    Before

Customer related information dispersed acrossdifferent applications :

Inefficient information retrieval because of partlyredundant and in some cases incomplete orinconsistent customer data:

The potential of a customer could not be fullyutilized, due to lack of consistent and complete

customer view across all lines of business

    After

Single customer view by integrating variouslegacy systems with SAP CRM based on aService Oriented Architecture (SOA).

Single customer view, contact history andsales leadership information improve salesefficiency and increase cross selling potential.

    Improved lead management and direct

marketing efficiency by integrated marketingcampaigns and automatic lead generation.

With SAP NetWeaver PI 7.1 we are able to meet today's integration requirements in aheterogeneous IT landscape and to move forward on our SOA roadmap.

SAP NetWeaver PI 7.1 provides the functionality and scalability needed to integrate ourlegacy world with SAP on an enterprise level.

    Business process optimization

    Benefits

Master data, pricing and conditions are now centralized in SAP ERP and not replicated in both systems(SAP ERP & POS) as previously implemented

Stock information is updated in real time, in both systems (SAP and POS). Previously businessobjects were updated every 3 or 12 hours, depending of which data was transferred and the number oftransactions.

Operation problems because business data were not updated were eliminated. Example: Selling goodsthat were not available in the warehouse, pricing differences, etc.

    Why SAP

SOA enabled to integrate several information providers with a standardized set of servicesfor the POS consumer system

Open platform provides flexibility & speed to deliver new ideas and solutions, reusingexisting functionality

Enterprise Services could be reused in other known processes with similar needs

Support time and effort from operations area (IT) reduced in all interface related activities,

thanks to all .txt file interfaces that were replaced by online enterprise services Delivery of better solutions with less budget, thanks to the reuse of existing services

    provided by SAP systems

Provisioning of well documented services and their interfaces to allow the reuse of theseservices by other processes

We believe that using PI is the best way to integrate our legacy systems with SAP, itprovides several technical options to integrate heterogeneous systems.

    Implementation Highlights

The following processes were improved: Sales Order Processing, Invoice Processing

A new lightweight POS (Point Of Sale) system was implemented and existing architecturewas shifted to a SOA approach. Existing business functionality is accessed in real-time.

Usage of Enterprise Services Repository as central repository for

Governance, central design of SOA artifacts

The following SAP Enterprise Services were used:

    Read customers, products, pricing, etc.

    Update customers, stocks

Execute invoice processing, update financial information

    Centralization of information

POS and logistics integrated via SAP NetWeaver PI 7.1

Usage of SAP NetWeaver PI 7.1 as Enterprise wide Service Bus

SAP NetWeaver PI is defined as the central ESB

For some scenarios only other integration technologies or direct connections are usedcurrently; we plan to replace those in the future with SAP NetWeaver PI

Business-critical issues related to performance with SAP NetWeaver PI 7.1?

    No, the performance is great

If we would have performance issues, then business critical scenarios would not be working, the company would not be able to deliver products to customers in the sales room:

    Stock level check

Cannot finish billing, stock update and accounting posting online delivery stopped

    ROI Analysis

No concrete analysis, but SAP NetWeaver PI 7.1 is very positive with respect to

    Allow immediate product delivery

Better customer and seller access to logistic information

Retail stores spread in remote locations are now delivering online

Improvement in sales system using exposed SAP Retail services online

    Next Steps

Implement further scenarios on SAP NetWeaver PI 7.1, such as

    Integration of Payments with Sales

Further interfaces to integrate SAP with other legacy systems

Integration of non-SAP systems with non-SAP systems Replace other integration technologies with SAP NetWeaver PI

The ES Repository and Services Registry equip us with the tools we need forour SOA governance. The AAE enables us to use the PI also for synchronousscenarios with user interaction due to the much faster message processing.

PI is now much more open and accessible towards development environments.PI developers will love several features like Function Libraries, parameterized

    mapping.
