Professional Accomplishments

In recognition of my contribution to knowledge in linguistics in general and discourse studies in

particular, I have been invited to regularly review papers for some reputable language and

communication journals such as Journal of Computer, Mediated Communication (A Wiley-Blackwell

Journal) and New Media & Society (A Sage Journal). I am also currently in the editorial boards of

Linguistik Online (a long standing online language journal based in Berne, Switzerland) and

International Journal of Language, Society and Culture, based in Australia. In 2010, I facilitated,

supervised the publication of articles in an edition of Linguistik Online 43, 3/2010

My papers on digital discourse are mostly pioneering ones, since the online discourse

culture as well as the application of discourse analytic methods to online interactions is still

relatively new to the Nigerian and African discourse terrains. This brought me into contact with IGI

Global, a top publisher of Information Science books, based in New York, USA, which invited me to

edit a book, which I titled: Handbook of Discourse Behavior and Digital Communication: Language,

Structure and Social Interaction. This two-volume book stands out as an impressive collection of 56

scholarly papers written by 82 top scholars from different educational institutions in the world.

In 2008, I won the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship and while on the

fellowship, I worked extensively on digital discourse behaviour of Nigerians. I was able to compile a

corpus of Nigerian Computer-mediated English Discourse from which I was able to draw samples

from discussion and online news feedback forums, chats, blogs and SMS for analysis in my papers.

As a visiting lecturer on sabbatical at Covenant University, Ota, I organized the International

Conference on Human Development (ICHD), the first international conference to be held in that

university. The conference brought together scholars from different parts of the world. In

recognition of this well-organized conference, I won ‘Covenant University award on Outstanding

Contribution towards the University’s External Impact Drive” in the 2004/2005 academic session.

Contribution to Knowledge

My research activities have focused mainly on text/discourse analysis and lexical studies. My academic research efforts commenced with an interest in problems of lexical collocation in Nigerian English as a Second Language (ESL) pupils’ written compositions. An empirical research on this led to the production of a doctoral thesis, which was later developed into a book and published in Germany some years after completing the thesis. In addition six articles in journals and chapters in edited books were also published. All the publications addressed various issues arising from the challenges non-native second language learners have with lexical usage and suggested various practical pedagogical ways on how teachers can help them to overcome the challenges. Much later in my academic career life, my research focus shifted mainly to discourse and text analyses, where I worked on the application of the analytic methods in text linguistics, discourse analysis and critical discourse analysis to different kinds of texts. I examined specifically textual and contextual properties of media texts, mainly those of newspaper headlines, news reports and advertisements. In collaboration with two colleagues, I edited a book on Media Discourse titled Perspectives on Media Discourse. This book brought together both applied and theoretical papers written by scholars from Europe, USA and Africa on different aspects of media discourse, such as news, headlines, advertisements and editorials. The common concern in the papers relates to the linguistic influence, and the cultural power of the mass media in the modern world. Authors’ approaches include conversation analysis, linguistic and sociolinguistic analysis, pragmatic analysis, critical discourse analysis, social semiotic analysis, content analysis and social-cognitive analysis.

My investigation of discourse practices took me mainly to the areas of religious, political, medical and market discourse. Specifically I investigated tenor relationships and the use of interrogation in Pentecostal discourse and found that media discourse has highly distinctive style with respect to how social roles and relationships are enacted and how interrogatives are used as markers of discourse control and sustenance by Pentecostal pulpit preachers. In addition, I investigated cultural diversity and multilingualism in Pentecostal discourse. In my study of political and medical discourses, I dwelt on the strategies for power enactment and legitimization. All the papers that arose from these studies reveal the peculiar textual and contextual features of the discourse types.

A new area of research I have been exploring in the last five years is how the digital and global age has been shaping discursive practices in Nigeria. My publications, which are mostly pioneering ones from Nigeria, have examined the forms and functions of Nigerian text messages, the influence of technology-mediated discourse on language maintenance and shift,

Page 21: CV for CU Website (January 2014).pdf

21 CV of Professor Olurotimi Taiwo

teaching and learning of English as a Second Language, and interpersonal social responsibility. These studies have shown how specific and uniquely Nigerian linguistic and cultural symbols are deployed in asynchronous textual practices on mobile phones.

In my pursuit of this research focus on technology-mediated discourse, I have won the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt post-doctoral research fellowship, which I used at the Department of English, University of Freiburg, Germany between September, 2008 and August, 2009. During the fellowship, I edited a two-volume book titled Handbook of Discourse Behavior and Digital Communication: Language, Structure and Social Interaction. The book, published by Information Science Reference, New York, is a compendium of 56 scholarly chapters on discourse behavior in digital communication. The chapters were written by 82 top researchers from 48 institutions that spread across America, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Oceanic. These chapters cover different aspects of computer-mediated communication, such as electronic mail, instant message, chat, discussion forum, blog, video conferencing, You Tube, web-based learning and SMS, as well as aspects of behaviour typically associated with online discourse like flaming, scamming, trolling, cyber-bullying, language mixing, repelling and creativity. Approaches of these scholars vary as well as their backgrounds. However, the approaches blend in their descriptions of the different linguistic behavior and forms used in socializing through digital discourse. Some of the aspects of discourse behavior covered in the book are identity construction, politeness and face works, rhetorical strategies humor and language play, gender, power and ideology construction, and so forth.
