguese collaboration in the EDUCA III study (Instituto de Investigaciones Psiquiátricas – Sisters Hospitallers) [Study of the efficacy of a psychosocial intervention on the prevention of family burden in schizophrenia and schizo-affective disorder]. This was a multicentre Project in Spain and Portugal. Central coordination: Manuel Martín Carrasco (Clínica Padre Menni, Pamplona – Instituto de Investigaciones Psiquiátricas), in collaboration with Universidade do País Basco (UPV-EHU) / Group of Evidence-based Psychiatry (coord.
