MEDIA RELEASE 11 Nile Street Port Adelaide SA 5015 P +618 8447 6211 www.vitalstatistix.com.au [email protected] November 2012 VITALS FAREWELL’S 2012 WITH A SITESPECIFIC AUDIO ADVENTURE Vitalstatistix is completing a very busy year with the next incarnation of Cutaway, its multiyear homage to Port Adelaide’s iconic Waterside Workers Hall. Waterside Workers Hall, originally built by the Waterside Workers Federation in 1926 and Vitals’ home since 1992, has been central to Port Adelaide’s cultural life for over eightyfive years. Cutaway is a threeyear arts project celebrating Vitals’ heritagelisted home by asking artists and community members to respond to Waterside’s history, spirit and place in the Port’s future. In its first year, 2011, Cutaway – an installation presented nine art works and a series of events inspired by Waterside’s history. 2012’s Cutaway – a portrait is a remarkable theatre and audio exploration of the presentday spirit of mischief that inhabits this much loved building. Vitals has commissioned acclaimed headphoneverbatim theatre maker Roslyn Oades to create Cutaway – a portrait with local community members and collaborating artists. Headphoneverbatim theatre is a unique process, where an ‘audioscript’ is created from interviews with reallife subjects. In performing the work, actors wear earpieces and literally adopt the words, breaths and speech mannerisms of another human being. What results is incredibly intimate and evocative storytelling, which propels an audience into a heightened state of listening. Roslyn’s work has been described as “astonishingly authentic” (The Australian). “You will seldom see theatre as vivid and as warm as this" said the Sydney Morning Herald. In 2012 she completed a trilogy of headphoneverbatim works that explore the theme of ‘acts of courage’. The second of the trilogy, Stories of Love & Hate, based around experiences of the 2005 Cronulla Riots, was critically acclaimed and remounted in Sydney Theatre Company’s 2011 program. The third work in the trilogy, I’m Your Man (which delves into the world of boxing) was a hit at this year’s Sydney Festival and has been picked up as one of two shows touring Australia in the 2013 Mobile States program. Adelaide audiences will see I’m Your Man as part of Vitals artistic program, next year.

         VITALS  FAREWELL’S  2012  WITH  A  SITE-SPECIFIC  AUDIO  ADVENTURE

Vitalstatistix  is  completing  a  very  busy  year  with  the  next  incarnation  of  Cutaway,  its  multi-‐year  homage  to  Port  Adelaide’s  iconic  Waterside  Workers  Hall.      Waterside  Workers  Hall,  originally  built  by  the  Waterside  Workers  Federation  in  1926  and  Vitals’  home  since  1992,  has  been  central  to  Port  Adelaide’s  cultural  life  for  over  eighty-‐five  years.      Cutaway  is  a  three-‐year  arts  project  celebrating  Vitals’  heritage-‐listed  home  by  asking  artists  and  community  members  to  respond  to  Waterside’s  history,  spirit  and  place  in  the  Port’s  future.  In  its  first  year,  2011,  Cutaway  –  an  installation  presented  nine  art  works  and  a  series  of  events  inspired  by  Waterside’s  history.      2012’s  Cutaway  –  a  portrait  is  a  remarkable  theatre  and  audio  exploration  of  the  present-day  spirit  of  mischief  that  inhabits  this  much  loved  building.  Vitals  has  commissioned  acclaimed  headphone-verbatim  theatre  maker  Roslyn  Oades  to  create  Cutaway  –  a  portrait  with  local  community  members  and  collaborating  artists.      Headphone-‐verbatim  theatre  is  a  unique  process,  where  an  ‘audio-‐script’  is  created  from  interviews  with  real-‐life  subjects. In  2012  she  completed  a  trilogy  of  headphone-‐verbatim  works  that  explore  the  theme  of  ‘acts  of  courage’.

For  Cutaway  –  a  portrait,  Roslyn  has  worked  with  recorded  interviews  of  locals  (collected  by  other  locals)  to  make  a  fascinating  portrait  of  cheekiness,  loyalty  and  independence.  Weaving  together  real-‐life  stories  from  some  of  the  Port’s  best  yarn  spinners,  we  invite  you  to  sit  close  and  listen.    The  central  performance  will  be  topped  and  tailed  by  beautiful  audio  art  works,  created  by  collaborating  artists  and  Waterside’s  resident  choir  Born  on  Monday,  making  for  a  three-‐part,  site-‐specific  audio  adventure.      Emma  Webb,  Vitalstatistix’s  Creative  Producer  and  curator  of  the  Cutaway  trilogy,  said  “This  year’s  Cutaway  doesn’t  tell  historical  tales  about  the  hall  itself.  It  situates  stories  from  current  day  Port  locals  within  the  hall,  evoking  a  spirit  that  continues  to  be  present  here.  And  it  will  ask  us  to  hear  the  sounds  of  the  hall.  With  such  a  rich  history  here,  it’s  actually  a  creative  challenge  to  find  a  way  to  explore  a  sense  of  now.  Listening  asks  us  to  be  present,  so  we  felt  that  an  audio-‐based  exploration  was  a  great  way  to  approach  this  year’s  iteration  of  Cutaway.”

“As  well  as  celebrating  Waterside  during  some  significant  landmarks  such  as  its  current  paintjob  and  restoration,  Cutaway  is  about  connecting  community-‐based  and  contemporary  art  making.  A  large  team  of  regular  and  guest  artists,  such  as  Roslyn  Oades,  have  collaborated  with  community-‐based  organisations  and  local  residents  to  realise  Cutaway  over  the  last  couple  of  years.  It  makes  for  authentic  and  compelling  theatre  and  art.”      Cutaway  -  portrait  will  be  performed  by  local  theatre-‐makers  Stephen  Sheehan  and  Sasha  Zahra  alongside  NSW-‐based  Katia  Molino,  a  regular  collaborator  of  Oades.  The  creative  team  also  includes  collaborating  artists  Sasha  Grbich,  Jason  Sweeney,  Wendy  Todd,  Lara  Torr  and  Emma  Webb.    Cutaway  -  a  portrait  is  presented  by  Vitalstatistix  for  five  shows  only  from  13th  to  16th  December.                                      CUTAWAY  -  A  PORTRAIT    Presented  by  Vitalstatistix  at  Waterside,  11  Nile  St,  Port  Adelaide    5  SHOWS  ONLY  8pm  Thursday  December  13  8pm  Friday  December  14  5pm  &  8pm  Saturday  December  15  8pm  Sunday  December  16    Book  at  www.trybooking.com      For  more  info  see  www.vitalstatistix.com.au  or  phone  8447  6211    Artists  available  for  interviews  and  photos  from  26th  November  to  7th  December
