Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) is integral to the communities of Northeast Ohio. The Tri-C Public Safety Center of Excellence aligns with regional economic development efforts to offer in-demand programming and integrated pathways between workforce and academic programs, giving students more options for learning and future careers.
From now until 2023, experts project that more than 20,000 protective service employees in Northeast Ohio will need to be replaced. Tri-C trains more emergency response professionals than any other institution in Ohio, and the Public Safety Center of Excellence is committed to remaining a regional leader in public safety training to help fill those vacancies.
Tri-C has always valued innovation and creativity and served as a leader in addressing the region’s workforce needs. The Public Safety Center of Excellence has created programs specifically to fill employment shortages, such as the dispatch training program, as well as programs like Blue Courage that equip students and professionals with the tools they need to perform at the highest level.
All programs within the Public Safety Center of Excellence offer hands-on training from industry professionals to prepare students for their careers in the field. The majority of classes take place at the state-of-the-art KeyBank Public Safety Training Center on the College’s Western Campus.

Course Description: Tri‐C’s Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission (OPOTC)-certified program is for individuals seeking employment as a police officer in the state of Ohio. The academy is also open to individuals who have been sworn with a department and need to complete their Peace Officer Basic Training. This paramilitary-structured academy includes all OPOTC-mandated training in addition to taser operator certification, active shooter training and first aid/CPR certifications.
Other Information: Maximum class size: 30 Visit tri-c.edu/police to apply. Cost of state exam is covered in tuition. If the student fails the first attempt, the student is responsible for the $95 retest.

Course Description: This OPOTC-certified training academy fulfills basic training requirements per AC Section 109:2-9-02(A) for new or newly assigned correctional staff.Gain the skills necessary to become a professional correctional officer. Seven units of discussion include administration, legal, jail security, human relations, medical overview, subject control techniques and first aid/CPR/AED. Written and practical skill tests administered throughout. Upon completion, participants will be qualified to take the state exam.Note: Workout clothing is necessary for subject control skills.

Course Description: This course combines classroom and hands-on training to cover the basic skills, knowledge and abilities needed to successfully meet the demands of this critical work.Curriculum builds on foundational topics such as communication skills, call-taking and radio techniques and incorporates the most up-to-date information on technology and work- related issues in public safety communications centers.Hands-on training consists of keyboarding; listening and responding to actual 911 and non-emergency calls; skill-building exercises in listening, multitasking, information gathering and decision making; entering calls using computer aided dispatching (CAD); and dispatching and clearing calls.
Other Information: This course provides state-mandated training to prepare students to enter the field of 911 dispatching. Those who successfully pass the final exam receive certification demonstrating completion of a training course that meets and exceeds industry-accepted national basic training standards.

Course Description: This interactive training addresses the need for an understanding of trauma-informed approaches to those whom the community law enforcement professional serves.The goal is to increase the understanding of trauma, create an awareness of the impact of trauma on behavior, and help develop trauma-informed responses.Participants will explore issues of vicarious trauma within the law enforcement community and provide suggestions on how to promote sustainable practices that may mitigate the effects of vicarious trauma.

Course Description: This one-day course for new or experienced supervisors assists departments in reducing liability issues. Classroom instruction includes training in elements of pursuit management, policy decisions, Ohio Revised Code, constitutional issues, multi-jurisdictions, pursuit issues and pursuit case studies.

First Aid/CPR/AED
Length: 8 hours

Course Description: This video-based, instructor-led course teaches critical skills needed to respond to and manage an emergency until EMS arrives, including first aid; choking relief in adults, children and infants; and addressing sudden cardiac arrest in adults, children and infants.Course uses American Heart Association’s research-proven “practice while watching” technique, in which instructors observe students, provide feedback and guide learning.
Other Information: This course is for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in CPR and AED to meet job, regulatory or other requirements. Participants receive First Aid/CPR/AED certification upon completion.

Course Description: A Trauma Informed Response to Sexual Assault is a victim emphasized training approach to help law enforcement officers understand the trauma a victim of sexual assault may endure physically, emotionally and mentally. The training also provides law enforcement officers with information related to what community partners and resources are available and the roles of those entities. The training will help investigative law enforcement officers better strategize how to best assist victims of sexual assault by way of a Trauma Informed Response.

