BIOGRAPHY

Loo Huck Soo received his B.Eng.(Hons) in Mechanical Engineering, MBA and Ph.D. in the Business and Management field. He is an Associate Professor at Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia. He is also a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Malaysia, a Chartered Mechanical Engineer awarded by Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) (Patron Her Majesty The Queen) London, a Chartered Engineer (CEng) registered with Engineering Council of the UK, a Fellow Member of Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) and a Fellow Member of IMechE London. He has 12 years industrial experience, holding various positions from Trainee Mechanical Engineer, Assistant Mechanical Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Production Engineer, Production Control Engineer, Assistant to Plant Manager to Service Manager in local and multinational companies. In the academic field, he has served Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FKM) of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) for almost 25 years. He is currently supervising several Master and PhD students, published numerous international refereed journal papers, presented numerous proceeding papers, and delivered a number of keynote speeches in international conferences locally and abroad. As a Principal Investigator (PI) engaging in multidisciplinary research, he received several national research grants, and won numerous national and international invention awards including IID 2008 & 2009 Gold Awards (Malaysia), iidex 2014 Gold Award (Malaysia), International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2008) Gold Medal, Best Invention Award in International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2008) and Belgium Brussels-Eureka (Europe) Gold Medal. He has filed three patents in Malaysia as a key inventor, and is currently making an attempt to file another.

STATEMENT OF LOO HUCK SOO’S INDUSTRIAL EXPERIEN CE (1980 – 1991)

In 1980, Loo HS entered the working industry to start his mechanical engineering career at Associated Pan Malaysia Cement Sdn Bhd (APMC) as a Trainee Mechanical Engineer. His training areas encompassed the entire cement manufacturing plant ranging from maintenance of limestone crushing machineries at the quarry to final packing operations at

the cement works. He was then confirmed as an Assistant Mechanical Engineer and further promoted to the post of Mechanical Engineer. Throughout his years in APMC, Loo HS was involved not only in engineering projects and machine maintenance activities in both the wet and dry process cement plants, but also in planning, coordinating and improving the efficiency of the running of mobile plant (covering mobile machineries, cement tankers, lorries and wagons), water and air services plant as well as maintenance of building services within the entire cement works.

Loo HS developed a great interest in air conditioning and ventilation systems while in APMC. As such, in 1984, he joined Group Associated Engineers (GAE) Sdn Bhd’s subsidiary. GAE-Trane Sdn Bhd, a company manufacturing large scale TRANE (USA) air conditioning and ventilation equipment. As a Production Engineer at the time, He was involved in the manufacturing of full range air handling units (AHU), mechanical and electrical variable-air-volume (VAV) devices, fan-coil units (FCU), air cooled packaged units (ACPU), water cooled packaged units (WCPU) as well as assembling centrifugal chillers from CKD. He was promoted to the post of Production Control Engineer soon after his confirmation of employment to take charge of quality, productivity and cost effectiveness. Subsequently, he was assigned to shoulder a heavier responsibility by assuming the position of Assistant to Plant Manager in 1985 with a particular responsibility on productive maintenance.

In mid 1985, Loo HS was further promoted to the portfolio of Service Manager in GAE Parts & Service Sdn Bhd, another subsidiary of GAE Group of companies. His job functions included planning and execution of Warranty Service, Maintenance Service, Breakdown Repair as well as Testing & Commissioning of full range air conditioning and ventilation systems comprising water cooled chillers, air-cooled chillers, cooling towers, water pumps, air handling units, fan-coil units, air-cooled split units, ventilation fans, pressurisation fans, pneumatic systems, valves assembly and variable-air-volume devices. During those years in office, from 1985 to 1988, he completed Testing & Commissioning of many building projects throughout Malaysia. These included Pusat Islam (KL), AMD (Penang), Petronas (Port Dickson), Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT building, KL), UUM (Jitra, Kedah), Merlin Inn (Penang), Komtar Phase II (Penang), UTM (Skudai, Johor), UMBC (Sabah), MAS HQ (KL), MPPJ Tower (Petaling Jaya), Bank Negara (KL), Motorola (Petaling Jaya), Eastern Garment (Penang), Inviron (Penang), Rubber Research Institute (KL), Pernas International Hotel Properties (KL), MUIS (Sabah), Wisma Desa (KL), Regent Hotel (Penang), Central Market (KL), Kelab Darul Ehsan (Ampang, KL), Subang Twin Tower (Subang), Menara Boustead (KL), Perangsang Plaza (Shah Alam) and Plaza TTDI (KL).

In 1989, Loo HS joined a multi-national company, York (Malaysia) Sales & Service Sdn Bhd as a Service Manager. Through his wide exposure and practical knowledge and experience in full range air conditioning systems and services, he was awarded by YORK International (USA) the certificate of “YORK Certified Field Service Engineer” in 1990.

In 1991, Loo HS withdrew himself from the corporate sector and joined the academic world to share knowledge and experience with the next generation of engineers.
