Leading Ocean Carriers and NVOCCs (Feb. 12, 2014) leading ocean carriers and non-vessel operating common carriers (NVOCCs) have selected Descartes Japan Ocean™ Advance Filing Rules (Descartes Japan Ocean™ AFR) to help them comply with Japan's new advanced cargo security initiative, which took effect March 10, 2014. Japan's AFR mandate requires ocean carriers and NVOCCs to electronically submit data to Japan Customs on maritime container cargo intended for a port in Japan no later than 24 hours before departure of the vessel from the port of loading. Descartes Transportation Manager™ IS contributed by Arthur LasschuytDescartes Order Express™ has been integrated into Descartes Transportation Manager IS. Customers have the ability to perform a carrier selection based on lead time and/or cost for express carriers and the respective services. Current connected carriers include FedEx, DHL, TNT and UPS. In addition, functionality for 3rd-party billing – booking on behalf of another party, collect, and receiver pays, has been added for TNT. Development to include additional carriers is ongoing. With the integration of the above and existing modules, customers can now easily select the most economical carrier and service using only one solution designed to handle multiple carriers and modes.

The Event Management module incorporates status information from multiple carriers and multiple modes of transport. The data provides customers with key information about stock in transit, enabling them to improve visibility, support commitments for inbound and outbound shipments and manage carriers. An output file can be created, with several data blocks that can be called, first call (1) will be Track and Trace and Shipment details. The second call (2) will be Package details.

[March 17, 2014 – Journal of Commerce] “FMCSA Releases Electronic Logging Rule: A proposed rule that would require truck and bus drivers to replace paper logbooks with electronic devices is “on the street” and available for review online, though the official comment period hasn't begun yet, according to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administrator Anne S. Ferro.” Read more. [March 12, 2014 - IATA] “Eighth World Cargo Symposium Begins with Call for Cut in Transit Times: Cutting average transit times by up to 48 hours by 2020 would make a huge difference to our value proposition, and enable the industry to arrest modal shift, and drive new efficiencies for the business,” said Des Vertannes, IATA’s Global Head of Cargo in his opening keynote address. This set the tone for a symposium focused on “Transformation through innovation”. Currently the average end-to-end time for consignments is around 6-7 days – a schedule that has not improved since the 1960s.” Read more.

Ariba (March 26, 2014) – “SAP to Acquire Fieldglass, the Global Cloud Technology Leader in Contingent Workforce Management: announced plans to acquire Fieldglass, the leading technology provider for procuring and managing contingent labor and services. The addition of Fieldglass’ cloud-based Vendor Management System (VMS) solution meets the growing demand among employers to manage flexible workforces.” Read more.

Kore Telematics (March 5, 2014) – “KORE Acquires Jazz Wireless Data: announced that it has completed its acquisition of Jazz Wireless Data, an established provider of M2M networking services in North America. Under the terms of the agreement, all existing Jazz customers will gain access to the KORE network and to key KORE services. “Woolworths Advertisement for their Online Orders”. Here is a YouTube advertisement for Woolworths Online. The customers can order their groceries online and then track the delivery. Woolworths’ uses Descartes Route Planner™ and Descartes Mobile™ to manage the process in real time. The calls from their web store are directed through Descartes Route Planner. The customer is provided a 2-hour time window, and has access to the most current ETA.