OPOTC Peace Officer Refresher
Length: 16 hours

Course Description: This training is required for persons reappointed as peace officers on or after Jan. 1, 1989, who have had a break in service of more than one but less than four years. Course meets the requirements described in Section 109: 2-1-12(D) of the Ohio Administrative Code.
Other Information: Participants must provide a copy of their determination letter prior to the start of class and will be required to take the state exam at an OPOTC facility approximately two weeks after the course concludes.Course requires a minimum of 10 people to run.

Police Urban Mountain Bicycle
Length: 105 hours

Course Description: This physically and mentally demanding training course combines emergency vehicle operations for bike officers with patrol procedures, tactics, night operations, scenarios and basic bike maintenance and on-the-road repairs. Learn to ride like a pro, avoid crashes and use your bike to foil the bad guys every time. Off-road riding and bike-specific live-fire exercises may be added at the instructor’s discretion.Participants must attend all class dates and pass written and practical examinations to receive a certificate of completion.
Other Information: Participants must be law enforcement officers in good physical condition, with basic bicycle-handling skills.Those who successfully complete this course will receive an IPMBA Police Cyclist membership.

Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Update

Course Description: This course focuses on SFST review, proper mechanics and updated wording in regards to test administration. New case laws will be discussed, along with a review of drugged-driver identification. Course includes practical training (live drinking).

Traffic Crash Report (OH-1) Refresher

Course Description: This course expands the investigative skills of the basic patrol officer so that they can investigate an accident scene when a technical investigator or accident reconstructionist unavailable. Topics include photographing, marking, documenting, measuring and diagramming the collision scene.

Advanced Defensive Training for LEOs
Length: 8 hours

Dates: June 10 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Course Description: This course offers a safe but vigorous cardio endurance workout while providing tactical techniques for subject control. Officers will be tested on their physical ability to perform in highly stressful and physical situations and altercations. Emphasis is placed on breathing techniques while performing different subject control methods. Officers will utilize proper force while maintaining controlled breathing and emotions and limiting injury or death by keeping the warrior mindset.

Advanced PT Training for LEOs

Course Description: This course offers a safe but vigorous workout that challenges officers physically, mentally and spiritually. Participants learn the importance of maintaining cardiorespiratory aerobic fitness as a law enforcement officer while focusing on muscular endurance, core exercises, flexibility and stretching, and coordination and balance training.

Police Physical Agility Exam

Course Description: The Police Physical Agility Exam is conducted for numerous police departments throughout Northeast Ohio. The exam measures participants’ fitness performance as it relates to the law enforcement profession.
Other Information: A certificate of completion will be emailed two business days after successful completion of the exam, based on Cooper’s Standard. Participants are responsible for providing the agency/agencies they are testing for with a copy of the certificate. Test scores will be forwarded to the agency upon request. Certificates and scores may be valid for up to one year, depending on agency standards.

Tactical Baton Training

Course Description: This basic user training course for police and security officers teaches handling and application techniques of the tactical baton, focusing on the blocking and striking capabilities of the straight expandable baton. Techniques include stance, patterns of movement, baton grips and methods of carry, baton draws, blocks, strikes and baton retention.

Simulated Scenario Village
About the Village
Building A
The Village Training Center features the VirTra training simulator area, dispatch communications training room, indoor mat room, jail cell training area, classroom/multipurpose room (up to 80 people), command room and an observation patio.
Building B
This commercial front building includes single-story and two-story buildings joined along a connecting wall. The building comes equipped with moveable walls and a smoke system. Possible scenario configurations include, but are not limited to, storefront, office space and mixed-use space.
Building C
This commercial front building includes two two-story buildings and one three-story building joined along connecting walls. The building comes equipped with moveable walls. Possible scenario configurations include, but are not limited to, storefront, apartments and mixed-use space.
Building D
This canopy-covered building comes equipped with moveable walls. Possible scenario configurations include, but are not limited to, bank, gas station, drive-thru and ER.
Building E
