EXTERIOR

Curtiss-Wright Hangar, Owens Field Municipal Airport Hangar

Located at the corner of Jim Hamilton Boulevard and Airport Drive, the circa-1929 Curtiss-Wright Hangar stands as a reminder of the

contributions of air transportation to the City of Columbia. One of the last remaining examples of its kind, the historic hangar stands out

among its peer structures throughout the United States due to its largely intact original configuration and composition, despite its level

of deterioration.

The purpose of this condition assessment is to provide a reference point for future conservation and rehabilitation efforts. It is the aim of

this report to catalogue the most pressing repairs that currently compromise both the structural and important aesthetic elements of this

historic property.

Completed in March 2012, this report highlights, through description and imagery, the repairs needed, suggested courses of action and

correlating priority levels of each repair. The conditions that jeopardize the structural integrity along with the repairs required to

restore the hangar to its original, unique design are assigned higher priorities than are repairs that are either secondary in immediacy

or are superficial and do not demand immediate or secondary attention.

It is not the scope of this report to furnish professional or detailed repair instructions toward the conservation or restoration of the

hangar but rather to establish a reference point that future historic preservation professionals may reference when establishing their

respective assessments and suggested work at a later date.

Dominated by sliding steel doors, the front of the hangar, the

literal and figurative “face” of the structure, requires a

significant amount of structural repair, particularly at all

points of contact with its sliding steel door sections. Certain

aesthetic repairs on the southwestern façade should receive

special consideration and priority due to the significant

historical identifying characteristics they provide the hangar.

Closer inspection of the SE façade reveals very

serious and glaring structural concerns that

must be addressed before any subsequent

conservation or restoration plans are

undertaken. Special note should be made of

the significant stress fractures spanning from

the supporting piers to adjacent window bays.

Unless addressed immediately the structural

integrity of the hangar as a whole could be

jeopardized.

Significant structural

damage to southern corner

of hangar due to door

catch design flaw. Large

bay doors were too heavy

upon impact with the

deteriorated bumpers and

created stress fractures

that multiplied and were

amplified by continued

use.
