{ t r a n s p o r t }At first it the sheer size of Berlin can be quitedaunting, but the variety of both public andprivate transport options help shrink the dis -tances and will take you to pretty much any -where you want

AirportsTwo airports currently serve Berlin:Tegel (to close in mid-2012) andSchnefeld. Served by numerousbuses, it is easy to get from Tegelto any of the main train sta ons. Those travelling to Schnefeld havefewer complica ons, as its servedby both the bus and S-Bahn.

TramThe eastern side of the city isserved by an extensive network of trams. They stop frequently, butgenerally travel on a dedicated sec-

on of the road, meaning they are

quite quick. Most tram services run24 hours a day.

BusesThe bus network operates through-out the day and night, and alsoserves as a handy late-night re-placement for trains Monday toThursday nights. In addi on to themetro buses are the express buses, denoted by an X, which have fewerstops. Services run frequently duringthe day and from 12:30 am to 4:30am Monday to Friday they serve as areplacement for the U-Bahn.

U-BahnThe U-Bahn is the city s metro trainservice. Stops are frequent andconveniently located, meaning youllgenerally arrive close to your des -na on. Monday to Thursday trainsrun from 4:30 am to 12:30 am andall night on Fridays, Saturdays andSunday.

S-BahnThe S-Bahn is an urban rail ser-vice and extends further than theU-Bahn, but stops less frequently.Given its reach, it is very useful fordaytrips to places such as Potsdam orWannsee. Trains run from 4:30 a.m.to 12:30 a.m. Monday to Thursday, with addi onal services on Friday,Saturday and Sunday nights.

Public transportThe Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG)operates the citys S-Bahn, U-Bahn,tram and bus networks, which allinterconnect very e ciently, makingtravel simple. BVGs website (www.bvg.de) provides a journey planner, which helps you nd the fastestroute and is regularly updated withservice altera ons.To make life easier, be sure to grabmaps for both the S-/U-Bahn net-work and the tram services. Conven -iently, both the S-/U-Bahn networkand the tram lines are colour-coded,in addi on to being numbered.
