Plan Before You PlantTrees and power lines don’t mix. When they touch, it can cause everything from power outages, fi res and downed lines to safety hazards for people, wildlife and even the trees themselves. Plant the right tree in the right place for electric service reliability.

Medium-sized trees 25-45 feet in height

Should be planted 15–30 feet from power lines

Arborvitae, fl owering cherry, magnolia, hornbeam and shadblow

Large-growing trees More than 45 feet in height

Should be planted at least 30 feet from power lines

Oak, maple, locust, spruce and pines

Low-growing trees Up to 25 feet in height

May be planted near roadside power lines

Crabapple, dogwood, hawthorn, plum and Japanese maple

Call Before You DigDigging can be dangerous if you don’t check first for underground wiring or cable. Never dig around your home or business without first calling 8-1-1. Connecticut law requires you to call at least two full working days, excluding weekends and holidays, before digging.

Storm TipsSevere weather can cause power outages.CL&P’s goal is to get your power back on as quickly and safely as possible. Remember – it takes at least two things to get through the effects of a severe storm: preparation and patience.

The best time to prepare is before a storm strikes, so you can plan for the possibility of living without everyday tools that need electricity. Here are some tips:

q Prepare a “lights out” kit. Keep a flashlight and battery-powered radio handy. Set aside water, and stock up on batteries and easy-to-prepare food.

q Check medications that require refrigeration.

q Set your refrigerator and freezer to their coldest setting, and make extra ice.

q Be prepared to cook outside.

q Fully charge your cell phone, and consider purchasing a battery- powered backup charger.

q Find out the location of the nearest emergency shelter.

q Unplug sensitive electronic equipment, such as computers.

q Fill your car’s gas tank.

q Get extra cash in case ATMs do not work.
