CURRIER MUSEUM OF ART • NEW HAMPSHIRE TOOLKIT 33

Welcome,

For Freedoms is a collective for creative citizenship. We use art to deepen public discussions on civic issues and core values, and to advocate for equality, dialogue, and civic participation. We believe that art and artists have the power to reshape society and challenge the prohibitive and divisive systems that define existing notions of citizenship and politics.

We invite you to join For Freedoms as we take up residency at the Currier Museum of Art. Starting in October 2019, we will run a campaign comprised of concurrent, decentralized programs with various organizations across New Hampshire.

Our goal is to encourage broad creative civic engagement in Manchester and communities throughout the state.

This toolkit serves as a how-to for two different For Freedoms activations: Town Halls and Lawn Signs. These programs are designed to attract diverse voices and lend agency to community members to express and explore what freedom means to them today.

We believe in the collective power of artists. We are committed to the idea that democracy thrives on free dialogue.

JOIN US. FOR FREEDOMS. FOR US ALL.

FOR FREEDOMS

Town Halls

WHAT IS A FOR FREEDOMS TOWN HALL?

Our Town Halls are forums for inclusive public conversations that• are artist-led• can be inspired by one of the Four Freedoms (fear, speech, want or worship)• welcome many kinds of voices and points of view• provoke active, critical listening

FORMAT

For Freedoms Town Halls are meant to be an artful act—the goal is civic engagement and dynamic conversation. There is no required format, topic, or rules for the discussion. It could be a walking tour of a city, an artist critique, or a debate. What happens when we begin to think of dialogue and discourse as an artistic medium unto itself ?

WHO PARTICIPATES

This is an opportunity to highlight the expertise among artists, designers, policy makers, community organizers and citizens in your city or town. If helpful, we can recommend local artists or institutions in our network.

PAST EXAMPLES

• A conversation in a museum about immigration populated only by self-identified immigrants• A round-table talk about food insecurity amongst chefs, artists and urban agriculturalists• Artists and lawyers discussing the First Amendment• A rifle-range visit led by an artist and discussion of gun culture among doctors, gun enthusiasts and historians

DOCUMENTATION

Take photos of your town hall and/or record the discussion, if possible. Our recommendations for the best images include: photograph in 20mb or larger highest resolution RAW format; try to use the ratio of 6x9 for horizontals, 4x5 for verticals, and 16x9 for super wide.

If you have questions or want advice on how to make your Town Hall more impactful, please reach out to [email protected] and/or [email protected]

FOR FREEDOMS

Lawn Signs

WHAT IS A FOR FREEDOMS LAWN SIGN EVENT?

The Four Freedoms outlined by FDR and Norman Rockwell began to articulate the human right to freedom, but the articulation of those freedoms did not apply to everyone. The lawn signs allow every participant to define freedom in their own way and articulate a vision of freedom that contains multitudes. The signs read:

• Freedom Of ____• Freedom From _____• Freedom For ______• Freedom To______

HOW TO DO IT

• Download the sign designs (click here) • Our Lawn Signs can be whatever size or material that suits your budget/location.

Institutions have printed them as postcards, posters, vinyl wallpapers, buttons, or as yard signs made to stick in the grass with posts

• Contact your local printer for a quote on price and timing to produce your versions of the Lawn Signs. Order signs, sharpie markers, and mounting hardware

• Hold a public event and invite people who attend to fill out the signs. Participants from any age group can be invited to take part. Encourage attendees to discuss their own visions of freedom with one another

• If possible, find a location to display the community’s work

DOCUMENTATION

Take photos of the Lawn Sign activation that capture the action of people filling them out and installing them in the location. Our recommendations for the best images include: photograph in 20mb or larger highest resolution RAW format; try to use the ratio of 6x9 for horizontals, 4x5 for verticals, and 16x9 for super wide.
