Life shaped learning

The aim of this mini guide is to give you an insight into how Coventry University Scarborough Campus can offer you a new style of university education, which is flexible, affordable and most of all achievable.

The Scarborough Campus is part of the Coventry University Group. It follows the successful contemporary model of higher education which was launched in September 2012.

From September 2015, we will be delivering some of our courses from some of Scarborough’s most iconic buildings. This will be an exciting opportunity and journey for new students joining us. In September 2016 we will open our new £10M teaching facility as part of the new £40M Scarborough Sports Village, just a 10 minute walk from the railway station.

The range of academic qualifications we offer; Foundation Years, Higher National Certificates, Higher National Diplomas and Degrees, are all awarded by Coventry University. This means that a Scarborough Campus student graduates with a Coventry University degree.

A new way of studyingThe main difference between Coventry University Scarborough Campus and other universities is the way that we teach. At most institutions you will be taught eight modules (subject areas) of your chosen course over two semesters (four subjects per semester). At Coventry University Scarborough Campus, for all courses, we teach four modules per year, one subject area at a time over four intensive six week blocks. There are no traditional end of year examinations to worry about. Instead we use a variety of methods to assess our students such as assignments, phase-tests or presentations, during and at the end of each module.

FlexibilityOur structured timetable from Monday to Friday, either in the mornings from 9am to 1pm or the afternoons from 2pm to 6pm, gives you both the convenience of regular hours and the possibility of fitting other commitments, such as a part-time job or family responsibilities, around your study.

Teaching and SupportOur course tutors are both academics and practising professionals, all of whom can bring their experience to the classroom. With small class sizes and high contact hours, you will get the

Page 4: CUSC Mini Guide

4

time and opportunity to work closely with our tutors who can help you to approach the subject from all angles. Where possible our tutors will use real-life projects and scenarios. In addition to 18 hours of teaching time per week, you will attend a two hour tutorial in a small group of up to five students. This is a chance for you to set your own agenda and discuss or receive clarification in any potential problem areas. If required we can also provide English support lessons each week throughout your time with us.

Our courses

At Coventry University Scarborough Campus we want to make higher education accessible to everyone. So we offer a range of qualifications to allow entry, no matter what your educational background.

Foundation YearsIf you haven’t met the entry requirements for your chosen higher education course or have changed your mind about the subject you wish to study, our Foundation Years can provide you with a pathway to higher education. If you successfully complete a Foundation Year with us, you will be guaranteed a place on a Coventry University Scarborough Campus degree course. Alternatively you could progress on to a degree course at Coventry University, Coventry University College or another institution, subject to meeting their entry requirements.

At our other campus, students have successfully transferred on to other courses including Nursing, Physiotherapy, Sports Therapy, Social

Work, Forensic Science, Criminology and Psychology, Mechanical Engineering and Biomedical Science.

HNC, HND, Degree ProgrammesFor students entering Coventry University Scarborough Campus at degree level, our flexible programme structure will allow you to progress with us stage by stage from a level 4 (Higher National Certificate) in year 1 to a level 5 (Higher National Diploma) in year 2 and finally a level 6 (Honours Degree) in year 3. This gives you the option to choose at which stage you leave the course, without the constraints of signing up for a 3 year degree course and potentially leaving after year 1 or 2 with no recognised qualification.

Preparing you for your future careerWe want every single student that leaves Coventry University Scarborough Campus to have the relevant skills and knowledge that will help them secure employment in their chosen profession. Therefore, as well as ensuring that our courses meet the required academic qualifications criteria, wherever possible we have designed our courses around the standards for professional qualifications and in many cases have embedded these into our programmes. This gives you the opportunity to prepare for and take professional examinations on completion of your course.

1 Employability

We want every single student that leaves Coventry University Scarborough Campus to have the relevant skills and knowledge that will help them secure employment in their chosen profession – so you have the potential to achieve an academic qualification plus a professional qualification.

We also have a dedicated Employability and Placements team to help support you with securing valuable placements throughout your time with us and securing a graduate job once you successfully complete your degree.

2 Flexibility

For our full-time students, we offer a structured teaching week where you will attend morning (9.00-13.00) or afternoon (14.00-18.00) classes, depending on your course, to help you study around your other commitments. This can be an ideal option if you need to fit your studies around a part-time job.

We offer numerous intakes throughout the year so you can start at a time that is convenient to you; September, November, January, February, April and June.

For our part-time students, you have the opportunity to get a degree with our Saturday University or during the evenings – depending on your course. With online study also available, we truly believe we can provide you with a study option that suits you.

3 Quality

Our course teams contain both academics and practising professionals. Their aim is to work together to help you discover your subject from all angles, the theory and the practice. You will be studying towards a Coventry University award so you can be assured that the content is of high quality.

4 High contact hours

At Coventry University Scarborough Campus full-time students get 18 hours of teaching each week in small groups. You will also need to attend a two hour tutorial each week in groups of about five students; this way we can better ensure that you have understood the week’s learning and that you are ready for the next.

5 Affordability

The fees that you pay with us are lower than those at many other comparable institutions. Tuition fees for full-time students for 2015 start from £5,616 per year and cover all of your classes, online tutorials, some of the learning materials and access to the Learning Resource Centre.

We firmly believe that Coventry University Scarborough Campus gives you access to a quality and relevant learning experience at a price that represents excellent value for money. We also believe that you will be able to judge the returns on your investment through your improved career prospects.

The Access course is designed specifically for people who may not have the conventional educational requirements to enter on to a higher education course. The aim of the course is to enable you to acquire the skills, knowledge and confidence to compete on an equal footing with those students starting degree programmes through the conventional entry channels of ‘A’ Levels.

If you successfully pass the Access course, you will be guaranteed a place on a relevant Honours Degree course at Coventry University Scarborough Campus.

Additionally a student loan is available to those aged 24 and over, so there are no upfront costs. See page 20 for further information.

Our Access programmes are yearlong daytime (Monday-Thursday 9.30-14.00) courses that aim to give mature students the opportunity to prepare for an undergraduate Honours Degree. We have two intakes each year, so you can start at a time that is convenient for you; September or January.

Part-time study

We deliver our Foundation Year, HNC, HND and Degree courses over three, six-week blocks per year. You can study on either Saturdays, two evenings per week or week day mornings or afternoons (Monday to Friday 9am-1pm or 2pm-6pm) – depending on the course you want to study. As the courses are spread across the year, you have the chance to fit other things into your life, which is part of being an adult student.

Our courses offer a mixture of face to face and on-line learning and you can finish your degree within three years. Part-time study is fun, challenging and rewarding. These courses offer a great opportunity for mature students to obtain a higher education qualification in an adult environment.

Our courses start at an affordable rate of £1,416.25 per block for 2015/16 entry, and you can study up to four of these per year.

As a part-time student, you may be entitled to a tuition fee loan from Student Finance England to cover the cost of your course. For full information on student loans please read the fees page at the back of this mini guide.

Our professional courses are also designed with part-time adult students in mind – all being delivered on Saturdays. We offer these year round, so we don’t keep you waiting for a course to start.

Online programmesOur 100% online courses in Management and Leadership and Management and Professional Accounting provide you with access to a high-quality Coventry University award.

Study is wholly online to maximize accessibility, and can be structured around your work and personal commitments. All online students benefit from a dedicated Recruitment Advisor, who will guide and advise you through the whole application process.
