1. PREP: Print out the attached “internet content ”, “tags” and “search categories”. Cut the tags on dotted
lines. Cut out the search categories as well. You’ll also need space on a large table, space on walls (and tape
or pushpins to hang paper on walls), a handful of markers, and 8-10 regular office-supply file folders.
2. FOLDER COLLECTIONS: At a large table, spread out folders, “internet content” printouts, and pens or
markers. As a group, work to organize the internet content into folders. Folders can be labeled using mark-
ers, with any category or label the group chooses. Use as many folders as the group finds necessary.
Organizing content into folders can be done once, or challenge the group to try three times,
using different strategies each time. Briefly discuss the process, noting what worked well and what was
difficult. Were compromises necessary?
3. TAGGING: Now take the “internet content” sheets out of the folders, setting the folders aside. Spread
“internet content” sheets out on the table again, along with the “tags”. As a group, assign tags to internet
content. Make your own tags by writing descriptive words on the blank tags provided. (Offer more blanks
as needed.) Use tape to attach tags to internet content. Use as many tags per internet content sheet as
desired.
Briefly discuss this process. How was it different from using folders to organize the content?
4. SEARCH / TAGGED COLLECTIONS: Now that you have tagged the content, try making some content
collecctions. Make a “food” collection by arranging all sheets tagged with “food” in one pile. Try this with
other tags. Or, simulate an internet search: with tape or pushpins, hang the “search categories” on the wall,
leaving enough space under each to accomodate several “internet content” sheets. Nominate someone to
choose a search term, and as a group, put up all the content that would appear for that search.
5. DISCUSSION: What is the point of tagging content on the internet? How is it different than putting
content into folders? When might one organizational system work better than the other?
