Day 1 Flight

Overnight fl ight to Great Britain • Relax as you fl y across the Atlantic.

Day 2 London

Arrival in London • Touch down in London, Europe’s largest city! After clearing customs, you are greeted by your EF Tour Director, who will remain with you throughout your stay. Walking tour of London • Stroll through the heart of London on our EF walking tour, which begins along the banks of the River Thames. These shadowy waters gave the city its name, which derives from Llyn-Dyn, Celtic for “city of the lake.” Walk along the Strand and see the spot considered to be London’s geographic center; all measurements of distances to London end here. Enter Trafalgar Square and pause at Nelson’s Column, built to commemorate his 1805 victory in the Battle of Trafalgar. Con-tinue on to Leicester Square, where duelists once fought to the death. Then saunter through

London’s tiny Chinatown. Your walk ends at chic Covent Garden, where you’ll enjoy watch-ing street performers (or “buskers”) amuse the lively crowds. (The exact walking route may vary, depending on your hotel location and the day’s other activities.)

Day 3 London

Guided sightseeing of London • A local guide leads you on a panoramic tour of London. Begin in Grosvenor Square, which is sometimes called “Little America” because it’s the site of the U.S. embassy and the house where Eisenhower once lived. Continue to Hyde Park Corner, located at the southeast corner of Hyde Park, one of London’s largest parks. At bustling Piccadilly Circus, the intersection of five busy streets, check out the bright lights and big-city dis-plays, before heading to Trafalgar Square. Pass Speaker’s Corner, where anyone with some-thing to say is invited to speak his or her mind. Snap a photo of the Houses of Parliament and

Guided sightseeing of Stratford • “It is some-thing, I thought, to have seen the dust of Shake-speare.” Discover what inspired Washington Irving’s famous words as you tour Stratford-upon-Avon, where Shakespeare was born, raised and buried. Step back into the Elizabethan age as you visit the half-timbered home in which the Bard was born, as well as peruse the gardens of the Anne Hathaway Cottage, a picturesque thatched farmhouse where Shakespeare’s wife spent her childhood.Evening theater performance • Th is evening, enjoy another live theater performance.

Day 7 Bath • London

Transfer via Bath • Travel through Jane Aus-ten’s legendary and much-loved Bath on your way to London. Literary tour of Bath • Enjoy a literary tour of Bath, famous for its Georgian architecture, and a lasting reminder of the world described in so many Jane Austen novels. In her novel Northanger Abbey, Austen wrote, “I really be-lieve I shall always be talking of Bath... I do like it so very much. Oh! who can ever be tired of Bath.” Bath was also a favorite vacation spot of early Romans and 18th-century English ar-istocracy alike; former residents include Queen Victoria and Lord Nelson.

Learn what it takes to put on a successful the-atrical performance when you take a backstage tour of the National Th eatre. Your guide will show you three auditoriums, scenic workshops and backstage areas. Watch crew members de-sign, paint and build their sets. If you’re lucky, you may even see some of the cast practicing for their next performance.Evening theater • Celebrate London’s vibrant drama scene as you attend an evening theater performance in the West End.

Day 5 Oxford • Stratford

Transfer via Oxford • Travel through the Chiltern Hills to ivy-draped Oxford. A mecca of learning for more than 800 years, Oxford is the oldest university in the English-speaking world (alumni include 14 prime ministers, and former President Bill Clinton spent a term here as well). On your visit to Oxford, explore Christ Church College, one of the largest colleges at the university. Christ Church has a lengthy his-tory in literature, serving as the setting for parts of Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited, as well as Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Won-derland. Guided Shakespeare walk • Take a Shake-speare walk with a Hult University professor.Guided tour of the Globe Theatre • Built just 200 yards from its original site, London’s new Globe Theatre transports visitors to Elizabe-than England. Th ose were the days when rowdy groundlings hurled rotten food at the actors to express their displeasure with a performance, and villains like Othello’s Iago were mercilessly heckled by the enthusiastic crowd. You might recognize this theater from the fi lm Shakespeare in Love—crew members constructed an exact replica of the Globe to preserve the historical accuracy of the time period. Day 9 Home

Return home • Your tour director assists with the transfer to the airport, where you’ll check in for your return flight home.

Day 9 London

Extension to London • Alternatively, your group can plan to extend its stay. Excursion to Canterbury and Dover • Your tour director will show you historic Canter-bury, including the town’s magnifi cent Gothic church, Canterbury Cathedral. Th e headquar-ters of the Church of England is the burial place of King Henry IV and Edward the Black Prince. It’s also famous as the site where four of King Henry II’s knights murdered Archbishop Th omas Becket in 1170 for his refusal to obey the king. Pilgrims eventually fl ocked to Canter-bury to visit Becket’s shrine, inspiring Chaucer to write Th e Canterbury Tales in 1387.

Dover Castle and Secret Wartime Tunnels

• Set high atop the famous white cliffs, Dover Castle offers a glimpse into centuries of history as you explore medieval tunnels and extensive battlements. Each layer of this imposing castle, surrounded by the sea, reveals fascinating his-tory.
